technically, this is still a work-in-progress, but i am too excited to wait! must share this now!
i have a dressform – she is a dritz mydouble and, eh, i’m really just not impressed with her. “adjustable” means that if you expand one part of the form, the rest will also expand. “rich plum color” means she clashes with EVERYTHING. and that “foam-backed nylon cover” for “easy pinning”? more like hard plastic that you can’t stick anything in. i mostly just use the form for hanging WIPs – it’s not really suitable for anything else, due to it’s limitations.
i’ve been thinking about buying a nice form, either a fabulous fit or a wolf (oooh so dreamy), but they’re both way the eff out of my budget and i’m impatient/saving up for something else. instead, i hit compromise & bought myself a fabulous fit fitting system – they’re on sale right now @ amazon for $69, so yay!
i got it in the mail yesterday and started playing around with it. it’s kind of a pain in the butt to do – although much much much easier than standing there with yards of cotton batting & making my own cover, holy crap – but once i get her perfected, i should have to mess with it again (assuming i don’t gain any weight haha!). i think i spent 30 minutes *just* adjusting the chest – lots of groping & measuring & groping again. but she looks good!
enough talk, more pictures:
form front
form side – my dress form has a butt! yay!
like i said, she’s not perfect yet – i need to pad out the sides of the hips a little more – but she looks much better than when she was a little red harlot. the only complaint i have is that i wish i had bought the small kit instead of the medium kit – i went by my measurements, but i think the pads are a little big so it’s hard not to overdo it. oh, and i had to cover her arm holes because they were still that awful red. i just cut a piece of muslin & stuffed it in there. nothing fancy here!
the last thing i want to do is make a little pincushion & glue it to the top of the neck, so i can keep pins there!
speaking of pins, here is the best part about the new improved dolly:
you can stick pins into the padding!
anyone else tried this kit?
what kind of dressform do you have?
My dress form is a super old one from the 60’s that I picked up at an estate sale. I should look up what the brand is. You can pin into the cover on it, but not into the form itself. It’s a little rusty and very creaky, but you can adjust basically every measurement imaginable. Mine has to wear a bra stuffed with fiberfill though to make her boobs big enough.
mine had a fiberfill-stuffed bra too 🙂 i always felt like such a creeper when she ended up in the background of pictures haha
Yeah, when people come over and I show them my sewing room I always feel weird about it. Like “Oh wait, you weren’t planning on seeing an old, sort of stained bra showing off the size of my boobs?….Sorry about that.”
This is a really good idea – I haven’t seen this kit before. I don’t have a dressform, but I would really like one. I wouldn’t want to spend heaps of money on one either…. Have fun with your new dolly. 🙂
