In my wardrobe, I have a very small selection of RTW clothing that is quickly dwindling to nothing. Out of those pieces, the majority of them are lightweight knit cardigans. You know the kind I’m talking about – sewn, rather than knitted, lightweight enough to throw in a purse, wearable for all seasons (I dunno about y’all, but I wear my cardigans throughout the summer – air conditioning is tooooo cold for me!). As I’m quickly replacing all my clothes with handmades, the one major hole – other than undergarments (which I’m working on!) – has been those damn cardigans. I love knitting cardigans, don’t get me wrong – but those take loads of time, not to mention even the lightest fingering weight yarn can’t compete with how lightweight a knit fabric is, you know?
I’ve been on the lookout for a good cardigan pattern – not even really for the pattern itself, but rather, the instructions. Y’all, the one time I tried to sew button holes on a knit, it ended up being slightly traumatizing. Then there was that time recently that I tried to use an old RTW cardigan to copy into a handmade one (cutting it apart to use as a pattern – same concept as how I made my striped hoodie). Spoiler alert: it didn’t work out at all. Clearly I can’t hack this on my own. I need someone else to do it for me.
Also, that cardigan I chopped up? As much as it wasn’t really my favorite – it was the one grey cardigan that went with basically everything. And here it was, chopped up into little bits and, uh, I kinda needed it back.
Anyway, all that being said – right about the time I realized I was making a huge mistake (chopped up cardigan and all), Kat emailed me, saying she’d just launched her new pattern company, Muse Patterns, and would I like to try and review the Jenna Cardi?
UM. YES.
HI GUYS, LOOK, DREAM CARDI PATTERN RIGHT OVER HERE.
The Jenna Cardi comes with a few different options, so you mix and match to create the cardigan of your dreams (I’m not the only one who dreams about cardigans, am I?). You can choose a cropped or waist length version, sleeves ranging from full, to three quarter, to short, and then there’s also an option to include a beautiful curved yoke detail.
I’m a boring person with no imagination when it comes to wardrobe basics, so I chose something plain and simple for my first hurrah – cropped length, long sleeves. The thing about this cardigan that makes it so special, though (I mean, other than the fact that I SEWED IT MYSELF yaaaay for not buying RTW!), is the fabric I used! HOMEGIRL GOT HER HANDS ON SOME MERINO WOOL.
Are we all still freaking out about merino wool or has that ship sailed? Whatever, *I’m* still freaking out over it! Ever since Katie started pushing it on me like an extraordinarily effective drug, I have been trying in vain to locate a US source. That stuff isn’t cheap, even in the best of times – and to ship it all the way from NZ obviously adds some dollarz to the cost.
So where did I find this golden merino ticket, you might ask? Surprise – Organic Cotton Plus, of all places! They are starting to branch out to include other natural fibers than just cotton, which is all kinds of awesome. When they asked me if I’d like to try a little piece of whatever caught my fancy from the website, I stumbled across the merino wool and, forreal you guys, my heart stopped for a nanosecond. There aren’t a whole lot of options on the site at the moment – just the black I have here, as well as a natural colorway (which I almost got, but then the idea of dying that shit seemed too overwhelming. Plus, black is so useful! Even if it photographs like crap). At $33 a yard, it is not cheap – but it’s worth it. That black merino is a whopping 61″ wide, plus, IT’S MACHINE WASHABLE WOOL. Oh, and you don’t pay NZ shipping prices! Win win!
Having used both merino wool from Organic Cotton Plus, as well as the stuff straight from New Zealand – I can confidently say that this is pretty good stuff. It’s soft and lightweight without being see-through, it has a nice stretch and drape to it, and it cuts and sews like a dream. Wait till you see the topstitching on this baby – it’s ridiculously beautiful. Ahh I just love this fabric.
The only downside I can think of is that it does wrinkle up a bit, as you can see in these photos (it’s not nearly as noticeable in real life – otherwise, I would’ve steamed things up before taking photos. Womp whomp, deal with it). Kind of the same thing as linen – just natural wear wrinkles. If that bothers you, you’ll want to stick to something with a poly blend. For me, though, wrinkles are an ok trade-off for natural fibers!
Anyway, I loved my Jenna cardigan so much – I immediately made a second one!
This one is pretty boringly similar to the black merino one, except it’s longer. It’s not quite the longer version – I cropped some off for my proportions – but it does look better with the shirt I’m wearing underneath it, ha 🙂 Instead of using merino wool, I used some wool knit that I picked up at Mood Fabrics when I was recently in the store. This stuff is less drapey than the merino – it’s almost like sweatshirting, except without a fleecy side. It’s also not machine washable, so there’s that. I’ll have to handwash it like I do all my hand knits, oh well.
Sewing both of these was ridiculously easy, by the way. My second version took me all of 2 hours – not bad! I made the bust 32″ and took in the sleeves a bit because they were a little wide. I also had to shorten the sleeves by a couple of inches.
As I mentioned, I was pretty apprehensive about the button bands – but surprisingly enough, the button holes were way less problematic than I was anticipating! I made some test button holes – experimenting with interfacing, tear-away stabilizer, no interfacing – but ultimately went with the instructions, as I figure Kat knows more than I do when it comes to knit button holes 🙂 The button band is stabilized with woven fusible interfacing, and it’s sewn on with a 1:1 ratio (meaning it’s not stretched at all). This gives the knit fabric enough heft to tolerate a button hole stitch without getting eaten into the bobbin area (my former experience with this sort of thing). For the black merino cardi, I also used tear-away stabilizer in addition to the interfacing. For the grey cardi, I skipped the tear-away stablizer and just kept things purely interfaced. Both worked out splendidly!
Another thing I’ll point out is that, while these cardigans are somewhat fitted, there’s just enough ease included to keep the button bands from gaping open. Always a plus in my book!
I’m thrilled that they both look just as good unbuttoned as they do buttoned – which is important to me, as a cardigan-wearer. I usually button things up, but it’s nice to have unbutton options:)
Here are some ~extreme~ close-ups of the merino wool cardigan. Check out that topstitching! Ughhh it’s so beautiful! I did add a little more topstitching than called for in the pattern – I wanted to tie in the topstitched button bands and button holes, so I included it at the shoulder seams and along the bottom band. Plus, it’s just beautiful. Seriously.
Also, how bout them buttons? These are also from Organic Cotton Plus. I know black and brown is generally frowned upon as a color combination, but I like it 🙂

