completed: tweed circle skirt

and i’m back to sewing! betcha thought i was gone for reals, huh? too bad!

who participated in the circle skirt sew-along? i had a little issue with time – aka, life got in the way – so i wasn’t able to finish in time for the first ’round of circle skirt party 2011. i was able to finish last night, though! and i’m wearing my new circle skirt today! and lucky me – i spilled coffee all over it this morning so it even smells good! /sarcasm.

circle skirt
this was a really easy pattern to draft & put together. i was able to smoosh mine out of one piece of fabric & eliminate any side seams (well, on the shell fabric – the lining was only 45″ wide, so there are seams in there!). although i was a tiny bit ambitious with my original length, and ended up cutting about 5″ off the finished piece. yikes! longer skirts & i just don’t mix, i’m afraid.

my shell fabric is a lovely wool tweed i bought at the flea market for $3. it actually has a herringbone pattern, which you can see on the swatch. it is lined with silky bemberg rayon – my favorite! i went with a pretty pink because, well, pink lining! the zipper is a faced slash zipper, hand-picked. i ran out of my original tweed fabric (or, rather, i had already done away with the scraps because that is how i roll), so it is faced with brown cotton… which i’m thinking was probably for the best, as the tweed is a slightly loose weave & tends to unravel. dropping in the lining was easy: i slashed a zipper opening & slipstitched it to the zipper. the top was basted to the top of the skirt shell, which is covered by the waistband. the lining is hemmed with a rolled hem and the shell has 2″ horsehair braid all around the edges – i used a little over 4 yards of braid! and i hand-stitched it all because i clearly have nothing better to do with my time.

circle! skirt!

i really love the shape the horsehair braid gives the hem. it has a very nice subtle flair. i actually have a petticoat i made using sugardale’s tutorial (which is AMAZING, by the way. this is a good ‘un, people!), but i prefer the way the skirt looks with the braid. also, i made my petticoat with horsehair crinoline, so it has great body but EW ITCHY.

so there you have it! my first circle skirt!

lladybird: more summer 2011

25 Jul

i actually don’t have much to show here. i’ve been in a sewing frenzy/rut for the past week, alternating between feeling like i work in a sweatshop & not wanting to even go near my sewing room. part of the problem is the mess – oh god the mess. i’m the kind of person who cleans up her workspace at the end of every day… and right now, there are piles everywhere. it’s awful, but i don’t have time to clean. and i should be packing this stuff up anyway. arghhh!!

okay, i’m done complaining! promise!

another ginger – western style

28 Jun

i love this ginger pattern, y’all. it’s so easy to sew, flattering to wear, etc etc. after casey posted a tutorial for scalloped pockets, i knew i needed to make another one asap. here’s the fun part of the story – i stopped by a moving sale on my way to the fabric store (i needed to have my scissors sharpened & i thought i would buy some khaki twill to make into a western-y skirt) and ended up buying a gigantic bag of fabric for $20… including 4 yards of khaki twill! haha i love it when this stuff works out in my favor!

i still got my scissors sharpened, though. they now cut like a hot knife through buttah. and the scissor man complimented my excellent choice in shears. yes, i blushed.

completed: the colette ginger skirt

16 Jun

ah, the colette ginger skirt. a project that should have been quick & simple (do i hear the warning bells ringing in your head yet? how about now?). of course, “quick & simple” isn’t really an option for me, so i added a few extra steps to make myself feel like i was accomplishing something. and herein lies the rub: my two hour skirt ended up turning into a 4 hour skirt. and, as much as i’d love to pass this blame on someone else, i can’t. sometimes, we just gotta take this stuff in stride & accept the fact that we make things harder for ourselves. or wait, is that just me? whatever.

i *love* how dramatic this pattern is. eventually, i would like to try the full skirt with the suspenders (too much? oh well). the pants i could live without, but clearly the previous owner was all about them. i bought this pattern at my favorite secret thrift store for 25¢ are you jealous

vogue 8603- purple skirt

10 Feb

… and i’m back from another hiatus! this time it was due to apartment troubles and subsequent moving (i really love sewing, but my apartment was literally 30*F! too cold to do anything except huddle under the covers!). i finished moving and unpacking last week, so hopefully i am back in action 😀

this skirt is the first thing i have made in well over a month… i was a little apprehensive at first (not gonna lie – i was afraid i had ~lost my touch~ since i was out of practice haha) but it went together beautifully and i am very pleased with the final result! especially the fit!

i used vogue 8603 as my pattern. the only adjustment i made to the pattern was i used an invisible zipper instead of a regular zipper.
my fabric is some lovely grape linen-look cotton that i bought on sale at hancock’s… i lined the skirt with this crazy periwinkle blue rayon that i found in my stash.
