A few months ago, I was contacted by Spiegel (yes, the catalog company!) about trying out a new machine that they were in the process of manufacturing. “Free sewing machine” is one of the quickest ways to grab my attention (don’t even lie, you’d do the exact same thing), and I was especially intrigued when they told me the price point was under $300. Y’all know I’m a diehard for my Bernina & Pfaff machines, but we all know that a budget is a very real and personal thing, and not everyone can afford to spend $2k+ on a piece of machinery – no matter how much you just looove sewing. I get that – I was in the same position myself for a very long time. That being said, it’s hard to recommend something at a lower price point when most stuff in that category is just pure awful. Even $500 is a lot of money for a lot of people, and that’s about the bare minimum that I could comfortably recommend for a new/non-vintage machine. Super bummer. Sewing should be for everyone, not just the people with bulging bank accounts.
All that being said, I am pretty excited about this Spiegel 60609 machine! I will admit that I was pretty apprehensive about it’s potential shortcomings before I had a chance to try it out for myself – yes, it is a beautiful machine, but it is a polished turd? I was lucky enough to see the machine before it hit the stores way back in November – I stopped by the Spiegel headquarters while I was in NYC and spent a couple of hours being wooed with sewing machines and chai lattes, yay – and I’ve had this particular machine taking up residence in my sewing room since December. We’ve had some time to really get to know each other, and things have been pretty awesome. Spiegel 60609 is good stuff, y’all.
A quick overview of the machine – Spiegel 60609 is a computerized machine with over 350 built-in stitches, plus the option to download more stitches via iTunes and Google Play. It has plenty of standard and not-so-standard features – automatic start/stop technology (as in, you can sew with the press of a button instead of using the foot pedal), one-step button hole, speed control, twin needle capability, automatic needle threader, presser foot pressure dial, to name a few. It also has some very unusual, very cool features – it has a built-in Wifi station, which connects to the StitchCam located over the needle (!!!). The little gold shelf you see is designed to hold your cell phone or tablet, and there’s a Handy Hook that pops up to really secure things in place so they don’t bounce around while you’re sewing. Ideally, you’d have your phone up there to access tutorials on the Spiegel sewing app – but personally, I use it to watch Netflix while I’m sewing 😛 BECAUSE I CAN. Oh, yeah, and there’s a USB port in the side of the machine, which is super handy for recharging your phone after you’ve used up the battery on a bunch of X-Files episodes. Ahem. And the most important part – the stitch quality! It’s surprisingly good. Like, really really good. My only complaint is that the throat plate doesn’t have a lot of markings for seam allowances, but that can easily be rectified with strips of tape (or, in my case, Post-It notes).
Unlike most budget-friendly machines, the Spiegel 60609 actually has a heavy-duty metal frame (no plastic! Rejoice!) to keep it from bouncing around all over your table when you’ve pushed things to their highest speed. This metal frame extends all the way into the handle – so you can actually use it to carry the machine, instead of holding the whole thing like a baby (go ahead and laugh, but about a year ago, the plastic handle on my Bernina snapped in half and I dropped it on the ground. It’s fine now – it was fixed under warranty and the machine was not harmed, but MAN ALIVE that was a horrifying moment). It comes with an impressive array of included accessories – several feet (including a zipper foot, overcasting foot, blind hem foot, button hole foot, and non-stitch foot), extra needles and bobbins, screwdrivers, and quilting guides. It is my understanding that the machine was designed to be compatible with most standard low-shank feet (of course, neither of my machines have those kinds of feet – the Bernina is high-shank, and the Pfaff is one of the old German ones that *only* uses special Pfaff feet). I believe Spiegel is in the process of getting together a box o’feet that you can buy to use with the machine, though, if you’re in the same boat I am. I totally have a foot fetish when it comes to sewing machines, so I am pretty pumped about that!
The Spiegel 60609 retails for a hair under $300, and is available at Walmart (either in-house at your local store, or you can order online and ship free to your store) and also through Spiegel. While I do advocate supporting your local sewing machine store by purchasing through them, I understand that not everyone *has* a local sewing machine store, or can afford a $500 base model. Let’s be perfectly clear here – this is not a substitute for that high-end, several thousand dollar specialty machine. However, it is a great not-quite-so-basic machine that is perfect for a beginner, in a price range that works with a lot more budgets. Plus, it’s super pretty. Look at that fancy gold and white and tell me that’s not a beautiful machine. I dare you.
This post would be pretty useless without some proof of stitch quality, right? Here are some quick tests I did. I realize now that I should have included some comparisons of Bernina vs Spiegel – I will next time!
For this one, I lengthened the stitches by a couple mm and used a different color thread for the bobbin. The fabric is an old sheet, so it’s pretty sturdy.
Here are the stitches on a much more delicate fabric – some *very* lightweight Liberty of London cotton/silk voile. Still no skipped stitches and no puckers.
Finally, a sampling of some of the embroidery stitches and another shot of the straight stitch. Not too shabby!
With all that being said – I’ve decided to partner with Spiegel, so expect more 60609 love throughout the year! I will be sharing monthly projects and tutorials, all of which are sewn on the Spiegel 60609, to show how versatile the machine is. That is, if I haven’t convinced you already 🙂 I will still be using my other machines as well for other projects (let’s be real, those are my babies and I ain’t planning on dumping them off!), so don’t expect this blog to turn into a giant sales pitch. But if you want to see more of what the machine is capable of doing – well, I have some plans in the works! 🙂

GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED
Good luck, everyone! ♥
This is so exciting! I’m in the process of designing several bridal shower dresses along with my wedding dress. So the very first thing I’d get my paws on with this would be to tackle one of those! Shower dresses first in all likelihood because they’re due first!
I would finally tackle “The Farmer’s Wife – 1930’s”! Can’t wait to see the machine in person!
A dark navy blue black faux fur Gerard.
i AMSO BUMMED OUT! I JUST HEAR ABOUT THE GIVEAWAY AND IT IS CLOSED! Such a BEAUTIFUL machine and great features on top of that! will have to SAVE up for it, embroidery machine wiped me out!, LOL!
The first sewing project would be a summer dress for me! This giveaway is fantastic! 😀
Hmmmm, what wouldn’t I sew?!! I am constantly sewing and I mean constantly…even in my sleep. I think I would have her (already named “Goldie” of course after Goldie Hawn cuz she’s so cute) set up with some topstitching thread for my Ginger Flares which are coming down the pike 😀
This is great! The machine really is beautiful- and I appreciate all of the innovations. The cell phone holder and USB port are smart ideas. Now that we’re approaching the end of winter I’m realizing how much I really need a good winter coat. I’ve been looking into fabric and patterns already, so a coat would definitely be my first project. A brand new machine would be really fun to work with!
First project on this beauty, where to start?! I have had my eye on some Ginger Jeans for the longest time (and have the pattern), so I would dive in with those! Gold top stitch thread to match the machine 👌🏼
What a lovely looking machine!
I would get ready for the upcoming Spring season and create a floral A-line skirt :0)
Maybe a bag to go along with it.
What a great machine I would make a dress or blouse for myself.
Hi Lauren,
My first project will be the Kate Top by Tessuti in a charcoal light weight or medium weight linen. I also have a Liberty in a paisley to make up the Kate Top as well. The Spiegel 60609 is a pretty machine.

Love the phone shelf! I’ve been wanting to give sewing jeans a try so that would probably be my first project.
I love those embroidery stitches! I’d make some nice linen napkins so I could play around with them.
WOW! That’s a way better machine than I currently have! If I won this machine I would definitely feel more comfortable making clothes for my daughter out of some sheer fabric!!
I just finished my wedding dress and veil (well, 98% finished) and the giveaway ends right after my wedding weekend, but I’ve been drooling over this machine. My first project post-wedding is going to be a muslin of M6649- my first button up! I bet that stitch cam would come in reaaaal handy.
Did you say world-wide?! Oh, my! This is so awesome! I know exactly what I would sew on this machine (which is quite fancier than my super basic current one). I would make a shirtdress. I’ve wanted to make one for quite some time, but I’m terrified of buttonholes and my machine only does four-step buttonholes.
(owl.laughing@gmail.com)
This isn’t a brand I am familiar with as a beginner in the UK so that was really interesting to find out what else is out there other than the usual Singer, Bernina, Janome etc. If I won I would definitely make something like a Shirt Dress. The machine I have at the moment which is my beginner machine, has a 4 step buttonhole and it really puts me off making anything with buttons 🙂 I have been researching where to go with a computerised machine so something like this could be the way forward!
That is actually really stylish, maybe I would not feel so guilty about leaving it on the dining room table if I had that machine. I would probably attempt a denim type shirt dress, not sure I fancy doing all those button holes on my very basic Singer.
I’ve been wanting to make the True Bias Southport dress – I have some gorgeous rayon print fabric that I’d love to try on this machine!
Giveaway? Count me in. I love my Babylock, but there is always room for another sewing machine in my studio, no matter what the hubby thinks. 🙂
My first project would be some Jalie 3461 Eleonore pants! I’ve got them all cut out but haven’t had the motivation to start sewing/I’m a little scared cause it’s my first pair of pants!
Such a pretty machine! I’d sew a pair of jeans (maybe some more Birkin Flares?) to test it out!
Thanks for this review!
If I won this machine, my first project would be a floral dress in anticipation of Spring! S i.e. is beautiful, but spring flowers beat it every time.
That is a pretty great machine, looks like. I’d probably sew some jeans as my current machine is have troubles with super thick fabrics.
xxx
I’m planning an 80’s prom dress, so that would be the first thing I sew on this beautiful machine!! Thanks for the giveaway!
Yes! Pretty please with sugar on top! I would make a blue spring jacket and use some of the embrodery stitches on the pockets. It’s a beauty! Please send it to Sweden 🙂
I’m just getting back into costume making and have 3 very detailed costumes to make by August. I’d love a computerized machine with that!
Looks like it has some cool features. The first thing I would make would be something fun for me, since I have been making a lot of curtains recently. Maybe a jersey top, to see how it coped with sewing jersey. Thanks for the giveaway!
I love the look of this machine! So many more things I could do with this! Also yay to this being a worldwide giveaway!! I usually can’t enter since I’m in Germany. P.S, I love seeing email from your blog. Love the things you do and the way you write, it just sounds like I’m talking to a friend and that makes it alle the more fu to read 🙂
Forgot to mention what I’d make first. Was too excited about the fact it’s worldwide. Haha.
I think I’d make that dark blue fitted jumpsuit/romper I’ve been dreaming about…. Hmmmm…..
This looks like a pretty great machine for the money, and I would sew some Liberty of London summer blouses, I think. I really need some. Thanks for the opportunity to win the machine, and I wish you the best of luck with Spiegel.
I want to try my hand at lingerie sewing but my machine hates/eats elastic. My first project would be a Watson set.
Love the design and the fact that I could watch tutorials while I sew! My first project would be a knit laundry day tee. I love my Bernina but I am friggin’ OVER skipped stitches when sewing knits. I love knit garments but the frustration when sewing hacks me off to no end and sewing becomes a chore instead of fun. I NEED A NEW MACHINE (yes, Bernie is old and not top of the line). Lauren, please help me love sewing again?? Please help me make a simple knit tee without being forced walk away in frustration? please???
I’m machine less and have been trying to sew by hand and goodness it is not working so well. So my first project would probably be to resew this skirt I sewed. I thought it was all good but then I stood up at a meeting at work and let loose a good 1/4 of the skirt’s gathering. My boss is still laughing.
My sewing machine isn’t a fan of stretchy fabric, so the first thing I would sew would probably be a tank top or tshirt dress.
Oh! I know what I’ll sew! I’ll stop being a chicken and sew a bra! Love the blog!
This looks so fancy in comparison to my terrible beginner machine! I love the phone holder- perfect for popping some sunday morning radio on 🙂 I would definitely love to us this on a project I don’t trust my current machine on- a replica pattern I made of a favorite old dress in a nautical fabric I have been saving for it! x
This machine is impressive and since I already have machines, I would give it to my daughter! She is very crafty and has wanted a sewing machine. Since I am retired on a fixed income, this is a way for me to help her become a seamstress like her mother.😃
I love the place to put a smartphone, that’s so clever! My first project would be a Sew Over It shirtdress!