Oooh first! Firstly I want to say I need the cardis for air-conditioning also. Coming up to summer it is imperative. Also that price for the merino is pretty good. Here (in Oz) I have paid up to A$38 per metre (and there are more expensive ones) but nothing beats machine washable merino! So I’d made hip length 3/4 sleeves!
O.M.G. I am making view A, hip length with long sleeves. Then view B waist length (sleeves yet to be determined). Then I am working out how to make view A into a v-neck version and I am going to make about 100 of them. Awesome!
Oh, what a great pattern! I totally need cropped cardis in every colour now that summer’s on its way. View B, with 3/4 sleeves, waist length, would be perfect in a rainbow of colours!

I’ve been wanting a great cardigan pattern! I need this – I wear one EVERYDAY! I’d start with the cropped length and long sleeves – I find that this look works best with full/flared skirts and dresses.
So pretty. Also wear cardigans all summer long.

Love the cardi! Those kind are an RTW staple in my closet. And I loved that you found merino wool…I’ve been looking for some merino wool fabric like Icebreaker brand clothing, my husband loves them for working out and I’d love to try making them myself…any thoughts on how your merino compares to that? Thanks for showing off this pattern. A good cardigan can be hard to find! I’d love to be in the running. Love the waist hem. I’m glad to know organic cotton plus has been branching out. They used to be super pricey for non -cotton fibers. FWIW The Fabric Store has an LA branch and although they haven’t got web ordering up they are great about phone orders. I just got five different colors of plain and patterned merino jersey in the mail from them and it is totally gorgeous. ( shipping was $20 flat rate….)
I loved this pattern as soon as I saw it and I want to make the cropped version with 3/4 sleeves. I’m not sure the yoke style if for me though so I’ll probably just keep it plain. I need to make it soon though as the summer in london is gradually fading away! A ponte Roma perhaps for those extra cold winters days :o)

Oh, I just found this pattern the other day, and it’s the answer to my wearing-summer-dresses-in-winter-issue! I need some cardis, and as you say, knitting them takes too long and won’t be as light weight.
I need at least one cropped orange and one cropped blue, to go with my blue dress with orange flowers (not blogged yet), probably long sleeves. And I’d also love to make them in merino wool, if I find the perfect colors.

I’ve never ventured into cardi making – although if i had the pattern i would make a lightweight jersey (navy or white) hip length version with 3/4 sleeves!
Cardigans are missing from my closet too, I don’t even have any RTW ones because I just cannot find the right length (I’m tall, with long arms) so this would be awesome! I’d start with black or brown, then do stripes and everything else I could think of!
I have pumpkin colored jersey waiting to be sewn into a cardigan. I’ve had it for a year or so but couldn’t find a pattern. I would make the longer version with long sleeves!
Ooh – so pretty! I’d make hip length, with full length sleeves. It gets cold in the Rocky Mountains during winter! I’d probably make something pretty basic at first – black or dark gray. Then, I might try to mix it up with something fun!
I love the idea of a cardi pattern, as it can be worn with pants, skirts and dresses and it replaces RTW cardis (that usually complement my DIY garments). I can see myself making a couple of cropped wool or ponte cardis for my winter wardrobe.

I actually just finished knitting a cardigan! But I love the pieced version of this cardi… It’s true that there are some knits that are just impossible to make at home, the fine, lightweight cardis in particular!
I too have been picking my brain on how to replace those RTW knit cardigans for ages!! I even went as far as knitting my own this summer, but of course it won’t be nearly as thin. If I won the Jenna pattern I would buy a lot of “boring” solid knits to supply me with a lifetime of cardigans :))

I am very glad you mentioned the buttonholes — that was the part I was most concerned with! I think the pattern is super cute. I’d probably make mostly croppedslightly longer versions in both views. Tracking down appropriate fabric is another tricky bit so thanks for the merino wool find!
I think waist-length, 3/4 sleeves, and I’d probably start out with some remnant-table “miscellaneous lycra print” fabric before I even thought about springing for a nice wool knit.

Ah this post makes me sooooooooo happy. On my to do list is ‘find a good pattern to make a cardi’ and now I don’t have to as you’ve shown me the perfect one. I have the same air con issues so a cardigan goes pretty much everywhere with me regardless of what the weather is doing outside. Pretty sure I will make every version in time but start with all the longs what with things heading directly towards winter. Brrrrrr.
I think I would go with the hip version/ long sleeves, and probably in navy blue!

Your cardi’s look professional! Absolutely beautiful job. This is about the third pattern you’ve made that make me want to buy it. And that’s after seeing the pattern itself and not being inspired (no offense to the pattern makers!). I love cardi’s, and after seeing your version, this will have to go on my wish list.
Quick question? I’ve seen the Consew 14TU2345 on sale for $360. It’s billed as a “coverlock” and serger in one (if I’m reading it right). Have you had any experience with it? Or do you have any recommendations on a serger vs coverstitch?

I’m not Lauren but… I have a Brother convertible serger that turns into a coverstitch and I LOVE it! Would highly recommend having a conertible…
I only have a serger, and no coverlock (yet!). I haven’t personally used that machine, but I have used an all-in-one coverlock/serger (the Babylock Evolve that is my mom’s) and my personal opinion is that that thing is a pain in the ass. Not sure abotu the Consew, but the Babylock one has to be completely unthreaded and rethreaded when you want to switch from serger to coverlock. Sooo annoying! I’d personally rather have two machines.
That being said… $360 is about a quarter of what I paid for my serger (no regrets, obvs, but still… $$$ yikes haha), so that ain’t a bad price! I’d definitely see if you can try it out first, though!

