Me-Made-May ’14: Week 5 Round-Up

30 May

Ahhhh, you guys! Me Made May (and thus, the daily photographs) is almost over! Can I get a FUCK YEAH!?

This is going to be a longer than usual round-up, because I went on vacation and obviously I had to change outfits a couple times each day. That’s what you do on vacation, right? ps, sorry in advance.

5/24
5/24, Saturday
Dress: Lady Skater
Shoes: Keds

First day of our vacation! Here we are en route to Santa Rosa Beach, at a food truck somewhere in Alabama. I knew we’d spend the day in the car, so I opted for a comfy knit dress. I’ve always thought this dress was very fall-like, due to the colors, but the fabric is definitely summer-appropriate as well πŸ™‚

5/25 pt. 1
5/25, Sunday I
Pajamas: Lakeside pajamas

I’ve been wearing various other me-mades throughout the month that haven’t made it into photos (workout wear, pajamas, leggings, underwear, etc), so here’s some proof! I brought two pairs of Lakeside pajamas to wear while on vacation – the ones you see here, plus a new set I made a couple days before (I used this cute strawberry print cotton lawn to make them, if you were wondering!)- and wore them all week. In addition to being awesome pajamas, they also make a great swimsuit cover-up! Although, to be fair, I started out wearing the set and ended up in only the shorts(+ bikini top, obvs) by the end of the week.

Speaking of bathing suits…

5/25, pt. 2
5/25, Sunday II
Swimsuit: Papercut Patterns Soma Swimsuit (no blog post on this… yet! But here’s the link to the pattern :))
Sunglasses: Franco Sarto
Hat: Scarlet Begonia

Hell yes I came with a handmade swimsuit! THREE, in fact! This is the first – the result of my pattern testing for Papercut Patterns a couple of months ago πŸ™‚ I haven’t had a chance to write up a proper blog post, but here’s a sneak preview πŸ™‚

5/25, pt. 3 (sorry! Last one for today)
5/25, Sunday III
Top: Refashioned from a men’s Hawaiian shirt
Shorts: Rite of Spring shorts
Shoes: Keds

After spending all afternoon at the beach (no, really, I laid up on a float and bobbed around in the ocean for hours and it was glorious), I reluctantly put on clothes and walked around the shops with Landon. I didn’t buy stuff, but I did buy liquor. Priorities, y’all.

Also, that shirt. This is the third vacation I’ve dragged it to (and no shit, I literally wore that same outfit last May HAHAAHAHA whatever, it’s good, I’m not apologizing for shit), so it’s basically my official vacation shirt at this point. Unfortunately, it’s also way too big now. My alterations were pretty shoddy (it was a very last-minute job), and I’m thinking I may just need to send it to the nice Goodwill Bin in the sky at this point.

5/26, pt. 1- my other @papercutpatterns Soma bikini + a photo bombing niece #mmm14 #mmmay14
5/26, Monday I
Swimsuit: Papercut Patterns Soma Swimsuit
Sunglasses: Franco Sarto
Hat: Scarlet Begonia

Exact same get-up as the day before, but check out how different it turned out! This is version 2 of the Soma Swimsuit, and the second one I tested (yeah, I tested both. I wasn’t asked to, but after making the first one I kind of went crazy. I almost made 3, tbh). I used this version to play with stripes and decorative elastic, and I LOVE how it turned out. Seriously, my favorite swimsuit ever! Again, expect a blog post on these bad boys soon πŸ™‚

Oh yeah, and that bratty kid in the background is my niece πŸ™‚ I told her she could photobomb my picture and she sure did me proud.

5/26, pt. 2- dress: Sewaholic Lonsdale; shoes: Fergalicious. #mmm14 #mmmay14
5/26, Monday II
Dress: Sewaholic Lonsdale
Shoes: Fergalicious

I wore this for a dinner out with my parents+Landon’s parents (the first time they met! It went very well :)), and unfortunately forgot to take a photo until right before bed. Oh well! Also, I love this dress and I should totally make it again.

5/27, pt. 1- swimsuit: closet case files bombshell #mmm14 #mmmay14
5/27, Tuesday I
Swimsuit: Closet Case Files Bombshell
Sunglasses: Franco Sarto
Hat: Scarlet Begonia

Last bathing suit! This is one I made last year, and I still love it πŸ™‚ Especially good for those days when I realized I’ve just been drinking beer and eating key lime pie all weekend and oh god it’s time for the beach. Hahahaha!!

