Wishful Thinking: A Birthday Wish List

14 May

My birthday is a week from today (hands up if you’re a May Baby too!), which means I spent the better part of this morning cultivating the perfect wish list. I LOVE making wish lists, the lurking & clicking around is *almost* as fulfilling as actually buying the stuff :B In the interest of keeping my blog sewing-and-knitting-related (and not to bore any of y’all to oceans of tears), I will try to keep this relevant. “Try” being the key word here, trololol.

First stop: fabric!

red floral lace
Wine Floral Lace (Mood Fabrics)
Ever since Vogue came out with the gorgeous lacy 8766, I’ve been hunting for the perfect (and budget-friendly!) lace to make my very own version. I love that this lace isn’t terribly delicate, and at $18/yard, it’s not too painful to imagine actually buying it.

ivory bemberg rayon lining
Ivory Bemberg Rayon Lining (Mood Fabrics)
A soft ivory lining would look stunning under that red lace.

black dot eyelet
Black Polka Dot Eyelet (Mood Fabrics)
Sticking with the lace trend, I am loving pretty eyelets for summer. Close your eyes & imagine this made up with Simplicity 1803, the pink dress. And it’s only $10/yard?! HOLD ME.

teal bemberg rayon lining
Teal Bemberg Rayon Lining (Vogue Fabrics)
I’m thinking a bright teal lining would be lovely under that black eyelet.

floral jacquard cotton voileFabulous Floral Jacquard Cotton Voile (Gorgeous Fabrics)
I am just loving voile for the summer – it’s so light & breezy & feel wonderful against the skin. I loooove this floral voile with it’s pretty citrusy bright colors.

rose jersey
Night Roses Jersey (Gorgeous Fabrics)
And this rose jersey is just stunning! It totally deserves to be a long long maxi dress, something very simple to let the fabric take center stage, like the Mission Maxi from Jamie Christina.

And let’s throw some pretty cottons in there while we’re at it… I need some summery circle skirts 🙂

floral fabric
Red Floral Print (Mood Fabrics)
Ouch, this one is $35/yard! It’s ok, though, my dreams don’t have to have a budget lol.

pixelated roses fabric
Rose Floral Print (Mood Fabrics)
Pixelated Roses?! GET IN MY LIFE.

cambie pattern
Cambie Dress by Sewaholic Patterns
I LOVE this pattern! In all honesty, had Tasia released this pattern a few days earlier, I absolutely would have bought it instead of Jalie 2921 (not that I regret my Jalie purchase – I love it! – I just think the Cambie dress is 100000000x cuter). Maybe I’ll buy it for myself as a birthday present 🙂 I think it would be prettier than ever in that floral cotton voile.

hazel pattern
Hazel Dress by Colette Patterns
From the new Spring’12 line of Colette patterns, the Hazel dress really piqued my interest. I have a pretty red/white/blue striped fabric that I think would lend itself really well to this design.

betty panties
Betty High Waist Panties by Ohhh Lulu
If you’re not familiar with Ohhh Lulu, her shop is full of the most delicious underthings that I currently cannot afford. I can afford a pretty little high-waisted panty pattern, though!

chaco liner pen
Clover Chaco Liner Style Pen from A Fashionable Stitch
I guess a marking pen is kind of a dorky thing to put on a wishlist, but I was elated when Sunni started stocking these in her shop. I can’t source these things anywhere locally, and I’ve been dying to try them out (plus, I have a refill bouncing around my sewing room… I got it from the flea market lol). Sunni is a magical mindreader person, truth.

knit sock love book
Knit.Sock.Love by Cookie A
I actually picked this book up from our local library, but one quick flip through the pages & it’s heartbreakingly obvious that I just need to pony up & buy my own copy.

paint by number
Native American Spirit Paint by Numbers
Confession: I love paint-by-numbers (and you thought the Chaco pen was dorky!). I try to find the very worst ones in the store and this one… definitely takes the cake. The bald eagle up in the corner is the best part.