For I just bought this pattern, and was planning on making two versions: one in NZ merino and one in the effin same wool knit that we got at Mood. First crotches, now cardigans… it’s all getting a bit single white female round here.

Yea!!! This pattern looks awesome. The merino wool sounds sumptuous. I’m really digging the look of your second cardigan. The body length is perfect! I have quite a few black cardigans. But, I think I’d still want to sew one up lol I can’t ever have too much black clothing.

I’m still pretty new to sewing, but I would love to make the cropped version with long sleeves in black. I’m extremely short, and I have a hard time finding cardigans that fit well!

I’d really like to have a go at sewing a Jenna. As much as I’d like to knit a collection of cardies, I’d much rather sew them in way less time than it would take me to knit one. Would be a great excuse to buy some of the luscious merino I’ve been hearing about. Crossing my fingers and toes!
I…..have this deliciously soft, brown knit , that I I picked up at Michael Levine’s fabric by the pound store in Los Angeles on my field trip…. That would be my “tester” Long sleeve, to the waist…. With some groovy vintage buttons from my stash…. Then, I’d have to make one for my Ginger Baby, more conservative in the button category, Then… I’d probably start hacking up my other sweaters and see what I could come up with, I like wearing something catchy at work… shake things up a bit. 🙂

I would definitely make the long-sleeved version, we already really need long-sleeved sweaters/cardigans over here and all of my ready-to-wear ones … have seen better days, if I may just understate it a bit. I don’t like the cutesy shoulder detail because I’m not a vintagey kind of gal, so I would skip that. I’m unsure about the length, but probably the longer one, or some in-between length like your second version.
As for fabric … sigh. I’m allergic to wool, so that’s out, and knit fabric choice over here is really bad. So I don’t know. I’d have to hunt around for something appropriate. I really should do that anyway.

This looks like one of those patterns that needs to be repeated a lot. Perfect for the classic black/grey/beige-tone varieties. I’m currently a bit in love with the burn-your-retinas-out pink that’s embracing many a gal to walk the streets of Oz. My life is wrapped around assignments and study at this moment, but come November 7th there’s going to be a frenzy of making stuff. How cool would this be in a loud tropical print? Bird of paradise, flowers galore. Preferably worn whilst nursing a cocktail in one hand and watching the waves roll in.

Yay! This is also a gap I’ve been wondering how to fill. For now I will probably still just buy super expensive fair trade cardigans or something, since my machine eats knits. But someday when I have a lovely better machine I would make many of those long length, long sleeve version As.

I need to dress in layers where I live and have been looking for a regular/ non shawl or fall collar cardigan to replace my tattered RTW ones that I wear all the time. When I started knitting my third (ever) hand-knit cardigan last month, my husband’s question was “How many sweaters do you neeeeed?” Uhm, a lot. You’d think he’d have figured that out given that I’m only ever not wearing a sweater for about 30 minutes a day.
Huzzah for a giveaway! I’d definitely start with the long sleeved, hip length cardigan. I dream of finding the perfect heathered black/charcoal knit fabric, or something in a nice jewel tone green — both of which seem to be tough to find.
Finally, the perfect cardigan! I basically live in them, especially in winter. The first ones would be 2-3 basic ones in grey, brown, black (long style, long sleeve). Then I would attempt a transformation into a V-Neck cardigan. Finally, I would use all my bright-coloured Jersey scraps in combination with some uni basic coloured Jersey to create cardigan-like shirts (those with just a shirt front spliced to the cardigan)- perfect stashbusting!
Oh, for sure I’ve seen this pattern and desired it! I would make view A with the little shoulder yoke thingies. I have also been eyeing up Organic Cotton Plus offerings, so I was glad to see your thoughts on the merino. Keep us posted about how it washes and wears!!
Oh wow, so cute and so why I need right now! I could have written the first part of your list myself, ask too have long since reached the point where it’s rare that I find myself something I haven’t made myself:). Including the knitting part and the aircon part… only thing I’ve never done is cut up something to copy it – have you seen Stephanie linceum’s book?
And merino is the best! I got some lovely stuff from a seller in NZ on Etsy and haven’t made it yet. But I know what I’m making now – whether I win or not (and I never win anything any hows) I will get this pattern, love that high band. I’d start with a cropped long sleeve version too.
Oh, and the black brown stuff is tooootal bullshit. I remember the kids at school singing blue and green should never be seen unless there’s a colour in between… and then there’s red and orange and pink – oh, and bright blue with black – like your hair – all fab combos.

You can totally sew a lightweight cardigan! You just need to buy some sweater knit fabric. I just made a striped one and I wear it all the time. I’ve tried knitting but I’m pretty terrible at it.
All the cardigans, is what I’d make. But I suppose I would start with some remainder stripes I bought on a whim at JoAnn’s. I always have the problem that if I get a card big enough for my bosom, then the armholes are all big and winging. The ones you made are great!
As I’m now struggling through the cable ribbing on the Peggy Sue the prospect of a two hour cardigan looks very appealing! It’s a gorgeous pattern, love your grey version, going to put my knitting away and search out some wool jersey!
I love cardigans! Right now it is 94 degrees out but the building that I spend all day in is violently air-conditioned due to the ancient heating system breaking. And I don’t knit, so I can’t knit my own cardigans, so I have been ogling this pattern for ages! I would make the cropped length with the shoulder gathers, and probably the long sleeves (as we’re going into winter, supposedly.)
OMG. Perfect! I would make both variations, many times, probably always cropped. I’d need to get my grubby little hands on the Colette Guide to Knits, too, given my lack of serger.
Speaking of, do you think you could comment on the sewability of this without the assistance of a serger?
As long as you’re not using a super drapey/difficult knit, I dont’ see why you couldn’t sew this on a standard sewing machine 🙂 I just use my serger for everything because it’s there!