5/27 forgot to upload this yesterday! Drinking wine in Seaside, FL :) top: thrifted; skirt: Tilly's Miette (tie-less); shoes: Fergalicious #mmm14 #mmmay14
5/27, Tuesday II
Shirt: Thrifted
Skirt: Tilly’s Miette
Shoes: Fergalicious

Post beach, Landon and I spent the afternoon in Seaside, checking out the cute houses, the shops, and drinking free wine (the best part!). Again, with the top – that’s another unofficial vacation top (that I bought… 3 years ago, at the Goodwill on Santa Rosa Beach, ha!) that’s about to get the Goodwill shaft. It’s just too big 😦

5/28 channeling my inner mermaid before heading back to Tennessee β˜€οΈ top: Megan Nielsen cropped briar; skirt: Megan Nielsen cascade. #mmm14 #mmmay14
5/28, Wednesday
Top: Cropped Briar
Skirt: Cascade

Last day on the beach! I thought it would be fun to take the photos of my Cascade by the cascading waves (you can’t even tell in this picture but they were AMAZING that day!). The wind was blowing like crazy, and I think it makes for a really cool picture πŸ™‚ This picture also vaguely reminds me of <a href="this picture from the Little Prince, which makes me happy πŸ™‚

5/29 dress: deer & doe Belladone; shoes: Sam Edelman; necklace: Fabu #mmm14 #mmmay14
5/29, Thursday
Dress: Belladone
Shoes: Sam Edelman
Necklace: Fabu

Back to Nashville! It was at this point that I realized we were almost at the end of May – and I haven’t worn some of my favorite stuff! So out comes the Belladone πŸ™‚ I tried to style this a little differently than usual – I generally wear it with brown or yellow, but I do like the red πŸ™‚

5/30
5/30, Friday (today!)
Dress: Simplicity 1803
Belt: Thrifted
Necklace: Chatterblossom
Shoes: Born

My other favorite dress – and our star pattern for the OAL. I love this pattern and I’m glad I finally have a reason to buckle down and make another! Which reminds me – the sewalong starts on Monday! Eep! πŸ™‚

Speaking of which – those of you who are participating, do you feel like you need a post that covers fabric selection? I was planning on skipping straight ahead to cutting and marking, since I figured most everyone’s already chosen their fabric (and thus makes a post on fabric selection a moot point) – not to mention a lot of y’all are sewing different patterns (which means different fabric requirements) – but you tell me!

Sooo I guess that’s almost it for Me Made May! We do have one more day of the month (and you bet I’ll be wearing me-mades and begrudgingly taking a photo, ha), but I’m not going to include it in this round-up because it doesn’t fit with my ~schedule~. Sorry! If you want to view the rest of the weeks, here they are:
Me-Made May: Week 1
Me-Made-May: Week 2
Me-Made-May: Week 3
Me-Made-May: Week 4
I also have a Flickr Album of all my MMM photos, if that’s more your jam.
If you’re sick of looking at me, that’s ok too – I’m sick of looking at myself at this point :B

I am glad I participated this year, because I definitely learned a lot about what’s lurking in my closet – namely, that there is WAY more than I think there is! Seriously, so many pieces didn’t even make it out this month, and that’s kind of sad considering I only repeated one skirt and a couple of tshirts. I’ve had some size fluctuations over the past couple of years, which means a lot of my summer wear doesn’t fit anymore (and while I altered some of it – such as the Simplicity dress I’m wearing today – a whole bunch of it got sold/donated instead). After that giant purge, I was under the impression that I didn’t have a lot left to wear in warm weather – which is clearly not the case! With that being said, despite my overabundance of clothing, there are still tons of pieces that my wardrobe is lacking. I’ve got plans to make more separates, including shorts (gah, I can’t believe I didn’t wear shorts once this month, wtf?) and tshirts, as well as workout wear, loungewear, and more bathing suits! Serious question… how many bathing suits is too many? They are REALLY fun to make, ok.

How did your Me-Made-May turn out (if you participated)? Did you learn anything life-changing about your closet? Are you SO sick of taking photos? πŸ™‚

Ohh, I almost forgot – I promised y’all outtakes! Let’s revel in the unflattery together:

MMM'14- Outtakes
Most of my photos end up looking like this haha. I dunno why, but I always close my eyes when the picture is being taken (not to mention… whatever my mouth is doing. I guess I was in the middle of talking haha. OK FINE I BASICALLY NEVER SHUT UP)

MMM'14- Outtakes
If anyone happens to see where I left my arm, I’d appreciate your help.

MMM'14- Outtakes
Original photobomb did it better

MMM'14- Outtakes
Look at the fear in Amelia’s eyes hahahahahaha

MMM'14- Outtakes
I just think this is cute. Amelia doesn’t care much for being held (despite my consistent grabby hands at her), but she loooves having her butt scratched.

MMM'14- Outtakes
Hey, that’s almost a good picture! Until you zoom in a bit…

MMM'14- Outtakes
That, my friends, is the face of a cat who’s completely given up on life.

MMM'14- Outtakes
Ok, this is my favorite outtake and the one that made me laugh the hardest. This is a really unflattering picture of both of us – I’m pulling some kind of weird face (again, seriously, probably in the middle of talking) and Amelia just looks PISSED.

