Completed: Birthday Tania Culottes

24 Jun

I never thought I would say this… but… YAY CULOTTES!!!

Tania Culottes

These culottes come courtesy of not one, but TWO awesome birthday gifts I got back in May.

Tania Culottes

I used Megan Nielsen’s Tania Culottes pattern to make these bad boys up. The pattern was a gift from reader Carla (she doesn’t have a blog yet, but there’s her Instagram!). I had to wait first because this pattern is wildly popular – it was sold out, and it appears to be sold out again, ha! – but I like to think it was worth the wait. This is such a fabulous little pattern, it’s very easy, but it sure doesn’t look it!

Tania Culottes

I cut the size XS, keeping the length also on the XS. The length should really look more like a mini, but on my short lil’ legs it’s *almost* appropriate for work (I say almost, but not quite :P). This pattern was seriously fast to make – I breezed through it in a couple of hours.

Tania Culottes

The engineering on this pattern is SO COOL. It actually looks like I’m wearing a floaty little circle skirt…

Tania Culottes

… but they are indeed culottes! With a crotch seam and everything!

Tania Culottes

One thing I will mention that was not written in the instructions is that you reeeeeally need to let this sucker hang for 24 hours before you hem. Since the skirt is a circle (or half circle, or whatever, I can never tell with these things!), the bias along the hem leads for some crazy settling. I had to cut quite a bit off to get it even, and still it’s not exactly perfect. Better, but not perfect.

Tania Culottes

I think the fabric is what really makes these, though. Isn’t it lovely? THAT was a gift from Kristi, a giftcard to Mood, which I immediately used to buy me some of that Thakoon cotton everyone is raving over. And, you know, after handling this fabric during the making (and wearing!) of my culottes, I gotta say… the rave reviews are there for a reason. This stuff is AWESOME. It is the silkiest, softest cotton (my mom was shocked when I told her it was just 100% cotton… and she’s a seamstress, too! She knows her fabrics!), but it’s not slinky to handle at all. It presses well and while it’s lightweight/sheer-ish, it’s opaque enough to not need a lining. I kind of wish I’d bought several yards of the stuff. I may anyway, when I get my next Mood allowance.

Tania Culottes

Srsly, I wish I could cut a little swatch to send to each of you! It is THAT amazing!

Tania Culottes

I didn’t bother to match the stripes on the CF or CB seams, but I don’t think it’s really noticeable? The folds in the circle skirt do a good job of hiding that, ha.

Tania Culottes

Anyway, I looove my new culottes! I cannot wait to try these out while riding my bike. Gonna feel like a floaty cycling goddess, y’all. Again, thank you SO SO SO MUCH, Carla and Kristi, for making my culotte dreamz come true~~

Now, on a totally unrelated note, let’s have a cat story!!

Untitled
(I know, the side of my house looks SUPER white trash, bear with me here…)
On Friday, I hear this awful/scared mewing from outside the house. I looked out the back door and there was a tiny kitten on the porch! He ran when he saw me. All that night, I could hear him but I couldn’t figure out where he was hiding, until I realized there was a tiny hole in the crawl space under the house (this picture was taken after I pulled out all the bricks in the crawl space, fyi!).

Untitled

I eventually caught him when I brought Amelia outside. He just ran straight to her! (Amelia, on the other hand, wants NOTHING to do with him. Bitch.) We brought him inside, gave him 3 baths (he was covered in fleas, poor thing!) and he seems pretty happy now. He gets really scared if you leave the room and he can’t see you, but I try to carry him around with me because I don’t want him interacting with Amelia until I know for sure whether or not he has any kitty-diseases. She’s vaccinated and on flea/tick/worm meds, but still. You never know!

Untitled
Untitled
Untitled

So now I have this kitten. I have no idea how old he is – he seems really young, though. We’ve been calling him Theodore.