This pattern looks great and now I want to make cardigans in every color of the rainbow. I would probably start with a white hip length long sleeve view A, as my current white cardi needs replacing.
3/4 Length sleeves with crop length so that I can wear over my short sleeve dresses in my office (baby its COLD inside!). BTW- I swore I wasn’t buying more fabric and now I’m sitting here drooling over wools. *facepalm*
Variation A, long version is just the classic cardi look. Perfect for a twinset, even. That’s the version I’d go with. That’s a lovely pattern. I can see it getting made up in multiple fabrics as my standard go-to A/C-freezing cover up. Nice!

Gorgeous! I love the wide band at the bottom, and the topstitching. I want to make the short sleeve cardi (to wear with high-waisted pencil skirts), the waist length with 3/4 sleeves and a hip length with long sleeves. Okay, so I really want to make them all but that’s where I would start. And I’ve got some magenta wool jersey and some teal wool jersey in my stash, just waiting to be turned into the perfect cardi! What a great pattern!

Hi, you need to look up The Fabric Store LA. The have all kinds of merino wool knit. It’s from NewZealand and it’s amazing. They don’t really have an online store but they do post some pictures and you can call them and they will mail it to you. The price is very reasonable.
This is serendipitously perfect timing for me! I’ve wanted to try out sewing a cardigan for ages but there were never any good patterns. And I don’t feel comfortable enough with knits to mess about much with franken-patterning with them. This pattern looks ideal! I would instantly make a brown cardi with this. I’m in dire need of a brown one, was thinking I’d knit one, but guess what? I have some brown wool jersey that will be perfect to sew up with this pattern. And I was wondering just this morning what to do with the wool jersey! I’d make the cropped version with the shoulder yokes and 3/4 sleeves. In fact, I’d probably make several of that version – but would love trying out the colour-blocking once I’ve got my basics covered! Yay for cardi’s!!! The sewing community really was missing a good cardigan pattern, I agree! I’m also a year round cardigan wearer (air conditioning in the south is NO JOKE) and only have a few sad, misshapen RTW knit cardigans to my name these days. Love your merino wool and wool knit versions. They look totally pro!!

i would make the waist length cardi, and i would put long sleeves on it. winter is coming. (said in dire tones.) and layers are so very helpful.
I love cardigans. I would make the long view with the long sleeves (its amazing how hard it is to find a long sleeved cardigan, everyone seems to make them with 3/4 sleeves!).

I think first I’d make the short version with long sleeves and then the longer version with long sleeves. I’d like to keep it simple(ish) as I would use it as a neutral for outfits. I might even make a short sleeved version for the summer.

I’d make the full length version with full length sleeves since I just knitted a cropped card. I never thought about sewing one until you posted this. Gaaaaa, the possibilities!
I’ve been needing to replace my cardies for a while now but can’t bring myself to spend the money on basics that don’t really duty or suit. Needless to say I love this pattern, it’s just what I’ve been looking for and the shoulder detail is really cute. First though I’m going to sew a couple of basic versions of view A, if only I could find merino in the UK…

I live in cardigans! But for the opposite season of you….the heat from heaters is often too much for me indoors (so I need a layer I can remove) but I like the cardigan outdoors in the winter (I’m from MT originally so it’s the summer heat I don’t get along with). I would make pretty much every sleeve variation in a waist length and a long sleeve in hip length. Probs a 3/4 in hip length too.

I have been eyeing the Jenna Cardi. I like to jazz up plain outfits (black dress/plain top & jeans) with colourful cardigans so I can see some striped versions, longer length with 3/4 sleeves in my future.
Love your cardigans – they look like great wardrobe staples. I wear cardigans like this all the time so this pattern is definitely on my to-sew list. I really like the blue colour-blocked version on the website so I might have to have a go at recreating that!

I was so excited to see this pattern launch on her blog! Being long in the torso, RTW cropped cardigans are TOO cropped, and the regular length ones are a weird length on me. I would probably make a bunch of these, but I’d start with a (slightly lengthened) cropped 3/4 sleeve version with that fabulous yoke detail! Thanks for the giveaway!! 🙂

I might also manage to track down a particular Nani Iro knit I’ve been hunting for! I could make so many!

Recently tried to get into knitting and failed so this is totally what I need! Love all the options.
I am also a fellow merino wool pusher, I’m from NZ but live in the UK now and every winter I start up again telling everyone how amazing it is. I think my boyfriend is finally convinced after 4 years of harrissment to buy merino but the rest of my friends are sadly yet to understand. It’s so expensive here so I have to wait until friends from home come to visit so I can get them to bring some over fabric for me (very infrequent!) but have some currently on route via a cousin for a winter cardy and this pattern looks perfect- long sleeves, long waist for me. More merino on me the better. The cost is still a killer but it’s like an investment right?

Beautiful make! I love wool but my skin is so senstitive that I shy away from most of it. How is the feel of the merino? Looks awesome in the photos!
It’s very soft and not at all scratchy, but I’m also not sensitive to wool at ALL. If it helps, my mom is a little sensitive (not a true allergy, but she can’t wear a plain wool sweater without an underlayer!) and merino doesn’t bother her at all 🙂
I love version a and would do the same as you – replace all of the my store-bought (Target mainly) staples that I keep purchasing. This is a very exciting pattern for me.
Oooh, I’d love to try my hand at a cardigan! I need a new long, grey wool cardi, as the one I have is worn to shreds. Here in Norway merino wool fabric is relatively easy to get hold of, and I’ve actually got some thick merino interlock that I believe would be perfect for this pattern. Fingers crossed!
I would definitely be able to RAID MY STASH of knits and fleece to make a bazillion cardigans to go with my workout gear. I get hot working out, but I need something light to throw on afterwards when I hit the grocery store and post office. 🙂

I love cardigans, my office also suffers from AC being turned onto arctic at all times. I’d start with a hip length cardigan with long sleeves. I usually just buy cardigans in basic neutral colorways, but it’d be fun to sew up a large scale flower print or some other print to add some variety and a splash of color now that winter is on it’s way!

