Completed: The Jenna Cardi (+GIVEAWAY)

15 Sep

In my wardrobe, I have a very small selection of RTW clothing that is quickly dwindling to nothing. Out of those pieces, the majority of them are lightweight knit cardigans. You know the kind I’m talking about – sewn, rather than knitted, lightweight enough to throw in a purse, wearable for all seasons (I dunno about y’all, but I wear my cardigans throughout the summer – air conditioning is tooooo cold for me!). As I’m quickly replacing all my clothes with handmades, the one major hole – other than undergarments (which I’m working on!) – has been those damn cardigans. I love knitting cardigans, don’t get me wrong – but those take loads of time, not to mention even the lightest fingering weight yarn can’t compete with how lightweight a knit fabric is, you know?

I’ve been on the lookout for a good cardigan pattern – not even really for the pattern itself, but rather, the instructions. Y’all, the one time I tried to sew button holes on a knit, it ended up being slightly traumatizing. Then there was that time recently that I tried to use an old RTW cardigan to copy into a handmade one (cutting it apart to use as a pattern – same concept as how I made my striped hoodie). Spoiler alert: it didn’t work out at all. Clearly I can’t hack this on my own. I need someone else to do it for me.

20121202-210149

Also, that cardigan I chopped up? As much as it wasn’t really my favorite – it was the one grey cardigan that went with basically everything. And here it was, chopped up into little bits and, uh, I kinda needed it back.

Jenna Cardi

Anyway, all that being said – right about the time I realized I was making a huge mistake (chopped up cardigan and all), Kat emailed me, saying she’d just launched her new pattern company, Muse Patterns, and would I like to try and review the Jenna Cardi?

UM. YES.

Jenna Cardi

HI GUYS, LOOK, DREAM CARDI PATTERN RIGHT OVER HERE.

Jenna Cardi

The Jenna Cardi comes with a few different options, so you mix and match to create the cardigan of your dreams (I’m not the only one who dreams about cardigans, am I?). You can choose a cropped or waist length version, sleeves ranging from full, to three quarter, to short, and then there’s also an option to include a beautiful curved yoke detail.

I’m a boring person with no imagination when it comes to wardrobe basics, so I chose something plain and simple for my first hurrah – cropped length, long sleeves. The thing about this cardigan that makes it so special, though (I mean, other than the fact that I SEWED IT MYSELF yaaaay for not buying RTW!), is the fabric I used! HOMEGIRL GOT HER HANDS ON SOME MERINO WOOL.

Jenna Cardi

Are we all still freaking out about merino wool or has that ship sailed? Whatever, *I’m* still freaking out over it! Ever since Katie started pushing it on me like an extraordinarily effective drug, I have been trying in vain to locate a US source. That stuff isn’t cheap, even in the best of times – and to ship it all the way from NZ obviously adds some dollarz to the cost.

So where did I find this golden merino ticket, you might ask? Surprise – Organic Cotton Plus, of all places! They are starting to branch out to include other natural fibers than just cotton, which is all kinds of awesome. When they asked me if I’d like to try a little piece of whatever caught my fancy from the website, I stumbled across the merino wool and, forreal you guys, my heart stopped for a nanosecond. There aren’t a whole lot of options on the site at the moment – just the black I have here, as well as a natural colorway (which I almost got, but then the idea of dying that shit seemed too overwhelming. Plus, black is so useful! Even if it photographs like crap). At $33 a yard, it is not cheap – but it’s worth it. That black merino is a whopping 61″ wide, plus, IT’S MACHINE WASHABLE WOOL. Oh, and you don’t pay NZ shipping prices! Win win!

Jenna Cardi

Having used both merino wool from Organic Cotton Plus, as well as the stuff straight from New Zealand – I can confidently say that this is pretty good stuff. It’s soft and lightweight without being see-through, it has a nice stretch and drape to it, and it cuts and sews like a dream. Wait till you see the topstitching on this baby – it’s ridiculously beautiful. Ahh I just love this fabric.

Jenna Cardi

The only downside I can think of is that it does wrinkle up a bit, as you can see in these photos (it’s not nearly as noticeable in real life – otherwise, I would’ve steamed things up before taking photos. Womp whomp, deal with it). Kind of the same thing as linen – just natural wear wrinkles. If that bothers you, you’ll want to stick to something with a poly blend. For me, though, wrinkles are an ok trade-off for natural fibers!

Jenna Cardi

Anyway, I loved my Jenna cardigan so much – I immediately made a second one!

This one is pretty boringly similar to the black merino one, except it’s longer. It’s not quite the longer version – I cropped some off for my proportions – but it does look better with the shirt I’m wearing underneath it, ha 🙂 Instead of using merino wool, I used some wool knit that I picked up at Mood Fabrics when I was recently in the store. This stuff is less drapey than the merino – it’s almost like sweatshirting, except without a fleecy side. It’s also not machine washable, so there’s that. I’ll have to handwash it like I do all my hand knits, oh well.

Jenna Cardi

Sewing both of these was ridiculously easy, by the way. My second version took me all of 2 hours – not bad! I made the bust 32″ and took in the sleeves a bit because they were a little wide. I also had to shorten the sleeves by a couple of inches.