MMM'14- Outtakes
If that doesn’t look like the devil incarnate, I don’t know what does.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Me-Made-May ’14: Week 2 Round-Up

9 May

Happy Friday, everyone! One week down into Me-Made-May – and time for another round-up!

5/3
5/3, Saturday
Dress: Fabulous Silk Birds
Slip: Ruby Slip
Shoes: Jessica Simpson

My baby brother graduated college on Saturday! Here I am with all my siblings – of course, I’m the shortest one (and this photo is a little misleading because I’m standing on an incline. I’m actually a good 7″ shorter than my sister, who in turn is shorter than my brothers, ha). I used the graduation as an excuse to pull out my favorite Me-Made to date – the Fabulous Silk Birds dress (I don’t name all my handmades, but I named this one! Because it’s fabulous!). I love love love this dress – I always feel so, well, fabulous in it πŸ™‚ Plus, wearing this dress means I get to wear my equally amazing 4ply silk slip (note to self: sell organs and buy more 4ply silk asap), which is always a plus in my book πŸ™‚

5/4
5/4, Sunday
Dress: Seersucker Anna
Shoes: Born
Belt: Thrifted
Sunglasses: Franco Sarto
Purse: Scarlett Begonia

Wore this to go plant shopping and ice cream eatin’ with Landon. I realize that I have this dress styled the exact same way I did in the original FO post – I guess I’m not very creative when it comes to pink seersucker! Anyway, love it and it’s great for hot weather. Also, if my hair looks brighter than it did the day before – that’s cos we redyed it πŸ™‚ I slept in the dye so it’s SUPER bright now haha.

5/5
5/5, Monday
Tank: Target
Skirt: Cascade
Shoes: Jessica Simpson
Necklace: Handmade by me

Another favorite me-made! I LOVE this skirt, and everyone else seems to love it too – I’ve literally been followed around retail stores over it, multiple times. It’s the perfect marriage of pattern and fabric (and, before you ask – the fabric came aaaaall the way from Macedonia. My BFF picked it up for me while she was living there a few years ago. Wish I had more of it!), and it’s just so fun to wear. I feel like Shakira, and I mean that in the best way.

5/6
5/6, Tuesday
Dress: Emery
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Born

Can’t ever be sad when your hair matches your dress πŸ™‚

5/7
5/7, Wednesday
Dress: Lady Skater
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: xoxo

ESPECIALLY if that dress has tigers printed on it!

5/8
5/8, Thursday
Top: Briar
Skirt: Moss Mini
Necklace: Thrifted
Shoes: Keds

I took some advice on styling this skirt and went with a tshirt that has a looser fit – and I LOVE how it looks with this skirt! Especially the hemline on this Briar – hi-lo hem gives it the look as if it’s tucked in, without it actually being, you know, tucked. The whole outfit is totally comfy and I’m not gonna lie – I felt pretty good about it all day.

5/9
5/9, Friday (that’s today!)
Top: Advance 8511
Pants: Thurlows (but skinny!)
Shoes: Born

I actually had a different outfit planned today – I wanted to wear a skirt. But then I stepped outside, noticed the chill in the air, and decided to wear my red Thurlows instead. No regrets!

All in all, I think I had a pretty successful first (full)week of MMM! The changing weather has been a little tricky, but I’m working on a lightweight trench coat right now that will hopefully get me through the chilly mornings and occasional rain (actually, the trench is done – I’m just waiting on the buttons to be delivered!). How are y’all doing with your pledges? Find any fun outfit combinations or gaping holes in your closet yet?

Oh, just a few more announcements before I sign off for the weekend:
– If you haven’t already done so, don’t forget to enter in the Colette Guide to Sewing Knits Giveaway! I’ll be drawing the lucky winner on Monday morning, so you’ve still got time!
– My girl Elizabeth is looking for part time seamstresses to help her with some sewing work. If you’re in the Nashville area and would like to sew on an amazingly fun industrial machine in a gorgeous studio (I’m not even kidding about either of those – that’s me in her studio on 5/6!) for a lil’ extra cash, send her an email at hello@elizabethsuzann.com. I’m currently doing part time work for her on the side, and it’s super awesome because we listen to 80s music and watch Nicolas Cage movies. I have no intentions of quitting; her business is just growing very fast and she needs more help! All levels of experience are welcome – we’re not handbeading couture or anything here πŸ™‚ – but you must already have a basic understanding of clothing construction and know how to operate a sewing machine. Bonus points if you’re a speedy sewer!
– My class at Watkins, Introduction to Fashion Sewing still has a couple of spots open, if you’ve been on the fence about signing up. DO IT NOW, GO!
– Aaaaaand, Nashville’s newest/cutest fabric store, The Fabric Studio, is finally open and just released the class schedule for June! I’ve got a few gigs there as well – Learn to Sew the Colette Ginger Skirt, All About Zippers Sewing Lab, and Apparel Patterns Demystified (seminar/info session)! I’m really excited about all these classes – excited to share my knowledge, excited to teach, excited to meet other sewers in the area! I think it’s gonna be fun! πŸ™‚ Also, I promise to stop spamming y’all about my classes now πŸ™‚

Have a great weekend!