Ohhh…. I really like the yoke detail of view B, and being tall, I would love to have a long sleeved cardigan. RTW long sleeved cardigans always seem to be too short, so I wear them 3/4 length. I would love to make a ton of these in all combinations and colors – I could wear a cardigan every. single. day.
First, I need to make like a million of these because I wear cardigans everyday and RTW ones are never worth the money, I just keep spending money on things I hate. That said I would stitch up Variation B at hip length in long sleeves, in a lightweight black something before doing anything else, because my current black cardigan is embarrassingly tattered.
I love cardigans so much that my husband makes fun of me whenever I buy a new one. And then he’ll start giving them names, like the ‘party cardigan’, the ‘conservative one’, the ‘work cardigan’, even though they’re all the same, just different colors. So yeah, I def need a cardigan pattern so I can make my own instead of caving into buying more J Crew cardigans, which are my fave.

I also like the idea of contrast cuffs, neckline and button band. Maybe in a print fabric! Subtle but really cool up close.

I just made a lady skater in navy merino and have been searching for a cropped cardi patterns go with – how good would this look over the top of the LS!!! The good news for me is that you have save me from hacking one of my RTWs to bits in a vain attempt to make a rub off….thank you, if you haven’t succeeded I’m pretty sure i’d fall at the first hurdle! I’d make from silver grey merino version (post Xmas, after three solid months of hinting and leaving post it note clues all over the house) or maybe a linen jersey?!?

It will be waist length with long sleeves for me. That pattern is just what is missing from my life. I’m trying to live without RTW but I haven’t got the patience or time to knit my own cardi so I’m stuck with wearing one dk grey one I bought 18 months ago.
Wait til you come to London, there’s a treasure trove of merino wool knit in Cloth House in Soho. I’ve already made a cardigan in the most dreamy double-faced wool from there, so I’d probably buy more and do some fun colour-blocking on the yokes of the Jenna.
Next time the Fabric Store is having a sale on merino I can pick some up for you to keep the costs down.

I totally understand how pumped you must be: I too have been looking out for a perfect cardi pattern. I hate buying them because I always settle for something that’s ok, but not perfect. Most times, RTW cardis have flimsy fabric, stretches out too much or shrinks in the wash, and sometimes the cut is just plain weird. And don’t get me started on the dreaded button-hole-gap.
So yeah, really looking forward to trying out this beauty: it looks like perfection to me! I’m partial to the cropped version with long or quarter length sleeves (perfect over a dress!).

Everyone has a favourite cardigan that they wear to death. I like the idea of the two-tone version. But you’re black and grey versions are probably the most practical. Great pattern, there was definitely a hole in the market.

I’ve been looking at that cardi pattern and wondering if I should purchase another pattern – I sew all my knits in merino – just love it and as I’m from NZ it is readily available – keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. I like B, long sleeves, waist length. I’d make one solid-colored (boring) one, and then maybe try some Alabama Chanin techniques to gussy it up a little.

Oh man, yes! This is the pattern I’ve been looking for for ages! I’m gonna go with the hip length version, long sleeves – maximum coverage for winter. I like the look of view B but would probably make view A in a really boring colour and then embroider crazy stuff all over the yoke. Oh yeah.
I would make the long sleeve, waist length. I also had a great (perfect) grey knit sweater, that was just tight enough in the right places that sadly fell apart. I think I would try this to replace it and eventually do other colors.

I wear cardigans all the time. Like all the time. Short sleeves in summer and I have a selection of rtw merino wool long sleeved versions that are well over 10years old. It has now come time to let two of these go so I’d be making the hip length long sleeve version in a cornflower blue merino from my stash and another short sleeve version in a cream wool.
I would make view A, 3/4 sleeves, hip length in something bright.
The variation a, hip length with long sleeves is my Jenna cardi favourite. I like it’s fitted classic shape, which I hope to team up with some soft fluffy grey with cream animal acrylic print knit. Cream buttons and top stitching will make a feature without being over the top!

Perfect! I made a knot cardigan last year by copying one of my ready made ones but I never put buttons on it because my machine does crappy buttonholes even on woven. I love the shoulder yoke option on this patter. Very cute!

Oh, I would go with the regular sleeved (3/4 length) hip length version. Don’t do much wool in my part of the country – not that much cold weather, so I would probably choose a cotton or rayon blend in gray or navy–or maybe even red!
I would go with a full length view A cardigan using a light wool probably. I moved to California recently and the A/C is insane in some places, need a little cover up! Plus, I’ve got a small torso and NOTHING looks right on me!! The proportions are out of whack!

I’m a short-waisted gal, so finding cardigans the correct length is a rarity. I’d make the cropped version, with the shoulder yoke view – such a darling detail.

Nearly 300 comments already, everyone wants to make this sweater – including me! The decades that it would take me to knit a sweater in a fine gauge are definitely not worth it. I would love to make the Jenna Cardi in all of the views, but I would probably start with view B, full length and long long sleeves – winter is coming. Oh, and can I also get in on Jane’s offer for stocking up on merino wool on sale? Seriously.
I’m so inspired. We are coming into our warmer months at the bottom of the world. A gorgeous 3/4 sleeve cropped cardigan in a light weight wool would be just perfect for now, with a short sleeved version to follow.
Wow this pattern looks great it makes me bubble with so many ideas for showing off great fabric obviously plain works but lace, patterned or ribbed and you wouldn’t know it was the same pattern over and over again it would look so different. I would make the version with little gathers first.