Oh, and here, have some shoes:

steve madden wildness
WILDNESS Platform shoes by Steve Madden

olympia wedges
Olympia Espadrille sandal by Franco Sarto

I never claimed to have good taste when it comes to shoes.

So what do you think? Got a birthday coming up? Are you a May Baby (high five!)? Any longing for a particular product that I haven’t mentioned here? I want to hear all about it! LET’S DREAM TOGETHER, Y’ALL 😀

Ok, that one fabric from mood is pretty but $35/yard for a cotton poly blend???? Am I missing something?

    • LLADYBIRD May 14, 2012 at 2:03 pm #

I’m assuming it’s because it’s drapery fabric – they seem to be able to get away with charging more for that stuff. It’s 110″ wide, though, wow, I didn’t even notice that haha. That is WIDE.

      • Anonymous May 15, 2012 at 11:02 am #

So I just sent a birthday present your way. Should be in your email.

        • LLADYBIRD May 15, 2012 at 11:05 am #

Omg, thank you SO SO SO much! Totally just made my day 🙂 You are awesome ♥

          • Anonymous May 18, 2012 at 11:24 am #

Did you get Hazel?? I’m really interested to see how you do the full bust adjustment.

            • LLADYBIRD May 18, 2012 at 11:26 am #

I DID! Eeee I should be receiving it in the mail soon 😀 I will def post some FBA progress pictures for ya!

  2. irononmaiden May 14, 2012 at 2:38 pm #

I have that exact teal Bemberg lining from Vogue. (I may have gone insane at their warehouse sale a few months back and bought an entire bolt of it.) I’d be happy to send you some–I had been wanting to show my appreciation for your super-helpful posts about sewing with knits. Email me with your mailing address, and it shall be yours!

    • LLADYBIRD May 14, 2012 at 2:40 pm #

Well! If you have a bit you don’t mind passing on, I would love sew it up into something fancy… but please don’t feel obligated! Sending you an email now 🙂

  3. symondezyn May 14, 2012 at 2:47 pm #

Dont’cha just LOOOOOVE Bemberg??? I like to cuddle it and touch it when no one’s looking… ok even when someone’s looking LOL. I actually bought that exact teal colour of Bemberg for my upcoming wearable muslin for my Licorice dress (of course I paid double for it, being in Canada) – I couldn’t stop touching it so I had to put it away LOL.

    • LLADYBIRD May 14, 2012 at 2:50 pm #

I know! Part of it makes me sad that it’s a lining fabric, so the rest of the world can’t see it or cuddle too… but at the same time, I am selfishly happy that it will spend the entire day next to my skin haha

      • symondezyn May 14, 2012 at 3:06 pm #

LOL I know what you mean, although since I take the bus, perhaps it’s for the best that my cuddly fabric stay on the insides where strangers can’t see (or touch!) it 😛 – that being said, I picked up a remnant of orange Bemberg awhile back and wondered if I could get away with making a little summery top out of it – have you ever been tempted to do that? Do you think one could get away with it? LOL If not… it could make a lovely chemise 🙂

        • LLADYBIRD May 14, 2012 at 3:10 pm #

I’m in the boat where I think lining fabric is too obvious to wear as garment fabric – to me, it just looks like lining fabric. Plus, if it’s a fun color like orange, it will be a nice surprise on the inside of a dress bodice or something 🙂

          • symondezyn May 14, 2012 at 3:27 pm #

Definitely!! 😀 I have a sheer red cotton/tencel blend that i was thinking of making as a summery dress, and the orange would make a perfect lining 🙂

            • LLADYBIRD May 14, 2012 at 3:28 pm #

YES! With an orange zipper 🙂 Hehe!

  4. MarrieB May 14, 2012 at 2:58 pm #

The Chaco pen isn’t dorky at all. I finally got one of these, and it’s pretty neat. (I found mine an Joanne’s in the quilting notions area – they don’t stock it with the sewing notions for some reason.) But a word of caution, the blue and yellow chalk can be hard to get out of some fabrics. Also, love the idea of that black eyelet over the teal Bemberg – you gotta do that!

