Me Made May – Week 1 Roundup

4 May

Holy cow, is it Friday already? Where did the week go?

Time for a round-up of the first week of Me-Made-May!

I wanted to put these in a cute little collage, but since Picnik died & left me all alone to grieve in private, you get individual pictures. Them’s the breaks.

Sooo… about that Violet blouse… we need to talk.

The original incarnation just wasn’t doing it for me. I know it’s looks super cute in the pictures, but it was very uncomfortable in real life – mainly because those damn armholes were WAY too low-cut for sleeves. Every time I moved my arms, the whole shirt would ride up. As a result, I never wore it and felt very sad inside since 1. dotted swiss; and 2. cotton batiste, aka my two favorite fabrics that very instant.

So I cut the sleeves off.

Dotted Swiss Violet

I wish I could tell y’all that cutting the sleeves off immediately solved the problem, but that would be a lie. Remember those low armholes? They were so low, sans sleeves, that you could see the whole side of my bra without even being sneaky about it. Which, I mean, I’m definitely known to let it all hang out from time to time, but we’re talking about a freakin swiss dot button up with a peter pan collar here. Not really the right vessel for looking tarty.

I used part of the sleeves to add an extra wedge of fabric at the bottom of the arm hole – I ended up having to raise it a good 2″, and it’s still a little too low but I am NOT in the mood to fiddle with this blouse anymore. I finished with bias tape facing (machine-stitched because, again, NOT in the mood). I also took in the side seams a bit more at the waist to give it some more shape, since I was feeling pretty box-like at that point. I’m not 1000000000% happy with the finished result – it kind of looks, well, homemade – but it’s much better than the sleeved version.

The lesson here: don’t buy a loose, free-flowing boxy blouse pattern when you prefer to wear everything with little to no ease.

On a happy note, look at the newest addition to my house as of last night!
It’s actually Landon’s set, not mine 🙂 But OH MAN it’ll be SO FREAKING NICE to do laundry in my own house! I really love doing laundry (and folding it! Haha!), but I hate dragging it in & out of the house. So I’m pretty excited about this. And yes, this is absolutely relevant to MMM’12 since pretty much all the good stuff is in the dirty clothes bin right now.
Also, check out my reel mower on the right (don’t look at the recycling on the left, please & thank you). I mow my lawn with a reel mower because I’m a BAMF. And also because gas is expensive.

Oh, and my Bombshell dress is almost done – all that is left is securing the vent (seriously, a little 2″ diagonal line haha) and figuring out how I want to attach the strap. It’s lookin’ good and I’m feeling good about it!

I leave you with this –
In case you were ever wondering what it looks like when the plastic cone inside a spool of serger thread crumbles into pure nothing.

Nice! I’ve finally managed a me made item today (I’m signed up for 3 a week), the weekend is going to make it much easier…
I hate doing laundry, I don’t know why, it’s not like I have to do anything other than move it from the washer to the dryer – it’s the folding and putting away I can’t stand! (The huge pile of clean stuff on the kitchen worktop is a testament to that)

I’ll do your laundry for you if you’ll come clean my bathroom 🙂 Hehe

OK, I guess I’m happy for you. And still a little sad for me.

But I love your outfits! Glad you were able to come up with a workable solution for the Violet blouse. What a pain in the ass! I totally buy patterns that don’t jive at all with what I like to wear… silly! Why do we do that?

Sidenote: you look so cute in that robin’s egg blue cardigan– do you have any dresses that shade? It’s a great color for you!

    • LLADYBIRD May 4, 2012 at 12:11 pm #

Haha! Weeeell if it makes you feel any better, the apartment I lived in for 4 years (before I moved to East Nashville) didn’t have a w/d. The closet ‘mat was a few miles away, through a very traffic-y area of town. AND I had to drag that shit up & down stairs! Don’t miss that at all haha!

And thank you! I don’t have a dress in this color… I have a couple of tops, and a skirt. Hm. Need to go buy more fabric haha.

Adorable!! Do you always dress this nicely everyday, or are you making a special MMM’12 effort? My outfits are going to look so casual and ‘dowdy’ next to yours…eeek!

    • LLADYBIRD May 4, 2012 at 12:12 pm #

I work in an office so I do have to dress semi-nice 🙂 Mostly it’s just the clothes that look nice… I’m total shit at accessorizing lol.

omg! you´re such a prolific seamstress! I love your jeans fabric ginger!

Have you tried PhotoScape ( for your photo edition? It´s free, easy and full!!

Oooh, no, but thank you for the link! Downloading now 😀

I totally agree on the Colette arm holes – my violet has been sitting, unloved, for months. Not interested in adjusting them!

  9. Katy May 4, 2012 at 12:39 pm #

Thanks for the tip about the Violet – I may make a sleeveless version when I tackle this – yours looks great. I think this sort of blouse needs to be compatible with a cardi so sleeveless is more versatile. I love all your other outfits, especially the Rooibos, Ginger and Violet!

    • LLADYBIRD May 4, 2012 at 12:40 pm #

Make sure you check those armholes before you cut – they may need to be redrafted a bit higher 🙂

Hey. I used to use Picnik too but I’m now testing out Picmonkey. It looks really similar to Picnik and it’s online. They say the collage feature is coming soon…

    • LLADYBIRD May 4, 2012 at 1:37 pm #

Picmonkey is what I used! I love it, I hope they get the collage up soon.

I also had many, many problems with “violet” … the armhole-problem was just one of it. What a pity … the pattern looks so nice.
I´m really still in love with your rooibos :))

The disintegrating serger cone is freaky, I wonder how that happened? Congrats on your washer/dryer. I remember when we were kids taking clothes the 20 miles to town to do the laundry; it was enough that I know I’ll never live without them, even if they have to be jerry-rigged in my kitchen or something.

    • LLADYBIRD May 4, 2012 at 4:30 pm #

I don’t know, but it definitely is freaky! And only the blue thread spools are the ones disintegrating (yep, all 4 of ’em). I have dozens of spools of serger thread, mostly the same age/brand, all stored the same way and used pretty equally… but only the blue is falling apart. Ghosts, maybe.