As I mentioned, I was pretty apprehensive about the button bands – but surprisingly enough, the button holes were way less problematic than I was anticipating! I made some test button holes – experimenting with interfacing, tear-away stabilizer, no interfacing – but ultimately went with the instructions, as I figure Kat knows more than I do when it comes to knit button holes 🙂 The button band is stabilized with woven fusible interfacing, and it’s sewn on with a 1:1 ratio (meaning it’s not stretched at all). This gives the knit fabric enough heft to tolerate a button hole stitch without getting eaten into the bobbin area (my former experience with this sort of thing). For the black merino cardi, I also used tear-away stabilizer in addition to the interfacing. For the grey cardi, I skipped the tear-away stablizer and just kept things purely interfaced. Both worked out splendidly!

Jenna Cardi

Another thing I’ll point out is that, while these cardigans are somewhat fitted, there’s just enough ease included to keep the button bands from gaping open. Always a plus in my book!

Jenna Cardi

Jenna Cardi

I’m thrilled that they both look just as good unbuttoned as they do buttoned – which is important to me, as a cardigan-wearer. I usually button things up, but it’s nice to have unbutton options:)

Jenna Cardi

Jenna Cardi

Here are some ~extreme~ close-ups of the merino wool cardigan. Check out that topstitching! Ughhh it’s so beautiful! I did add a little more topstitching than called for in the pattern – I wanted to tie in the topstitched button bands and button holes, so I included it at the shoulder seams and along the bottom band. Plus, it’s just beautiful. Seriously.

Also, how bout them buttons? These are also from Organic Cotton Plus. I know black and brown is generally frowned upon as a color combination, but I like it 🙂

Jenna Cardi

Grey cardigan close-up 🙂 Boring buttons are from my boring stash.

So what do you think – are you team sew-your-own-cardi yet? I hope so, because Muse Patterns has hooked me up with an extra pattern to giveaway! 😀

Oooh first! Firstly I want to say I need the cardis for air-conditioning also. Coming up to summer it is imperative. Also that price for the merino is pretty good. Here (in Oz) I have paid up to A$38 per metre (and there are more expensive ones) but nothing beats machine washable merino! So I’d made hip length 3/4 sleeves!

  2. deadlycraft September 15, 2014 at 7:18 am #

O.M.G. I am making view A, hip length with long sleeves. Then view B waist length (sleeves yet to be determined). Then I am working out how to make view A into a v-neck version and I am going to make about 100 of them. Awesome!

  3. Siobhan September 15, 2014 at 7:19 am #

Oh, what a great pattern! I totally need cropped cardis in every colour now that summer’s on its way. View B, with 3/4 sleeves, waist length, would be perfect in a rainbow of colours!

  4. Tina Spear September 15, 2014 at 7:19 am #

Yay! Thanks for this opportunity to win a free pattern. I, like you, was wanting a cute cardigan pattern as I am cold natured also. I want to make the hip length with long sleeves now, then in the spring I would like to make the shorter version to go with summer dresses & tops. I have learned to knit, but am afraid to try knitting a cardigan & agree with you that it takes longer than sewing. Sewing is my first passion.

  5. Joey Hendricks September 15, 2014 at 7:22 am #

Love it. I’d make the cropped version first. It looks so good!

  6. Colesworth September 15, 2014 at 7:25 am #

I would definitely make a version that included the cute shoulder gathers ;o)

  7. Jessica Hurst September 15, 2014 at 7:26 am #

I like both views but I think I’d go with the longer one first. I’m curious about this merino wool you’re speak’in of. I’d have to try that. 😉

  8. jumliana September 15, 2014 at 7:26 am #

I also dream of cardigans, and it is also a little hole of my own-sewn-wardrobe, since I always use cardigans and can’t really find adequate fabric to sew some. I reaaaally like the cropped version, just as you made it, long sleeves and all. Perfect!
Should I not be a lucky winner I will sure buy this pattern.
    Loved you reviews 🙂

  9. Anna September 15, 2014 at 7:29 am #

I’ve been wanting a great cardigan pattern! I need this – I wear one EVERYDAY! I’d start with the cropped length and long sleeves – I find that this look works best with full/flared skirts and dresses.

  10. skaapie September 15, 2014 at 7:32 am #

So pretty. Also wear cardigans all summer long.

  11. Margo September 15, 2014 at 7:32 am #

Ohmygosh! I love this cardi Lauren. I have a few sweater knits waiting in my stash for this pattern right now…a beautiful garnet colored one is on my mind…
Thanks for the giveway, your cardigans look terrific and your workmanship is impeccable!

  12. Little Leys September 15, 2014 at 7:32 am #

Thats lovely! View B with cropped waist and 3/4 sleeves is my fave.
    Thank you!

  13. clairenholmes September 15, 2014 at 7:34 am #

Mid length and long length in a range of colours. Seems like fate as just yesterday I found a shop with a great range of NZ merino!!

  14. Heather L September 15, 2014 at 7:34 am #

Love the cardi! Those kind are an RTW staple in my closet. And I loved that you found merino wool…I’ve been looking for some merino wool fabric like Icebreaker brand clothing, my husband loves them for working out and I’d love to try making them myself…any thoughts on how your merino compares to that? Either way I might be giving it a try. Thanks for the heads up!

  15. Little Leys September 15, 2014 at 7:36 am #

Forgot to say, the Julia Cardi from Mouse House Designs is also pretty awesome for a lightweight throw on cardi!

  16. Anniak September 15, 2014 at 7:38 am #

This pattern is amazing. I’m in a desperate need for some cardigans, too. So please, please, please let me win it!

  17. Mel September 15, 2014 at 7:40 am #

I like the version with the shoulder gathers. thanks for the chance!

  18. Rachel September 15, 2014 at 7:43 am #

SUCH a nice pattern…I have some red french terry that would look lovely as a cardigan…with anchor buttons, of course.

