Pardon the all-caps explosion here, but I’m freaking EXCITED AS FUCK right now!
I’m going to New York City in March!! YAAAAY!!
I am SO EXCITED to finally get to meet up with my favorite sewing-land babes, Sonja and Oona, as well as *finally* lurk the shit out of Mood… as well as the entire garment district, just, in general. Omg. Omg I can’t wait !!!
I know there are at least a good solid handful of y’all who also reside in and/or travel to New York on a regular basis so here’s my relevant question… anyone interested in a lil meet-up? I’m thinking Saturday March 9th (or we could do Friday the 8th! I just figured more people would be able to do a Saturday π ), meeting up for drinks or food and then checking out some fabric stores! So yeah, let me know if you’re interested – either in the comments, or shoot me an email! I had so much fun at the Chicago meet-up, I want to recreate that day with some New Yorkers! Pleaseeee!! π
Here is a hideously bad picture of me the last time I was in New York, in 2008. As you can see, I was very excited about Grand Central Station.
And while I have your attention, I’d like to introduce y’all to my very first sponsor:
Hellooooo, Sweet Little Chickadee! Juli’s shop is full of patterns – both sewing and embroidery – as well as some of the cutest handmade jewelry I’ve ever seen. She just added some new patterns from The Maker’s Journal – a new-to-me company who is based out of Australia and has a LOT of cute undie patterns, omg.
And check this out – she had graciously agreed to give my US readers some free shipping love! Use the code “LLADYBIRDROCKS!” to get free US shipping – US orders under $35 get free first-class mail shipping, and US orders over $35 get free priority mail shipping. Combine that with the amazing pattern sale running right now, and yeah…. you really can’t beat that with a stick. The code is good now until 1/31/13, so hurry and get yo’ shop on π
If you are interested in some sweet sponsor ad love (sewing and vintage related only, pls) of your very own, holler at me via email and we’ll see if we can work something out π
Since we love Andrew WK here, I feel like this song is quite appropriate.
Fabric shopping in NYC is the best! Make sure you take an extra, empty suitcase!
I just picked up the Kelly Skirt from Sweet Little Chickadee–thanks for suggesting the shop and pattern sale π
I am planning on it! Southwest lets you check 2 bags for free, so at the very least I’ll bring an extra duffel bag for fabricsss π
Kelly skirt is next on my list to buy, so consider me jealous haha
Congratulations!!! You are going to have a blast! I agree, a separate suitcase or a big duffel bag to carry back all your fabric-booty! And already have some patterns in my cart at Sweet Little Chickadee, thanks!
I live in Australia and hadn’t heard of that pattern maker! So I’m off to check out those patterns.
Can’t wait to hear about your NY trip!!! I’m off to London in April & meeting up, it’s a mere 24 hr plane trip. Yup Australia really is light years from anywhere. And Yes, I’m planning to knit!!!!
I was going to say – I hope you’re bringing some knitting for that plane ride! 24 hours, you are quite a trooper!
It’s a ridiculously long time. Fortunately the jet lag hits coming home – so holiday time is maximized!
Oddly enough, for someone that seems to be based out of Australia, it costs more to have something posted to Australia than America. I am a little confused right now…
If Chickadee is based in America and stocking Australian patterns that she then has to post back to Australia you probably need to look for a supplier closer to Australia. The Maker’s Journal has an Etsy shop too.
Thanks so much for the mention! That’s so exciting you’re going to New York!! I went there (for the first time ever!) last Fall and it was so cool! I went to Mood and got super excited when I got to actually pet Swatch the dog!! Haha, yes, agree with previous comments… definitely take an extra suitcase! Gah, so much fun!
Lladybird – So happy you get to go to NYC, but just an FYI – check the year of the calendar you are referring to since March 11 and 12, 2013 are a Monday/Tuesday, not a Friday/Saturday. π
Agreed – I would love to join you guys depending on the dates (and cost of flights etc).
Fixed it! Should be Sat 3/9 or Fri 3/8… sorry about that π
If there’s a Southwest in your city, check their flights bc they are pretty cheap right now… I was able to get a round trip ticket for under $200!
HAHA thank you for catching that! I’m such a dumbass :B Updated – I meant to type March 9th, as I’m flying in on the 7th haha
That’s so exciting that you’ll be in New York !! I’d totally be down for a sewers meetup. Keep me posted!!
Yes ma’am! π
So tempting! I live in Philadelphia but it’s super cheap to go on the Megabus. I went once to NYC with the hopes of seeing Mood, but it was a Sunday so it was closed. I’d love to check it out and drink some beerz with some sewing ladiez.
