Laurence King really has cornered the market on these cute little sewing books, haven’t they?
Their newest offering, Sweet Dress Book by Yoshiko Tsukiori, is just as saccharine as the title suggests. Beautifully photographed (guys, there is a FLUFFY CAT in like half the pictures omgomg) and illustrated, the book includes 6 patterns and enough variations to make a total of 23 different outfits.
Each pattern incorporates a different technique – french sleeve, no darts, straight-cut, pants and playsuits, raglan sleeve, and with darts – and has three variations to make a full range of clothing. This being a Japanese pattern book, the instructions are laid out differently than standard sewing patterns – there is a list of steps and a numbered illustration (or two, or three!) to show how everything goes together. I don’t think the patterns in this book are nearly as complicated as the ones in Drape Drape – a confident beginner should be able to navigate their way through these.
While the patterns in the book aren’t necessarily my cup of tea, style-wise, it’s still really fun to flip through for inspiration. The model is freakin gorgeous and I love the way the letters are illustrated to look like ribbons. Sweet, right? Oh, and the book also includes a recipe for cupcakes. If anything, I will definitely be testing that one out… for science.
Before you go nuts with the credit card, I should mention this book isn’t available to the public just yet. It will hit the market on 8/20!
Laurence King has generously offered an extra copy for one of you lucky peeps, so let’s have a giveaway! If you’d like to enter to win your very own Sweet Dress Book, simply leave a comment on this post and let me know your favorite sweet. This giveaway is open worldwide and I will close the comments next Monday, 8/19, at 9 AM CST.
Good luck!

I taught myself to sew using Japanese pattern books! I would love to win this… My favorite sweet is a jar of Nutella.
Any combination of chocolate and peanut butter. I can’t behave responsibly around such things.
Cuteness! These books are exactly my style. I own one Japanese pattern mook still in Japanese, and I have to say that even untranslated they are totally usable. I love the step by step, diagram/photo heavy approach they take. Plus the body build they’re designed for seems to suit mine, as US patterns are usually waaaay too wide across the body.
It’s too bad our local bookstore appears to have only bought surplus back issues for super cheap and doesn’t actually regularly sell them. Mine is from 2009, and no new stock in sight. :<
Fangirling aside, my favorite sweet is puto! It's a kind of rice cake. Soooo good with cheese.
My favorite sweet right now is a drink I had a a local pub/brewery/distillery that was fresh citrus juices with maraschino liqueur and rum. MMMmmmm.

The fabric used for the cover blouse is so pretty!
My favorite sweet is my grandmother’s fruit dumplings!
I love banana pudding…and your blog š
OMG!I love this book!My favourite sweet? My banana icecream!!!!
Ohh, I love Japanese dress books! I’ve either seen this one or one very similar to it around, the silhouettes are so lovely. I also like that they have variations, I tend to tweak patterns to include variations as I make them, so it’s nice if an option already exists for what I want to do (especially since my on-the-fly edits don’t work half the time…). My favorite sweet is Marzipan! Especially if it’s covered in chocolate or shaped like a small fruit š
oh, I am such a huge japanese pattern fan… I would love to be included in the give away… and if I don’t win, I will drown my sorrows in avocado, banana and honey smoothies!
That last one has a bit of a caped Sherlock Holmes in a giant dollop of frosting feeling that I rather enjoy. And even though I’ve entered approximately 800 contests for this publisher I’ve not yet to actually WIN one of these books and I am nighty curious about their famed instructions….
Hmm favourite sweets.. Its a difficult battle between chocolate and sour sweets! I think chocolate wins.. Please count me in for the give away, I would love to try another japanese book, Ive only tried patterns from Drape Drape..
Easy: peanut butter chocolate chunk cookies. And I’m off sugars right now so I would literally kill someone for one. š
That looks like a great book and because the patterns are so simple they would be easy to personalize and reshape. My favorite sweet is a peanut butter cookie, or dark chocolate.
