Thurlow Sew-Along: My Completed Thurlows!

12 Nov

Also known as “The Brown Old Man Pants I’ve Been Pining Over For The Past 10 Years” – here they are! The end result of the Thurlow Sew-Along 🙂

CIMG0081
I probably could have done a better job of getting those creases down the front leg centered better, but… nope. Idgaf right now.

CIMG0110
Shit, I forgot to tell you guys that I cut my hair!

CIMG0106
Well… I did. I should have whipped out my measuring tape & gotten a proper inch length, but we ended up cutting off something in the realm of 8″. 8″! That’s like a perfect… Jimmy John’s sub.

CIMG0119
Anyway, I’m pretty thrilled with how these fit. Just the way I like it!

CIMG0125
A good rear-view is always important.

CIMG0120
Bonus: They go perfectly with my Mustard sweater! Like a match made in Heaven or some shit.

For those of you who sewed along and have pants or almost-pants – link share, please! We all want to see (but especially me, because I am nosy as hell).

For those of you who hate pants and sew-alongs (and fun, I guess) – sorry for not being sorry! I’m back to regularly not-scheduled posting this week, though 🙂

For those of you lurking on the sidelines – just do it! Take the plunge!

FUCK IT ALL, I LOVE THESE PANTS.

love them. and i like your new shorter hair!

  2. Michelle November 12, 2012 at 10:54 am #

I love those pants, too. Are you sure you didn’t intend to create the perfect pants to coordinate with your mustard sweater, because it totally couldn’t have been a better pairing.

  3. didyoumakethat November 12, 2012 at 10:54 am #

Now, let’s get a few things straight around here. I love your pants, they’re awesome. And I love your cardigan, it’s such a cool colour. And yeah, your hairslide is cute, too. But that haircut is AMAZING!!! I love it so much. You look like you’ve walked out of an F Scott Fitzgerald novel. When I die and go to heaven, can I be you, please? I really enjoyed reading the sewalong, even though I wasn’t taking part. They’re really hard work and intense to host, so a big slap on the back to you!

    • LLADYBIRD November 12, 2012 at 12:47 pm #

Oooh F Scott, I like that reference! And I want to be you when I grow up, so maybe we can arrange some sort of swap-off 🙂

  4. punkmik November 12, 2012 at 11:00 am #

Your pants are adorbs, but WHERE DID YOU GET THE SHOES??

    • LLADYBIRD November 12, 2012 at 11:11 am #

Haha they’re actually from the thrift store! Currently, they are my favorite pair of flats I own 🙂 SO COMFY.

  7. Tasha @ By gum, by golly! November 12, 2012 at 11:21 am #

Love them!! They look awesome. And so perfect with your Agatha, I can’t even stand it! Your haircut is super cute too btw. 🙂

(And OMG Amelia looks exactly like the chubbier version of my cat from the rear.)

  8. kristinm100 November 12, 2012 at 11:22 am #

OMG – could you be more adorable!! I love the styling, the fit and the way those autumn colours go together.

  9. Dana November 12, 2012 at 11:27 am #

Your pants look amazing and your hair is so cute!!!!!

  10. Asia Al-Massari November 12, 2012 at 11:36 am #

    GURL. THEM PANTS.

  11. Bea W November 12, 2012 at 11:36 am #

I love your grandpa pants. They look great! This pattern looks really awesome. I have been making trousers and shorts from a new look pattern lately and really love them. They are super wide in the leg though. Yours look wide-ish but not too extreme. The rest if the outfit is super cute, too. Bad that short hair is perfect for you. I like it a lot.

Great pants! I love a good pair of brown old man pants. And they’re fantastic with that mustard sweater!

  13. Trisha November 12, 2012 at 11:51 am #

Altogether adorable outfit! Love it. Amelia matches, too. 🙂

  14. Sarah November 12, 2012 at 11:57 am #

Ooh, never commented on a blog before…I can’t call them pants, sorry, they are trousers! Lol! They are fabulous, & when I get a bit better at this sewing thing, I will be making some! I loved the sew along anyway! Your hair is gorgeous too. Love the blog, just found it & subscribed. Thank you! Sarah (no longer a blog commenter virgin…phew!!)