Untitled
Untitled

I wish I could keep him, but I can’t afford the bills & additional pet deposit that he would cost me – not to mention, Amelia is REALLY unhappy about sharing her space with another animal. Fortunately, I think my brother & sister-in-law are going to adopt him 🙂 She’s taking him to the vet right now to make sure everything checks out, and I may hang onto him for a week or so until they move into their new house. Fingers crossed that everything works out! He’s super sweet and cuddly.

Untitled

Here we are trying to take a picture this morning. As you can see, Theodore wasn’t feelin’ it 😉

Ahahahaa . Really sweet this poor baby Theo! Am I wrong or cats are very much loved ny sewists? I adore them, but will have to wait until I don´t share flat anymore. Nice culottes and so comfortable they are!!!

  3. Leila June 24, 2013 at 10:34 am #

Love the culottes and I seriously posted the same pic of me in my culottes pulling them apart cos y’know, you have to show that they’re culottes! http://ow.ly/mkAdQ cute kitten, too.

    • LLADYBIRD June 24, 2013 at 10:35 am #

HAHA your picture is better than mine, dammit! 😀

  4. designcloseup June 24, 2013 at 10:36 am #

Really love the patterned fabric you’ve used! I have a very similar one in a kimono vintage cotton/silk fabric and I’m yet to decide what to do with it

I’m amazed that you can make culottes look that cute!!

    • LLADYBIRD June 24, 2013 at 10:38 am #

I’m amazed that you Megan Nielsen can make culottes look that cute!!

Fixed it for ya 😛 Haha!!
      But serioulsy – thank you!

      • tworandomwords June 25, 2013 at 2:13 am #

I’m not sure why everyone has such a bias against culottes – I have always loved them (especially as a bigger teenager – looks like a skirt but with no thigh chafing!!). I’m feeling a bit like a hipster with all this love being thrown at them now but, once I make up a pair (I do have one or two vintage patterns so I’ll see if I need a new one) noone in IRL will know that I’m copying the trend.

  6. lisa g June 24, 2013 at 10:41 am #

all the super cute culottes are making me question everything i’ve ever believed in life… don’t know if i’ll get the pattern, but you guys are making them look so amazing! such an adorable kitty, hope he checks out okay!

  7. dandeliondrift June 24, 2013 at 11:02 am #

I agree with Lisa. Culottes are not supposed to look so good….these are amazing and really make me want to buy Megan’s pattern!

  8. sarah June 24, 2013 at 11:02 am #

I love these culottes, they are just so cute and convincing as a skirt! they look great on you too!
Hope everything turns out well for the kitty, he is so adorable!!

  9. carlalissa June 24, 2013 at 11:02 am #

I am so glad the culottes worked fine…..enjoy! 🙂

  10. lakaribane June 24, 2013 at 11:03 am #

Sorry, cannot comment on the culottes because I am in love with Theodore The Cute.

  11. Rebecca June 24, 2013 at 11:11 am #

That kitten is so freaking cute! I wouldn’t be able to give him up! My cat was wary of my new kitten at first and now they’re best friends that snuggle together.

    And I love that fabric!

  12. Wendy June 24, 2013 at 11:28 am #

Lucky kitty! i am glad he will be adopted . Wonder how he ever got in that space to begin with ????

  13. maddie June 24, 2013 at 11:28 am #

Culottes, don’t you think they’re kind of an outdated silhouette? If so, you’re totally bringing them back. I love your versions. Isn’t it amazing how nicely a project comes together when the fabric cooperates!

  14. Rochelle New June 24, 2013 at 11:57 am #

Theodore is so freaking cute that I seriously forgot this originally was a blog post about a sewing project lol. You need to make him a pair of culottes 😉 Hope everything checks out so he can have a new home soon!

  15. craftyland June 24, 2013 at 11:58 am #

Love those culottes! Really adorable. And Theo – darling baby. My sweetie lays down like that too. So funny!

  16. Kaoru June 24, 2013 at 12:04 pm #

You make culottes look so good!

By the way, that kitty is utterly adorable. He looks just like my little guy when we first adopted him: Big ol’ ears on such a tiny body! We think he’s at least part bengal, and if that’s the case for this kitty, be prepared for absolute craziness! But they can also be super sweet and cuddly (mine drools when he’s really happy!).