    • LLADYBIRD May 14, 2012 at 3:26 pm #

Ohhhhh, I never thought to look in the quilting notions. And that is good to know about the chalk being hard to get out of fabrics – I wouldn’t have figured that out until it was too late aha.

  5. zoeope May 14, 2012 at 3:21 pm #

Hi five!!! My birthday is one day before yours. Wow, you do have a list there. Hoping you get most if not all of it. All I want is a dress form but don’t think I will be getting it cos of budget. Still glad though. Life goes on. 🙂

    • LLADYBIRD May 14, 2012 at 3:22 pm #

Hehe, I’ll probably end up buying it all for myself once I lift my fabric/pattern buying ban 🙂 CAN’T WAIT.

And happy (early) birthday! Yeah May Babies! 😀

  6. CGCouture May 14, 2012 at 3:25 pm #

High five from another May baby! 😉 Your wish list is a lot more interesting than mine was. Hopefully, you’ll get something on your list from someone. I must say that while I’m not huge on the paint by numbers, I love me a tacky fuzzy poster…

    • LLADYBIRD May 14, 2012 at 3:26 pm #

Oh, fuzzy posters are FUN! I guess I just love tacky wall art haha.

      And hey-o, May Baby 😀

      • CGCouture May 14, 2012 at 3:29 pm #

Is it that, or do we just like to color? I’ve been known to steal pages out of my son’s coloring books too…..

        • LLADYBIRD May 14, 2012 at 3:30 pm #

Well, it’s a bonus if the tacky wall art involves some artistic involvement on your behalf… then it’s totally ok to hang it up, since, y’know, you made it 🙂

  7. Sarah W. May 14, 2012 at 5:35 pm #

    Eyelet fabric–yes!

  8. ReadyThreadSew May 14, 2012 at 6:05 pm #

You must get a Chaco liner (if someone doesn’t buy you one). I bought a yellow one a while ago and it’s the best marking tool I’ve come across. I splurged last week and bought the blue, pink and white, plus refills for all of them.

  9. theknittingarchaeologist May 14, 2012 at 6:47 pm #

Dude, your pattern wish list just totally migrated over to my own. Must make those high waist panties!!

  10. Meg May 14, 2012 at 7:13 pm #

Sending birthday wishes your way and hoping that someone buys you a Mood gift certificate. Hmm, maybe we need to start a Mood birthday club or something where customers get a discount or little bonus on their birthday….

    • Meg@Mood May 14, 2012 at 7:15 pm #

Oops, thought my user name was going to come through as Meg@Mood like it usually does…

    • LLADYBIRD May 15, 2012 at 8:39 am #

If you start a birthday club, I will totally be your, er, guinea pig 🙂 Haha! I LOVE that kind of stuff because I always buy myself at least a couple of presents for my birthday 🙂

  11. fern1knits May 14, 2012 at 10:07 pm #

Those shoes are fantastic! Actually, I love everything on your birthday wishlist! I’m an early June baby, and hope for similar things for myself.

  12. smschrader May 15, 2012 at 2:48 am #

Oh man, I wish my Joann’s carried that paint by number! I’m doing a running wild horses one right now, but that one is crazy awesome.

  13. Pippa May 15, 2012 at 5:23 am #

Oh how lovely, and Yay for May birthdays, Mines next friday. Need to get some planning in for it though…

    • LLADYBIRD May 15, 2012 at 8:38 am #

Happy early birthday! 🙂 If it makes you feel better, I don’t have anything planned yet either lol. Just my dress! 🙂

  14. ShanniLoves May 15, 2012 at 6:55 am #

I’m a May Baby!!! Love those yellow sandals. I just bought a similiar pair. I found them at Payless. Score! I don’t know what it is but I’m a cheapo when it comes to shoes. I’ll gladly blow all my money on handbags and fabric and not even flinch but when it comes to buying shoes I’d rather go barefoot. I’m really in love with that wine floral lace. Happy Birthday!!