    • LLADYBIRD November 12, 2012 at 12:49 pm #

Ha! I wish we called them trousers here, but it just sounds way too fancy with my accent 😛 And yay, I feel so special that I got to be your first time haha!

  15. Heather Lou November 12, 2012 at 12:02 pm #

I know I said it on Instagram but you are so giving Audrey Horne in Twin Peaks realness with the new do, I can’t even deal. What a ridiculously flattering haircut. And those pants ain’t half-bad either. They remind me of a way better fitting version of the pants I would buy from thrift stores when I was in my grunge phase in high school. I mean that in the best way possible.

    • LLADYBIRD November 12, 2012 at 12:50 pm #

A lot of people threw out Audrey Horne! She’s a babe, though, so I don’t mind at all 🙂 I may have to start watching Twin Peaks now :B

And I know what you mean about the pants – I had a very similar pair that was also from the thrift, and I wore them to death. Unfortunately, I got too wide for them (they were from the little boy’s section), and I’ve wanted a replacement pair ever since. WHICH I NOW HAVE. YAY.

      • Scruffy Badger November 13, 2012 at 10:00 am #

Twin Peaks – must! I bet you’ll be making plaid skirts to wear with your cardis once you start watching….which only you could make look cool…I have finished an ace pair of trousers (cannot say “pants like your earlier commenter”) too, and have managed to get my “child cat” in my pics too….in a lazy moment (like most of his daylight hours). Thanks for the sewalong, it caused me much hilarity as well as bringing the instructions to life. But don’t Thurlows rock?! I cannot believe how awesome they are with no fitting. How did Tasia know my body shape so well? That’s what I want to know

        • LLADYBIRD November 13, 2012 at 10:34 am #

They really are perfect! I don’t know how Tasia is EXACTLY fitting my body with her ace patterns (I figure she must be sneaking in my house at night or something), but I will never ever complain! 🙂

  16. macstabby November 12, 2012 at 12:07 pm #

Cheezus, those are some great pants! As soon as I’ve got a bit more confidence, I’m going to make my own brown old man pants! Your haircut is too cute- I want to clone a little pygmy Lauren wearing this exact outfit and keep her in my pocket.

  17. misscrayolacreepy November 12, 2012 at 12:27 pm #

Dream pants! If I could do an emoji right now I’d give you a thumbs up!

  18. Lynne November 12, 2012 at 12:35 pm #

I LOVE these!!! These are exactly the Thurlows I am going to make (when Santa brings me “Pants For Real People”). I have a pair of shop bought trousers like these, but they have turns-ups at the bottom. In fact, now I think about it, I bought length that was too long, and made the turn-ups myself! Anyway, they’ve seen better days now, but I like to call them my Daphne Du Maurier trousers, because she is wearing similar trousers in the photo in the inside cover of my copy of Rebecca. 🙂

  19. crystalpleats November 12, 2012 at 1:10 pm #

Your Thurlows are awesome and I agree – great rear view:)! Loving the haircut, too.

  20. Simone November 12, 2012 at 2:15 pm #

You look great! Great Pants, great sweater, great hair cut, great style, great girl! 😉
    Thanks for being so inspiring!
    Best wishes from Germany,

    Simone

  21. Clarissa November 12, 2012 at 2:34 pm #

Love it!!!! These are great and so is your haircut 😀

  22. Trice November 12, 2012 at 2:49 pm #

Look at you. I love the hair. Your outfit is cute. Really love the do.

  23. Janice November 12, 2012 at 2:52 pm #

    Awesome pants! And awesome hair!

  24. gingermakes November 12, 2012 at 3:08 pm #

Cute! They fit perfectly, and they really do look awesome with that sweater!

  25. Amanda November 12, 2012 at 3:46 pm #

You look like an autumn pinup. Love it!

  26. Neeno - Sew Me Love November 12, 2012 at 4:37 pm #

I have pant-envy!!!!! I haven’t made pants before but I’ve made it my next project as soon as I finish my dress (which I’m hoping to finish tonight).

    Pant-envy!!! Looks good Llady!