This is cool. I will be sewing a summer top and a tote bag first. Already in love with her. YAY!
I’ve been eyeballing this machine for awhile. The price had me thinking it might be terrible, but the reviews I’m seeing are saying otherwise. I’d love a chance to try one out myself!
The first thing I would sew on this machine is a birthday dress! Everyone need a special dress for their birthday.
I’d go for ginger jeans! Looks like this machine would do a nice job with topstitching. Fingers crossed!
Your review is the second review I’ve seen and both were good. It’s nice to see a new face in sewing land, it indicates that interest is growing. Yay! I can picture some beautiful little baby dresses with some of the decorative stitches for a first project. Sueann301 at yahoo.
I would love to win this! 😃 Not sure what would be the first thing I’d make with it though. I’d probably want to play with the fancy stitches for a bit. Thanks for the chance to win!
I’d make the shirt dress I’ve been planning.
What a gorgeous machine! I’ve had a denim skirt cut out for ages, would love to get that shizzle finally sewn up!
This machine looks great. If I won I would make my first Active Wear project on it, The Seamwork Aires leggings (https://www.seamwork.com/catalog/aires). ahsh.frampton(at)gmail.com
I need to finish some baby blankets I started. I also have some mending to do!
I reposted to correct my e-mail address. Sorry about that!
Awesome giveaway, Lauren. I’d love to give those embroidery stitches a go. And I see another pair of jeans in my future. Which would be the perfect project to see what a machine is really made of 🙂
The first thing I’d sew is embroidery stitches on every scrap of fabric I own.
I would make some cute 1940s clothing to Lindyhop dance in! What a amazing giveaway!!!
My first project on that classy white-and-gold lady would be something that takes advantage of the adjustable presser foot pressure–jeans, perhaps? I know it seems strange that I’d forego a fancy embroidered something in favor of such a workaday feature, but my own beloved machine doesn’t have it, and I can definitely tell when it struggles with very thick and very thin fabrics. I’d love to know what it’s like to glide through a heavy seam instead of laboriously cranking through it!
I have some beautiful, crazy print vintage 70s fabric, so I’d sew a 70s caftan tunic!
I would probably try to figure out how to make a silk archer with no puckering stitches – I can’t quite get them straight with my bottom of the range machine.
I would bust a move on my plans to learn to sew knits with a Lark tee!
Woho – a new sewing machine would be so great! I would sew a new coat, something I haven’t done yet.
Machine giveaway? Count me in!! I’m into shirt sewing now so another Archer will be my first project. Although I’m a Bernina fan myself, this machine sounds awesome for the price.
First project I would do is finish all my ufos. I have a great wool and leather jacket that I have been putting off because my little machine just can’t handle it.
Hi Lladybird & Spiegel! This post is definitely attention grabbing! I would love lovelove to sew myself a Raymond coat by French pattern company République du Chiffon (http://republiqueduchiffon.com/fr/patrons-pochette/54-manteau-raymond.html). This machine definitely seems sturdy enough to handle the thickness involved. Pretty please, merci beaucoup!
I would finish the wrap skirt that has been sitting on my workbench for 3 months!
I would sew some flowy linen pants. Spring starts early here in the deep south. What a wonderful giveaway, Lauren.
I love the look of this machine! And living in Germany getting this sewing machine would be really, really great!!!
And the first thing I would sew with it is a Ginger 😉
Greetings from Germany!
Marina
I will have to pick one up at Walmart next time I am there. I am new to computerized machines, so this is a good starting point for me. With a new machine I would sew button-down dresses and skirts. I avoid buttonholes right now and would love to see how the computerized machines handle them.
White and gold party dress to match the machine, because I love gimmicks.
I would love to win this machine. My first project would be a blouse with some fabric my son gave me for Christmas. My current machine makes awful buttonholes and it would be great to have a machine that likes buttonholes.
The first thing I’d make is a whole whack of mini briars for my baby girl. I’m SO TIRED of her cheap big box store clothes!!
I’d LOVE to be able to make my own dress for my husband’s graduation in May! He’s graduating from a PhD program (after two different masters programs) and it’s been a long time coming. I can’t find a dress that is absolutely perfect enough for the occasion and would love to make one!
This machine is beautiful! I would make more knot dresses, because you can never have too many of those!
My first project would definitely be a denim shift dress, they are popping up everywhere in the UK in time for spring and I’ve wanted to sew one for a while 🙂
What a stunning machine and at such a great price point! Amazing.
I would finally get around to making my Colette patterns Dahlia dress – enough procrastination! 🙂
I would sew a dress first thing. My sister is getting married in a month and there’s no excuse like a wedding to make a new dress!
So impressed this giveaway is open worldwide! Thanks to you and Spiegel for that! 350 stitches you say? Well, in that case I might just have to sew a felt wallhanging of a New Zealand bird in amongst the reeds and use all those pretty stitches to appliqué the brightly coloured pieces of felt on! After that it would be something from one of my multitude of vintage patterns, I’m thinking of a play-suit actually! Great review 🙂
I would make the dress I have for a formal this spring, planning on using the Starburst pattern from the November 2011 burdastyle.
My first project would be a denim shift dress, they are popping up everywhere in the UK at the moment and I’ve wanted to see one for a while 🙂
That is a sweet machine! I mostly sew dresses…. So a I would sew a dress on it.
Hmm, one can never have enough sewing machines, right? The first project on this machine would be a simple pillow case or so as I would sew together wiht my 6yr old daughter!
naehconnection at gmail dot com
Oops, missed out my email – it’s megan.parkinson.uk at gmail.com
Wow, that looks pretty cool. I would definitely like to try some activewear on that, starting with the Jalie Cora leggings. My Elna serger+cover stitch just died, and my dear, reliable, old Pfaff sewing machine has neither presser foot pressure adjustment nor a stretch stitch, so I would love a machine with those features!
Wow! Lovely looking machine. I would be sewing something up for my handmade honeymoon (road trip through the Deep South) Perhaps the Sew Over It Ultimate Trousers or the Tilly Orla top.
This is great!! My first project would be a basic cotton button down shirt. I would be looking forward to using the button-hole making stitch. Currently I have to go elsewhere to do them, so this would be an improvement!
I’ve got a knit dress cut out, so I’d give that a go first.
This machine looks awesome!!! If I won it, I would definitely whip up some more baby clothes and a few things for me (since nothing fit right now).
Baby items. Expecting a new one in our family in 7 weeks.
I would sew a Butterick 5526 button down, man! My favorite shirt ever, learned of it on this here blog! I am very intrigued by this machine – thank you for the opportunity to win one!
What a pretty machine! I’d probably finally try sewing one up of my Watson bra kits!
Thanks for the giveaway! I’m not sure exactly what I would make, but for sure I would try to make something highlighting those great decorative stitches, since my current machine can’t really do any.
Ha! I doubt I will win, but heck I’ve been debating a second machine for like 2 years. I have a Bernina 430 and love it, but need a travel machine. What would I sew first… Likely a super boring white button down. Or I can make my next pair of jeans, and have the Bernina set up for topstitching and this one for actual seams. Too many decisions!
How fabulous! My first project would be Style Arc Kerry Cargo pants!!!
I would use my Spiegel 60609 to sew a sleeveless dress for spring/summer. That machine looks great! I have three sewing machines and none of them work well.
I currently have a bunch of projects cut out, but am looking for a new sewing machine, so this would be perfect! My first project would be to finish a scrappy welder’s cap I am making for my husband’s new hobby.
So pretty! I’d sew the christmas presents I didn’t get to finish since my cheapie Brother machine broke in Dec.
I think I would dive into some summer shorts. What a beautiful machine!
I would sew a new shirt for myself!
Sarah
It is so pretty! Love the gold trim (and great idea to have a shelf on there)…My first project would be another pair of Ginger jeans.
Kristen
Yes please! I love my vintage machine, but it would be great to have some more modern stitch options 😀
Oh this sounds so cool!! The idea of a metal frame instead of plastic…my poor budget Brother starts to dance if I stitch too quickly. My first project on a sturdier machine would probably some Ginger jeans!
I would sew a new wardrobe for my new job that doesn’t allow me to wear jeans!!!
I’d have to take advantage of all those embroidery stitches. My two machines are very lacking. Probably some knitting project bags with lots of fancy stitches. Would love to add this to the collection.
Amazing giveaway. I would sew something for my new baby expected in September
I am gobsmacked by how beautiful the machine is. The number of stitches is very impressive, and it survived your testing! It is nice that there is a good machine out there for beginner and intermediate sewers.
Oh, yes ! I would startby sewing sew the long-awaited-long-moaned-after bottom pyjama pants for my boyfriend, who has been complaining about the lack of it since my previous sewing machine died…
Either some of the Fifi PJs or the new coat I’ve got waiting in the wings. What a pretty machine!
Wow what an amazing giveaway! The first thing I would sew would be a beautiful cover to keep my shiny new machine free from dust 🙂
H.
Wonderful giveaway! The first project I would sew is a shirt for my husband.
very impressive machine! it looks sturdy!
I forgot to say that I would love to sew a dress shirt for my dad!
How exciting! I would sew thurlows for myself first.
I love that machine! I’d love love love to win it. 😀
Oh and I would totally sew a bra on it!
I have been wanting a new machine for so long it’s sad (mine is over 30yrs old and tempermental), The first thing I would sew——-lots of mending to tell the truth then on to
clothes for myself. The mending has been on hold since as I said above, my machine gets stubborn and has to rest inbetween projects. There are so many things I want to finish, make, alter, I could go on and on. Thanks for offering this wonderful give-a-way.
I would end up sewing another one of my tried-and-true vintage house dresses. Nothing like an old favorite on some new hardware!
Looks like a nice machine for the price. I love those embroidery stitches! I would use the machine to sew all the summer dresses I’ve got on my summer sewing list!
Whoa! What a fantastic giveaway! I am in the same boat as people you mention. I have been sewing for a couple of years and burned through a couple of $200 models. I could use a machine like this. I would probably sew Simplicity 1104. I just muslined and was able to get a pretty good fit. Ready to move onto good fabric!
Thanks for the chance to win!
hi! (am so excited to enter i knocked over container of legos…) um, i would (begin) work on my fancy dress for next holiday season. thank you soooo much for doing this! i love my brother machine, but the bells & whistles… 🙂
I am very intrigued by Spiegel machines after this post! My first project would be more circle skirts for the upcoming summer 🙂
Such a generous give-away! I would sew up some much-needed work slacks.
My first project on this machine would have to be something that requires lots of topstitching. I’d love to have one machine to thread with topstitching thread and one with the regular stuff….
Cool! I would sew leggings.
That is one heck of a beautiful machine! I can feel me getting a bad case of the grabby hands.
I think I’d spend forever playing with those embroidery stitches and probably go mental and tell myself I’m going use one of my vintage patterns and embroider the crap out of it.
I would make a personalized craft toolkit pouch. It always amazes me that a sewing machine can do so much embroidery.
I’ve been thinking about lingerie sewing a lot lately so a pair of underwear would be a good start, I think.
Being able to watch Netflix whilst seeing and it’s right there? My heart just skipped a beat!
Machine looks frockin awesome!!! (Did you get the pun?)
Frankie
Knitwitsowls@gmail.com
Yay, a worldwide giveaway! I would take advantage of those embroidery stitches and make some really cute shorts.
I love the embroidery stitches! I would make something using them, like gift bags and gift card holders, and may even look for ways to add those stitches to clothing!
What?!? This machine looks awesome. I am currently only working on gifts for friends/family and my 3 boys. I would love to make ME something!
I have been itching to try quilting, and I would start out by requiting my baby blanket – it is almost 30 years old and has the lining of my Dad’s baby blanket that my Grandmother who passed made me. I found an old bag at a antique store that had the same pattern as one of the pieces on my baby blanket!
I’d probably sew a skirt on it. I’m in dire need of new skirts!
Wow what a great giveaway. I’m a new sewer so this machine would suit me down to the ground. Seeing as this machine is good at sewing delicate fabric I would make a slinky Fifi pyjama set from Tilly & the buttons. Fingers crossed.