  17. ShanniLoves June 24, 2013 at 12:19 pm #

Love the Culottes and Theodore is so precious!! Glad you found him a new home. We had a stray show up at our house and took him in. We live out in the country so that seems to happen a lot. Unfortunately our other 3 cats aren’t too fond of him (yes that’s right 3, our house is one gigantic furball). He’s mostly an outside cat so they will just have to deal.

  18. strugglesome June 24, 2013 at 12:27 pm #

Damn, these are cute. I’m so not a culottes person but boy if you don’t make these look attractive….poor Theodore! I share your pain, we’ve had a kitten staying with us for a week and while she was SO cute Cadfael, my cat, was NOT HAVING IT.

  19. Librarian Tells All June 24, 2013 at 12:30 pm #

I can’t decide what I like better: The culottes masquerading as a floaty skirt, or the hilarious angry kitten pic. What a cutie! Haha, I bet Amelia is going NUTS right now. :-p

  20. gingermakes June 24, 2013 at 12:33 pm #

Well, aren’t these adorable?! Love ’em on you! And Theodore is ridiculously cute– love the Instagram pic with all his little teefs showing!

  21. Lori June 24, 2013 at 12:33 pm #

Cute culotes, I would of never guessed that. I have that fabric and you are so right, the fabric is marvelous.

  22. niekemieke June 24, 2013 at 12:42 pm #

Too bad I live on the other side of the Atlantic otherwise I would be happy to adopt Theodore (if your sister wouldn’t want him) We’ve been meaning to get a new kitten as my cat always had a sister and is now feeling really sad. Theodore looks like a tiny version of mine 🙂

But love the culottes as well, I bought the pattern the minute it came out but I haven’t gotten round to it yet, mainly because I’m in doubt about the length I need to add. I’m a tiny person as well, so if you don’t mind me asking how tall are you, might give me a better idea of how much I need to add the get the length appropriate 🙂

    • LLADYBIRD June 24, 2013 at 12:50 pm #

Sure! I’m a little under 5’3″, if that helps 🙂

      • niekemieke June 24, 2013 at 12:54 pm #

We’re exactly the same height! Yay, which tells me to add 15-20 cm to the XS length! (I wish I had XS size as well, hehe) Thanks a lot!!

  23. Sabs June 24, 2013 at 12:55 pm #

I heart Theodore! Post him to me and I’ll look after him!

  24. rachelinred June 24, 2013 at 1:11 pm #

Who knew Culottes could be so flattering and feminine and fun? yay! Now I want one too! 🙂

  25. Rosie June 24, 2013 at 1:41 pm #

Love the culottes but Theodore is so precious / adorable. He looks quiet at home despite Amelia’s attitude. He’s already doing the froggy pose. I hope your brother / sister-in-law will be able to take him.

  26. Sew Sleepy June 24, 2013 at 1:42 pm #

cute pattern hadn’t seen that one. will need to add it to my ever-growing list of makes.

  27. Tasha @ By gum, by golly! June 24, 2013 at 1:57 pm #

He is seriously a little doll! I’m glad your brother/SIL are adopting him, yay!

Those culottes are really cute! I’m always on the hunt for great cottons but there aren’t very many prints, boo hiss. I’ll keep my eye out for more in the future!

  28. puu June 24, 2013 at 2:37 pm #

how is it possible that you always have just finished exactly what is next on my cutting table?! HOW, WOMAN?!?!? love the tanias and the baby kitty. my cat would feel the same way about an interloper, but i’d be major tempted…

    • LLADYBIRD June 24, 2013 at 2:40 pm #

I honestly cannot imagine your cat being anything less than perfect. He is so so amazing haha.

  29. misscrayolacreepy June 24, 2013 at 2:39 pm #

Adorable kitten + cute culottes = Lauren FTW!

