Completed: Maritime Shorts, Straight Outta the 80s

28 Jun

As I mentioned at the end of Me Made May, I really have been wanting to try my hand at a different shorts pattern. Not because there is anything wrong with my beloved Thurlow pattern – but I want to change it up! Try something new! So here’s my first stab at trying something new.

So, check these babies out~
Maritime Shorts

This is the Maritime Shorts pattern from Grainline Studio. I only just recently discovered these and immediately decided that I wanted to try them. I like that they are similar to the Thurlows but a little more casual – patch pockets instead of welts, no cuffs, and the detailing is a little less fussy. While I was summoning up the courage to buy these (only because I didn’t want to have to assemble the PDF, ha!), Carla contacted me and asked if I would like the pattern as a gift. Yep, same Carla who also gifted me the pattern for those glorious culottes. So not only is she a sewing saint of gifted patterns, but she can also read my mind. AMAZING.

Also, just for the record – taping this pattern together was not difficult. I was surprised at how smoothly it went, actually!

Maritime Shorts

Putting this pattern together was interesting. I’ve slapped the Thurlows together more times than I even want to count right now, so much that I really think I could assemble a pair in my sleep. Jen’s instructions for these is totally different though! Not in a bad way, however, I did have to pry myself away from what I thought was ~the right way~ and let myself at the mercy of the instructions. Turned out ok in the end, though, as you can see!

Maritime Shorts

The only thing I didn’t like about the instructions was inserting the front fly. I don’t know, maybe I’m just stuck way too much up my own Thurlow ass, but I found them a bit confusing. Fortunately, Jen has a whole tutorial on assembling these shorts, from beginning to end, and that includes inserting the zipper! So that helped. I do think that in the future, however, I’ll probably go with the Thurlow instructions just because they make more sense to me.

Maritime Shorts

I wasn’t sure what size to make, since I usually base mine off the finished measurements. In the end, I decided to go with my actual measurements and cut the size 2. The shorts were a little big at the sides, but I was able to pinch those in nbd. However, the back gaped a LOT at the waist. This was super easy to fix – I just pinched out the excess and stitched a new CB line before putting on my waistband. Easy!

Maritime Shorts

But hey, it’s fixed! And I managed to avoid mount crackatoa in the process! TAKE THAT.

Maritime Shorts

Oh, so, now let’s talk about the fabric I used!

Maritime Shorts

It is awesome, yeah? I’ve actually been hoarding this for over a year… it was a gift from Sonja during the 2012 Summer Sewing Swap. I could never figure out what exactly to make with it, but I knew a good fabric when I saw it, so I hoarded and waited patiently. I’m happy to say, it totally paid off! This fabric looks perfect as shorts.

I’m tempted to use the rest (assuming I have enough – I haven’t measured my remaining yardage) to make a matching Victoria Blazer, like the most amazing summer power suit you ever did see.

Maritime Shorts

The only change I made to the pattern was to swap out the hook & eye closure for a button. I did originally sew on the hook & eye, but it was pulling the waistband really weird, so I decided to do the button instead. I think the pulling is actually because all the stress is on that ONE closure, so next time I will extend the back of the waistband to be long enough where there can be a second button the inside, as with my Thurlows. Just a personal preference!

Maritime Shorts

I’m also a little bummed about my topstitching choice. Wish I’d gone with a darker thread. Oh well!

Maritime Shorts

The pockets are lined with a super soft purple voile I had in my stash. With such a loud outside fabric, I wanted to keep the inside plain!

Maritime Shorts

And because you guys love inside shots as much as I do, here are some pretty serged seams for ya.

Finally, this is what happens when I get bored with taking pictures of myself:

If you’ve been hesitant to buy the Thurlow pattern because you’re not as curvy as the pattern is drafted for, this is a GREAT alternative. You could even follow the Thurlow Sew-Along for extra hand-holding, since the construction is mostly the same.

Maritime Shorts

Psst! That’s one of my white tshirts I made with fabric from Organic Cotton Plus. I just wanted y’all to know that I am wearing a BLACK bra underneath it in these pictures. Pretty cool, huh?