😍😍😍 OMG it’s sounds like a dream come true!! I’d probably (actually) finish my Cinderella cosplay or maybe another 1880s dress…
Ooh, I would sew something with some of the lightweight, slippery fabric I’ve been hoarding. My current machine cannot deal.
Agh! I JUST bought myself a second-hand sewing machine because I just moved to Paris. But this one looks great. My next project is another tova shirt 🙂
As a mother I feel almost compelled to say I’d sew something for them, but I really want to sew a new bag for me!
I would sew all my Ohhh Lulu patterns and admire the beauty of adjustable presser foot pressure. Thanks for the giveaway! I’ve loved hearing about this machine and I definitely covet it.
Wow! This is such an exciting giveaway! I think the first thing I would make would have to be an Archer. It’s such a joy to sew if the fabric presses well, and I would have fun with the embroidery stitches on the pockets and/or the collar. Also, I think a woven fabric would be a good place to start when using a new machine for the first time. And I’ve got the perfect fabric in my stash 🙂
I love the retro look, pretty cool. A dress for sure, I haven’t had tooooo much success with patterns so I usually do a self drafted thing.
Gorgeous machine. I’d make a white ponte blazer with lace sleeves!
OOOOH! This machine is truly a beauty! And Spiegel really tried to make it versatile with all those features. Do you think it would make it through some jeans? I would love to try some Ginger jeans on this for sure.
Thank you for creating this exciting giveaway. I am a fairly new seamstress, but I am getting better with every creation. I have been sewing steady for about a year now, and I love it. I would make my wedding dress with this machine. I am 48 years old and plan to marry again. I would make my wedding dress, and this is the first project I would use the Spiegel 60609 for. Ps. I don’t have a wedding date yet. Pss. I also don’t have a manfriend yet, but they are both coming. 🙂
How exciting! I am one of those “budget” people & I do have to budget monthly! It looks like a wonderful machine! I currently have only a Janome basic machine. My 1st pattern would be the Fen dress, I have had the pattern in my stash waiting to be sewn.
Thank you so much!!
Wow, sounds like this machine impressed you ! I look forward to seeing the side by side stitch comparison with a Bernina. I love the retro look of it. Bearing that in mind, I’d refashion a Goodwill gem into something more contemporary for me.
Hi! I would looooovvvveee a new machine! I would make a baby quilt for a friend who is expecting.
It is a beautiful machine! I would probably piece a quilt with it.
gosh, what a cool machine. i guess my first up would have to be a cambie dress or georgia dress. i’ve had them in my queue for a while but my rickety sewing machine has prevented me getting to them. thanks for the giveaway – and the fact it is worldwide!
A really nice set of features for the price point. I would make some skirts for spring/ summer.
This looks like a very nice machine for sure. I adore your blog and have been following it for quite a long time. I really like the socks that your knit, although I would never be able to do those myself. My mother was a great seamstress and quilter in her time, and she passed away late last year. We were cleaning out her sewing room, and most of it has ended up in my hands. My first project is to do a memory quilt top from her favorite fabrics she had saved, and some of her clothes that she had left us. I am currently working on a quilt that she didn’t have time to finish, and is still up on the boards in my old bedroom she converted to a quilting room. Thank you for putting up such a wonderful giveaway!
The first thing I would do with it? Just prop my Ipad on it and watch via my own wi-fi station! Then after an episode of Nashville, I might sew a small quilt top.
Thanks for the give-away.
What a pretty machine. I’d probably make something for my daughter, her birthday is in March & I love sewing up fun summer dresses for her & my other 2 daughters as well. 😀
Soo nice abd versatile machine. My first project will be nursing shirts or baby clothes. Hope I get it. Thanks!!!
Zowie, that’s a lovely machine! I would make a Mimi blouse from Tilly & the Buttons. It’s next up on my list and I have the perfect bright blue material with little black and white flowers… j9s@flash.net Thank you!
Yay! This is so fun! I would definitely sew some woven tanks. It’ll be summer soon amirite!?!?
I would start on my spring/summer wardrobe!
This looks very interesting. I have been looking for a “newer” machine which has a needle threader and a thread cutter. (I did’t see any info on the cutter.) This looks like a fabulous chance to try something more in my price range, which is under $800.
I sew on all vintage machines and most of them are straight stitch. I want to sew more knits, especially casual cotton knit floral dresses to wear in my flower booth at the Farmer’s Market. I have been wary of the computerized machines even though I love my apple products!
I was not even aware that Spiegel still existed! Back in the day, when I was a young professional, I bought all my clothes through the Spiegel catalog! Loved that catalog!
Thank you both for such an awesome giveaway! My first project would be a pair of Ginger jeans.
that looks like a pretty amazing machine!
I’m working on a wearable muslin of Hey June’s Cheyenne in view B right now, so my first project would probably be a tunic length Cheyenne!
The Spiegel is a beauty. She has a vintage look to her but is also very modern. If I won her, the first thing I’d sew is a birthday outfit for my niece who turns 1 year old on April 1st. I love her. 🙂
Hello! The machine looks amazing. I’ve been struggling with old basic sewing machine for years and finally decided to get something more versatile to improve my projects. But unfortunately, I was on a budged so still bought quite basic one. However, the baby is being used almost every day for tiny fixes or bigger projects.
If I won this machine, I would finally make a long summer dress from my lovely lightweight cream polka dot fabric that I had for three years and always was too afraid to ruin with my not so delicate machines. This Spiegel product would give me extra courage to make my dream dress. Summer is coming after all!
OMG!! I”ve been searching for machines for my two daughters, both of whom have recently expressed an interest in sewing. This looks like it would be the perfect machine for them. Both live away from home. My oldest daughter works near my office, and we sometimes go to my house at lunchtimes to sew. It would be awesome if I win this so I can give it to her!
Oops forgot to add – right now w’ere working on tops, so I’m sure that would be the first thing we would sew!
I have really been wanting to make a top notch Nightmare Moon cosplay that would really stand out from the crowd, so I would make cool looking halter top and cape combo! 🙂
I am one of those who has a small budget and would a machine like that one. I’m glad you will be using it to show what it can do.
What a great looking machine! I would sew a By Hand Sophia Dress.
What a great give-a-way! Thank you for the opportunity! My first project would be applique pillows for my grandkids.
I would make another skirt. I have a couple already cut out.
Ahh this looks perfect for my sewing/Netflix addiction! I have a pair of Tania culottes up next – I think I’d start with that! : )
Love this machine! I would make a Linden Sweatshirt for sure! My machine hates knits.
Thank you!
To be honest, if I won the machine I would spend at least a week just playing with all those stitches! Maybe make a crazy quilt to show them off.
The first thing I’d sew with this beauty would be some wild pyjama pants for my grand baby.
I want to teach my husband how to sew. He would LOVE this machine because it is so cool and because he could tune into those X-files episodes and listen to lectures and watch movies while “working” on his projects. It’s the only way I could get him to even approach a sewing machine. He would really go nuts for the alphabet ’cause he is just so into words! He says he would make tote bags as his first project. Somehow I think a superhero cape would be in there somewhere, too. If he didn’t like sewing (impossible to imagine but, nevertheless, some folks are built that way), I would donate it to the local domestic violence shelter so women and their kids could use it to repair their hearts as well as their clothes.
Great read and I was amazed to see so many stitches on the machine. So, getting ready for spring I would make myself and my girls a modified Greenstyle Bella Bubble dresses.
I would use it to make a quilt
What a beautiful machine! Im kind of a beginner sewer and I’ve been itching to sew some beautiful pillow cases for my bed and pillow covers for throw pillows on my couch. I would love to see this gorgeous machine displayed in my house. I know it would be the motivation I need to get going on those sewing projects.
I had a similar machine when my kids were growing up. I cried when it finally died, it was so sturdy. I would dearly love another one that didn’t tax my aging brain to use. Bells and whistles are just noise (er, music?), but quiet reliability would win my heart.
I would love to sew my wedding dress for my civil marriage on this beautiful machine!
Me please! This machine would help me get my sewing mojo back (haven’t done much sewing since the birth of my babies!) I have a fabulous cocoon coat I’d like to make and of course SUMMER DRESSES!
It does look very fancy – loads of added extras. I think I’d sew some jeans on it first – that should be a good way of getting to know it!
Hi, thanks for the giveaway. I would make an outfit for my newborn daughter. I am not much of a girly girl myself, jeans and tshirts here, but I am having a ball making her frilly dresses. Thanks.
I’ve got a crazy purple floral that’s been staying me down for months. I think it needs to be a dress.
I would love this machine! My project would be to make our family skate bags — over the shoulder carriers for our ice skates!
Thank you for running this contest. The first thing I’d sew would be a knitting project bag.
Awe some giveaway! If I win, I will make a beautiful linen dress with one of those lovely decorative stitches on the sleeves, hem and neck. It’s almost spring so I’m thinking about sewing crisp, lovely woven right now (sigh)
What a great machine! My first project would be ice skate holders for my family!
Since I’ve just taken up sewing again after a new-baby-imposed hiatus, I’d give those fancy embroidery stitches a try on some little-people clothing -just until my new body shape stabilizes long enough for me to sew some pants for myself!
I would definitely make my daughter’s first birthday dress with this!
Wow – this is an awesome giveaway! I’m new to sewing, and would love this machine. The first thing I would attempt to sew would be a vintage style dress
I love this! My first project would have to be finishing my best friend’s Christmas present. My machine broke in the middle of a cats-in-Christmas-hats pillowcase, of all things.
I know what my first project will be: a seamwork mesa. It is my new uniform an I made 4 of those in a week. I’m not optimistic enough to promise a Thrulow, I’m on my 7th or 8 muslin, and counting…
It does look like a cool machine. I love the gold design!
Ofer
Would love to use this machine on my next project! Just picked up Vogue 9176 yesterday, on sale no less. I have some fabulous crepe I picked up at Britex SF that would be ideal for the short jacket. You know that kind of fabric you just sit and stare at for months waiting for the “right” pattern to come along. Thanks for the giveaway!
Ginger jeans!! I bought the pattern, fabric next. This would be an awesome first project. Love the spot for your phone for tutorials AND Netflix! Well played Spiegel.
I’d love this machine for my best friend, who has a 40 year old machine. Email is vvnbaker@gmail.com.
Sounds fun! I would make a gathered skirt (knowing me).
I’d make a coat for my cat!
LOL!!! Spiegel has a very good sense of humor naming the machine 60609! Having grown up in Chicago I’m very familiar with Spiegel 🙂 So, to honor the Spiegel 60609’s roots, I think I’d sew a quilt with the Chicago skyline as my first project.
What a wonderful giveaway! I think I’d love to bust out one of my vintage patterns on that baby!
It sounds like a great sewing machine!! If I had one, I’d made a simple dress in a solid colour and then… I’d cover it with those pretty embroidery stitches! 😀
I would like to teach my grandson how to sew. Whenever I am sewing he has a 1001 questions, so the best answer is to teach him on this Spiegel sewing machine. It sounds like it could handle a 7 years old’s rough handling!
Thanks for the review! I’m working on a gray quilt, if by “working” you understand that I mean I sew a square every once in awhile when the mood hits. That would be my first project, but I’d love to try some of those fancy embroidery stitches as well. I can see lines of them in different colors along the edges of pillowcases…
I would make am 80s dress. Like the ones I remember my mom ordering from the catalog when I was a little girl. She got a lot of her workclothes from Spiegal!
Oh man! A worldwide contest! Yippee shouts the Canadian! I’ve been holding off making the Colette Anise jacket for myself – not sure if my machine can get through all those layers of wool. Thanks!
I think the first thing I’d sew is maternity activewear!!! I am not pregnant now, but hope to be. During my first pregnancy my current machine struggled with skipped stitches on wicking fabric… And I had to throw in the towel on maternity yoga tops!! Ugh! Hoping this machine would allow me to make fun maternity wear since I practice yoga 3-4 times per week….(i actually practiced yoga AFTER my water broke the day I delivered my son’s.. Because I’m crazy and denial is a powerful thing!!!) That machine looks impressive for $300!!!!
cool! My daughter would love to have a sewing machine of her own. She uses mine but it would be great if we could sew at the same time 🙂 thanks for the chance!