Me Made May ’13 – Week 5 Round-Up

31 May

OMGAH I am so happy to finally be done with Me-Made-May! I loved participating, but MAN taking pictures of myself every day got real rough, real fast. Let’s round up the past week, yeah? Also, fair warning: I just had 4 cups of coffee and I’m real jittery and I kind of hate myself right now.

5/25
5/25, Saturday
Shirt: Megan Nielsen Briar top
Shorts: Sewaholic Thurlows
Necklace: Fire Finch
Shoes: Keds
After a 7.5 hour drive, we made it into Florida! Yeah! This is the balcony of our condo; we were waiting for my parents to figure out the lock situation so we could get inside. Landon took this picture, btw- he took all the pictures while we were in Florida.

5/27
5/26, Sunday Part 1
Sunglasses: Pangea
Bathing suit: Can’t tell you just yet! It’s a pattern I tested that will be available soon, though πŸ˜‰ (and yes, I got permission to post this from the patternmaker! I won’t say what it is, but if she wants to announce herself in the comments…)CAT’S OUTTA THE BAG!! Check out this post if you want to see a sneaky peek of the swimsuit (and reveal who is the mastermind behind this gorgeous pattern!). I’ll have a review post up after the pattern launches, fo sho.

This is the first bathing suit I’ve ever made! This is also the first time in a LONG time – like, years and years long time – that I’ve gone out in public wearing a handmade something and worried that it would fall apart at some point. I’ve been wearing my me-mades for so long, I don’t even give them a second thought… I trust that the construction is well-done, and that I won’t have any wardrobe malfunctions. But a bathing suit – that’s a whole different ballpark! I was almost afraid to go in the ocean, oh god what if I didn’t sew something right!?!
Spoiler: It held up fine πŸ™‚ For both swimming AND sunbathing. Win!

5/26 part II
5/26, Sunday Part 2
Dress: Sewaholic Lonsdale
Shoes: Born
I LOVE this dress and I’ve been dying to wear it since I first made it! Since I wanted MMM to not involve any outfit repeats, I hoarded it until my vacation. Worth it, although I’m excited to be able to wear it, like, once a week now πŸ™‚

5/27
5/27, Monday ~Memorial Day~
Top: Thrifted, recostructed by me
Shorts: Papercut Patterns Rite of Spring shorts
Necklace: Flea market
Shoes: Born
Spent the day wandering around Seaside (no bikes this year – I ran a couple miles that morning and I was TIRED because I am a BABY), and then drinking on the beach in the afternoon πŸ˜‰
Sorry this picture is so dark – I had to lighten it considerably to get anything to show up! Totally felt like a babe in that outfit, btw.

5/28
5/28, Tuesday
Shirt: Megan Nielsen Briar top
Shorts: Sewaholic Thurlows
Necklace: Fire Finch
Sunglasses: Pangea
Flip-Flips: The Children’s Place (yep, I have small feet haha)
Last day on the beach 😦 I miss the ocean already 😦

5/29
5/29, Wednesday
Top: Colette Patterns Sorbetto
Shorts: Sewaholic Thurlows
Shoes: Born
Belt: Thrifted
Sorry for the shitty picture! We got home Tuesday evening, and Landon left for a business trip early early Wednesday morning (ew). I did take a couple of days off to get some work done around the house – and to take a SEWING VACATION fuck yea – so this is as good a picture as you’re gonna get.

5-30
5/30, Thursday
Top: Megan Nielsen Cropped Briar
Skirt: Megan Nielsen Cascade Skirt
Shoes: Franco Sarto
Necklace: Fire Finch
… and here’s the result of my sewing vacation! A whole new outfit, hahaha!!! I’ll write a proper blog post about this next week, but here’s a sneaky peeky for now πŸ˜‰ What you should know is that this fucking skirt makes me feel like Shakira, and I mean that in the best way possible.

5-31
5/31, Friday
Top: Papercut Patterns La Sylphide
Skirt: Megan Nielsen Kelly skirt
Shoes: Sam Edelman
Just kidding, I made another shirt on Thursday. Ha! Expect a blog post on this next week too πŸ™‚ There *is* a peplum on this, it’s just tucked into the skirt. Also, I realize that I’m teetering dangerously into Canadian Tuxedo territory, with the denim skirt and a chambray shirt, but idgaf. You’re just lucky I didn’t put on my denim jacket too.