  19. Brigid September 15, 2014 at 7:45 am #

Love this!! I’d like to try this in a pink knit …the short version– it’s adorable !

  20. Erin September 15, 2014 at 7:46 am #

Thanks for showing off this pattern. A good cardigan can be hard to find! I’d love to be in the running. Love the waist hem. I’m glad to know organic cotton plus has been branching out. They used to be super pricey for non -cotton fibers. FWIW The Fabric Store has an LA branch and although they haven’t got web ordering up they are great about phone orders. I just got five different colors of plain and patterned merino jersey in the mail from them and it is totally gorgeous. ( shipping was $20 flat rate….)

  21. charlenedanielle September 15, 2014 at 7:47 am #

I loved this pattern as soon as I saw it and I want to make the cropped version with 3/4 sleeves. I’m not sure the yoke style if for me though so I’ll probably just keep it plain. I need to make it soon though as the summer in london is gradually fading away! A ponte Roma perhaps for those extra cold winters days :o)

  22. Jenn C September 15, 2014 at 7:47 am #

    Love!!!! I need this pattern!

  23. Debra Hewitt September 15, 2014 at 7:49 am #

Love your blog! Thank you for offering this. I would make view A.

  24. Emily - Belgian Seams September 15, 2014 at 7:50 am #

I’d love to make this pattern. I’d make Variation B with hip length and the long sleeves. Thanks!

  25. Lindsey September 15, 2014 at 7:51 am #

I’ve been looking for a cardigan pattern! I’m definitely going for view A.

  26. Chasing Happiness (@slauditory) September 15, 2014 at 7:51 am #

I’d make the hip length version with long sleeves and made of cotton to combat Louisiana’s enthusiastic over-air conditioning. I wear cardigans every day!

  27. Elisabeth September 15, 2014 at 7:52 am #

Oh, I just found this pattern the other day, and it’s the answer to my wearing-summer-dresses-in-winter-issue! I need some cardis, and as you say, knitting them takes too long and won’t be as light weight.
I need at least one cropped orange and one cropped blue, to go with my blue dress with orange flowers (not blogged yet), probably long sleeves. And I’d also love to make them in merino wool, if I find the perfect colors.

  28. teri dodds September 15, 2014 at 7:52 am #

I love this pattern! I would make the longer version with long sleeves. And probably one with 3/4 sleeves, too!

  29. Jennifer September 15, 2014 at 7:53 am #

I’ve never ventured into cardi making – although if i had the pattern i would make a lightweight jersey (navy or white) hip length version with 3/4 sleeves!

  30. Breenah A September 15, 2014 at 7:59 am #

Cardigans are missing from my closet too, I don’t even have any RTW ones because I just cannot find the right length (I’m tall, with long arms) so this would be awesome! I’d start with black or brown, then do stripes and everything else I could think of!

  31. Roni September 15, 2014 at 8:01 am #

I have pumpkin colored jersey waiting to be sewn into a cardigan. I’ve had it for a year or so but couldn’t find a pattern. I would make the longer version with long sleeves!

  32. Mandi September 15, 2014 at 8:03 am #

Ooh – so pretty! I’d make hip length, with full length sleeves. It gets cold in the Rocky Mountains during winter! I’d probably make something pretty basic at first – black or dark gray. Then, I might try to mix it up with something fun!

  33. Eirini September 15, 2014 at 8:03 am #

I love the idea of a cardi pattern, as it can be worn with pants, skirts and dresses and it replaces RTW cardis (that usually complement my DIY garments). I can see myself making a couple of cropped wool or ponte cardis for my winter wardrobe.

  34. Kristin September 15, 2014 at 8:04 am #

I’ve been hunting for a good cardi pattern for myself too! The weather is getting cold here in the midwest and I find myself without any 😦 Thanks for the giveaway!

  35. Feminizzle September 15, 2014 at 8:05 am #

I actually just finished knitting a cardigan! But I love the pieced version of this cardi… It’s true that there are some knits that are just impossible to make at home, the fine, lightweight cardis in particular!

  36. Nilla September 15, 2014 at 8:09 am #

I too have been picking my brain on how to replace those RTW knit cardigans for ages!! I even went as far as knitting my own this summer, but of course it won’t be nearly as thin. If I won the Jenna pattern I would buy a lot of “boring” solid knits to supply me with a lifetime of cardigans :))

  37. Kelly T September 15, 2014 at 8:10 am #

I love a good cardigan! I’d do a 3/4 sleeve, cropped length. To start anyway!

  38. lifeisjustduckie September 15, 2014 at 8:12 am #

I loved the blue version on the website and would definitely make something similar to that one! It’s the waist cropped, 3/4 sleeves version.

  39. Michelle Martini September 15, 2014 at 8:12 am #

I’ve been wanting a pattern exactly like this for all the reasons you wrote about! I’d start with the long-sleeved version for fall/winter and make the cropped version for spring/summer.

  40. Vairë Gwîr September 15, 2014 at 8:25 am #

I need this cardigan in my life. Actually I need a bunch of them. Maybe in merino wool as well? Never tried it before, but is sounds scrumptious Please count me in, and thanks for the giveway!

  41. Emily September 15, 2014 at 8:25 am #

I am very glad you mentioned the buttonholes — that was the part I was most concerned with! I think the pattern is super cute. I’d probably make mostly croppedslightly longer versions in both views. Tracking down appropriate fabric is another tricky bit so thanks for the merino wool find!