Wow! That’s a great give-away! That beauty would look wonderful in my new sewingroom. I have been ‘borrowing’ my mom’s pfaff for several years now. When she needs it she picks it up and then my sewingproject just have to wait.
This could be a great solution! And a great birthdaypresent 🙂
I would start with a skirt for my darling niece.
Greetings from Holland and keep up the great work on your blog.
Mariska
This machine looks so good – I’m currently on the market for a computerized sewing machine (sooooooo many pretty stitches!) and its art deco golden lines would look so perfect in my bedroom – and the support for an tablet is sheer genius. I even looked it up on Spiegel, but the shipping & handling would be a wooping $185 to France…
So let’s just hope I win this thing and get to sew my wedding dress with it! Although the first thing I’d like to make this year is a decadent silk velvet robe.
Thank you to both Spiegel and you for this giveaway – that’s very generous.
Ohh I would love to win! If I did I would see Butterick B6295. I have the pants cut and ready to go
What a pretty machine! I would happily use it to make up a purple dotted silk voile blouse that I am cutting out.
Awesome! I’d make some simple totes to get to know the machine, and then a summer dress.
The Archer shirt that I’ve got all cut out and waiting to be assembled! I’m putting it off because I’m not confident of my existing machine’s ability to to the button holes – or maybe it’s my ability that’s lacking. I’d also like to try out those embroidery stitches on a baby quilt gift I’ve got planned.
I’m on an active wear kick so I’d make some leggings and a work out top! That’s a pretty cool-looking machine 🙂
I’d make a dress I’m sure of it (I make a lot of dresses). With this machine I’d do it while binge watching something on Netflix. This machine looks like fun!
I need to sew curtains for my new house 🙂
Such a pretty machine! I’d love to sew a very sharp button-down with it (an Archer maybe?) as it requires precision… the screen thingy could be useful !
Wow, really cool! I’m excited to see you sew some projects, and I really have been keen on seeing the stitches live. Having been burned by lower price point machines before, you really get suspicious!
I would try out those stretch stitches and sew a Victory Patterns Lola, sadly on my to sew list for too long.
My son and family had a house fire. Gone is the sewing machine I purchased for my four granddaughters…..so the first project would be new pillow cases with a fancy stitch along the openings.
Oh my goodness, what a pretty machine. I would use the machine to work on my Bettine dress, which is currently in the wearable muslin stage.
now that does look like a lovely machine. Got to love a bit of Gold now and then…
Hmm first project, it would be some clothing, possibly a Renfrew or some more underwear…
Hmm…first project…baby blanket for my baby due in April, then some skirts for my older daughter.
I would make a dress for my 5 year old grand daughter’s birthday using a beautiful voile fabric with Unicorn’s on it that I just ordered from Hawthorne Threads.
I think I will use I Japanese pattern with puff sleeves and a very flowing skirt and Empire waist. I love that style and my grand-daughter loves clothes.
This machine sounds amazing for the price and I am a vintage Bernina person.
I love all those stitch options! I would sew a moto jacket.
The first thing I’d sew would probably be a reversible By Hand London Anna dress. Apparently all of my family members decided to get married this year, so I’m thinking the only way to go is a maxi-length Anna and I have some magenta and black double gauze that would be perfect. Plus, if it’s reversible then I can wear it multiple times and no one will know.
I’ve always considered my love of sewing to be a beautiful gift. I want to pass that love along to my granddaughter and teach her to sew on this wonderful machine. Then hopefully, when she swoons over all its possibilities, pass it along to her, to use and cherish as her “first” machine. And….I will let her choose the first project she’d like to sew with it!
That’s lovely… It think I would try a quilt with embroidery to show off the lovely stitches!
Thanks for the giveaway
i think i would have to make the goldstream peacoat i have been promising my husband for ages but have been fearful of starting – now this might be a bit of an incentive.
Great giveaway! The first thing I would sew would be a summer dress out of some wax fabric I’ve been saving.
I am planning some slipcovers for my living room chairs. Would love a new machine to tackle them.
I’ve heard nice reviews about this machine. My first project would be a pair of pants 🙂
I would make a new black miniskirt.
Oh, my – I’ve been looking for a lower end machine to get my daughter started with. This looks like it would be great. Pillows and napkins with straight lines would be up first 🙂
Omg!!! 💟 with a spiegel sewing machine I want sew my first bra, my first tailored pants, my first jeans and my first coco chanel jacket 😄😄😄 84sehc@gmail.com or spop_84@hotmail.com.
Holy cow, that’s a beautiful machine with a lot of extras, especially for that price! If I won it I’d start sewing one of my vintage 1950’s dress patterns that I’m planning on sewing up this year.
Fun! I’d totally make a new pair of Ginger jeans 🙂 IYou have my email lady!
I need another machine like I need a hole in the head, but I love that you can apparently embroider letters with this – LOVE THAT!
And I totally forgot to say what I’d make – probably a new dress for the spring-like weather we’re having here in CA!
I would sew some adorable baby onesies for my newborn son. I am on maternity leave and have some extra time on my hands and I am also in the maker for a new machine
I was just shopping for sewing machines and saw some as high as 8k.
I would keep trying to make my husband a completely perfect dress shirt with the new machine. I’m not sure my current machine can make “perfect.”
Awesome giveaway! My first project would probably be new curtains or pillows. 🙂
I would finally make the red wool vest I have promised my husband for three years now 🙂
Ginger jeans for me! Hopefully this machine can produce some top-notch top stitching. Maybe I’ll even get fancy and do some embroidery on the back pockets- hmmm….
Whoops! Submitted without my email… Sorry
I think I’d put his machine to a trial by fire and sew some jeans with a thicker denim I have laying around. It looks so fancy!
I’ve been wanting to make a leather jacket for the longest time but my poor old machine just doesn’t have the penetration (stop sniggering)
I would make a pair of Sewaholic Thurlows since I seriously need new pants.
I would probably start with something simple, like a skirt, to get used to the machine.
Not entering. Just wanted to say what a good review. When this was first on the market a friend and I were emailing back and forth because we just didn’t get it.
I am a very, very rusty intermediate level sewer. I am also a mom now, which is a contrast to the last phase in my life when I sewed a lot (high school, which is also where I learned from a wonderful teacher.)
While I can’t wait to start sewing clothing for myself ASAP, realistically, I would ease myself back into things by making much easier projects at first. I’m thinking I would like to make some really cute bunting/flag things for my kids elementary school.
I am really excited about this machine. I read about it on another blog just before Christmas. And truthfully, if I don’t win this from you, I’m going to buy it for myself anyway. Talk about beauty on a budget!
Thank you to you, Walmart and Spiegel for this contest! And I really appreciate that you will continue to provide information/tutorials once the contest is over. I will be on the lookout for them, with my finger poised over the, “save” button!
Love the look of this machine! I have several projects I have been planning to get to after the current things I just started. Probably would be some mending projects and a pair of jeans are up next.
would like to sew a new pj, cause it`s getting real cold here these days.
bye from germany, annette
Oh my, she is so pretty! I would sew a pair of running tights. While watching Netflix!
I would sew a bag just to see what that baby can do!
I’d put it to the test sewing some jeans. I have doubts on my Janome’s ability to go over those thick thick seams. mahlica(at)gmail.com
Oh man! I would sew something to make use of all those fancy embroidery stitches, since my simple Singer has no such thing!
My first project would be a lovely wool and velvet cape with a tiny little shawl collar.
Wahoo!
My machine is usually set up for quilting, so I’d love to have a dedicated apparel-sewing machine! Been wanting to make a Grainline Linden sweatshirt.
How exciting! I would work on my first coat ever!!! I have my Clare coat pattern already printed, the fabric is ready for cutting, all the miscellaneous bits and bob are collected. Now I just need a new sewing machine 😉 and courage to tackle this project. And who knows… I may have it ready before end of winter.
The first project that I would complete would be something for my baby girl due in April!
The first thing I would sew is a grain line studio archer button up shirt! Taking a video of the top stitching would we really satisfying! Haha!
Awesome giveaway! I would sew up the Sewaholic Nicola dress. That pattern has been languishing in my stash for far too long.
Oh my goodness! I can think of about one hundred different things that I would love to sew, but the first would have to be a bunting for my brand new baby!
Yay! I’d sew a dress!
Ooohhh, love to get this! Awesome giveaway😍
I love how chic and sleek the gold and white looks! I also like the wide base – which makes me think this would be a good motivator to start the quilt I want to make for my bed (finally) – I think that would be my first project if I were lucky enough to win! 🙂
I think I would start with a dress by Colette Patterns. I am still new to sewing and I am trying to focus on creating wardrobe basics that I can wear everyday. Maybe someday I’ll be free of RTW clothes!
Without doubt, I would be making a Sewaholic Davie. I’ve made it before, but have some bicycle-print fabric that I think would look amazing as a Davie. The only problem would be pattern matching on such a narrow print – that’s why I think the camera would be so helpful to get me lining everything up correctly.
Looking to start sewing again now that my baby is out of the house (OK he’s 22 but still my baby) and would love to do some Roman shades for my kitchen.
The character of Daisy Grant (played by Patina Miller) on “Madam Secretary” has some occasional great wardrobe items. So I would: 1) get inspiration while watching episodes using the tablet holder; then 2) whip up a Daisy-style garment.
My first project would be a light wool cape for spring.
My first project would be a Cinema dress, by Lisette. It’s been in my lineup for at least six months, and I have fabric for three versions already!
This is very exciting! I think I’d make some new blouses and button-down shirts for work!
I have a very young friend who really wants to sew but has no machine. This would be ideal!
I would probably try to finally sew some ginger jeans (I have the fabric all cut and ready after a shorts muslin but need the courage to do it all, especially with my machines tension issues: ) )
Four Charlotte skirts from By Hand London. One for each season!
My first project would be a spring military jacket, I can never have enough of those.
The skies the limit with a gold machine, might even try jeans
First I want to say that I really enjoy your blog. I find so much inspiration seeing the things that you have sewn. Thank you for taking the time to blog. I am sewing with the machine that my parents bought me when I was 16 (about 40 years ago) I recently realized that the newer machines have all sorts of features that my White machine does not have. I have been wanting to buy a new machine to upgrade but can’t seem to justify the cost right now. This machine would be a great move into a machine with more options, stitches and so many things to explore. I would make myself a button down to try out the button hole feature and then play around with all the decorative stitches that my machine does not have. Thanks again for your blog and for the opportunity to put my name in for a chance at the Spiegel machine.
I really enjoyed your review. My first garment sewn on such a beauty would be something with lots o’ buttonholes like a shirt dress.
How exciting! I have my heart set on sewing the Closet Case Files Clare Coat, which will my first venture into coat-making! (redlocks81@gmail.com)
What an amazing giveaway – and open worldwide!! If I won, the first thing I’d sew would be a bra, my janome cannot do zigZag stitches very well – and cannot cope at all with plush elastic and power mesh. It drives me crazy!! Thanks for the giveaway!!
annie dot hnz at gmail dot com
Cute machine! I would make a summer dress first to try out the machine and then gift it to my daughter. She is just starting to sew and is using my 30 year old very basic janome.
Ooooo I’m officially wooed!! It looks great!!
I’ve been having a problem with my machine but I can’t afford a new one on account of a baby due in less than 5 weeks! I had plans for baby clothes and quilt that unfortunately isn’t happening.
So fingers and toes crossed 🙂
I have a ton of beautiful summer-weight fabric that I need to turn into dresses . .I would love to get started on those, while watching tons of Parks and Rec.
My first project would be another attempt to perfect a pants pattern.
Jeans, and use one of those fun stitches on the pockets!
Great giveaway! I’d sew a Gabriola skirt!
Super cute machine, and bitchin’ giveaway! Thanks a heap to you and Speigel!! Overalls. I have an overall overalls obsession lately. I have a ton of plaid-y/stripe-y suiting material… it makes a more formal ‘all. 😉 They’re cozy, cute, and perfect to wear whilst sewing.