Also, I have a few updates that need to be mentioned:
– I don’t know if I have any local readers on this blog (well – I know there’s at least one because I met you the other day! 🙂 Hi, Beth! haha!), but I am going to be teaching sewing classes with a local dressmaker 😀 We are still nailing down details, but it will be a small, open-workshop class where people bring in what they want to sew (so you don’t get stuck sewing something you have no interest in ever wearing) where we will be on hand to demonstrate techniques and answer any and all questions. Classes will be on Tuesdays, last 2 hours, and will start in August. If you are interested in attending the class, please email me at lladybirdlauren at gmail dot com. If the days don’t work for you, we may be able to offer a different class day. Right now I’m just trying to figure out if there is an interest 🙂 So, please, let me know! Teaching sewing has been a longtime goal of mine and I’d love to see it actually happen this year 🙂
– Theodore has now gone to his new home, and I MISS HIM, but I’m also very pleased that he is in such wonderful hands! Thanks everyone for your support and comments. He’s a little stinker (literally – he stepped in his shit every single morning, and got an emergency bath every single morning as well), but he’s a CUTE little stinker! He is now with my brother and sister-in-law, which means I should still see him from time to time 🙂
– My other little brother, Matt, won’t be going to England this summer! So sorry to everyone who offered to show him around 😦 He actually made it across the ocean, but when they asked him for his work visa and he didn’t have one (he told customs he was there for an internship, even though “internship” really meant he was fixing this place’s website in exchange for a free place to stay), they put him in a holding cell for 22 hours and then shipped him home. I’d say poor Matt, except he’s now planning a road trip around the US and some parts of Canada, so I’m actually quite jealous. Ha!
– I finally stepped up and got my own domain! You can now find my site at WWW.LLADYBIRD.COM. No need to update all your readers and whatnot – the wordpress.com site should redirect to the main domain. If it doesn’t, do let me know! GOD, THIS IS ALL SO EXCITING.
– As most of you should be aware by now, Google Reader is dying a tragic death come Monday, 7/1. If you haven’t already started moving your blogs to a different reader, better hurry up! You can follow me here on Bloglovin.

WHEW that was a big ol’ wall of text! If you managed to read through all that – yay! Your consolation prize is another kitten picture:
Untitled

If that’s not enough, Here is a little video of him playing with his feet. I DIE.

Have a great weekend, everyone! Don’t forget to sign up for the Fashion A-Z Giveaway if you haven’t already done so – it closes on Monday!

Great shorts! The pattern does have quite small pieces, so i could probably manage the taping together. I hate taping patterns togheter. I just wish pdf patterns could be available in copyshop formats so i wouldnt have to tape everything together! End of the rant, sorry! back to the shorts: i need shorts! i try to convince myself i live in dresses all summer, but that is just not true, so i need to get myself toghether an make some shorts. i have the thurlow pattern, so maybe i’ll start there, but these are really cute, too. and you are killing me with the cuteness of this cat!

  2. artgirlrachel June 28, 2013 at 9:53 am #

THOSE ARE AWESOME! I love love love that print for a summer short! Now excuse me while I run out immediately and make a pair….

Also, congrats on your domain name! And thanks for the kitten pic!

  3. Mary Elizabeth June 28, 2013 at 10:37 am #

Yeah, I had to do the same thing with the back of my Maritime shorts. It’s not a big alteration and the fit is fantastic now. Yours look great!

  4. Kerry June 28, 2013 at 10:37 am #

Fantastic! But please make the matching blazer, that would be awesome. I love seeing what people have made with things they got in the swap this year and last year, so nice to know fabric is being used and loved. Will keep the pattern in mind cos I love Sewaholic but am not curvy enough for the trousers I think.

  5. ShanniLoves June 28, 2013 at 10:43 am #

Oh my god I fucking love that cat! Promise to take pictures when you go visit. I’m loving those shorts as well. Did you find them faster to make then the thurlows or do they take about the same time? The welt pockets seem to eat up so much of my time cuz it has to be perfect!