  42. Ariel September 15, 2014 at 8:26 am #

I think waist-length, 3/4 sleeves, and I’d probably start out with some remnant-table “miscellaneous lycra print” fabric before I even thought about springing for a nice wool knit.

  43. blancapate September 15, 2014 at 8:26 am #

I am so in love with this pattern – thanks for introducing us to it!! I’m the same as you – not sure how to handle homemade cardigans, especially since I don’t knit. And I wear those things every. single. day. at the office. I would love to make the cropped version with long sleeves – I love how your top peeks out the bottom with the cropped length, plus it’s the perfect length to wear with pretty dresses. Thanks for the giveaway!! xo

  44. Amy September 15, 2014 at 8:28 am #

Ah this post makes me sooooooooo happy. On my to do list is ‘find a good pattern to make a cardi’ and now I don’t have to as you’ve shown me the perfect one. I have the same air con issues so a cardigan goes pretty much everywhere with me regardless of what the weather is doing outside. Pretty sure I will make every version in time but start with all the longs what with things heading directly towards winter. Brrrrrr.

  45. Quattre September 15, 2014 at 8:28 am #

I think I would go with the hip version/ long sleeves, and probably in navy blue!

  46. ThreadTime September 15, 2014 at 8:30 am #

This post speaks to me on so many levels! I love the Merino wool! And love Organic Cotton have the natural colorway. I’ve been playing with dyes lately and may have to splurge.

Your cardi’s look professional! Absolutely beautiful job. This is about the third pattern you’ve made that make me want to buy it. And that’s after seeing the pattern itself and not being inspired (no offense to the pattern makers!). I love cardi’s, and after seeing your version, this will have to go on my wish list.

Quick question? I’ve seen the Consew 14TU2345 on sale for $360. It’s billed as a “coverlock” and serger in one (if I’m reading it right). Have you had any experience with it? Or do you have any recommendations on a serger vs coverstitch?

    Thx! Ramona

    • Jenny Cashmerette September 15, 2014 at 8:37 am #

I’m not Lauren but… I have a Brother convertible serger that turns into a coverstitch and I LOVE it! Would highly recommend having a conertible…

    • LLADYBIRD September 15, 2014 at 3:11 pm #

I only have a serger, and no coverlock (yet!). I haven’t personally used that machine, but I have used an all-in-one coverlock/serger (the Babylock Evolve that is my mom’s) and my personal opinion is that that thing is a pain in the ass. Not sure abotu the Consew, but the Babylock one has to be completely unthreaded and rethreaded when you want to switch from serger to coverlock. Sooo annoying! I’d personally rather have two machines.

That being said… $360 is about a quarter of what I paid for my serger (no regrets, obvs, but still… $$$ yikes haha), so that ain’t a bad price! I’d definitely see if you can try it out first, though!

      • ThreadTime September 15, 2014 at 4:21 pm #

Thank you! I never thought about the difficulty in switching. Definitely something to think about.

  47. Jenny Cashmerette September 15, 2014 at 8:36 am #

Dear Lauren. Have you actually stolen my brain? Please give it back. For I just bought this pattern, and was planning on making two versions: one in NZ merino and one in the effin same wool knit that we got at Mood. First crotches, now cardigans… it’s all getting a bit single white female round here.

    • LLADYBIRD September 15, 2014 at 3:08 pm #

Look, I don’t know about you, but I think you are basically my sewing soulmate and if anyone is gonna SWF the shit out of each other it might be us. Right? Right?

Also, that Mood knit is DREAMY. *almost* makes me excited for winter!

  48. Angelica September 15, 2014 at 8:38 am #

Yea!!! This pattern looks awesome. The merino wool sounds sumptuous. I’m really digging the look of your second cardigan. The body length is perfect! I have quite a few black cardigans. But, I think I’d still want to sew one up lol I can’t ever have too much black clothing.

  49. Stephanie H September 15, 2014 at 8:42 am #

I would definitely make this up with 3/4 sleeves like THAT (stupid long arms making full sleeves look ridiculous….).

  50. youngseamstress September 15, 2014 at 8:43 am #

I love this pattern! I would make the version with the shoulder yokes, cropped and with long sleeves. If I could find some, I would love to make it out of merino. Thanks for the giveaway!

  51. Heather September 15, 2014 at 8:43 am #

I’m still pretty new to sewing, but I would love to make the cropped version with long sleeves in black. I’m extremely short, and I have a hard time finding cardigans that fit well!

  52. Cheryl September 15, 2014 at 8:44 am #

Yeah for any cardigan especially in summer AC. I have several cotton knit sweater of the open drapery type but would like to try this pattern. BTW, does the merino wool itch on bare arms?

    • LLADYBIRD September 15, 2014 at 3:12 pm #

It doesn’t itch me at all, but I’m also not sensitive to wool 🙂

  53. SimpleFibreLife (@SimpleFibreLife) September 15, 2014 at 8:45 am #

I’d really like to have a go at sewing a Jenna. As much as I’d like to knit a collection of cardies, I’d much rather sew them in way less time than it would take me to knit one. Would be a great excuse to buy some of the luscious merino I’ve been hearing about. Crossing my fingers and toes!