I would make more Dashikis! I just learned how to make one by piecing different patterns. Now that I have a formula to male one, I’m ready to roll! Oh. I’ve been only sewing for a month. LOL. Self taught. Videos are a wonderful thing!
Looks a lovely machine. Think it would be a summer dress for me first
Ginger jeans! I’ve made my first pair and want to make more…preferably as the winner of the Spiegel! 😊 Thanks for the opportunity.
Looks amazing. Love it😍😍😍. I would finally start sewing my coat. It’s thick fury material. I’m sure this maschine is a winner so it would be a pleasure to work with it. Many thanks
New pjs for me me me – I made them for my three kids for Christmas, so now it’s my turn.
Sweet! The first thing I would make is a denim skirt for my granddaughter with embroidery around the hem. Love my granddaughters! Thanks
I am impressed with the Spiegel 60609. I think the first thing I will make is one of the Marcy Tilton patterns I have stashed for Spring.
Boulder holder first project for sure!
Thanks for the giveaway. I’d make my first patchwork quilt for a new family arrival (I’m usually a selfish sewer and only sew for me).
I too would sew Ginger Jeans using my Marcy Tilton blue paisley stretch denim, upon which
I cast admiring glances in the direction of my stash, but am too afraid to cut into! How silly of me. Thank you for an amazing giveaway!
Oh man I would totally make some fancy button ups with that sucker. Mmm automatic button holer.
This is the first machine I’ve seen that has a mobile phone holder, I love it! I would start by making my first ever Victoria blazer by By Hand London, I’ve just ordered the pattern and can’t wait to start. My email is cararbolkeax@hotmail.co.uk
Wow a!
Great giveaway! Like you I love a free machine. My first project would be some summer tops.
Wohoo! I would definitely sew a batwing shirt for myself. I already have the fabric but I’m missing a sewing machine. I really hope I will win 😄
I love the shelf for a mobile device – I’m always sewing with instructions on my iPad. My first project would be a pair of Gingers to see how this bad boy does on denim!
The first thing I’d sew? I’ve a to do list as long as my arm. I’d love to sew my daughters matching outfits as I’ve not done that yet, the youngest is a baby! I have an Oliver and S pattern ready. I’d also like to sew something for me… Belladone dress? Orla top? Moji trousers? I need to focus!
I would sew up a new dress for my summer vacation!
So great to see a quality lower budget machine!! No idea what is sew first… Maybe another Archer Button Up 😊
I’ve had some knit tops waiting and waiting to be sewn. I’d make those first!
What a stunning looking machine – love the gold accents. I’d sew some new project bags for my knitting!
Such a good review! Thank you. I am looking to get a new machine after having mine since I was 16 ( 11 years 😬 ) If given the chance to win this beauty of a machine the first thing I would make would be my black and turquoise mermaid scale swimsuit. I am off to Canada for the first time this year to see my bro and I need me a snazzy swimsuit. 😊
I would finish a quilt that I started eight years ago, but abandoned in frustration at the shortcomings of my current cheap sewing machine.
What a great looking machine. I would make a lingerie set. I’m thinking a Watson bra and panties.
What a great giveaway! I don’t have decorative stitches on my machine, so I would love to use those embroidery stitches to jazz up the edges of the Sewaholic Granville that I have planned.
Very impressed by this machine! The first project I would make would be an ikat Morris blazer!! That’s the next baby on my to-do list!
Thanks for the great giveaway!
Jeans, absolutely!
Oh it’s so pretty!
I’d sew a work dress in the turquoise tweed that I’ve had stashed for far too long.
A friend loaned me some 1970’s cape patterns so my first go on this lovely machine would be whipping up one of those! I’ve been sewing on my trusty thrift store machine for the past few years so this machine would be an awesome addition!
My first project would be a mini skirt in some gorgeous red and blue tartan fabric I’ve been saving. I’ve been very careful not to look at new sewing machines in case I got tempted so I didn’t even know a sewing machine could be internet connected!
My current machine hates jersey/knit fabrics so I’d sew the Coco pattern by Tilly and the Buttons minus the annoying skipped stitches! The machine looks beautiful 😊
First project in the que would be silk pillowcases!
Ooh! My first project would be to finish some jewelry bags I owe family from Christmas two years ago. I made and distributed the makeup bags, and told people the matching jewelry bags were coming… and then my sewing machine started to die. Oops. (Currently can’t even sew a straight line, and it’s not worth repairing. Need a new one.)
Oops, WordPress account was being weird. This goes with the comment form esvoss above. Just in case I win, the email address is attached to this comment!
Oh, yes! I’m looking into getting a new machine because my vintage Kenmore is having problems that are not resolved with cleaning and tune-up. My first project would be a linen Bellatrix blazer, because it’s been on my list but I’m afraid of my machine messing up something so lovely.
Dear Lladybird 🙂 Because my sewing machine is serious crap (seriously… while I sew it litteraly jumps around on the table ^^) I would be SO happy to win this BEAUTIFUL sewing machine. The first project I would sew on it, would be a dress for an upcoming confirmation of my cousin. 🙂 I would use some royal blue fabric and vintage lace I inherited from my great grandma (who was a seemstress). 🙂
Love, Lena 🙂
Thanks for hosting this giveaway! The first thing I’d sew is a sleeveless top, maybe with some of those embroidery stitches on the trim.
I would use this machine to start and finish the minoru jacket; my current machine I don’t believe would be able to handle this project. Thanks for this.
Wowow!!! This machine sounds amazing!! I’ve had my machine for over 10 years and desperately need a new one as its very very basic!! Id be so excited by the twin needle and it would be perfect for sewing up a pair of ginger jeans for spring. I would love this so much. Thanks for such a fab giveaway and for such a fab blog always full of ideas 😀 xx
The first thing I’d see would be a shirtdress (Colette Hawthorn most likely) to make use of the buttonhole stitches. I love my vintage machine so much but four step buttonholes are a pain!
Giveaway! Yes! This machine looks gorgeous!
I would make Papercut’s Ooh La Leggings. I have the pattern, but my old elna just doesn’t cut it when sewing with knits, so I have been waiting for a new machine.
Some new shirts and jackets for the office!!
Oh! I’m a Bernina gal, too, but my trusty workhorse has no embroidery stitches. I saw the other day someone posted a shirtdress on which she’d embroidered the collar instead of top stitching it. That’d be my first inspiration!
Wow, that looks like a great starter machine. I would love to win it, the first thing I would sew is a calls bomber jacket….thanks!
What a nice machine and a definite upgrade over mine that merely does straight stitch and zigzag! I may very well have to tackle some Thurlow trousers were I to win!
I would love to win a sturdy swing machine. My machine was stolen. I want to sew a shirt.
This is so exciting-I’d make an outfit for my friends’ little girls first birthday, it would be my first attempt at kids clothes!
Wow, what an awesome giveaway! I know exactly what you mean with not having the money for those fancy sewing machines. I’m still sewing on my grandma’s old sewing machine 😉 On a new machine I would probably sew a lot of Plaintains because my current machine doesn’t like knits and twin needles…
Oh my gosh! This would be so great! My bernina is on its last legs and I need a new machine while I save up for a new one! Hm…I would make…either a new pair of flared ginger jeans or a linen romper. Probably both. At the same time. Haha.
Wow, that does look like a nice machine! I’m impressed that that the outside is made of metal. What about the gears inside? Just wondrin’. Also neat that you can sew things like sleeves on it.
What would be the first thing I’d sew? Given all those features, I’d love to sew a button-down shirt! Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
So pretty! I would probably try out anything that’s knit since my featherweight doesn’t do well with them. Maybe some new leggings!
My first project would probably be a rayon challis Marthe top from Republique du Chiffon or maybe a Grainline Alder but shortened to a blouse. I need some new, pretty tops to wear to work! Thank you for the giveaway 🙂
I’ve got a stack of fabric my dog would love me to turn into beds for him!
Wow, Spiegal… who would have guessed?! Your review of the machine and excitement about partnering with them adds a lot of credibility to the quality of the 60609. Would love to try it out for myself by making a quilt for my newest grandbaby due in September!
What a beautiful machine! Thank you kindly for the review!
I would finish up the picnic quilt that I’m making for all of my friends to enjoy when we picnic during the cherry blossom festival in DC. The machine could help add some extra flair to the quilting part. 🙂
Ah, that would make watching Van Halen videos on YouTube so much easier. (Channeling David Lee Roth is suddenly vital to my sewing. Surprised me, too.) Want.
I’d use it to sew up all the lingerie I’ve got lined up! Boylston, Watson , and Marlbourough along with some vintage panty patterns and nighties! 😉
I love the phone holder, I Netflix all the time while sewing!! What a generous giveaway, I’d love to give this a go as I am pretty much a vintage Bernina fan.

Oh my – what a gorgeous machine – fingers crossed!!
Wow! What a great looking machine! I love the iPhone holder as I listen to podcasts as I sew and my machine makes lots of noise so I need it close and that’s just perfect! I think I would finally sew the Seamwork Akita pattern first. I’ve been holding onto the fabric and pattern for too long!
Wow! What a fantastic giveaway. I’d make a pencil case for my daughter – a good way for me to practice sewing a zip.
Wow! I would sew an outfit for my new grandson.
Ooh, what a nice looking machine! My focus right now is making more jeans so I’d definitely get this set up with topstitching thread and get cranking!
Oh, gosh… It could be probabily the best Valentine Gift ever!
However, I’ll sew for sure an evening gown, because my best-male-friend, which I knew since I was 2, is going to marry my classmate (yes, I was the Cupid who made them know and fall in love!).
Yay, everybody coming out of the woodwork — including me! 🙂 Honestly, the first thing I would do is download a bunch of stitches from the Play store, and each and every one across a piece of sturdy canvas, just for fun. Then I’d sew the embellushed canvas into a simple tote bag. Because I love experimenting and trying out all the options.
OOOOOOH! This machine is SO pretty! The first thing Id whip up on that bad boy is a Varsity Jacket with a bunch of words embroidered on it!!!! Lol! 😜👍🏼⚡️🏆🎈
Ahlix@yahoo.com
What a fantastic giveaway! I think I’d us the machine and its included quilting guides to make up a quilted jacket. here’s hoping!
I’m teaching my niece and her daughters to sew. We are working on doll clothes and aprons, the girls are also interested in learning to cook. My niece would like to make a knit top for herself and then some for the girls. I can imagine the hoots and hollers if I win! Two of us could be sewing at the same time!
My first baby is due on my birthday–July 23. I’m not putting any baby clothes on our registry because my goal is to spend $0 on clothes for the entire first year! Instead, I want to make baby’s frocks and leggings and onesies and all from old clothing and fabric.
If I’m going to make my goal, I better get started soon! Right now I have a very basic machine and sure would love an upgrade now that I’m sure sewing is the thing for me!
What a fantastic giveaway! If I won this, the first thing I’d sew would probably be a sundress for my niece (I promised my sister-in-law a handmade dress for her baby if she knit me fingerless gloves) followed by a sundress for myself.
Ooh I would love to win this! I’ve got a Deer and Doe Airelle blouse cut out and ready to sew, so I would use this to whip that up!
I tried and failed to make a grainline archer out of some rayon voile. I’d love to try again on this machine!
Wow, sewing technology has come so far. I love my darling Bernina, but he! Free sewing machine that has a WiFi Capabilities? Awesome! The first thing I would sew would be a classic, fitted button-down shirt. Thank you for a great opportunity!
I’d do Ginger Jeans – and use that stitch cam to get the fly topstitching curve just right 🙂
It’s so pretty!! 😻 The first thing I would sew is a new flowy maxi dress for myself, because I feel like I’m always sewing things for other people! I want to start working on my own wardrobe!
I would like to sew spring dresses for our local children at the homeless shelter. There’s nothing like a pretty dress on a little girl, and they won’t have that chance otherwise. (I can see them dancing around and twirling the skirts in my mind 🙂 I’ve never won a giveaway before, maybe this will be my lucky day! Thank you for making this opportunity available to us. Cheers, Jen
I’d love to see a few shots from the stitch cam. It’s impressive that such an affordable machine could be so sturdy. I’ve cut my teeth on an intro Brother model, which has held up for several years now, but it’s so flimsy feeling!