And that wraps up Me Made May ’13! For the rest of the weekly recaps, check here:
Me Made May 13 Week 1
Me Made May 13 Week 2
Me Made May 13 Week 3
Me Made May 13 Week 4

I had a lot of fun participating this year, but as I mentioned before – taking pictures is a PITA. Glad that part is over! I also got a little burnt out on trying to figure new outfits… since I’ve lost weight this past year, I dropped a couple sizes and most of what I made last year is too big now. I figured a lot of this out as I was getting dressed in the morning which led to some frantic scrambling around (I’ve developed this weird aversion to wearing stuff that doesn’t fit perfectly. I can’t do it! I’ll sit and fuss with it all day and be uncomfortable), and occasionally wearing stuff that just made me feel blech. I really need to purge out my closet.

I also really missed wearing some of my clothes – my vintage dresses sat unloved all month, and my very favorite outfits only got worn once due to the no-repeats. I’m glad I branched out, but man, I really just want to wear the same thing every day for a week now!! Haha!!

Also, speaking of branching out… I need to explore other shorts patterns. I love love love my Thurlows (clearly), but maybe I should give some other shorts a try, yeah?

To everyone who participated in Me Made May – YAY WE DID IT!! Aren’t you so glad to be off picture patrol now? πŸ˜‰

Now I leave you with one last picture of Florida… the view from our balcony.
Practically paradise
This is supposed to make you jealous. Did it work?

Me Made May ’13 – Week 4 Round-Up

24 May

Gah, why do there have to be 5 weeks in May? I am SO TIRED of taking daily pictures, and I think it really shows this week. Sorry in advance!

5/18
5/18, Saturday
Tshirt: Megan Nielsen Briar top
Shorts: Sewaholic Thurlow
Shoes: Keds
Necklace: Made by meeee
Sunglasses: Pangea
Ok, so that morning I was supposed to bike the Tour de Nash, but my friend and I decided we were too tired so we ended up eating a bunch of food, shopping, and riding around Centennial Park – a MUCH better way to spend the day, I’d say! I am standing in front of the Parthenon – yep, Nashville has a full-scale replica of that thing right in the middle of the park. It even has a statue of Athena inside, lol. I LOVE THE PARTHENON.

5/19
5/19, Sunday
Tshirt: Sewaholic Renfrew
Shorts: Sewaholic Thurlows
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Born
This picture was taken in Opryland Hotel (yes, I am INSIDE, not outside! Shitload of plants in there, haha). Opryland hotel is so weird.

5/19
5/20, Monday
Top: Pavlova Wrap top
Skirt: Thrifted, reconstructed by me
Shoes: Born
Belt: Thrifted
At my Monday evening knitting night! Also, the past few pictures have been rill terrible bc I had a friend visiting from out of town, and I didn’t want to be THAT PERSON who spends 20 minutes every morning taking pictures of herself, y’know? We had better things to do, like ride bikes and drink shitty beer.

5-21, BIRTHDAYYY
5/21, Tuesday
Dress: Vogue 1227
Cardigan: Thrifted
Necklace: Antique
Belt: Flea Market
Shoes: Franco Sarto
MAH BIRTHDAY. I wore my birthday dress because, yes.

5/22
5/22, Wednesday
Dress: the Gazer (a Hazel/Ginger mashup)
Cardigan: Thrifted
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Urban Outfitters
I love this dress, although the fit could be better. For some reason, I cut the gingham on the bias but did not give the underlining the same treatment, so the skirt does kind of weird things. Oh well!

5-23
5/23, Thursday
Dress: Colette Chantilly
Sweater: Chuck by Andi Satterlund
Belt: Banana Republic
Shoes: Thrifted
A wool sweater in May!?! Wtf!!

5-24
5/24, Friday
Dress: Advance 8295
Cardigan: Miette by Andi Satterlund
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Born
It’s still a little cold for this dress (the high today is 70*F and YES THAT IS COLD TO ME), but whatever. It’s Friday! Wheeee!!

I haven’t had any new revelations since last week, except that I have pulled a few more dresses from my closet that don’t fit. I think I will end up trying to unload them via Etsy, just not right now as I don’t have the time!! Soon, though. May is almost over πŸ˜‰

Hope y’all have a great weekend!! I am gearing up to go on vacation starting at the buttcrack of dawn tomorrow morning… we are driving to Florida for a few days on Santa Rosa Beach, yay! On that same note, the whole “not repeating outfits” this month means I’ve been hoarding some of my favorite Me-Mades to wear while I’m on vacation (I’m looking at you, Lonsdale dress). Either way, CAN’T FUCKING WAIT. Ha!

This blog will be quiet for the next week, but I’ll be back on Friday with my final MMM’13 round-up. In the meantime, you can find me on Instagram or Twitter if you’re feeling withdrawals (we can get through this together, y’all).

BYEEEEE β™₯

Me Made May ’13 – Week 3 Round-Up

17 May

Well, we’ve made it through another week of Me-Made-May! If we’re being honest here… I’m kind of struggling a little :\ The weather has been SO awkward and unpredictable – a little chilly one day, then hot the next – making it difficult to figure out how to dress, especially since I don’t want to repeat outfits. But I powered through! I did, I did!