Ooh, you should! The Megabus is so much fun, and we can all get our drink on and then freak out at Mood haha π
Yes please! I went to the Sew Weekly one and it was AMAZING. I had been hoping to get to do one again last year, but I worked on weekends so it was never possible. I live about 2 hours out of the city so its no problem for me to get there. SO EXCITED!
Fuck yeah!
I am totally interested! I don’t have a blog, is that okay? (Joking, kind of?)
Haha of course it’s fine! I got your email, so as long as I have a way to contact you it’s all good π
CAN’T. FREAKIN’. WAIT. That is all.
MEEEE TOOO!!! ahhh!!
Ooh I’m interested! I’m an Australian travelling around USA and Canada at the moment and *might* be in New York in early March! And if not, I’d be really interested in hearing where you go so I can hit all the good spots when I eventually get to NY π
Ah, such perfect timing if it works out! We’ll keep ya posted regardless:)
I just discovered Sweet Little Chickadee the other day, I ordered the Megan Nielsen Briar pattern, the shipping was only $2 so I am not too broken up about missing the code here, but I just wanted to say that she shipped it almost immediately and wrote a nice note in the comments, seems like a great shop! I have always wanted to go to Mood, have fun!
I might be interested, depending on which day you do (can’t do Saturday, religious restriction(s), and my work schedule. But I’d be excited to meet you, if I end up able to.
O no!!! I’m going to New York in the spring too (and as I live in London it is a BIG DEAL! Argh!!!) but I’m going at the beginning of April! Wish it was March now so I could come along to the meet up!!
Ah, I was originally planning for April but I had some vacation time that I needed to use up before the end of March. Boo! At least we’ll hopefully have a good list of places for you to check out, yeah? π
You need to make meeting at 8th march%)) Do you know this is Women day? %))

I’d love to meet up! I’m actually in the city this weekend visiting my sister and would love another excuse to come back soon. Keep me posted!!
Yes! I’ll put you on the list!
I would love to meet up! I had tried a couple of times to meet up with oona before she left for L.A. last year so it’d be great to meet her too! Saturday would be better, but since I live in the city I should be able to take the day off work on Friday with enough notice. I look forward to it!
Yay! Yes to the extra suitcase, or just mailing yourself a big old box.
While I understand your excitement, I don’t care for your choice of words. Enjoy your trip. I am no longer reading your blog.
Enjoy your trip. While I appreciate your excitement, I don’t appreciate your choice of descriptive words. I guess I will stop reading your blog.
Posting it twice to get your point across, eh? Ok, bye!!!
i love you so fucking much.
CAN’T WAIT!!!!!
Love you too, lady!!! π
Omg if I had the cash for a transatlantic flight and the time off work I would so be there at the meetup! You’ll just have to have fun for me ; )
How fun! I would love to join you if I can work out a babysitter and all! I could take the train in and meet you all. Would love a chance to shop at Mood and meet some of my favorite sewing bloggers!
AH!! Lucky girl! I was in NYC that exact same time last year and had a ball. Since you are into knitting as well, be sure to hit Purl Soho (in Soho, did I really just tell you that?!) because it’s divine. It’s also where I had a Tim Gunn and Annie Lebovitz spotting, so it has a special place in my heart. Oh, I’m so thrilled for you, enjoy your blogger meet up and have a BLAST!
Just a lurker here, but I’m in New York for 3 months (until the end of March, without my sewing machine, alas! I’ve been teaching myself to knit) and I’d love to participate in a sewing meetup! My email address should be in my public profile…
Omgosh, I’ve been thinking to come out to New York soon (I live near DC — Megabus!) to do fabric shopping. I’d love to join up! My email address is in my details. π
Also a lurker! Love your blog – new year’s resolution is to start a sewing blog… but hasn’t happened yet. Would love to come to the meet up if it is on Saturday! C
I also would appreciate your cleaning up your language. I have read every blog since this network started, and this is the first time I have been offended.
Nope, sorry.
If “nope sorry” means you still need to swear and use the F word to communicate your sewing enthusiasm I will also stop reading your blog. I am sorry this is the case because I love what you sew, your style and enthusiasm. Sorry too.
If it really bothers you so much that you can’t ignore/skim it, then feel free to follow me in the Mood Sewing Network where my posts are edited π However, I see no need to edit my personal blog any further than i already do (and trust me, its pretty toned down from how i normally talk) and I hope that you can understand that.
Another lurker chiming in to say that I LOVE your blog. You combine serious sewing savy with a fabulous sense of your own style, & you’re hilarious. Keep it up–keep it all up! I was in NYC over Christmas–if I was going to be there in March I would definitely enjoy meeting-up. I bet you’re even funnier in person.