  30. Jo June 24, 2013 at 3:16 pm #

So pretty! That cotton sounds like a dream too. Culottes are a perv’s nightmare lol. And bonus points for cute cat photos haha 🙂

  31. Kelly June 24, 2013 at 3:22 pm #

Oooh, pretty pretty! If I wasn’t banned from buying fabric right now I would be all over that cotton, it sounds amazing! I once found a little kitten in a wall- we heard meowing and found him in a hole that had boards nailed over it (it was a super old apartment building). Totally crazy, but it turned out he belonged to a neighbor and got in the wall through a hole under their kitchen sink! Theodore is adorable, glad you found a home for him 🙂

  32. Stephanie | Mabel Makes June 24, 2013 at 3:55 pm #

Your culottes are fab! I have this pattern and hope to get some finished before the summer is out. I love everything from this collection that Megan put out! Such great ideas and details. The kitten is just too cute!

  33. Heather Lou June 24, 2013 at 3:56 pm #

I just got this patter in the mail and am deliberating over what fabric to use…. I want that fucking cotton dude. Nothing I have at home is really doing it for me. They look so comfy and summery and perfect for the damn humidity in Montreal.

and that kittehhhhhhh!!! Oh I want to eat him up. I’m happy you’re finidng him a good home, and impressed with your baility to not keep him forever and ever and ever,

    • LLADYBIRD June 25, 2013 at 8:48 am #

TREAT YO’SELF. You deserve that fucking cotton!

  34. Lucy June 24, 2013 at 4:02 pm #

Haha, the kitten totally upstaged your project. I was reading it and going, oh that’s cool, then the kitten made me go squee and I completely forgot everything. Then culottes were mentioned in the first comment and I went, oh yeah.

Looking at him I’d say he’d be 6-8 weeks old, no more than that. What a cutie! I wonder where he came from?

  35. Elena June 24, 2013 at 4:18 pm #

Oh, Theodore is just precious! And I love your Tanias too! I had the same hemming problem with mine, and I’m pretty sure they’re still uneven, but at some point you’ve just got to let it go, right?

  36. Sarah W. June 24, 2013 at 5:10 pm #

Please give us a kitty update in the future–he’s so cute! (But I can’t take him.)

Tania culottes are the best culottes I’ve ever seen! Amazing.

  37. Marie June 24, 2013 at 5:34 pm #

Yum! Your culottes are scrummy…they look just like a cheeky, little circle skirt! And how cute is Theodore!?!

  38. thecuriouskiwi June 24, 2013 at 5:50 pm #

I can’t decide which is more sweet, your culottes or Theodore?! I am kitten mad right now so Theodore wins, sorry not sorry but my kitty is 3 months and I still remember when we got her at 6 weeks and she was only 600 grams, slightly smaller than Theodore, she was the runt! Haha, but the littler the better!

However our culottes definitely make me want to try them, I always thought of culottes as a bit Nana-spec but not this pattern! Perfect for bicycle riding and windy Wellington weather 🙂

  39. redambition June 24, 2013 at 5:54 pm #

ERMAGERD Theodore is SO CUUUUUUUTE! HE is utterly adorable, and I hope your brother and sister in law are able to adopt him!

Your culottes are also freaking awesome! I can’t wait til the weather warms up here (Australia) so I have an excuse to make a pair.

  40. aem2 June 24, 2013 at 6:51 pm #

My deeply ingrained anti-culotte prejudices are being dealt body blows by your and other bloggers’ versions. They are really cute and not culotty at all. I’m finding myself thinking they would even be good for swing dancing… do they twirl?

And Theodore is such a cutie! That last pic is adorable. He looks like he’s belting out a song.

  41. K-Line June 24, 2013 at 7:39 pm #

Those fit you perfectly. I love them!

  42. Sarah June 24, 2013 at 11:35 pm #

Holy crap, that is the cutest kitten I’ve seen all day! (and the culottes are very nice :)).

  43. Yana June 25, 2013 at 1:52 am #

They are super cute! I have a vintage pattern for culottes, might see if they are as good as MN pattern. And the fabric sounds very nice too. If only they sold it in Australia 🙂

  44. Cameron June 25, 2013 at 6:50 am #

Love the culottes, but Theodore stole my heart!