So many entries as expected, I would sew silver jeans for the test drive and see how it behaives with topsticthing thread.
I would make one of the new retro butterick dress patterns I just got. That machine looks amazing. Thanks for doing this giveaway!
Thank you for the giveaway! The first project I will make on the Spiegeleisen will be a new Lady Skater dress!
Thanks for the great review.
Mary
Yippee! Does anyone ever turn down a free sewing machine 😉 I have a skirt I would like to sew up – I love that this machine comes with a zipper foot, saves me from needing to go to my finicky machine that is the only machine I have with a zipper foot. Wow, maybe I should just buy a zipper foot for my workhorse instead of being so cheap… 🙂
What a fabulous machine! The fist thing I would make would be something that I could wear on an interview. That way if someone commented on my outfit I could say I made it and that would be a plus : ). Since I’m laid off I have a lot of time on my hands so I can finally make all those things I didn’t have the time for. Like everyone else – I’ve got the ginger jeans pattern.
Even tho it’s 28 degrees today, I’m thinking about my next bathing suit. That’s the first thing I would make!
I would start creating myself a spring wardrobe
The first thing I’d sew would probably be a home dec project. A duvet cover or curtains. I’m moving to a new bigger house next week, so those types of projects will be taking over my garment sewing time for a while!
Oooh! Love that white and gold styling.
I just went a little crazy on the 2016 Nani Iro collection, so my first project would probably be a nice floaty dress in some double gauze.
I’m learning to sew, and have started with skirts. If I was lucky enough to win I think a celebration with my first shirt would be in order!
Love the gold! I would love to try my hand at jeans!
Nice looking machine. I love the shelf for my phone or tablet. If I were to win this my first project would probably be a bra.
I’d sew anything with buttonholes. As much as I love my work horse Bernina, it makes some pretty average buttonholes.
Wow, this has some nice features! I would sew layettes for my soon to be born granddaughters.
I’d love to say that my first project would be something very fancy and beautiful, but since I’d be learning the machine it’d probably just be a pair of plain-Jane underwear 🙂 Quick, easy and functional.
My first project would have to be a corset… I made one on my current machine, a Viking 500 and sewed my finger… maybe the Spiegel 60609 will be a tad bit nicer to me…
I would sew myself some ginger jeans and some pieces for spring.
Love your blog and this giveaway! I would start on Spring tunics if I win!
I would love my own sewing machine! At the moment I uses my moms. 9 chances out of 10 I would make a summer dress, they are my favourite thing to make.
Honestly – I bought some soft stretch denim and another woven plaid to try my hand at a pair or two of slacks. (Have to call them slacks because it sounds a bit more elegant;) OR…Simplicity 1080…so many projects so little time!
The first project(s) I would use the Speigel for is to sew a Grainline Tiny Pocket Tank and Stowe bag with my 13 year old niece who is just learning to sew. It looks like the perfect machine for her to use as we work side by side. Love the phone shelf!
I have had the Lisette Portfolio dress/tunic for a while. I would love to make it in linen & use some of the decorative stitches on the neck, and the sleeve & bottom hems!
This is amazing! If I won this machine I would teach my little niece to sew her first item; a personalised tote bag. The needle camera function would be awesome to show her how the stitches are sewn because she always frightens me by getting too close to the needle “to get a better look”. This machine would be a wonderful tool to nurture her interest in sewing
What a fab-looking and sounding machine! Something like this is looong overdue in the sewing world. I have about a million things in my ufo pile, but finishing the kids beanbags would be project #1 🙂
Since my current machine doesn’t have any fancy, decorative stitches I would want my first project to allow me to experiment with those. Maybe I would make a cute new dress for my daughter or some new throw pillow covers.
Good timing my machine is dying. 🙂 I been looking for a good used machine in thrift stores. I do like the old vintage machines, but would be nice to win and new sewing machine. And this Spiegel looks and sounds amazing. I’m not sure what the first thing I would sew on it, as I love to sew everything…Clothing, crafts, furniture covers, purses/bags…and more. I’m really into making dolls, and I may start making them to help use out.
Good luck everyone!
I would LOVE this! My husband and I are renovating a farm house and there are so many sewing projects on the horizon. First and foremost on the list is proper window treatments! (Something simple, but instant gratification!).
Please, pretty please, let me sew a pretty Caroline party dress (from Mouse House Creations) on this machine for my beautiful granddaughter’s 2nd birthday!
I used to order from Spiegel all the time. Love the look and your comments about the machine. I would try to make my first jeans. Wish I could sew like you!
I would see my first archer!!
I would probably make another pair of jeans on it and add some of the fancy stitches to the pockets. I’ve never used a computerized machine (aside from in a sewing store) and the different stitches always intrigue me.
I have heard RAVE reviews about this machine. Would LOVE to tackle my Nettie dress on this machine!
That gold/white gets me everytime lol it’s so pretty!
My first project would be a spring dress with decorative stitches on the hem and neckline
This would be a huge upgrade from my hand-me-down Singer Touch n Sew from 1970-something! The first thing I would make would be some cute pjs for summer.
Oh this is fortuitous! I’ve been thinking how nice it would be to have a second machine to my beloved Pfaff, but I can’t justify the cost of a nice machine when it’s just for convenience and not because I neeeed one. I’d totally set this up my bedroom and whip up some cute bags I’ve had my eye on.
Wow, what an AMAZING giveaway. Thanks. My email is Alexa.c.duff@gmail.com
It is very lovely to look at! I think I’d finally tackle that bra I’ve been meaning to sew. I saw on Madalynne’s blog that she used them for her bra making class.
First project?! A quilt! I know, I know. It’s going to be difficult to wear in public, but I think I could pull it off. I’m completely in love with the Missouri Star Quilt Company!
I have been slowly gathering all the things I need to make my first me-made denim trousers with the Thurlow pattern, I’d love to have something better than my poor little $200 singer from highschool!
OH wow, WHAT a gorgeous machine. I think I’d have a Granville blouse skipping to the top of my sewing queue as the hypothetical inaugural project on this baby.
Thanks for all of the insight on this machine! If I won a Spiegel 60609, the first project I’d make with it would be Ginger jeans, pink denim. 🙂
Wow it’s such a beaut! I’ve never heard of Spiegel before, will definitely check them out now!! I think I’d make my first cambie on it!! My email address is craftysooze (at) gmail (dot) com
I am dying to make a Clare Coat. I have the wool and I better get on it since its 71 degrees today!
Seems like a lovely machine! I work on an older (read: 20 yrs at least), non-computerized machine, from Huskqvarna, and am happy with it. But, then again, I’ve never used a more modern machine. My first project would be part of building my me-made spring/summer wardrobe – so it would be a dress. The Amelia dress from Green Bee or another Sureau from Deer and Doe. Love your blog, you are an inspiration! :0)
Pretty! I’d sew Sew Over It’s Ultimate Pencil Skirt!
I am have been holding on to some pink poodle fabric to make some Fifi pajamas and a matching lounge robe. I would love to win this beauty!
Would definitely run up another pair of Calvin Kleins from Vogue 2442 – itching to give some of those embroidery stitches a go for the pockets and the topstitching!
Lovely machine! I’d sew a Tilly and the Buttons dress!
This is so exciting! I was the lucky winner of Madalynne’s Spiegel giveaway, and I’m eager to see what you think of the machine. I’ve barely tried mine out, as I’ve been in the middle of a few projects when I received the new machine, and wanted to continue on my current Singer to wrap things up, but I’m planning to set aside some time to acquaint myself. It’s such a pretty machine! I’m looking forward to seeing more projects you make with it, and I’ll try to post a review soon, too. 🙂
Nice machine! As the supply officer for our local Sea Cadet unit I would use the machine to alter cadet uniforms and sew patches. Our cadets (and their parents) would be most appreciative:)
I would work on some sweet little girl dresses for my daughter!
My first project would absolutely be a pretty Delphine skirt for work. But my second project would be ludicrous faux leather leggings that I would attempt to add quilted knee patches to, because I can only do sensible grown up for very short bursts.
How cool! I have a couple of vintage straight stitch machines that are great for quilts and simple woven garments, but I’d love something with more stitch options as well as buttonhole capability so I can start sewing more garments. I’d probably sew something simple on this at first like a sorbetto tank just to get a feel for it.
My birthday is the 14th, so winning this would be an amazing gift! 😀
My plans would be to sew some Jamie Jeans. I’ve been sitting on the pattern for almost a year now. Wouldn’t a new sewing machine be the perfect reason to try a new pattern?
First run would be a little girl’s blue wool winter coat. :0)
My first project would be a dress for the tail end of summer with some cool embroidery around the skirt or on the bodice.
I’ve been interested in this machine since it was featured on Madalynne’s blog- I’ve been really into the idea of sewing lingerie between her stuff and your recent bra sewing, so I’d probably make my first Watson bra as a first project!
Leggings! I’ve been wanting to sew some for my daughters for a while now but have been afraid my machine will just eat the fabric and be spiteful and bad tempered as always. Also I do a lot of sewing from tutorials so how cool would it be to have it right on the machine.
I would make a baby nappy bag for my new grandchild, due in July, then probable give the machine to my daughter if I won it.
Wow, so excited. I would make a pair of pants I’ve been planning for a while. It would be my inspiration.
My brother is just not interested in having proper tension or do twin needle without messing up. It makes me sad. I’ve been looking for a replacement and this might just fit the bill.
I think my first project on a new machine would have to be a nautical blazer for me. I’ve had the fabric stashed away for ages, and I’ve finally reached my target weight so it’s time to stop the diet and sew. Time to tackle a bit of speed-tailoring. I’d love to win a fancy machine like this!
This might be my next machine. My brother is just such a pain!
I’ve been doing “learn to sew” sessions at my house. One of my sewing friends is talented, super-enthusiastic, and dying for a sewing machine of her own. I would love to be able to give her one!
Oh My!!! pretty and functional?! sounds awesome! I’d make a Wren dress… been procrastinating on that for too long 🙂 many thanks!
Awesome, thanks for the giveaway! I would make a slip with horded silk. My machine chomps lightweight fabrics.
What a great giveaway!!! I want to sew a coat.
I’d finish my woolen skirt that’s been in progress for months now. My poor Brother is on it’s last legs and my vintage Singer can only make stitches about 1/4″ wide.
I would see a summer dress with some embroidery on the bodice or skirt.
I’d probably start with something from Lotta’s new book! Acadialee@gmail.com
wow! what a generous giveaway! Thank you for hosing! I would sew all of the knits: t shirts, underwear, leggings! My current stretch stitch situation is not good.
*hosting
Thanks for the giveaway. I am just getting back to sewing after 5 year hiatus 😦 I would start simple with a totebag.
New Sure Fit Designs dresses!
Awesome giveaway! I’d start with a bang and sew my first pair of Ginger Jeans!
I’m designing my own wedding dress! This upgrade from my hobby machine would be amazing!!! I love all those embroidery stitches. Thanks for such an awesome giveaway!
I woild make pajama pants, probably from the Closet Case Files Carolyn pattern.
I would sew a white denim summer dress! White clothes have become a need for me…
That is a lovely looking machine and thanks for your review. I would make a coco t-shirt ready for spring.
It’s very pretty! And I can’t believe the price for all those computerised features and pretty stitches! I’d use it a a second machine for topstitching when making jeans.
katie@whatkatiedoes.net
Wow, I so appreciate the world-wide bit, as I am in Canada. I would love to play around with th embroidery stitches, and enjoy the web connectivity. Amazing machine, good on Speigel for creating such an innovative product at such a great price point. I would make my summer tunic tops as a first project. Thank you, and Speigel for the giveaway!
oh – so much to choose from – I would probably set this up in my dining area so I could work whenever I wanted and work on the Project Linus quilts I need to finish,
Holy Cow, It’s a long way to the bottom….. I would love to have this machine at the side of my current machine – I would use it for basting and top stitching so that I wouldn’t have to change my threads all the time. I would start with another Camas blouse. hkdawson @ gmail . com
I would like to try to make a Cashmerette Appleton wrap dress.
A very very nice sewing machine.
That is my first time on your blog and i sure come back !
Very very nice.