I’d totally be up for drinks, sewing talk and general debauchery, add me to your list!
Everything about this post is awesome! Congrats on the upcoming trip and on your first sponsor. I just spent WAY too much time perusing the patterns at Sweet Little Chickadee, and they’re really making me want to finally learn to sew!
Also? I’m really digging the ongoing Andrew WK love.
I’m (yet another) blogless lurker, and like Lisette I’m only ~2 hours outside NYC and I’ve been dying to go fabric shopping. My coworker – a self-proclaimed garment district veteran – is kind of insistent on coming too, if we can both manage to get that Saturday off.
I also used that sale to buy the patterns for both Renfrew and Thurlow, which I kind of had to after seeing all of the ones you’ve made – especially Brown Old Man Pants, which should totally be a band name.
I’m so down for a meet up, that sounds amazing! I’m in Brooklyn, lets do it!
Hooray, an excuse for pattern purchasing! I just used the sale + code to pick up the Anise & Cordova jackets, and the long-coveted Alma blouse, so thank you!
Also I’m not sure if it’s creepy to join in a meet-up as a lurker fan of your blog, but I do live in Brooklyn … so maybe!
Totally not creepy – some people just prefer to lurk, nothing wrong with that π
How about inviting Peter Lappin at Male Pattern Boldness to your gathering in NY. He really seems to know his way around the garment district too.
I want to meet Peter for sure! I’m a bit shy, so I gotta work up the nerve to email him first though π Haha!
Peter’s great! I met him last time and he’s very nice and down to earth about coming to these things π
Jealous!!! SO JEALOUS!!! Aw man… you’re gonna have a blast!
Thank you for your suggestion that I just follow you on the edited Mood Network. That would be preferable to me. I was confused about the difference in blogs since I got to your personal blog through the Mood site. I agree that you are entitled to express yourself as you prefer in your personal blog. Good luck to you and enjoy your trip to NYC.
No worries, glad we could work something out that suits everyone. Thank you for understanding π See ya on the Mood Network!
Hell yeah I’m in for Saturday! I”ve been enjoying your blog for quite some time. Looking forward to meeting you!
I live in New York and would love to meet some fellow sewers π
Wow do you always get so many objections to your language? As a New Yorker I have a mighty filter, I guess, and I appreciate you so unapologetically being yourself. I’d love to meet up in March! Saturday is definitely best.
Yeah, I dunno! I guess if that’s the only drama I deal with, I’ll take it π Haha!
I totally want to meet up. When I first moved to NYC Gingermakes organized a great intro to the fabric district with other sewist/bloggers. Hope I can tag along on yours too. I would love to meet you.
Wow! I’m so envious! Love your blog, Lauren. Wish I could make it too. I would love to meet you and drool at Mood.
Sometimes being on a tiny island on the other side of the world has its downsides. So jealous!
I recommend The Meatball Shop on the LES!
Ooh ooh me! Because here is a cool little story for you: I started sewing last year and following your blog at the same time. I’d just finished my intro to sewing class and bad a pencil skirt and dress. I saw your post on the bombshell dress and asked if you thought I could hack it. You were really encouraging and awesome so I did it. (pic here: http://tinyurl.com/awsm4fs). So then Gertie had a book party in NYC so I went so I could meet her and show off my dress. Now, I am much more of a knitter than a seamstress. I just started a knitwear design line and I met people at Gertie’s party from Kollabora, who then commissioned me to design a sweater for them using their yarn. And then. And then. They brought it to Vogue Knitting Live for display. I am not even kidding. So had you not encouraged me to do that dress, that all probably wouldn’t have happened! So I have to meet you and buy you a drink or some food or something.
Also, you should go to B&J and Paron fabrics. They are pricier but just soooooo luxurious.
Wow, holy shit! That story is AWESOME!! So glad I could have a little hand in it (although, to be fair, I bet it would have happened to you anyway π ). And yes, I would totally love to meet you – and see some of your knitwear, duh! π
My heart is broken that I will be missing you in NYC by 2 weeks – drat! I hope you have an AMAZING trip – I cannot wait to see what you buy because the fabric is just out of this damn world!!!!
I can’t believe this is only a little over a week away. Crazy. Looking forward to a meetup. I live an hour from NYC and have still never been to Mood. Smack my hand! Safe travels, Lauren, and see everyone on the 9th if that’s still the date.
Shelley
Yessss!!! I’m so excited! As soon as I figure out the exact time for the meet-up, I’ll be sending an email, so keep your eyes out for that π