  45. Bec Stitches June 25, 2013 at 7:45 am #

Bahhaa check his face, little darlin:)
The fabric even looks soft and all gorgy like

  46. thesecretlifeofseams June 25, 2013 at 8:02 am #

Adorable culottes and a kitten. All you need in life 🙂

  47. megannielsen June 25, 2013 at 8:31 am #

Lauren!! oh my goodness! i am so thrilled that you like your Tania’s so much! yay!!! They look so super cute on you – and yep, i have serious fabric envy!! and i love love that you paired them with your cropped Briar!!

But i must admit, i think Theodore steals this post 🙂 what a cutie! i hope that his vet visit goes well so he can go to his new home!!

    xoxo

  48. Jennifer June 25, 2013 at 9:02 am #

What a cute little kitty. I hope all goes well with him.

  49. Katie June 25, 2013 at 9:33 am #

Yay indeed! I’ve made two pairs of Tanias now and I love them. I especially like the fabric of yours, the drape make it look particularly skirt-y.

And oh god, what an adorable little kitty and good on you for saving him and finding him a home.

  50. lm2hyd June 25, 2013 at 10:08 am #

That last photo is hilarious! Perfect timing 🙂

  51. Gjeometry June 25, 2013 at 3:37 pm #

I love the Tania Culottes and, actually Culottes in general. Even the “not cool” ones from the 1970s. These look great on you! And, that kitten. Oh gracious me he is ADORABLE!!! He’s also quite feisty, I can see! I’m SO happy your relatives are adopting him. He looks like a Theodore, as well. Kitty says to say ‘meow’ to him.

  52. crystalpleats June 26, 2013 at 12:26 am #

Your culottes are gorgeous. I love that fabric just as much as everyone else!

  53. Sarah June 26, 2013 at 5:56 am #

Oh CUTE culottes 🙂 they really do look just like a skirt. But I have to say that that kitten is the CUTEST espesh that screaming shot of the wee fella on your shoulder (I saw it on instagram and loved it) super cute lil theo

  54. Thea June 26, 2013 at 4:34 pm #

I love the culottes, but I have to say, I love the kitty even more – thanks for sharing! 🙂 and thanks for the pic today, too, hehe!

  55. milenasews June 26, 2013 at 8:24 pm #

What an adorable kitten! And that fabric is really nice, I’ll swing by Mood NYC this weekend to see for myself.

  56. sallie June 29, 2013 at 9:47 am #

Did I comment on this yet?? If not, that is a serious overlook on my part – because these tania culottes are THE SHIT!! Seriously my favorites I’ve ever seen! Oh yes! I remember now – first time I read it I immediately followed the link to Mood to eyeball that magnificent fabric. Love it! Soo good. Great pairing of pattern and fabric! Also, when I saw all those little kitty pictures I literally gasped “ohmygodi’mdying!” at my computer. Lil kitty. So stinking cute.

  57. Rosalia July 6, 2013 at 1:57 pm #

Love, love the culottes! I am trying to find a local pattern and no one seems to carry it, where did you get yours? I definitely need to make me some culottes, they are the bomb!!!

  58. missjoiedevivre July 17, 2013 at 10:04 pm #

I’m not sure which to gush over the most – the amazing culottes (omg WANT) or the kitten (OMG WANT MORE). Who am I kidding – kitties win everything all the time. I am a cat-deprived crazy cat lady and Theo is absolutely adorable. Hope it works out for him and your family! And despite being distracted by the kitty goodness, the culottes are amazing too!

  59. Josie July 2, 2014 at 12:47 pm #

Two questions: Did you wear a belt with this because you needed it to hold it up or because you just wanted it for fashion? Looks cute with it but I’m not a huge fan of belts so I was curious if I was going to need one. Also, did you make the shirt you are wearing with the skirt? What pattern was it?

    • LLADYBIRD July 3, 2014 at 7:54 am #

I’m just wearing the belt for looks- it’s not holding anything up 🙂 And yes, I made the shirt – it’s the cropped version of the Briar pattern 🙂