    • LLADYBIRD June 28, 2013 at 10:47 am #

I think they take about the same amount of time, maybe a liiiiitle bit less because of the lack of welt pockets and single closure at the waistband. I also don’t spend a lot of time on my welts (I’ve made them soo much, it’s kind of a reflex to sew them at this point, haha), but if you find that sewing those is a big time-suck, then the patch pockets definitely go in faster.

And yes! More kitten pictures when I see him, most definitely 😀

  6. gingermakes June 28, 2013 at 10:47 am #

These are so cute! Love the fabric as shorts! I have this pattern taped up and ready to go, but I haven’t been able to commit to a fabric… hmm…

Really hoping you make a matching blazer because OBVIOUSLY that’s just the right thing to do!

  7. lisa g June 28, 2013 at 11:36 am #

ooh love the fabric! i’ve been on a grainline kick lately and i’m super in love with everything i’ve made so far (3 archers plus 1 on the table and 2 moss mini’s). haven’t gone for the shorts yet cuz i can easily draft other styles from my fitting thurlows and i’m pretty stuck in my ways! oh, and matching blazer? yeeessss!!!

  8. Kelly June 28, 2013 at 11:51 am #

The fabric is perfect and they are really cute on you! I want to make these with the curved hem variation she has on her site. Lots of exciting news for you, congrats! If I lived there I would totally come take classes from you.

  9. Claire (aka Seemane) June 28, 2013 at 11:52 am #

Is is me… is 2013 the year of the shorts for ya 😉 – and it should be illegal to look that good in them too (hehe!) ?

P.S. For anyone to follow your blog on Feedly they can use this link Click here to follow Lladybird.com on Feedly 🙂

I did a post on my blog listing a bunch of other reader options too…

    • LLADYBIRD June 28, 2013 at 12:40 pm #

Ah, thank you for posting this! I’ve been using Feedly myself, but Bloglovin seems to be the most popular option.

  10. lucysb June 28, 2013 at 12:01 pm #

I love these! It’s given me a great idea for some fabric I have in my stash!

  11. Ashley June 28, 2013 at 12:22 pm #

I love your shorts and you are right, that fabric is awesome! From farther away I thought it was an ikat. Did you take any length off the shorts? They look great on you and your legs but would be a bit short for me.

    • LLADYBIRD June 28, 2013 at 12:41 pm #

I did hem them slightly shorter than the pattern, but not by much (like a 1″ hem instead of 1/2″). If you require them to be longer, definitely add length before you cut your fabric!

  12. Fiona June 28, 2013 at 12:33 pm #

A matching Victoria Blazer would be the BEST THING EVER
Well apart from Theodore of course

    • lucysb June 28, 2013 at 3:23 pm #

That is an awesome idea… Definitely a Victoria blaser!

  13. IngeMaakt June 28, 2013 at 12:36 pm #

Lovely shorts! The fabric is perfect for them. And indeed, make the jacket, it will look so fabulous as a suit!

  14. Kim June 28, 2013 at 1:34 pm #

I love your shorts and the fabric too! I’m working on a pair of Maritime shorts right now, I just cut out all my pieces and hope to finish them tomorrow.
Thanks for all the construction tips and I’m very happy Theodore found a loving home, he looks sooo cute!

  15. Trisha June 28, 2013 at 2:35 pm #

Mmmm! That fabric is the best!

I’ve been thinking about getting my own domain. Where did you go through to get yours? Would love details!

    • LLADYBIRD June 28, 2013 at 2:44 pm #

My friend Alex actually set it all up for me, so I’m honestly not really sure (can you tell internet-stuff is not my strong point? Look at my blog layout 😛 hahahaha). However, I was talking to Rochelle about it earlier this week and she recommended buying through namecheap.com 🙂

      • Trisha June 28, 2013 at 4:33 pm #

Thanks for the reply! I hadn’t heard of namecheap, so I’ll have to check them out.

  16. carlalissa June 28, 2013 at 3:53 pm #

Oh my dear Lauren, I am so glad the pattern went so well teehee 😉 And thank you very much for the review! XOXO

  17. dizzidays June 28, 2013 at 4:21 pm #

Those shorts are just too cute! All the very best of luck with your sewing classes, I think you will be a fantastic sewing teacher – wish Brisbane was just “around the corner” then I could come join the fun!