  27. Marie November 12, 2012 at 4:42 pm #

First of all…wow, your hair! You look like a delicate little doll…it’s so, so pretty! I want it badly! Then there’s your awesome trouser and cardigan combo – you are one seriously talented lady Lauren! And I’m so grateful that you put so much into this sewalong, because even though I couldn’t take part with you, I’m definitely going to try and revisit it in the New Year ;o)

  28. Almond Rock November 12, 2012 at 6:11 pm #

So much awesomeness going on!!! I have hair and trouser and cardi envy right now. But dare I say… dangerous right hand placement on the side view photo 🙂

    • LLADYBIRD November 12, 2012 at 7:24 pm #

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh my god… That is so perfect. Leaving it there forever.

    • Andrea November 12, 2012 at 10:45 pm #

      Ahh! She’s right. Hilarious.

    • Marie November 13, 2012 at 3:33 am #

Brilliant, how did I not spot that…or were you looking too closely Amy?!? Hehehe!

  29. Emma November 12, 2012 at 6:22 pm #

Just beautiful! Pants are awesome and your hair is fabulous. It suits you so well!

  30. cidell November 12, 2012 at 8:05 pm #

Might I say, you have a great rear view! Awesome pants!

  31. fangaroni November 12, 2012 at 10:35 pm #

Wow, great pants (love the crease), cute haircut = awesome look!

  32. Andrea November 12, 2012 at 10:49 pm #

u r a qt. well done ma’am! I just bought some fabric to possibly start on my own Thurlows so I will definitely be referring to your sewalong since I got a lil tripped up on my last pair when it was just me alone with the Sewaholic instructions.

  33. Liz November 13, 2012 at 1:06 am #

These are damn fine pants – you have done an amazing job and perfect fit – LOVE!

  34. Jo November 13, 2012 at 1:56 am #

Urghhh these are so beautiful and look awesome with your cardigan! It’s awesome 😀

  35. Alli November 13, 2012 at 4:46 am #

    LOVE THEM!!!!!!

    • thesecretlifeofseams November 13, 2012 at 7:54 am #

The trousers are perfect! When I do make the trouser leap your sew-along has made the only choice the Thurlow.
Plus: love the hair, and you need to have Twin Peaks in your life. Audrey is perfect and the whole show is seasonally appropriate.
Plus plus: hand placement makes me feel I know new and surprising things about you, therefore accidental genius.

  36. sallie November 13, 2012 at 8:42 am #

Wow!! Lauren These turned out fantastic!! I’ve had a great time lurking your sew-along – it’s such hard work and you did an amazing job! But the pants… the PANTS!! I know exactly the brown-old-man trousers you mean… those ones that you think you found at the thrift store only to find that they actually make you look like an old man…? These are perfect – the perfect fit and rise and leg length/width. I also agree with the Twin Peaks references with your hair. I couldn’t quite put my finger on who you’ve been reminding me of all these years – but you are a dead ringer for Audrey! Super sexy Audrey! Even more so with the new ‘do. Love.

    • sallie November 13, 2012 at 8:43 am #

Ahh!! Just caught the little baby side peen… Too funny…

  37. Em November 13, 2012 at 10:29 am #

Love EVERYTHING about this. This sew-along has me tapping my feet to get started but I’ve gotta wait until I’m no longer in maternity pants before I can make my own Thurlows. Oy.

Your hair is fantastic. Love love love!

  38. Elise November 13, 2012 at 10:40 am #

Aah this outfit is perfect! Loving the colours and styles, your pants really do look perfect! (felt weird writing that, in Scotland ‘pants’ are underwear…) 😉

  39. Marie F. November 13, 2012 at 3:08 pm #

Hey!! First of all you look stunning in this outfit! The nice pants, your lovely cardigan and this new haircut, I really like it!

Thanks a lot for the sew-along. I am quite new at sewing, and I would not have dare to try pants this soon, without your nice posts. You can see the results on the flickr group, modeled with one of my Renfrew top :
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/90016539@N03/8183118153/

I made the short version in a black/white cotton weaved like “arrows or V” (sorry for my lack of knowledge). It was not the perfect fabric for me, it frays a lot and seems to stretch a bit. But I am quite happy with the result, they might be a bit baggy in the rear, I think it because the fabric have stretch a bit. Now I want a nice pair of pants with the nice red Chili cotton twill from mood!!