  54. catherine September 15, 2014 at 8:48 am #

I…..have this deliciously soft, brown knit , that I I picked up at Michael Levine’s fabric by the pound store in Los Angeles on my field trip…. That would be my “tester” Long sleeve, to the waist…. With some groovy vintage buttons from my stash…. Then, I’d have to make one for my Ginger Baby, more conservative in the button category, Then… I’d probably start hacking up my other sweaters and see what I could come up with, I like wearing something catchy at work… shake things up a bit. 🙂

  55. Jana September 15, 2014 at 8:49 am #

Yay for a cardigan pattern giveaway!
I would definitely make the long-sleeved version, we already really need long-sleeved sweaters/cardigans over here and all of my ready-to-wear ones … have seen better days, if I may just understate it a bit. I don’t like the cutesy shoulder detail because I’m not a vintagey kind of gal, so I would skip that. I’m unsure about the length, but probably the longer one, or some in-between length like your second version.
As for fabric … sigh. I’m allergic to wool, so that’s out, and knit fabric choice over here is really bad. So I don’t know. I’d have to hunt around for something appropriate. I really should do that anyway.

  56. hashigal September 15, 2014 at 8:50 am #

Which view am I gonna make? Are you kidding me?!? ALL OF THEM!!!
This looks like one of those patterns that needs to be repeated a lot. Perfect for the classic black/grey/beige-tone varieties. I’m currently a bit in love with the burn-your-retinas-out pink that’s embracing many a gal to walk the streets of Oz. My life is wrapped around assignments and study at this moment, but come November 7th there’s going to be a frenzy of making stuff. How cool would this be in a loud tropical print? Bird of paradise, flowers galore. Preferably worn whilst nursing a cocktail in one hand and watching the waves roll in.

  57. Helene September 15, 2014 at 8:55 am #

Nice cardigans! I live in cardigans too. I have some leopard print dying to be a new sweater, cropped and 3/4 length. Fingers crossed!

  58. Beth Holmes September 15, 2014 at 9:02 am #

i think i would make the three quarter length sleeve version in a deep green colour. it would match perfectly with one of my tops! 🙂

  59. tabicakes September 15, 2014 at 9:07 am #

I’d love to try out the yoke in view b. thanks for the chance to win!

  60. Lisette September 15, 2014 at 9:11 am #

Yay! This is also a gap I’ve been wondering how to fill. For now I will probably still just buy super expensive fair trade cardigans or something, since my machine eats knits. But someday when I have a lovely better machine I would make many of those long length, long sleeve version As.

  61. Kelley Vito September 15, 2014 at 9:11 am #

I’ve been dying for a cardi pattern! I am going to practice a ton and then get my mitts on cashmere, baby! Oh, how I love cashmere.

  62. Donna September 15, 2014 at 9:11 am #

This post makes for an exciting Monday for me! Love all the versions of the Jenna Cardigan. I need to dress in layers where I live and have been looking for a regular/ non shawl or fall collar cardigan to replace my tattered RTW ones that I wear all the time. BTW, really love your blog and have learned a lot from you. Cheers, Donna

When I started knitting my third (ever) hand-knit cardigan last month, my husband’s question was “How many sweaters do you neeeeed?” Uhm, a lot. You’d think he’d have figured that out given that I’m only ever not wearing a sweater for about 30 minutes a day.

Huzzah for a giveaway! I’d definitely start with the long sleeved, hip length cardigan. I dream of finding the perfect heathered black/charcoal knit fabric, or something in a nice jewel tone green — both of which seem to be tough to find.

  64. RinaL September 15, 2014 at 9:16 am #

Finally, the perfect cardigan! I basically live in them, especially in winter. The first ones would be 2-3 basic ones in grey, brown, black (long style, long sleeve). Then I would attempt a transformation into a V-Neck cardigan. Finally, I would use all my bright-coloured Jersey scraps in combination with some uni basic coloured Jersey to create cardigan-like shirts (those with just a shirt front spliced to the cardigan)- perfect stashbusting!

  65. virginiadaffron September 15, 2014 at 9:18 am #

Oh, for sure I’ve seen this pattern and desired it! I would make view A with the little shoulder yoke thingies. I have also been eyeing up Organic Cotton Plus offerings, so I was glad to see your thoughts on the merino. Keep us posted about how it washes and wears!!

  66. francescapia September 15, 2014 at 9:18 am #

Oh wow, so cute and so why I need right now! I could have written the first part of your list myself, ask too have long since reached the point where it’s rare that I find myself something I haven’t made myself:). Including the knitting part and the aircon part… only thing I’ve never done is cut up something to copy it – have you seen Stephanie linceum’s book?
And merino is the best! I got some lovely stuff from a seller in NZ on Etsy and haven’t made it yet. But I know what I’m making now – whether I win or not (and I never win anything any hows) I will get this pattern, love that high band. I’d start with a cropped long sleeve version too.
Oh, and the black brown stuff is tooootal bullshit. I remember the kids at school singing blue and green should never be seen unless there’s a colour in between… and then there’s red and orange and pink – oh, and bright blue with black – like your hair – all fab combos.
Thanks for the intro to this new patternista!

  67. Shannon Smith September 15, 2014 at 9:18 am #

I would choose variation B, waist length with 3/4 sleeves. So cute!

  68. linynp September 15, 2014 at 9:19 am #

Ok now that’s one heck of a cardi!!!! View a hip length ling sleeve in the merino wool (haven’t tried that stuff yet but you are making it irresistible !). Color yet tbd!