I’ve been looking for a cardi pattern to use in the winter. In South Florida that’s all you need to keep warm on those “cold wintery days”. I’d make both options to go with all of my outfits.

YES! I’ve been eyeing this pattern because I’m not a knitter but I love cardigans and every time I buy one at Target or wherever, I feel guilty about supporting that yucky industry. I would make the longer version. Our winters are generally mild (off and on) and I could get away with a wool knit cardi regularly.

If it wasn’t for the fact the I have had no sewing time at all for the last couple of weeks this would all ready be a part of my wardrobe, like you the one gaping hole in my handmaids and lightweight cardigans (preferably thin cotton lace) that I can wear as is in the summer and underneath a think wool in the winter. I love the shoulder flap version and the short to go with high wasted skirts and dresses so I think that will be the first.
There is one thing I wont try to replace with a handmade version any time soon and that is my really cold wether coat that is water prof and stuffed with dun and the has kept me warm to below -30 degrees Celsius, It an amazing coat.

I. WANT. THAT. CARDI! I go through RTW cardis so quickly– I either leave them on the back of a chair after a meeting, or tear a hole on the sleeve/cuff, or wear them so much they are permanently stretched out. I would love a pattern to make my own cardis! Most of my cardigans are solid, so I would use the pattern to make an awesome sweater knit patterned cardi… I’m thinking big floral pattern, or maybe an oversized herringbone. something graphic and fabulous.

I like your versions more than the ones made by Muse patterns because you have a bit more room in it.
In my stash is sitting a piece of knit fabric (for some years now) with a bold pattern and I had in mind to make a cardi out of it but until now I didn’t find a good pattern. In Belgium, we don’t have these small pattern making companys and I haven’t seen a nice cardi in the Burda magazine yet.
As for knitting the same here: not yet enough patience to knit a whole cardi with very thin yarn.
If I could use this Pattern, I would make the cropped version with long sleeves. I love the round yoke but with my fabric you wont notice it.

Using lots of neutral cardigans, I would probably make version A first – hip length, with long sleeves, in black. After that I would experiment with a colour blocked version! Grey and purple, perhaps?

I don’t see why it wouldn’t! Just make sure you size up if you are using a fabric that doesn’t have a high stretch content 🙂

How exciting! I’ve been looking for the perfect cardigan pattern! I would make the waist lenght version with shoulder yoke and 3/4 sleeves, maybe with a contrast yoke and bands like the promo pictures from her site. I have an amazing charcoal bamboo knit in my stash that would make a lovely cardigan.
This really is my dream cardigan pattern. This this pretty much the only shape I wear. Love the idea of a merino version. Interestingly, I never wear black cardigans. My best “neutral” cardigan I own is a red/coral colour. It just seems to go with everything. I could do with a green/turquoise one though, so that would be my preferred make, if I can find the fabric!
Hip length, long sleeves, without the yoke, and I think my eldest would snaffle it before I could even dream about trying it on. I would make a series of them in different colours. My eldest would then request/demand on in a bright colour for her to where in the ice rink, to school, on her bike, she’s a cardi lass like you.
I ADORE merino wool. 20 years ago I made my wedding dress from the summer weight merino suiting fabric. Draped beautifully, and was the ideal fabric. I use wool whenever I can, much prefer it to any other fabric.
Living here in Melbourne, Australia means I can get wool easily. It is only international patterns that are a problem..

I have a huuuge stash of yarn and patterns only for cardigan making but it takes such a long time to knit… (btw, the most wonderful yarn for cardis is Holst Garn Supersoft 100% uld. Thanks for the competition! Your versions are simple but effective, I’d definitely go with some good neutrals and nice preppy colours like bottle green, oxblood red and mustard. But I love the stripes and colour block effect for the photos for 3/4 sleeves in View B, I’d definitely want to do something like that for Spring. Effectively I’d want one for every day of the week, for every season!

Hello! I know what you mean about hand making cardigans – they are definitely lacking in my wardrobe and I’m going to do something about it! Love how versatile this pattern is. First I would make a cropped version with 3/4 sleeves. I think it would be cool to do some embroidery on one shoulder. When I’m feeling bolder,I’d also make this in a dark tartan fabric – something with a blues and greens then use a solid colour on the waistband and sleeve cuffs.
New released patterns often duplicate some that already exist. But this one is really filling a gap. As many other sewists, I also need to make some jersey knit cardigans to complete my homemade wardrobe. This one in merino knitted fabric would be great. Love the view with the gathered yoke and 3/4 sleeves. Your make is magnifique, as usual.
I have a few Cardi patterns, but they are all the loose drapery kind, which I do like at times….but this Cardi is way too cute. I don’t have any fabric though, in my 5thousand yard stash. 😉 guess I’ll just have to buy some more if I win… I think I’d like to try that merino you found at organic cotton. Good luck to me!

this pattern is lush! just what i need to lengthen the life of my sundresses and sleeveless shirts – let’s face it, hand knits are sometimes just too hot/don’t look quite right for all occasions. i’m thinking a nice cropped length, three quarter sleeve jobby! but equally long sleeves with a thumb holes. bright colours, but also a charcoal. so many choices!

I’d definitely go for the long-sleeved version– I have the opposite problem that you do, in that I need to find nice layering pieces that aren’t wool! (I’m sadly allergic.) I also knit very slowly, so sewing up a cardigan or five sounds like a great compromise.
I will likely make a cropped, 3/4 length sleeve, long sleeved and about every option under the sun. I wear cardigans all the time. Like you, Lauren, it takes a long time to knit one and my cardigan needs exceed my available knitting time.
I love to sew knits but have been scared of attempting a cardigan so far (probably because of all the buttons!) Yours are gorgeous. I’d go with a waist length long sleeved version.