The first thing I would make is tailored jacket. I have been teaching my niece how to sew. We will have our own side by side sew along.
Yes, please, I need a machine right now! I’ve been using my mom’s lovely, old Pfaff, but she just reclaimed it to get back into quilting. The first thing I would sew is my next project, a wearable muslin of the BHL Kim bodice. I’ll pair it with my Hollyburn skirt as a two-piece setacular. Thanks!!!!
First quilt! Has to be weight of love by Libs Elliot – keeping it all valentines
That is indeed a pretty machine! I can ALWAYS use another machine. I especially like ones that have extra fancy stitches. One thing my Bernina 350PE does not have is a 3 step zig zag. If this one has a 3 step zig zag then I’d be sure to give it a go for some lingerie sewing. I’m thinking Watson and some undies.
Almost a year ago, I bought a late 70’s small double wide mobile home and I’ve been working on remodeling/fixing it up since. One thing I really, really need is window coverings and I’ve been eyeing roller blinds and roman shades — particularly roman shades (love them!). I’m on the hunt for fabrics (if you know of any sites that would be good, please share!) and would use this machine to start on my window projects. I’m bookmarking this machine so hopefully I can go see one in person. Thanks and hope your winter is not too wintry 🙂
bethnegrey@gmail.com
That Spiegel desperately wants to make me a costume for my first aerial silks photoshoot!
First project: Much need nightgowns for my growing girls. To be honest, I would probably give this machine to my 8 year old. She has been hankering for her own sewing machine- and she would love the camera and stitches available.
I am so glad you posted about this machine! I have recently been on the look out for a budget friendly sewing machine since recent circumstances have left me without one. I’m seriously looking into the Singer 9906, but this looks like it might be a decent alternative. Thank you for offering this giveaway, Lauren!
Considering I sew with a $59 Black Friday special Singer I would love to have a machine like this! First thing I would sew? Probably a summer dress.
Lauren, thanks so much for this detailed review. I’m a newer sewist and really benefit from you and other experienced bloggers who take the time to walk through details.
If I won this machine, I’d use it to make my suit for a spring wedding where I’ll be the groomsman for one of my best friends for nearly two decades. This suit will be a lot of first for me — first time using truly high-end materials (Italian suiting wool, mmmmmm), first involved tailoring project, first time sewing for an event with a hard deadline. My inability to find a suit with an androgynous dapper style and anywhere near enough boob room was one of the things that led me to learn to sew in the first place. If I can do this justice, it’ll be one of the first times I’ve gotten to go to a formal event looking the way I look to myself in my mind. I’m excited and also a bit terrified, and nearly all of my sewing for the next four months will be a series of carefully planned projects to develop through the skills I’ll need to do it justice.
Email: jakubowiczish (at) gmail.
On such a marvelous machine as the Spiegel, my first project would be Gertie’s slip and panties, Butterick 6031. My current machine does not have adjustable presser foot pressure. This makes sewing jersey knits, slinky knits and lace near impossible.
I think that Spiegel wants to make my two year old granddaughter a sweet summer dress!
I would love to have this machine. The first thing I would make is matching skirts for my Granddaughters using some of those fancy stitches.
Impressive machine–who would have thought Speigel? I would sew a tunic top from Sew Serendipity with some fabric I purchased on Kauai this past fall. mary.howard@jc28.org
Wow, that looks like such a good machine! My next big project is my wedding dress so I think I’d go for that first – looks a bit more reliable than my current machine.
I think I would use it to start the quilt I keep intending to make my mother!
myohsewvintagelife@gmail.com
Gosh — I’m amazed at all the high-tech aspects! Downloading stitches on iTunes? A USB port? A WiFi channel and a stitch cam? What the what??? My head would explode — but in a good way. I think back to the first machine I bought, which was an “inexpensive” beginner’s machine (I couldn’t believe the cost), and it was nothing like this. Look at what 20 years of technological development will do. I’d love to have this machine. I think my first project would be fabric roses for my Mom. I saw this pattern and it looks doable (I’m not that great at sewing); plus my Dad is allergic to roses so my Mom never receives roses. Thanks for the review.
Love the color of this machine! I’d use it for my first attempt at sewing some underwear – some fancy knickers I think! 🙂
I’ve been wanting to try my hand on sewing jeans! With Spiegel’s metal body, I think it would handle jean sewing. And the holder for a phone would make following the Ginger sew-a-along very convenient! Thanks for the Spiegel 60609 review and opportunity to get a new machine!
I’m impressed that they are so forward thinking, by integrating wifi and a USB port. Some of the older, standard manufacturers should sit up and take notice, because I would love something like that. I guess the first thing I would sew on the Spiegel would be a shirt I started working on last year … I mean, it’s a super simple thing, so why haven’t I finished it? Probably because my other machine is my quilting baby. I just have a hard time setting it up for clothing when I walk into my sewing room and immediately think of quilting because that’s what I do on that machine. Know what I mean?
I would probably use it to sew a pillow case or pajama shorts while teaching a sewing class.
I have been eyeing those machines at another bra sewist blogg, so excited to hear how great it is. Now to find a way to open a sewing/tea/coffee shop where we could rent time on them!!
While I have an emotional attachment to my Vikings….. Heck yes I’d love this machine!!! 2016 has been very kind to me so far, so if I happen to win….. And you don’t hear back right away…. it’s not because I’m not checking my email, it’s cause I’m lost in Baja on a surf trip. Promise to check my email when I return 🙂
I’m on an extended sewing hiatus while traveling for work, and dreaming of the kimono I’ll sew and then lounge around in as soon as the job is over!
Looks like a pretty solid choice for the price point and for a beginner. I would probably break her in with a basic baby quilt but maybe one of the brindille and twig patterns I’ve been eyeing.
I’d try my hand at a swoon bag.
I would love this machine! Great Giveaway! I still would love to buy that Machine! it looks So fancy! I hate machines that look cheap. Thank God, I am not the only one who watches Tv while sewing.
Great contest, I would sew some reusable bags.
So much closer to my price range then anything else I’ve seen reviewed! Shame there’s no Walmart in New Zealand. I’d be sewing all the knits – my current machine doesn’t have a zigzag (a very very old elna)
Oh man, I would the love to sew a Wren dress. I love my 80s Dressmaker, but it can’t use a twin needle (!) and also hates knit fabrics. Woe!
Wow, this is so cool! Will make a pair of navy, khaki-weight cotton shorts for spring/summer golf.
I’d love to try sewing some jeans on that Spiegel!
That is very cool. I’ve been planning to see some Victorian era trousers and several sets of curtains, but I think I would end up dropping them both in favour of something that used embroidery stitches!
The first thing I would make is a shift dress in something bright and spring-like (not that it is anywhere near spring weather here) or a dress for my 4 year old. She’s always begging for a rainbow of dresses 😄
Wow, this would be a real upgrade for me (my first ever sewing machine is the Ikea one…)! My kids have been begging for ninja costumes for weeks, so that would probably be the first project on my list
Oooh a graduation dress would be the first thing I’d use it for!!!
Sounds like an amazing machine for the price point! I certainly looks and operates VERY similarly to machines that cost a LOT more! I would make my Camas blouse (Thread Theory) next. And I would try out a few of those fancy stitches where the bodice meets the body of the blouse just for fun. Great idea to showcase their machine on your blog and of course this free offer is generous too 🙂
My first project would be a grainline moss skirt.
My husband is going on a business trip to the US for 3 weeks. I ordered the Cascade Duffle Coat from Grainline Studio and I planned to spend some quality time with my sewing machine. It would be much more exciting to do it with this Spiegel. Your review made me curious.
We have a special event coming up in March. I would make a dress for my daughter. Hope I win this beauty.
Wow! What a pretty machine! Seems it will be a good little workhorse, too. I especially like seeing the ease in which it handled that delicate Liberty fabric.
Were this beauty to come and live with me (please!!), the first things I would make are a pair of wool crepe trousers with Simplicity 3688 and a printed crepe drape necked blouse. *sigh* The perfect Phryne Fisher outfit.
Good luck, everyone!
Sarah
rhinestonesandtelephones@gmail.com
Awesome giveaway! Great timing too, since it’s my birthday today. haha. First thing I would make is the portside travel set cause I was gifted the pattern for my birthday and have been wanting to make the set eversince I saw them on your blog!
Good luck to everyone! I’m sure this beautiful machine will make some one super happy 🙂
I remember Spiegel commercials back in the eighties, early nineties? Never thought they’d make sewing machines! I love the tablet holder. The first thing I would sew is a set of bow ties and neckties for my sons. They’ve been asking for a while and my machine is dying a slow sad death 😦 Thanks for the chance!
Ahhh My first project would be to tackle the repairs to my favorite dress, the zipper came off! I have a janome that I LOVE when it is working… but unfortunately it is broken most of the time
Haven’t been able to fix it this last time and finally coming around to the fact that I might need a new machine!
What a gorgeous machine! I’d definitely be more likely to sew more often, as I would want it sitting out just to look at. Currently I stash my machine in a closet while not in use, which means that things pile up until I get around to setting it all back up. The first thing I would make isn’t anything exciting: a dust cover for the generator out in the barn. I’ve been meaning to get around to that since before Christmas, but it still hasn’t happened.
What a pretty machine! I would finally quilt and bind a pretty quilt top that’s been languishing for some time 🙂
I would sew a jacket with that gorgeous machine!!!!
The new Almada Robe from Seamwork! Those embroidery stitches look like they would be really cool details!
A thank you gift ;).
I’ve only been seriously sewing for less than a year on an old brother that my grandmother gave me. I’ve been working on my first coat, so realistically if I got a new machine I’d probably finish that up with it…assuming I don’t throw it in the trash in frustration first. But if we are talking new projects, I’d say a new gray raincoat for spring. I already have the fabric and two patterns to choose from:
http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/fur-lined-parka-012016
http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/trench-coat-122011
Such a great giveaway – can’t wait to see who the lucky winner is!
I would definitely sew myself some jeans on that beautiful baby!
Awesome giveaway. As much as I would like to try out those fancy embroidery stitches that my 1940s Singer 201K can only dream of, I suppose my first project ought go be the trousers I promised my dad about a year ago.
Nice looking machine! I think I’d work on some summer clothes, since it’s already getting warm here in Vegas!
I would have to try out the embroidery stitches first, so probably a basic skirt with embroidery along the hem and side and pocket seams
I would knock out a whole series of lark and plantain tees! My current machine has to be hacked to accommodate a second spool of thread for a double needle and it’s stretch stitch stinks. I would love an upgrade so I can love all the knits.
A long taffeta skirt for a Victorian fancy dress 40th is next on my sewing list!
Oooh…this machine looks really nice! And the giveaway is open to international readers, too! If I got my hands on this Spiegel, I’d definitely want to use some of those pretty decorative stitches. I’m imagining a 40s-sh blouse with some embroidery around the yoke.
I think the first project I would make is a pair of ginger jeans! This machine looks so awesome! Thanks for the give away!
I would make a skirt, I think! I haven’t sewn really since starting grad school, and not I want to get back into it again.
What a gorgeous retro machine ! I think I would whip up some delicate silk satin knickers with some pretty embroidery stitches as decoration for good measure … Well Valentine’s Day is just around the corner !
I sew need that machine! It would reside at my cabin in the woods so that I would not have to tug my beastly Bernina out there any longer, especially now that I know the handle could actually break and the one on this Spiegel would not! I still have an old Spiegle charge card from days gone by, wonder if I could buy all of those extra feet for it? Thanks for telling me about the machine, I look forward to hearing more about it!
The first thing I would make it a button up shirt so I could play with makin button holes! Thank yo so much for the giveaway
If I win this machine I’ll try my hand at quilting a small project finally!
I imagine my chances of winning are slim, but not as slim as they’d be if I don’t enter!! i’d love to make Janet Preys Express jacket as there’s lots of top stitching and would feel like sewing royalty if I had 2 machines so didn’t have to be swapping threads every 2 minutes!! 🙂
Wow. Cool machine.
OMG I love gold accents!!! I would make the Cypress Cape from Sewaholic Patterns. I just love the look!!