  69. askouras September 15, 2014 at 9:19 am #

OOO, I’ve been wanting to try out wool knits/merino wool but it always seemed too extravagant for a simple wrap dress or something of the ilk. But yes, I definitely need to start replacing my old cardigans, even though I’m nowhere near close to having a totally self-made wardrobe. Perhaps one day…

  70. Show and Tell Meg September 15, 2014 at 9:20 am #

Ooh, your cardis look lovely 🙂 I’ve been oggling this pattern since I first saw it a few weeks ago and it is just what I need in my life, lol. I need to recreate a few rtw sweaters and this would be perfect. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

  71. Amy September 15, 2014 at 9:20 am #

You can totally sew a lightweight cardigan! You just need to buy some sweater knit fabric. I just made a striped one and I wear it all the time. I’ve tried knitting but I’m pretty terrible at it.

  72. senjiva September 15, 2014 at 9:21 am #

All the cardigans, is what I’d make. But I suppose I would start with some remainder stripes I bought on a whim at JoAnn’s. I always have the problem that if I get a card big enough for my bosom, then the armholes are all big and winging. The ones you made are great!

  73. justsewtherapeutic September 15, 2014 at 9:22 am #

As I’m now struggling through the cable ribbing on the Peggy Sue the prospect of a two hour cardigan looks very appealing! It’s a gorgeous pattern, love your grey version, going to put my knitting away and search out some wool jersey!

  74. Alice September 15, 2014 at 9:23 am #

I love cardigans! Right now it is 94 degrees out but the building that I spend all day in is violently air-conditioned due to the ancient heating system breaking. And I don’t knit, so I can’t knit my own cardigans, so I have been ogling this pattern for ages! I would make the cropped length with the shoulder gathers, and probably the long sleeves (as we’re going into winter, supposedly.)

  75. Diana September 15, 2014 at 9:29 am #

OMG. Perfect! I would make both variations, many times, probably always cropped. I’d need to get my grubby little hands on the Colette Guide to Knits, too, given my lack of serger.

Speaking of, do you think you could comment on the sewability of this without the assistance of a serger?

    • LLADYBIRD September 15, 2014 at 3:03 pm #

As long as you’re not using a super drapey/difficult knit, I dont’ see why you couldn’t sew this on a standard sewing machine 🙂 I just use my serger for everything because it’s there!

  76. Tiffany September 15, 2014 at 9:29 am #

I love this! I would make this in EVERY color. I’m a busty lady, but short, so RTW cardigans never fit me–ever. I’m so happy this exists, and can’t wait to start making them!

  77. Alexandra September 15, 2014 at 9:30 am #

This pattern looks great and now I want to make cardigans in every color of the rainbow. I would probably start with a white hip length long sleeve view A, as my current white cardi needs replacing.

  78. onejolie September 15, 2014 at 9:32 am #

3/4 Length sleeves with crop length so that I can wear over my short sleeve dresses in my office (baby its COLD inside!). BTW- I swore I wasn’t buying more fabric and now I’m sitting here drooling over wools. *facepalm*

  79. smonakey September 15, 2014 at 9:35 am #

Variation A, long version is just the classic cardi look. Perfect for a twinset, even. That’s the version I’d go with. That’s a lovely pattern. I can see it getting made up in multiple fabrics as my standard go-to A/C-freezing cover up. Nice!

  80. Bernadette September 15, 2014 at 9:38 am #

Lauren, love your cardi versions and will make those for myself. After reviewing the pattern on the Muse website, I have to ask if you made any alterations to the waistband?

    • LLADYBIRD September 15, 2014 at 3:05 pm #

Nope! Both waistbands are sewn as-drafted 🙂

  81. poldapop September 15, 2014 at 9:40 am #

Gorgeous! I love the wide band at the bottom, and the topstitching. I want to make the short sleeve cardi (to wear with high-waisted pencil skirts), the waist length with 3/4 sleeves and a hip length with long sleeves. Okay, so I really want to make them all but that’s where I would start. And I’ve got some magenta wool jersey and some teal wool jersey in my stash, just waiting to be turned into the perfect cardi! What a great pattern!

  82. Anneh September 15, 2014 at 9:43 am #

Oh my gosh, this is exactly exactly the pattern I was wishing existed! Can’t wait to try it out. I would make the longer version, full length sleeves, and wear it with everything – I am a cardigan freak:)

  83. Clover September 15, 2014 at 9:43 am #

Hi, you need to look up The Fabric Store LA. The have all kinds of merino wool knit. It’s from NewZealand and it’s amazing. They don’t really have an online store but they do post some pictures and you can call them and they will mail it to you. The price is very reasonable.

  84. Carolyn September 15, 2014 at 9:45 am #

This is serendipitously perfect timing for me! I’ve wanted to try out sewing a cardigan for ages but there were never any good patterns. And I don’t feel comfortable enough with knits to mess about much with franken-patterning with them. This pattern looks ideal! I would instantly make a brown cardi with this. I’m in dire need of a brown one, was thinking I’d knit one, but guess what? I have some brown wool jersey that will be perfect to sew up with this pattern. And I was wondering just this morning what to do with the wool jersey! I’d make the cropped version with the shoulder yokes and 3/4 sleeves. In fact, I’d probably make several of that version – but would love trying out the colour-blocking once I’ve got my basics covered! Thanks so much for sharing this, I may not be able to wait until contest ends before I just go ahead and buy this pattern, lol.

  85. Nicole September 15, 2014 at 9:46 am #

Crap, I need that pattern. I’ll wait just long enough to see if I’ve won here (fingers crossed!) and then I’m just gonna buy it. As a resident of Northern California, I’m pretty much obligated to wear a cardigan every day. I love the version with the cute gathers at the shoulders.