5/11
5/11, Saturday
Top: McCall’s 4488
Skirt: Thirfted, reconstructed by me
Jacket: Gap, reconstructed/resized by me
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Born
It was so chilly this day! Boo!

5/12
5/12, Sunday
Dress: Colette Rooibos
Cardigan: Thrifted
Belt: Me-Made
Shoes: Born
Mother’s Day! We met with my parents and niece for breakfast, and then my mom and I took a quick shopping trip (to Children’s Corner lolol because my niece needed some stuff), where I took this picture. I love this dress, so so so much, but it’s a little big now 😦

5-13
5/13, Monday
Dress: Colette Ceylon
Shoes: Nine West
Another dress that’s now too big. It looks fine in the picture, but I was SO uncomfortable all day. Sadly, I don’t think this can be taken in anymore.

5-14
5/14, Tuesday
Blouse: Simplicity 4676
Skirt: Self-drafted circle skirt
Belt: Banana Republic
Shoes: Franco Sarto
I love this outfit! That polka dot blouse really does go with everything πŸ™‚ Oh, and I feel like I need to mention these shoes – I’ve been lusting after them for over a year, but they were about $75 at Nordstorm and I couldn’t afford them (as I spent most of last year paying off debts – which I’m now debt-free, woohoo go me). Then they were gone forever and I was sad. BUT, I found them on Sunday at Rugged Wearhose (which is like Marshall’s or TJ Maxxx, except for a ~younger crowd~) for $30. In my size! Best find ever!!

5-15
Dress: Vogue 1086
5/15, Wednesday
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Franco Sarto
I really was not feeling this dress when I put it on… it’s too flowy/loose for my tastes, and the colors aren’t really me. But I got SO many compliments on it all day! Plus it is really nice and cool for hot weather. So this one stays πŸ™‚

5-16
5/16, Thursday
Dress: Colette Parfait
Shoes: Thrifted
Another dress I’m not really feeling these days. The back is loose now and the straps keep falling down, no matter how much I shorten them.

5/17
5/17, Friday
Top: Megan Nielsen Briar (unblogged… I just finished this the other night. Need to take some pictures!)
Skirt: Megan Nielsen Kelly
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Keds
Bag: Po Campo
Today is Bike to Work Day! I celebrated by… biking to work! Haha! Honestly, it was a little difficult this morning… my meet-up group did not meet up (and SHAME on the leader for not notifying anyone… I waited at the park for 20 minutes 😦 I was so excited to meet other cyclist commuters in my neighborhood, too!), so I biked it solo. Which was fine – I’ve biked to work before, although not at the new location since my office moved downtown. Also, it’s very rainy today. Mostly drizzle – and my bag is waterproof, fuck yea – but I guess it turned a lot of people off, as the turnout was very small. Oh well, I got free coffee and a scone so I’m happy πŸ™‚ Plus – BIKING. YAY.

So… what did I learn this week? Well, I’m just NOT feeling most of last year’s stuff. A lot of it doesn’t fit right anymore – too big to feel comfortable (on me) and I don’t even know if I want to bother with trying to alter it down. Thinking about sticking some of this stuff on Etsy or eBay and just trying to unload – specifically the floral mini dress, the embroidered silk shell top (REALLY mad about that one!!), the nautical-inspired linen dress, the red gingham dress, the white eyelet maxi dress and that Ceylon. Would anyone be interested in this stuff? It would be sized for a 36″ bust.

A couple things I wanted to mention –
– I edited this into yesterday’s post, but just in case you didn’t see it – Juli has generously given us a discount code for her shop, we can all celebrate Use the code LLADYBIRDBIRTHDAY for 15% off everything in the Sweet Little Chickadee Shop – patterns, embroidery kits, or those amazing labels. The code is good through Tuesday 5/21. Yay! Thanks, Juli!
– This is TOTALLY random, but my super rad little brother is going to be in the UK this summer, and he was wondering if anyone wants to meet up and possibly show him around or even offer a place to crash for an ight πŸ™‚ Maybe *I* can’t be there (hm, maybe if I sell those clothes I can start a ~London Savings Account~ haha), but baby brother is the next best thing, yeah? Matt is srsly awesome, he’s 23, a little skateboarder d00d, and looks just like me except with a beard πŸ™‚ He’ll be staying in Ashford, which is 30 minutes south of London, from 6/19-7/30.
5-30
Here he is, in Florida last year, bearded and wearing a party hat hahaha
I guess that might be a kind of weird thing to ask, but if anyone is down for a hang, shoot me and email and I’ll send you his contact information πŸ™‚ Maybe you guys can gossip about me or something haha

How’s everyone’s Me-Made-May going this week? πŸ™‚

Me Made May ’13 – Week 2 Round-Up

10 May

Another week of Me-Made-May down! Haha my friends and family were already anticipating this… every time I met up with someone this week, the first question was, “Did you make everything you’re wearing? It is May…” Talk about being supportive πŸ™‚

With that being said, I started off the week (on Saturday, I mean) with a totally crap outfit/photo. WOOF.

