Completed: A Totally Tubular Simplicity 1803

27 Jun

“Tubular” is such a weird word. I mean in the sense when people use it as a synonym for awesome or rad. I mean… it’s literal definition is something that is tube-shaped. What is so rad about a tube? English language, you mystify me.

You know what is pretty radtubular, though? This Simplicity 1803 pattern, yeah! Now that we have set aside our differences, a beautiful relationship can be allowed to bloom. With this in mind, I would like to introduce you to my latest incarnation of Simplicity 1803, heading straight up Awesomeville.

Simplicity 1803, v2
This print is pretty loud in comparison to what I normally wear, but I like it!

Simplicity 1803, v2
There’s not much to say about the construction here – it’s pretty much the exact same as my Disaster dress, although a bit more simple (no underlining, machine-stitched hems, etc). I did discover that the fabric has a very subtle stretch, which made the dress a bit too big… so I ended up with some pretty giant seam allowances at the zipper. We’re talking 1.5″ seam allowances. Yeesh! On the fip side, the stretch makes the dress quite comfortable.

Simplicity 1803, v2
I remembered to put the pockets in the correct place this time! No princess-seam pockets for this girl!

Simplicity 1803, v2
This fabric is just fabulous… a nice, drapey rayon with a hint of stretch, and a really busy pattern that hides sweat – which is quite important these days, considering we are gearing up for a high of 108* later this week. I KNOW.

Simplicity 1803, v2
I did make the waist tie this go-round, although it blends in pretty well with the busy print. Oh well, I guess it provides a bit of texture?

It was difficult to get pictures of this dress – most of them ended up totally blown out with light. I kept moving around to different areas of shade.

Simplicity 1803, v2
Then I noticed the awesome neighborhood stray cat in my back yard!

Yay kitty!
This cat is so cool! He’s super friendly and VERY vocal, and he loves having his belly rubbed. I know he’s skinny as shit, but I’ve actually tried feeding him before & he refuses it. He looks pretty healthy and is definitely quite social, which gives me reason to believe he’s probably someone’s pet prowling around the neighborhood. I see him about once a week and we are best friends. I have named him Bobby, fyi.

THIS CAT
Told you he was friendly 😉

:3
Although he never sits still long enough to get a good picture!

Simplicity 1803, v2
This is the dress front. Again, I went with soft pleats instead of thread gathers on the skirt. I’m a big convert of the soft pleat!

Simplicity 1803, v2
Dress back, lapped zipper.

Simplicity 1803, v2
Orange zipper! Also, check out my massive seam allowances lol

Simplicity 1803, v2
I’m trying it with a belt for work today, I think I like it better than the tie… it breaks up the pattern a bit.

As a side note – I’ve got one sleeve on my Miette sweater now!

Miette Progress
My sleeves is a little shorter than the pattern calls for (I skipped a few rows of stockinette), but I still think it’s a little long for my preferences. I guess that means I have T-Rex arms hahaha.

Miette Progress
This sweater has been really fun to knit, but I’m looking forward to finishing it so I can work on something a little less mindless 🙂

Also, don’t forget to enter my Shabby Apple Giveaway if you haven’t done so already – it closes this Friday 😀

One last thing – I just looked up tubular, and according to dictionary.com: excellent. (Surfing and later general youth slang. Having to do with a tube [wave] that is good to surf in.) : That pizza was totally tubular!

lol Surfers said tubular because the best waves fold over on themselves to create a tube and they would surf through it. So it was always awesome surfing when it got ‘tubular’. (My husband comes from a long line of surfers) Love your dress! I like the funky fabric – totally a different take from what I’ve seen others make with this pattern. Also, I’m very jealous of your knitting skills. I’ve always wanted to learn, so I’m actually enrolled in the craftsy beginners class right now 🙂 I’ve made a nice looking rectangle! Hizzah!

Hehe, yeah, I actually looked it up on dictionary.com because I’m a nerd & that’s what it said… NEVER would have guessed that’s where it came from!

And yay for knitting a rectangle! 😀

Love that dress! I’m a big fan of wild prints, preferably from the 60’s. The louder, the better! It fits you beautifully. Now I’m inspired to pick up that pattern and make it! (I was in a California middle school during the height of the valley girl days and tubular was huge. So was gag me with a spoon!)

  3. Sylvea June 27, 2012 at 11:01 am #

That dress is AWESOME! Love the fabric and how busy it is.

  4. Julia June 27, 2012 at 11:26 am #

I surfed over here from LGRAB, mostly because I am a long time cyclist who also sews! I haven’t blogged about sewing in months and months but I just cut out a plain white shirt with French cuffs for cuff links, so I am sewing more than I did in the Winter. It’s always inspirational to see what other people are doing, both biking and sewing. I love that pattern. I am always looking for wearable dress patterns and not finding them.

    • LLADYBIRD June 27, 2012 at 11:34 am #

How fun! I love meeting other sewing cyclists 🙂 I haven’t had a chance to properly test this dress out to it’s full potential, but I am fairly certain it is going to be perfect for biking. If anything – I mowed the lawn while wearing it last night, haha 🙂

  5. Maddie June 27, 2012 at 11:43 am #

beautiful dress! The pattern is awesome but I especially love those shoes. Very fashion forward. I’m with you in that I’ve never heard the term tubular used for rad.