  86. Mary September 15, 2014 at 9:47 am #

This is the perfect cardi pattern I’ve been looking for!

  87. Tyan September 15, 2014 at 9:50 am #

Heck Yes! I’m always on an epic quest for cropped cardigans – and depending on the styles that year, I can’t find them! So excited. I’ll do the cropped with 3/4 sleeves. I’d love some wool, but will probably start with some cotton to practice.

  88. sallie September 15, 2014 at 9:51 am #

Yay for cardi’s!!! The sewing community really was missing a good cardigan pattern, I agree! I’m also a year round cardigan wearer (air conditioning in the south is NO JOKE) and only have a few sad, misshapen RTW knit cardigans to my name these days. Love your merino wool and wool knit versions. They look totally pro!!

  89. erinalter September 15, 2014 at 9:56 am #

oh, i would totally make a cardi! thanks for the source for merino wool as well. i am apparently finally grown up enough that i am now particular about using quality fabrics:)

i would make the waist length cardi, and i would put long sleeves on it. winter is coming. (said in dire tones.) and layers are so very helpful.

  90. Suzanne Mills September 15, 2014 at 10:01 am #

I love cardigans. I would make the long view with the long sleeves (its amazing how hard it is to find a long sleeved cardigan, everyone seems to make them with 3/4 sleeves!).

  91. Deborah September 15, 2014 at 10:08 am #

Thanks for highlighting this pattern – the hip length with long selves looks like a perfect layering piece for Fall.

  92. Fooniks September 15, 2014 at 10:09 am #

Ooooh, this looks great, I love both of your cardigans. I’ve been mulling over making a cardi out of store bought fabrics but didn’t find a pattern and felt too lazy to draft it myself(tsk-tsk)

I think first I’d make the short version with long sleeves and then the longer version with long sleeves. I’d like to keep it simple(ish) as I would use it as a neutral for outfits. I might even make a short sleeved version for the summer.

  93. Margo September 15, 2014 at 10:09 am #

Oh my, I need this pattern! I’ve been searching for a lightweight cherry red cardigan for years, but haven’t found one that will fit my picky choices. 🙂 I think I would go with hip-length, 3/4 sleeves since I”m always pushing my sleeves up. Thanks for the heads-up on the merino wool. Both of your cardigans look fantastic.

  94. Catherine from Canada September 15, 2014 at 10:09 am #

JUST what I was looking for too! I’d make the cropped version with long sleeves in black merino, cream/ivory merino, scarlet wool, saffron wool, grey wool, and maaaybbee teal as well.

  95. lisa g September 15, 2014 at 10:20 am #

ahhh that pattern is too perfect! i think i need one of each… i hate buying those cheap cardigans because they always get holes and/or the hem doesn’t hit me in quite the right place… love yours! that merino sounds amazing. i may need some of that too…

  96. Katie September 15, 2014 at 10:22 am #

I’d make the full length version with full length sleeves since I just knitted a cropped card. I never thought about sewing one until you posted this. Gaaaaa, the possibilities!

  97. Bridget September 15, 2014 at 10:24 am #

I’ve been needing to replace my cardies for a while now but can’t bring myself to spend the money on basics that don’t really duty or suit. Needless to say I love this pattern, it’s just what I’ve been looking for and the shoulder detail is really cute. First though I’m going to sew a couple of basic versions of view A, if only I could find merino in the UK…

  98. redsilvia September 15, 2014 at 10:28 am #

Super cute! I’d start with view A waist length and long sleeves. Then I’d work out any fit tweaks and make a billion more in all combos. Is that wrong?

  99. Kelsey September 15, 2014 at 10:29 am #

I live in cardigans! But for the opposite season of you….the heat from heaters is often too much for me indoors (so I need a layer I can remove) but I like the cardigan outdoors in the winter (I’m from MT originally so it’s the summer heat I don’t get along with). I would make pretty much every sleeve variation in a waist length and a long sleeve in hip length. Probs a 3/4 in hip length too.

  100. Kari September 15, 2014 at 10:34 am #

Your cardigans are awesome. I was just wondering the other day where I could find a cute, basic lightweight cardigan pattern that wasn’t drapey, and here it is! I would make them in all the colors- I live in SF and wear the things year round,

  101. Victoria L September 15, 2014 at 10:35 am #

I have been eyeing the Jenna Cardi. I like to jazz up plain outfits (black dress/plain top & jeans) with colourful cardigans so I can see some striped versions, longer length with 3/4 sleeves in my future.

  102. Ruth September 15, 2014 at 10:37 am #

Love your cardigans – they look like great wardrobe staples. I wear cardigans like this all the time so this pattern is definitely on my to-sew list. I really like the blue colour-blocked version on the website so I might have to have a go at recreating that!

  103. Tilly Buttons September 15, 2014 at 10:40 am #

Ooh I was just talking about this pattern yesterday. I’m

    • Tilly Buttons September 15, 2014 at 10:43 am #

Aarghh trying to comment on a train with crap connection! As I was saying, I’m well up for making this with the yoke version, just need to find some suitable fabric. Anyone know a goid source in the UK?

Great to hear that the buttonholes were okay to sew, I was wondering about that. Will you be wearing this in London? 🙂

      • LLADYBIRD September 15, 2014 at 3:05 pm #

Hell yeah I will! You might even get sick of seeing it on me, ha! 🙂

  104. mysewingmelee September 15, 2014 at 10:49 am #

I was so excited to see this pattern launch on her blog! Being long in the torso, RTW cropped cardigans are TOO cropped, and the regular length ones are a weird length on me. I would probably make a bunch of these, but I’d start with a (slightly lengthened) cropped 3/4 sleeve version with that fabulous yoke detail! Thanks for the giveaway!! 🙂

  105. sbmeist September 15, 2014 at 10:50 am #

I have some wool in my stash that is destined to become a cardigan this fall — I would love for it to be a Jenna! I have gotten a lot of my wool from NaturesFabrics.com. They are worth checking out.