5/4
5/4, Saturday
Hoodie: Avocado Hoodie
Tshirt: (hidden, but I promise it’s there!) Organic White Renfrew
Jeans: Imogene+Willie
Shoes: Just some shitty house boots from Urban Outfitters, aha.
The weather took a turn for the COLD on Saturday, and coupled with the rain and the fact that our heat mysteriously stopped working (wtf, srsly), I refused to leave the house and instead snuggled up in my cozy hoodie. I love this hoodie so much.

5/5
5/5, Sunday
Tshirt: Stripey Long-Sleeved Renfrew
Pants: Organic Red Thinlows
Jacket: Gap, reconstructed by me
Shoes: Keds
Bike: Not mine :3
Sunday was still a little cold, but the rain went away so I joined Trisha‘s Farmer’s Market bike ride and I’m so glad I did! Of course, I didn’t bring my bike, but there’s a Bcycle station right outside, so I rented one with my new membership. Anyone heard of these? There are scattered all up and down downtown Nashville, which means I can take little bike rides on my lunch break now YAY.

Also, I feel like I should mention the jacket I’m wearing. I bought it a couple of years ago on eBay for a Halloween costume (I dressed as a hipster, if yr curious haha) but I never wore it after that because it was tooo big. I tried cropping the length – it was originally much longer – and still, too big. I finally just pulled the hem band and sleeve cuffs off, took up the sides (I didn’t even bother with flat-felled seams because, hell), and then reattached the bands. The fit is SO MUCH better now, and now I can finally get some use out of this damn jacket! So pleased with myself haha.

5-6
5/6, Monday
Dress: Simplicity 6268
Trench: Sewaholic Robson
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Urban Outfitters (and they are shitty; never buying shoes there again, ew).
Another cold and rainy day 😦 At least my lace trench is a happy color πŸ™‚

5-7
5/7, Tuesday
Blouse: Simplicity 4676
Skirt: By Hand London Charlotte skirt
Belt: Banana Republic
Shoes: Thrifted
My boss told us we had to look extra-nice today (bc there were company bigwigs visiting the office, woohoo), so this is what I came up with. This is my front door; I was trying to ~mix it up~ with the backgrounds. Probably not going to take pictures here again, soo many cars kept driving by and I was getting self-conscious!
Oh, and because several people have asked: yes, that is a cowboy pig statue to the side. His name is Sergeant Deputy, fyi.

5-8
5/8, Wednesday
Top: Cake Pattern’s Pavlova wrap top
Skirt: Tilly’s Miette wrap skirt
Shoes: Nine West
WRAPPER’S DELIGHT, Y’ALL.
(and yes, I did actually wear those shoes all day… much to my surprise haha)

5-9
5/9, Thursday
Dress: Simplicity 1803
Jacket: Gap, reconstructed by me
Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Born (expect to see these a LOT, I just bought them and I’m kind of in love :))
This outfit makes me sad that I swore no repeats for May… because it is awesome, and my favorite, and I kind of want to wear it every day.

5-10
5/10, Friday
Shirt: Jalie 2921
Skirt: Megan Nielsen Kelly skirt
Belt: Nashville flea market
Shoes: Born
Sorry this picture is so dark and shitty… as you can see, it’s raining AGAIN today. But hey, it’s Friday, so I can’t complain πŸ™‚

Things I learned this week on MMM…
– I need more basic knit tops. I actually have a couple yardages of fun striped knits, plus some solids I just got from Mood the other day… I should probably get cracking on that.
– I forgot how much fun it is to wear crazy bright prints.
– I am SO GLAD I just cut into that denim jacket and made it fit !!! Now I just need a short blazer/jacket that is not denim so I can wear it with jeans and not rock the Canadian Tuxedo look πŸ˜‰

How’s Me-Made-May going for you (if you’re participating)? Have you made any brilliant wardrobe discoveries yet?

Me Made May ’13 – Week 1 Round-up

3 May

First off, thank you SO MUCH for the lovely comments on my lace trench yesterday! SHUCKS, Y’ALL. You sure know how to make a girl feel special πŸ˜‰

Now, let’s round up the first week of Me-Made-May! I know, it’s not a full proper week… but I like to do my round-ups on Friday, soooo deal with it.

5/1
5/1
Dress: Cake Patterns Tiramisu
Cardigan: Miette
Shoes: Nine West
I spent most of this day sitting in a car (on my first ever ~business trip~ woohoo), so I opted for something comfortable that wouldn’t wrinkle. As a side note, those 4+ hours as a passenger meant I got a LOT of knitting done. Expect a sweater post sooner than later, ha.
Also, welcome to the ugly side of my sewing room.