The top stitching is simply gorgeous. Did you use a double needle to get the lines so perfect? Please don’t tell me you stitched each side of that seam individually!
I love the lines on the Jenna. I don’t care much for button up cardis, though. I prefer mine open front. So I’d make hip length, long sleeve, but no buttons. And I’d extend the length to fall low hip and the sleeve to extend over my hands with a thumb hole. My hands freeze!
Haha, yes, I used a twin needle! There’s a little stitching guideline in the center of my walking foot – I used that to keep everything straight and even 🙂
OOHHH would love to make the one with the shoulder detail, cropped, 3/4 sleeve to wear over tanks, sleeveless dresses, etc. I love cardis! And being curvy, Cardis really work for me to give some waist definition and coverage to my upper arms. This is the second review I have seen for the Jenna Cardi. The first was from a Curvy collective blogger and now you, so it is obvious it works for all shapes!
This is just what I needed. Doing the Ready to Wear Fast this year, my existing cardis are all wearing out. I need new ones in just about every color I wear, especially black. All the patterns I looked at before had an old-lady-polyester-vibe. This is the perfect length and fit. thanks for posting.
Win!! Like the rest of you all I have been unsuccessful in my cardigan search. And even the ready to wear ones are hard to find just right plus in my “I’m not really doing much shopping” phase apparently all my cardis wore out. Who knew? 😉 I’m a long sleeve sort of person but I can totally see doing the other lengths as well. And I am in no way going to knit a cardi. I’ve thought about it but it just takes way to freaking long. Also the merino looks lovely! I’ve been looking for wool knits but they are super few and far between it seems. Or massively expensive but I suppose that’s just the way it’s gonna be.
I live in cardigans too, especially indoors in summer (which is where we’re swiftly heading here in South Africa at the moment). I’d love to try the waist-length version with 3/4 sleeves first if I were lucky enough to win the pattern, but I’m sure I’d end up making plenty of different combinations sooner rather than later 🙂

I’ve been reading your blog for a couple months now, and it’s really inspired me to start sewing my own clothes (thank you!!), I’m excited to start tackling things like cardigans, which I love to wear. I would probably make the longer version of A first, as I am pretty tall, with the 3/4 length sleeves. Ei! I love both the pattern and the wool! It gives me great joy to know I am not the only crazy cow out there obsessed with natural fibers! I’ve rejected wonderful patterns and drapes because they were plastic! So, it is always an added difficulty. But that also adds some thrill to the process, doesn’t it? When something is confortable, beautiful, and healthy to the skin and the planet, bingo! ‘m gonna find out if they sell international.

It was a wonderful wonderful fabric, but I commited the fatal mistake of machine wash it. I completely destroyed the waterproof quality and had to throw it away (after getting totaly soaked:-(
And now, for the life of me cannot remember where did I buy it. I only remember it was an American website, so please please, help me out…

Ohhh, I have no idea 😦 I’ve never bought rain coating fabric before. Another commenter suggested Seattle Fabrics for outdoor/waterproof fabrics, so maybe check there?

Thanks! I must admit I can’t remember where the windowpane knit came from – it had been lurking in my stash for quite a long time and is an acrylic blend, quite a firm knit. The blue and blue/white striped fabrics are both merino wool, and the chocolate brown is a midweight wool/acrylic blend, all of which are from stores in Wellington, NZ.

Fab pattern! I tried button holes on jersey once & it was a disaster! I’d make this in 3/4 length sleeve, & in a nice bright coral (trying to bring brighter colours into my wardrobe).
OMG I dream of cardigans too! I have plans for a long-sleeved version using some to-die-for rusty orange fine wool knit. I’ve been looking everywhere for a suitable pattern that would show it off and I almost can’t take the Jenna excitement!

The wool I used for my grey cardigan isn’t merino – it’s just a plain wool knit from Mood Fabrics 🙂 I don’t think they have it anymore (I bought some of the last of the bolt and then I saw a few other people eyeballing the remains, haha), but you could call the NYC store and ask! 🙂

This is exactly what I need in my life! Caridgans are so necessary to me, and I like them plain and boring and functional, but that yoke detail has me swooning! My mom is making me some knit fingerless gloves/arm warmers and I’ve been dreaming of lots of 3/4 sleeves to go with them. So I think I’d have to do 3/4 sleeves with the yoke, probably in hip length. So exciting!

I would definitely make the variation with the yoke. It just looks so cute! As for fabric, I think I need to go shopping!!
Ohh, that’s cute and so versatile. I like your version but the yoke version is a great variation. I can see many of both these styles working in well in my wardrobe, in merino, of course.
As a librarian, it only seems natural that I make this! I only own one cardigan and as a friend once told me, “I thought cardigans were a requirement for librarians? You have to own one to get into grad school or get hired,” I am clearly lacking in this arena. As you said, air conditioning is freezing and I don’t do much robust physical activity while at work. I’ll most likely stick with something basic as you did for the color but maybe make a three-quarter and a long sleeve each!

I love me cardi’s. Long sleeves for me (I still like to tie them around my neck when not wearing) and the mid length so its not cropped but fits my short waisted torso. I think I’d like a red one.,,,
I would make both. Thinking of either a sweater knit or ponte knit.
I choose style A waist length and long sleeve. I love the wool fabric u used but I would use some fabric with a floral design.
I love wearing cardis! What a fabulous pattern!!! I love the two tone blue one that is shown, I’d definitely make something similar, I love the wide hem band and shoulder yoke detailing!
How awesome that you are eliminating rtw from your closet. That feels like such a pipe dream for me and my sewing progress. I’m quite smitten with the curved yoke version of Jenna, with either long sleeves or 3/4 sleeves. And think I’d much rather sew a new cardigan than knit a fine gauge black cardigan… (my black cardigan is dying, I’m pretending that because it is black it isn’t noticeable but it probably is).
I wear cardis with EVERYTHING. I feel like they cover my back fat. And I’m in love with all the views with this pattern. I’ve tried knitting 3 cardigans now and quit because I get confused. Plus I’d probably be 80 by the time I finished knitting one. But sewing one I can do! I really, really, really need a gold/mustard cardigan to match the fabric for a fall skirt in the works….
i love cardigans and have had this cream merino languishing in my stash for ages. i would make a hip length version with the shoulder details and 3/4 length sleeves. yes! just in time for winter!