Sounds like a decent machine. I’ve been looking for something to recommend for beginners. I would finally buy a bra kit and would learn to make bras.
Beautiful, sleek looking machine. Stitch quality looks nice. First project would be a tailored shirt for my husband.
I would to finally make a Cordova jacket! And lots of cute stuff for my son.
What a pretty machine, love the phone shelf! Mine always gets lost when sewing. It is super hot here in the Southern Hemisphere and I would love to try this machine out with a pair of work-suitable linen shorts (pattern to be located). Also looking ahead to autumn/winter sewing….

Oh, man, she looks like a real beauty! I own a vintage Pfaff which sews beautifully and I just LOVE the IDT but I’d probably use the Spiegel to sew something that is a bit of drag on the Pfaff: buttonholes! It only does 4-step-buttonholes and it’s a little tricky to get them all even on a button-down shirt and not make them all different lengths, and mess with my OCD lol. So a whole army of button-down shirts is probably the road I would go! 🙂
I’d sew baby items for a nursery, including crib skirt, crib sheets, and blankets.
Open worldwide? Whaaaat? I’d probably make a shirt dress first. I actually really like my sewing machine (a very basic brother), only sewing buttonholes on it annoys me so. much.
This looks like a wonderful machine. I would make a dress from a lovely piece of scuba knit (Peacock print) that I purchased last fall from Mood Fabrics. I also have a jacket pattern I would love to sew in a fine wale corduroy. That buttonhole feature looks very tempting.
All of the technology on this machine is exciting. I’d use it to make skirts for my first grown-up job (which starts on the 15th!). I would learn to embroider and use the embroidery stitches to make my homemade pieces look high-quality.
I would make my gazillionth Archer shirt with a green plaid fabric I bought in Tokyo last year.
I’m thinking my first project on a brand spanking new Spiegel would be a quilt for my new niece/nephew to be. Can’t resist cute baby stuffs!!
The machine looks very stylish! I think I would give it some hard stuff – jeans!
Oh my, it looks beautiful! I’d be sewing some button front frocks, because I’ll be needing front access for the next year or so. My beloved Bernina 830 is THE BEST MACHINE EVER, but alas, it does not sew very neat or uniform buttonholes (not when I’m behind it anyway). The Spiegel would be a much needed addition to my sewing family!
I have just started cutting out the pattern for a Bombshell dress and a new machine would be amazing help since there is a lot of detail and precision in it. I remember finding your blog some years ago because you wrote about such a dress. You have an amazing blog:)
This Spiegel machine would be perfect for teaching my granddaughter to sew. A perfect beginning project would be a pillowcase using some of the decorative stitches for the hem decoration, next would be pajamas and the list grows, Thank you for the opportunity
Spiegel is still around!?! I used to love their catalog and bought frequently from it. I remember one of my favorite dresses was from there. Sounds like a great machine for my daughter who wants to get started sewing.
I’d give it to my little sis for her birthday…she has a basic machine and does some awesome stuff with it so I’d love to see what she could rock out with a little more advanced machine!!
I am currently making cycling gear for my husband and I – with an emphasis on bright and visible, with a side order of fits our tall frames. If I won this beauty, I’d probably start with cycling jerseys, using fun patterned fabric from spoonflower (red with black dinosaurs for hubby, pop art poster panels for me!
And I’d give my Janome to my daughter.
I would see the shirt I’ve been promising my husband since about 2013 oops!
It is a beautiful looking machine.
Katie
Hardly an exciting make, but the first thing I’d sew would be an early ’90s Vogue pattern skirt. It’s nothing spectacular, but it does have a yoke and then it flares nicely.
I would sew a prom dress for my granddaughter!
Jeans! My litmus test for a good machine is jeans, then maybe something in voile to really put it through its paces. ;-).
I’d make a Linden sweater – nice and cozy for winter!
This is such a cool machine! I would sew some lovely spring tops in cotton lawn without them getting chomped up by my rubbish old machine.
This isn’t a brand I’ve heard of in the Germany so it’s interesting to find out what else is out there. If I won I would definitely start with some button downs and summer dresses! To be honest it’s kind of exciting to see them finally use some of the tech advances you see in phones etc, in a sewing machine!
My next sewing project is a coat, why non try the Spiegel machine?
My first project, if I should be fortunate to be the lucky winner, would be to make the “Very” Easy Vogue sort-of Diane V.F. look alike Pattern V8379…using a beautiful pastelish colors jersey knit print…This project has been on my shelf waiting for me to return to my beloved sewing that has been on recess since my husband of 30 years dumped me last year…I am almost finished with my personal pity-party and ready to pick-up those scissors (and yes, I am trying to appeal to your possibly feeling sorry for me!)
Oh wow! This machine sounds so great! I do have one of the more “budget-friendly” machines myself and although it’s okay, overall, I do find myself wishing it had a metal base. The plastic makes me apprehensive. Too apprehensive to try sewing jeans and that’s a dream project — so if I happened to be the lucky winner of this giveaway, I’d go for jeans. Most likely Ginger jeans. You’ve sewn up some gorgeous ones, Lauren!
I would make a belated Valentines present for myself to go with this beautiful belated Valentines sewing machine – a ruby red silk satin nightdress. Sorry, did I say it was for me? I meant of course it’s for my husband… 🙂
I would sew up some comfy knit tops that would work with nursing my daughter. I don’t have enough of those tops, and they’re very expensive. Just slap the maternity label on something and the price skyrockets.
I would use it to make charity quilts for orphaned children and elderly women for my church’s adopted village in Guatemala.
I would sew some hooded bath towels for babies!
Definitely more jeans – because then I’d have two machines and wouldn’t have to keep switching threads for topstitching!
I was looking for a heavy duty sewing machine 😀 the Spiegel machine looks awesome. My first project on this would be a cotton dress for my Mother. I use the e-mail id towardslight@live.com
Looking forward to your posts on sewing 🙂
Oh man sounds like fun! I love that they have taken into account some modern world needs(aka cell phone shelf!). The metal frame sounds lovely too! I would probably sew my husband a pair of jeans or two…that’s been on the list for a while!
I would see new summer dresses!
Looks like a great machine! I think I’d have to try making a zip pouch, since I make a ton of them!
I would start with making a dress for myself. And then I would see Christmas presents for the whole family.
Oh wow! This sounds like the perfect machine for my 7-year-old daughter, who is very keen to start making clothes for herself. I do have a Bernina (albeit an aging one), but it would be lovely to be able to sit together. With three younger siblings the time she gets to spend alone with me is limited, and it would be wonderful if we could sit together and sew! ❤
I’d make a fancy granville with byou-ti-ful buttonholes. You rock, Lauren!!
I’d love to try the Spiegel for sewing a blouse, probably a Sewaholic Granville.
The first project I would try on this machine if I was the lucky winner would be a new sorbetto top (with a few tweaks after my first versions that could be a tiny better fitted) !
I would love to make a new one for the summer!
What would I sew first!! Ginger Jeans. My 25 year old machine has been all over the country with the military and is about to bite it. Even after servicing I don’t trust it with heavy denim. I don’t do a lot of fancy sewing, but I need a good basic machine.
What a great sewing machine! I’d probably sew something simple as my first project (maybe a cotton tank?) so I could get used to the machine and play around with some decorative stitching.
What a beautiful machine! I love de phone/tablet doc and that retro vibe!
And I am so glad that it is an international give away, since I live in Spain. The first thing I would sew is a knit dress. Currently I only own a straight stitch machine and I want to remake a knit dress that belonged to my mom. I can already picture my cat, Mary Margaret, playing with the threat while I sew 🙂
I’m not that experienced with patterns yet, but am hoping to be able to refashion the dozens of thrift store finds collecting dust in my closet! With this machine I would attempt more challenging sewing endeavors that my current, second hand sewing machine just will not work on. Specifically I have a 1960’s orange plaid dress that I would love to make some changes on to make it wearable!
My first project would be a silky slip. I’m a sucker for nice undergarments.
I have a sofa to re-upholster, that would be my first test for the Spiegel!
Thank you for the great review!! To be honest I would also use the phone stand to watch Netflix!! The first project I would make would be the Pocket Full of Posies dress, for spring!!
I would sew a drndl with all that fancy embroidery stitching – even a whole row of the alphbet! (too much – nah!)
Wow. That seems great. The first thing I would sew is my latest obsession: the geranium dress for babies!! Everyone around me is having little girls and those decorative stitches would look great on child clothing!!
Pam
I have a whole bunch of projects pending to be sewn! For starters I want to sew a new pair of white gingers, so pick me, pick me LOL
I would go crazy with those fun decorative stitches (my current machine has VERY limited stitch options) and then make a simple frock. The Schoolhouse Tunic is my go to for something super easy frock!
I love your posts and always check my email inbox for the next one. I love how you write it all up in a rather friendly manner.
Thank you for this post. I am in the market for making a troupe’s Ceili dresses, after finishing my first ever Irish dance competition dress only last week ( I only found out there are such dresses last November) and would love the Spiegel 60609 to get them done. So many stitches… My hands are itching to be given the opportunity to try them all out. Won’t that be awesome 😀 But, only time will tell.
I would make something basic, I’m just a beginner. I guess next up is a dress for my stepdaughter.
The machine seems pretty nice! The first project I would work on would be a knit dress… Moneta, specifically 🙂
My first project would be another pair of Ginger Jeans!! Would love to be able to see them with ease without changing my current machine’s thread every 6minutes… although I have a feeling Netflix in the phone holder would be a little distracting whilst perfecting my top stitching!! The fancy stitch types could be used to create some interesting features instead of standard twin-needle top stitching!! Exciting giveaway 🙂
Great giveaway!!
Ah, apparently I’m anonymous?! Shouldn’t be the case as I’m logged in
just incase, my email address (to go with the above comment) is sheisthewildyouth@gmail.com 🙂
I’d try out the stretch stitches on some swimwear!
Thanks so much for the giveaway!!!! I have been meaning to sew some athletic wear.
What a gorgeous machine i like that it isn’t plastic it will last a long time. My first project would be a pair of pants for mr mom mossaenda@hotmail..com
Lovely! I would make a Camberset dress (stokesrenee@gmail.com)
Great gìveaway! The first thing ai would sew would be a cropped jacket.
I have been drooling over this machine for a few months already…why is not available in the UK?! I would start with an Anna dress for a wedding I have coming up!
That machine looks kind of 80s fabulous. I’d like to try making my first lady skater!
I’ve been drooling over this machine for a few months now…please start selling them in the UK Spiegel! I would start with an Anna dress for a wedding I have coming up!
The machine is very beautiful. And so many different zigzag stitches!
I’m in the middle of cutting my first pair of Birkin Flares, so probably this will be my first project, sewed, if I win.
I think I’d finally sew up my first pair of jeans… Finally! Here’s hoping 🙂
first project? Hmmmm. Maybe that unpieced quilt that’s been sitting in a corner, oh so lonely, for the past decade. Yep, that’d be it!
Now that I am retired, I have the time to go back to sewing. Unfortunately my machine like myself has become vintage. I would love the opportunity to sew on the new computerized machines & try all the bells and whistles you have described above. I would use this machine to meet the challenge of fitting a 60’s body in 2016 style.
I’ve been hording some lovely pink wool … a fitted princess seam shift with a matching long coat … that’s what I’m making. With embroidery accents. I’ve been pricing machines the past two months. I’m also a die-hard Pfaff girl with strong loyalties, but I’m taking your comments seriously. I’m finding plastic hard to deal with when I’ve been used to a good metal workhorse machine for all these years.
Wow, looks like a fun machine! I think I would make some pillows and home dec accessories. They might be a great plain slate for some of those decorative stitches.
What a fantastic looking sewing machine, so art deco, love the retro look.
I would make a lovely Colette patterns dress, maybe Peony. Or be brave and
try a knit dress.
I would make a dress for my cousins wedding at the end of next month with some beautiful pink silk I’ve been saving for years!
I’ve been eyeing that machine for a while, especially with the embroidery stitches! I got some teal floral cotton voile coming my way and I’m thinking a Simplicity 1803 with it and have it have decorative lining
I’d make some jeans! My cheap sewing machine can’t handle all the layers of denim and I’d love a new machine!