  6. Mary McCauley June 27, 2012 at 11:56 am #

Lladybird! I wasn’t sure how you were going to pull this print off but you did and I love it! I sew for a living but you know – somewhere along the way I’d forgotten how much I love to sew for me! You’ve inspired me to add a few new duds to my wardrobe. Keep the fun coming:)

  7. Rochelle New June 27, 2012 at 11:59 am #

Tubular indeed! Such an awesome fabric and cute visitor kitty 🙂

  8. Sassy T June 27, 2012 at 12:06 pm #

Now that’s what am talkin about! That fabric kicks a*rse, love it. Am telling ya, la fabric is the biz.

  9. Tasha @ By gum, by golly! June 27, 2012 at 12:37 pm #

Awesome! I love how different it is with this print than the other version! Shall I tell you now that my green skirt had a mix of 7/8″,1/2″ and 3/8″ (those 1st two due to my changes) seam allowances Ha.

    And Miette is looking great!

  10. milchstern June 27, 2012 at 12:56 pm #

That is a wonderful dress! And I like the fabric – it suits you very well.

  11. Lakaribane June 27, 2012 at 1:07 pm #

Ok, that’s it! You have COMPLETELY convinced me my life will be greatly improved by having this pattern, LOL! Love the crazy print. That’s two dresses were you applied the “either showcase the fabric OR the pattern”. IMO the best strategy…

  12. Tanit-Isis June 27, 2012 at 1:20 pm #

I figured it was surfer lingo (since I learnt it from TMNT as a child and as far as I can tell all their lingo was from old surfing movies)…

The dress is gorgeous, I love the crazy print. My lust for this pattern is growing and growing…

  13. scruffy badger June 27, 2012 at 1:21 pm #

Inspired fabric choice. Totally suits the style and is distinctly cute….a far cry from your “look how loud this is” teaser last time….winner!

  14. Marlène June 27, 2012 at 1:29 pm #

Man, you are a knitting machine!!! I love that you’re on your SECOND sweater and you’ve been knitting for less than a year! Amazing. But if your proficiency with sewing is anything to go by, I shouldn’t be surprised!

  15. Seersucker Sally June 27, 2012 at 1:33 pm #

LOVE the little cardigan. Very cute.

  16. punkmik June 27, 2012 at 1:33 pm #

Oh this has made me less scared to think outside of the box when choosing prints on fabric! It looks fantastic!!!

  17. Marie June 27, 2012 at 2:27 pm #

This dress is ace!!! I literally love everything about it and you look as adorable as usual! I can’t believe how fast you’ve knitted up your new sweater…I swear you’re an android, but a very cute one!

Love the shots with the kitty…aaaaw!

  18. elizabeth (aka Lady K) June 27, 2012 at 7:01 pm #

That is an AAAMAZING dress! Love it! wish I could wear yellows/oranges well. Also, when you said 108* I had to run to weather.com and look it up. Same here in Atlanta! O.O Time for me to learn to make shorts, yo.

  19. Lenora Jane June 27, 2012 at 9:27 pm #

I love the pattern (on the fabric, though that seems like a fab dress-shape too, I am a sucker necklines with notches like that!) The tie belt is a little intense with the busy print but I think that’s just my innate prejudice against tie belts rearing its ugly head…?

ALSO this might be the awkwardest comment-question ever but I had a crazy deja vu moment and I have to ask: did you used to (like, five years ago or something) post lots of refashions and clothes surgeries in the recycled clothing forum on Craftster? I used to read the sewing forums over there and if the person I am thinking of is you I always really loved your stuff! and for some reason as I was looking at your blog I just realised that I think you are the same person(!)

    /end of potential creepy commenting!

    • Lenora Jane June 27, 2012 at 9:28 pm #

      …”a sucker for,” even.

    • LLADYBIRD June 27, 2012 at 9:50 pm #

Haha! Not a creepy or awkward comment at all- I did post a lot of reconstructions on Craftster back in the day (and geez, it has been like 5 years… Wtf, it doesn’t feel like it was that log ago!). My username was shesxautomatic. So yeah, probably me 🙂

  20. Jo June 28, 2012 at 4:55 am #

So cute. I really wonder how you manage to keep pulling off those prints. You somehow make it work! 🙂
Also, super jealous at how fast you knit up that Miette. It’s nuts, lol. Mine has taken me foreeeever but guess what? Finally finished, yeeeeha! Hopefully the weather is nice enough to get pics someday soon.
I love the colour you have picked for yours! 🙂

  21. Zoe June 28, 2012 at 6:17 am #

Well isn’t Bobby a total cutie?! And that dress is a stunner! It makes me think of tropical holidays, you should probably go to Hawaii and order the most elborate cocktail you can find!
    xxx

  22. sallie June 28, 2012 at 8:09 am #

Bobby is the spittin’ image of my Mr. Muscles – who’s also very friendly and oh so freaking vocal (especially at 5am)! Anyway! Totally cute dress – I love the print and the shape really suits you. Congrats on wrangling Simplicity 1803 and bending it to your will. Tubular indeed.

  23. Maya June 28, 2012 at 7:19 pm #

Great dress, and really fun fabric.

  24. gingermakes June 28, 2012 at 10:23 pm #

LOVE this! The print is killer, the fit is perfect, and the neckline and sash are perfect details! LOVE it!

  25. Kari June 29, 2012 at 10:05 am #

I’ve been following your blog for awhile, and you are just so talented and entertaining! I just started my own blog after being inspired by so many sewing bloggers, so thanks for the inspiration! Hopefully I’ll be able to keep up with it as well as you do.

  26. Roxy June 30, 2012 at 12:58 am #

Love this dress. The fabric is amazing!!!! I especially love that you mowed the lawn in it. Chores are way more bearable when you are dressed up.