    • LLADYBIRD May 15, 2012 at 8:37 am #

Haha, see, shoes are the one thing I’m loathe to cheap out on. Cheap shoes hurt my feet way too much, and I figure since I save so much on purses (thrift store, yo) and clothing, I can afford to drop some $$ on shoes. But… I love being barefoot. If I could be barefoot all day/everywhere, I’d totally do it haha.

      Yay May Babies! 🙂

  15. Casey May 15, 2012 at 7:57 am #

Love all the yummy fabrics! 😀 I’ve been eyeing that rose jersey too; my inlaws were sweet enough to grant my wish of a GF gift certificate for my birthday (after repeated and not-so-subtle hints from me), which I promptly spent on fabric. hehe. Though not that one… :/ Boo! I’m eyeing the chalk marking pens too from Sunni and figuring out how I can justify buying that, the new Sewaholic dress and the panties pattern soon. But I’ve not had a ton of sewing time lately, so I’m slightly loathe to buy more stuff to make (or use with sewing, as the case may be). lol.

Hope you get a couple of your birthday wishes granted!

  16. sallie May 15, 2012 at 8:51 am #

Oh Fabrics for birthdays sounds perfect!! And oh my god that paint by numbers is hilarious!!

  17. Trice May 15, 2012 at 2:13 pm #

    Happy soon-to-be Birthday.
I just got my hands on the Cambie dress pattern myself. I can’t wait to start making this.
Keep an eye out on your inbox for me. 🙂

    • LLADYBIRD May 15, 2012 at 2:18 pm #

I can’t wait to see your Cambie – I bet it will be gorgeous!
And thank you so so much! ♥

  18. Janice May 15, 2012 at 3:26 pm #

    Happy birthday!!!

I use the chaco pen liner, and it’s saved my hands from being really dry thanks to the chalk.

  19. meredith May 15, 2012 at 3:34 pm #

Happy birthday!! (Yay May babies!) I totally have that black polka dot eyelet from Mood! I wanted it for a something similar to Simplicity 1803, but I still haven’t decided on the perfect fabric for lining … that teal rayon would be pretty gorgeous though! (I am totally using parts of your wishlist to augment my own birthday wishlist!)

  20. stacyverb May 15, 2012 at 4:02 pm #

Oh, this list is getting me excited about summer! Pretty dresses, colorful shoes, eyelet fabrics…all so fun. I adore that Cookie A. book, too. Haven’t made anything out of it yet, but I just love looking at the pretty pictures. So much eye candy.

  21. Tasha @ By gum, by golly! May 16, 2012 at 8:32 am #

Ooh la la, what a great wishlist! I agree it’s fun making wishlists. Heck who am I kidding, I like making lists period. 😉 I looove the idea of the black eyelet with the teal underneath.

Like Stacy this list is getting me into a summer mood! Of course, I’m finishing knitting a long-sleeved sweater… lol Can’t wait to see what you end up getting and make from it!

  22. Kat May 16, 2012 at 10:10 pm #

I’m a may baby too! I’m the 19th, not long to wait. 🙂
I’m now off to make a wishlist of fabric, that I’m going to buy after the 22nd of June.

    • LLADYBIRD May 17, 2012 at 12:56 pm #

May 19th! We’re practically birthday twins! Happy early birthday 🙂

  23. Sharyn May 18, 2012 at 1:30 am #

Ohhh!!! I have been eyeing that pixelated roses for a while now! It may have to make friends with the stash.

  24. Marchelle May 19, 2012 at 2:59 am #

My birthday was Wednesday! I made the only dress I’ve made to date (I just started sewing again in December). And I got this book: http://www.amazon.fr/PLAISIR-DE-TRICOTER-Collectif/dp/2812305584/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337414238&sr=8-1 from my mother in law. Huge knitting dictionary it’s AWESOME. Happy Birthday!!!!

    • Marchelle May 19, 2012 at 2:59 am #