  18. Stephanie | Mabel Makes June 28, 2013 at 5:53 pm #

Cute shorts – I love the fabric choice! I really like grainline studio patterns because they have really clean lines and casual style but I too have found the instructions a little confusing at times. I haven’t made the maritime shorts yet but on other patterns at least. Maybe I’ve been too spoiled with other pattern makers 🙂

  19. Carolyn June 28, 2013 at 7:45 pm #

I think a jacket with those shorts would be awesome…hope you have enough fabric to make it happen!

  20. Lori June 28, 2013 at 8:27 pm #

Super cute shorts and as always you look great in your new creation. I will have to check out that white knit, I hate RTW shirts they are just so see-through. I love the Victoria blazer, too, after vacation that will be on my to-do list.

  21. Alana B June 29, 2013 at 2:26 am #

    Cutie Patootie!

  22. Shelly June 29, 2013 at 3:42 am #

Another fabulous pair of shorts! I absolutely love the fabric you used. You were right to hang onto it till the right project came along. A Victoria Blazer too, now that would be one awesome power suit!! 🙂

  23. sallie June 29, 2013 at 9:43 am #

GAAAHHHH!!! Everywhere I look that kitteh is killing me with his laserbeam cuteness!!! Just kidding. Love cute cat pictures… duh. I’ve been meaning to make the Maritime shorts this summer too. I just think they look pretty classic, and I’ve found that Jen’s patterns fit me really well (I’m not particularly curvy on the bottom, much to my chagrin…) These are KILLER in that crazy print! Love them!! And I’m dying to see them paired with the Victoria blazer… summer power suit 4eva!

  24. Melissa S. June 29, 2013 at 11:22 am #

Sewing classes nooooooo!!! I’m so close but not quite close enough. I’m in Chattanooga, so it’s not something I could drive up for every week. Maybe you could consider a special all-day workshop sometime for those of us who are in the region?

    • LLADYBIRD July 1, 2013 at 1:43 pm #

I would TOTALLY consider that, let me talk to my second teaching half about it and we’ll see if it’s doable 🙂

  25. Anonymous June 30, 2013 at 5:55 am #

You crack me up. Maybe on your new site you could add a Glossary of Terms…?? I’m a new reader & new sewer… And much older than you so am not up on all the blog lingo. I’d hate to miss an anticdote! Wish I could take your class- wont work from California 😦

    • LLADYBIRD July 1, 2013 at 1:45 pm #

Honestly, I probably won’t be able to add any sort of glossary because I just don’t have the time to manage putting together something like that (considering I don’t update half my pages or Twitter… ughhh hahahahaha). HOWEVER, I do try to define terms as they come up in posts, and of course if you ever hear/read me say something you don’t know what I’m talking about – ask! I’m more than happy to elaborate on, well, anything to do with sewing! You can comment, or email me, or whatever 🙂 No stupid questions here 🙂

  26. Trish June 30, 2013 at 10:14 am #

Cute! And ouch about your bro. I meant to ask you how his trip was going when I saw you yesterday. Your trip to London will go better. 🙂

    • LLADYBIRD July 1, 2013 at 1:46 pm #

Damn straight mine is gonna be better 😀 haha!

  27. Heather Lou June 30, 2013 at 10:36 am #

If you weren’t 6 sizes smaller than me I would fly to Nashville and steal those shorts. That pattern is THE JAM. I’m totes on the same wavelength – making some highwaisted vintage shorts shortly (ha) but I will definitely try the Grainline if they turn out gnarly. Also I’m making t-shirts all day using your knit tricks since I have NO FREAKING TOPS. The curse of a dress lover.