  40. Kerry November 14, 2012 at 4:29 am #

Those Thurlows are such a perfect fit, am in awe of your fitting skills. Also love the haircut – can’t beat a bob x

  41. Tilly November 14, 2012 at 7:02 am #

Eeeeep!!! LOVE the trousers, and LOVE the haircut! You look absolutely gorgeous, lady. Following your Thurlow sewalong is definitely on my to do list. xx

  42. Phil November 14, 2012 at 7:09 am #

Been taking a little look at your blog from time to time, just want to say, woah great hair!! Trousers fit great too X

  43. Sassy T November 14, 2012 at 12:48 pm #

Love the creases. Doubt my iron could do them as defined as that. Did you do anything in particular or do you just have a kick a*se iron? Lol

    • LLADYBIRD November 16, 2012 at 10:47 am #

I steamed the hell out of the creases and then let them alone on the ironing board until they had completely cooled off. I did this to both sides, and yeah, it took a bit of time but I like the end result 🙂 As far as my iron goes, it’s a Rowenta! HOTTER THAN HADES.

  44. Kelly November 14, 2012 at 12:57 pm #

Your pants are awesome, the fit is perfect! I am just starting the sewing portion of my Thurlow shorts, the cutting took forever because I chose a plaid fabric (not anticipating all of the matching…ack!) Your posts are incredibly helpful and I reference each section before I start sewing…I made a practice welt pocket and it turned out great! So thanks for all of the great photos, instructions and humor 🙂 I’ll post pics in your Flickr group when I am done!

  45. megthegrand November 14, 2012 at 1:52 pm #

Love the pants, love the mustard sweater, and OMG I LOVE YOUR HAIR. You marvelous ball of style and fabulousness, you!

  46. tracy November 14, 2012 at 2:12 pm #

i love everything you make, and usually check in on you each day – not in a scary stalker way! you are just so excellent at putting stuff together!

  47. symondezyn November 14, 2012 at 3:37 pm #

These are perfectly stunning, the fit is just awesome!! I do plan to follow the sewalong in a wee bit, when I make my first pair of Thurlows in the shorts version – so thank you for hosting this, even if I’m late to the party.

Also, your hair looks AMAZING!!! Totally suits you, girl – you look sassy and cute 🙂

  48. missjoiedevivre November 15, 2012 at 1:24 am #

Wow. Just wow. These look ah-may-zink on you. Stunning. And definitely a match made in heaven with that cardigan.

Also, new hair cut? Totally rocks.

  49. Clare S November 17, 2012 at 7:55 am #

Wow, your Thurlows look grorgeous! You’re seriously tempting me to try out trousers … Maybe that’s a winter project. Thanks for all the fab tutorials on these – they’re making me less terrified of the thought of sewing trousers!

  50. JuliaBobbin November 21, 2012 at 2:38 pm #

These pants are so freaking amazing I want to punch myself in the face! I love it teamed with the cardigan and you’re new hair cut looks so perfect. It really suits you. Bravo!

  51. SeamstressErin November 29, 2012 at 4:53 pm #

Love the pants, and the cardigan, and the hair, and everything about it!
Wanted to say thanks for hosting the sew-along. Inspired me to make my own shorts (that I’m friggin in love with and already making another pair and planning the pants).
Finally got my own post up here: http://seamstresserin.com/thurlow-shorts-in-sage-velour/
    Thanks again! Hearts -e

OOH! Yay, this makes me so happy! 😀

  52. Jen December 24, 2012 at 3:08 am #

Thanks for this sewalong Lauren, I just finished my first pair of shorts and I’m so happy with how they turned out! needed your help a couple of times since the instructions weren’t quite enough info for me and they turned out great. Next up is some denim shorts (its summer here).

  53. Jenny February 9, 2016 at 4:37 am #

I really can’t thank you enough for this sewalong! As of yesterday evening I’m the proud owner of a pair of Thurlows in soft shell for cross-country skiing and if it wasn’t for you I think I’d still be swearing at the pockets. All I need now is some snow…

  54. Katie July 19, 2023 at 3:56 pm #

Hi, do you have a pic of how to sew the crotch seam? The allowance says 5/8 inch but at the extension if I use 5/8 they don’t connect. On the pattern the lowest part of the extension appears to be about 3/8? Thanks