5/2
5/2
Tshirt: Sewaholic Renfrew
Skirt: Vogue 8317
Belt: Banana Republic
Shoes: Thrifted (yes, I’m totally gross and I thrift shoes, DGAF)
I need to find more ways to wear this skirt, because every time I do I get SO many compliments on it (usually in the form of, “Oh, I love that skirt… OMG I LOVE THE BACK!!!!” haha). I think it would be really fun paired with navy, or even teal.

5-3
5/3
Top: Papercut Patterns La Sylphide
Jeans: Imogene+Willie
Shoes: Keds
(not shown: Sewaholic Patterns Minorou jacket)
These jeans are my one piece of “cheat” clothing. MMM is all about focusing on wearing, well, me-mades, but let’s be real here – these are my only pair of jeans (yep!) and May is most likely the very last month I’m going to be able to wear them before it gets too hot for the summer. Considering I paid a shit ton of money for them and I love the everloving shit outta them, I decided the jeans are my free pass as long as the rest of the outfit is LT-made. I mean… they are handmade, just by someone else. That counts, right? πŸ™‚
Also, it’s cold today and I wanted to wear pants. So there.

So that’s that! A short week of Me Made May; next Friday should be a little more interesting πŸ™‚

Now, let’s talk about the new Vogue patterns that just came out.

They are actually pretty boring, sad to say 😦 Like a good 3/4 of them look exactly like patterns that were released last season, or the season before… just different fabrics and/or models. I do want to point out that whoever they have modeling with the red hair is a TOTAL BABE.

V1354
Vogue 1354
Am I right? BABE CITY USA.
I don’t even notice the ridic poses because I’m too busy being jealous THAT I DON’T LOOK LIKE THAT.

Then there’s this:
V8900
Vogue 8900
It’s… interesting. Definitely not a style that many people can pull off (both waist cut-outs AND a top that can barely accommodate a bra), but I don’t think pattern companies necessarily need to make stuff that flatters *everyone*, you know? I’ll give them credit for being interesting, and ignore all those seams that are screaming to be pressed.

Then these happened:
V8913
Vogue 8913
I think we’ve reached a breaking point with these unnecessary buttflaps.

V8914
Vogue 8914
Everything about this is just unfortunate.

V8895
Vogue 8895
Someone please tell me in what world this dress would be considered flattering?! Her head looks so tiny in comparison!

V8897
Vogue 8897
Hideously unflattering tunic aside (which, I might add, is eerily similar to this previous hideously unflattering tunic) it appears that their iron must have exploded during the making of this since NOTHING is pressed. Just looking at that hem is making my eye twitch.

The rest of the patterns are so boring, they put me to sleep. Actually, that’s a great idea. I’m going to print them out and bind them in a little book for the next time I am dealing with insomnia. Thanks, Vogue!

Me-Made-May ’13!

9 Apr

mmay13

Well, folks, it’s official – Me-Made-May is back for 2013! Yay! I had so much fun participating last year – so of course I’m signing up for this round!

‘I, Lauren of LLADYBIRD, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’13. I endeavour to wear a minimum of one handmade garment each day for the duration of May 2013, with no outfit repeats.’

This is basically the same pledge I had last year, but I suspect this year won’t be as easy – I’ve been slowly pulling summer clothes out of storage (I really should just make the swap and put all those winter clothes away; we’re up to nearly 80* at this point), and a good chunk of them are much bigger than they were last year 😦 Some of the stuff can be altered to fit my new size, some I will just need to chuck and remake altogether. Instead of focusing on wearing a different garment every day – something that I easily accomplished last year (gah, my closet) – I will be using MMM’13 to encourage mixing different pieces to create new outfits. I can wear the same shirt every single day in a week if I want to – but it has to be styled in a different outfit, and no outfit repeats. I can do this!

In addition to my shrinking closet, May tends to be a pretty busy month with different specialized outfits (at least, for me!) – it’s Bike month, my Birthday month, and my family generally likes to go on a beach vacation for Memorial Day weekend, which means… Bathing Suit month as well! I guess this means I need to get cracking on those planned swimsuits I bought fabric for, so I can fulfill my MMM requirements even while laying out in the sun πŸ˜‰

Same as last year, I won’t be posting daily outfit photos to my blog (although they will be uploaded to the new Me-Made-May ’13 Flickr page), instead, I will recap every Friday. This should make it easy to skip if you aren’t interested in looking at outfit posts πŸ˜‰

Speaking of Me-Made, I’ll be back later this week with a finished dress πŸ™‚ Honestly, it should be finished by now – it’s been hanging in the sewing room for 3+ days, waiting on a hem – but I’ve spent the entire last week drinking in the sunshine with friends instead. Sewing takes a backburner when there is a pretty spring day to enjoy, amirite? πŸ™‚

Bow print dress sneaky peeky

Here’s a little peek – I used my Betsey Johnson bow print silk. Man, that stuff sucks to sew haha.