  28. daiyami June 30, 2013 at 10:39 am #

Awesome about the teaching! I never comment because the systems never let me login, but I really want to share my experience. I feel like that type of open-project workshop was critical in me learning and continuing to sew, and I wish more places did something similar. My local fabric/machine store (since closed) ran an evening workshop once a week from 6-9pm, that was a mix of formal class and project time. My teacher did a Sew Fundamentals class that walked a complete novice through the Bernina Seams-Inside-Out bag, which taught a lot of basic techniques (the teacher assembled the kit beforehand, the student just needed to bring a few supplies, mainly pins and scissors). At the same time, other people were there working on their projects, so there was a lot of camaraderie and “yay, good for you learning to sew!” It was limited to 6-8, so you had to call that day to reserve a space/machine, but it was arranged in a circle so very much a feel of being in a group. The workshop price was very reasonable (the class was a bit more), so a lot of women came just for the company or not being interrupted at home, plus a discount on things bought during the class encouraged me to make some purchases.

So once I had learned the basics, I had a space where I could return, borrow a machine, work on a project with guidance (I did pillowcase, refashioned a skirt, made a couple of skirts), and see if I wanted to keep sewing before investing in a machine myself. I could also see what more advanced people were working on. It was also something that I could very easily recommend to friends who expressed a casual interest in sewing–“hey, come with me to this workshop–you can do the zipper bag, I’ll lend you the pins, scissors, etc, and be there for company.”

I think without that nurturing space where I could develop at my own pace and in my own style, I’m not sure I would have turned into the serious hobbyist that I am today, and I definitely became a small customer of the fabric store, though I didn’t buy my machine there.

    • LLADYBIRD July 1, 2013 at 1:47 pm #

Thank you for sharing this comment! Seriously, I’ve read it like 5 times since it posted haha 🙂 Your experience is EXACTLY the kind of experience I want to offer, so I’m so glad it was a positive one!

  29. Gjeometry June 30, 2013 at 5:50 pm #

I passed out momentarily from the kitten pics! The shorts are very cute! and, thanks for the tip about taking in back excess, that’s exactly the problem with pants I am making. Not too bad at the front, but the back gaps 2 inches or more!!! And, congrats on teaching your own sewing class!!

  30. House of Pinheiro July 1, 2013 at 4:11 am #

I was eyeing this pattern yesterday.. I need a cute short… i liked your version a lot…you MUST make the matching victoria blazer.

  31. Anonymous July 1, 2013 at 8:12 am #

Yay. I’m late to the comment game, as I’m in my own special hell of work, editors, and life. But, as much as I like your version I think I’ll stick with my thurlows. 😉 Though, I’ve been told that if I make another pair of shorts this season my friends might call an intervention.

Also, I have curves, and I keep lurking this pattern and noting that I’d need to redraft to adjust for my body. Yea, I can be lazy sometimes.

  32. Michelle July 2, 2013 at 10:44 am #

Your shorts are wonderful! I purchased the maritime pattern months ago and haven’t mustered the courage to try it yet.

  33. Claudia July 5, 2013 at 11:28 pm #

Thank you for the thorough review! I’d been contemplating between these and Thurlows and you definitely helped me decide (I’m going with these).

  34. Becca July 7, 2013 at 12:38 pm #

These are so cute! Thanks for the great information about the pattern adjustments you had to make. You totally have to make that blazer with the remaining material!

  35. Sarah Sew Love July 10, 2013 at 5:12 am #

Hello Lladybird..I see I am the 45th comment hooraH! I wonder if you would even get to read this hehe but wanted to say I love love your shorts and love love the idea of adding the blazer combo. Im thinking of doing the same to match my peter & the wolf pants I just made. woop woop for funky patterned power suits hehe. peace!

    • LLADYBIRD July 10, 2013 at 8:58 am #

Haha, of course I read it! 🙂 Thank you! Now off to lurk your Peter & The Wolf pants… 😀

  36. missjoiedevivre July 17, 2013 at 10:16 pm #

Once again, a gorgeous set of shorts, almost overshadowed by an adorable kitten. And awesome news on the teaching front – you’ll be amazing and I’m so jealous of the folk who’ll get to go! A bit far for me…

  37. mrsgarlichead June 6, 2014 at 12:40 am #

I am working on a pair of Maritime shorts right now and realized after finishing the front with zipper and all that I also have some issues with gaping in the back – and am now reassured that I can fix this easily by taking in the cb seam. So thank you for this! I might have to invest in thurlow pants now that I know they are made for the pear shaped woman.