OMG a whopping 360 comments! I have already purchased the Jenna Cardi, coz these are brilliant for throwing on in the summer – yep I have a couple of RTWs. I have plans to make mine up this weekend, now that I’ve printed the pattern out. I’ve got this beautiful orange Merino http://sewiststitch.blogspot.co.nz/2014/09/the-great-wsbn-sewing-room-tour.htm (I love that stuff, although I recently bought from a shop other than The Fabric Shop and the quality wasn’t as good). No it’s not cheap but it sews like a dream, it washes like a dream and it wears so easily.
Oh how cute it looks! I would make it a wild one, maybe use sequins etc. 🙂

Your cardigans turned out awesome and so much faster than knitting. I mean, I love it but I do have a few makes that I am just going to take apart because I can’t remember where I’m at with them anymore. The one cardigan that turned out okay for me was one I used a knitting machine to make.
Love the cardigans! I’m in the same boat of not having enough versatile pieces when it’s still in the 90s outside here in Texas but the office temperature is barely in the 70s. I’m on the petite side so the long version may be too long for me, but the length you have on the grey cardi looks perfect!
I’d like to get some merino wool. I have fine merino wool underlayers for extreme cold (we don’t get extremely cold here but I went to Arctic) which I love and I’d love a cardigan in this – hip length, long sleeves, no yoke in first instance. Thanks.

I love cardigans and I am the wooooorst at knitting! Seriously, I’ve been knitting my first sweater since February. Since it’s getting cooler outside, I think I should probably start sewing some cardigans so I don’t freeze while I’m slowly knitting that sweater! I would definitely start with the longer view with long sleeves because I like basics, but I’m also interested in the view with the shoulder accents.
Oh merino wool hugs sound good to me and I too have been on the search for cardigan pattern !
I would make version A with short sleeves as it is now spring and coming into summer soon here in NZ. This would be the perfect way to start using up my merino stash which has at least six different colours.
I love the version with the gathers and yoke so I’d probably do that. What type of sleeve I’d make would depend on what fabric I could find.

I think I will make the view B with the gathered yoke first – in a crop version with 3/4 sleeves. I have a long upper body compared to my legs, so I cant really wear long cardigans. I will try to get hold of a wool/ silk blend knit for this I think. It will be soft and nice against the skin. I do agree with you that the black / grey / neutral coloured cardigans are the best. They will go with anything.
I’d already been sizing this up on Kat’s own blog and now the new Muse website – your versions look great too. I’d make the cropped one first and probably in merino as well (yay for sheep) but blue or purple… Ah, cardigan dreams…
I would make view a hip length with long sleeves. I would probably lengthen the cuffs and add a thumb hole so I could cover my hands when they get chilly.
Your cardis are fucking AWESOME. I can’t believe how perfect this pattern is, as I thought I’d always have to buy my cardis RDW. If I could make one, probably hip lenght and 3/4 sleeves I’d use a gorgeous – although pretty obnoxious 😀 – knit with navy and white striped, and little pink hearts all over that I bought with no idea of what to do with ! I now know they were made to be together ❤

I’d love to try this in a print. I wear a lot of black and gray so I love to have a lot of different options for adding some pizzazz.
I would make a long sleeved, hip length version, possibly view B, because I have some bits of gorgeous mad print fabric I bought from http://www.kitschycoo.bigcartel.com/category/fabric-by-type-prints-jersey?page=2 that are left over from making kids clothes, and I could use one for the shoulder panels and have the rest plain, maybe with contrast ribbing. Plus it’d be a good excuse to buy plain jersey from there (as it’s so much better quality than what I can get locally so I’d have to otherwise the shoulder panels would be thicker than the rest) and then I might accidentally get another bit of print….
A long View A – I already have the softest black knit for it. And a blue knit for the second one! All that is missing is the pattern. I love cardigans but because of my lovely “assests”, can never find a RTW one that I can close without busting a few buttons. So until I finally learn how to knit my own (a dream I recently picked up trolling through your wardrobe – I blame you Lauren for my new knitting obsession), I would love to sew my own cardigan.

I have this amazingly snugly cardi (in the perfect shade of blue) that magically goes with everything I own. I wear it so much it’s practically part of my skin! So I’d definitely do a preemptive strike and recreate it before it becomes totally threadbare!

Love this! I’ve knit a whole bunch of cardigans for myself, but the ones I reach for every morning are the thinner RTW ones. My first Jenna would be a waist length 3/4 sleeve in a dark brown to replace a cheap cardigan that recently kicked it.

Well since my ass is broke and I’m currently working at a Chain Fabric Store where I get a Substantial Employee Discount, I could see myself making a cardigan like this out of a sturdy poly/rayon or poly/cotton knit–I’ve seen bolts reading “jegging knits” on the end that I think would work quite well for a cardigan in terms of not showing through every line of the garment underneath.

I like how those look. Like you, I always carry a sweater in the summer -some places (my office) have the air conditioning set at a temperature lower than what people would tolerate in the winter. That always puzzles me.I have some wool jersey (?knit) in the basement to make some colorful ones for this coming winter.
I wear cardigans every day at work! I need dressier ones, and this fits the bill perfectly! I would make view A with 3/4 sleeves (cozy, but nothing to get in my way). Wool knits would be be perfect – breathable and warm. It’s a lovely pattern!

This is great, I’m also a knitter and I seriously did once attempt to knit a sweater with maschine knit yarn (or rather thread). It took a lot of time and just isn’t wearable. So yay for sewing handbag cardis! I’d sew view B with full length sleeves and in full length. I’m freezing so easily.