  106. Cindy September 15, 2014 at 10:54 am #

I love cardigans! I would make the yoke version, hip length with long sleeves. It would be perfect for the black & white striped cotton blend knit that I bought ‘just because’.

  107. Megan September 15, 2014 at 10:55 am #

This is a hole in my wardrobe currently, so I would be super excited toget my hands on this pattern. I would do a hip length long sleeves to start, followed by a waist length view B. Because obviously you need 2!

  108. jennlaing September 15, 2014 at 10:55 am #

Oh! I wear cardigans almost every day to work as a teacher. I knit, so I have many heavy caardis but no nice light ones. I would make a navy and white striped cropped version in heavy bamboo jersey! I might also manage to track down a particular Nani Iro knit I’ve been hunting for! I could make so many!

  109. Carol Carrier September 15, 2014 at 10:58 am #

I’d do hip length to wear with pants. So excited to have this option

  110. Tatiana September 15, 2014 at 11:01 am #

I love lightweight cardigans and this pattern is so cute! I would make version B with the yoke and gathers (waist length, long sleeves) to go with my Miette skirt from Tilly’s pattern.
    Thank you for the giveaway!

  111. mamiecamille September 15, 2014 at 11:03 am #

Love it! I’d make the long sleeve version in purple, I really need one like this!

  112. SeeKatSew September 15, 2014 at 11:04 am #

Dream pattern! I would start with the shorter version with long sleeves so I could wear it with higher wasted skirts, with Merino jersey of course.

  113. Helen September 15, 2014 at 11:07 am #

View B. Short version because I’m short and it’s been hard finding cardigans that don’t hit at my mid-hip. 3/4 sleeves! Thank you!

  114. Anne September 15, 2014 at 11:08 am #

Recently tried to get into knitting and failed so this is totally what I need! Love all the options.

  115. Arnika September 15, 2014 at 11:12 am #

I am also a fellow merino wool pusher, I’m from NZ but live in the UK now and every winter I start up again telling everyone how amazing it is. I think my boyfriend is finally convinced after 4 years of harrissment to buy merino but the rest of my friends are sadly yet to understand. It’s so expensive here so I have to wait until friends from home come to visit so I can get them to bring some over fabric for me (very infrequent!) but have some currently on route via a cousin for a winter cardy and this pattern looks perfect- long sleeves, long waist for me. More merino on me the better. The cost is still a killer but it’s like an investment right?

  116. catdoesit September 15, 2014 at 11:20 am #

I was already on the diy cardigan wagon! Have you seen the burda draped cardigan? But I want one with buttonband, just like yours, pliz! ^^

  117. Birgitte September 15, 2014 at 11:21 am #

Ah, this totally fills a gap in the indie pattern market at least – looks great! I’m swooning over the curved and gathered details on the yoke, that is just lovely!

  118. Laurel September 15, 2014 at 11:22 am #

Very cute cardigans! I love the more 1940s looking variation, I think it would be a great cute look for lazy days when you just want to wear something comfy 🙂

  119. Alicia M September 15, 2014 at 11:24 am #

Oh seriously!!! This is what I have been looking for too! I’d love to make the 1940’s inspired yoke version with 3/4 sleeves and hip length. I have a lovely black merino wool in my stash just waiting for this!

  120. Velda September 15, 2014 at 11:25 am #

Beautiful make! I love wool but my skin is so senstitive that I shy away from most of it. How is the feel of the merino? Looks awesome in the photos!

    • LLADYBIRD September 15, 2014 at 3:07 pm #

It’s very soft and not at all scratchy, but I’m also not sensitive to wool at ALL. If it helps, my mom is a little sensitive (not a true allergy, but she can’t wear a plain wool sweater without an underlayer!) and merino doesn’t bother her at all 🙂

  121. Susan - aka Knitters-Delight September 15, 2014 at 11:27 am #

I love version a and would do the same as you – replace all of the my store-bought (Target mainly) staples that I keep purchasing. This is a very exciting pattern for me.

  122. Iselin September 15, 2014 at 11:30 am #

Oooh, I’d love to try my hand at a cardigan! I need a new long, grey wool cardi, as the one I have is worn to shreds. Here in Norway merino wool fabric is relatively easy to get hold of, and I’ve actually got some thick merino interlock that I believe would be perfect for this pattern. Fingers crossed!

  123. jojokanner September 15, 2014 at 11:42 am #

I would definitely be able to RAID MY STASH of knits and fleece to make a bazillion cardigans to go with my workout gear. I get hot working out, but I need something light to throw on afterwards when I hit the grocery store and post office. 🙂

  124. Kimberly September 15, 2014 at 11:51 am #

I’d love to try making a cardigan. I’d definitely go for the hip length with long sleeves for extra warmth. Not sure what fabric I would use, but the wool sounds nice. Thanks for another inspiring post!

  125. Angela Dean Kennedy September 15, 2014 at 11:53 am #

I am so happy to learn about this pattern. So far I’ve sewn up the Julia cardigan. Something with buttons would be perfect. I’ll wait until the giveaway is done before I buy the pattern. It’s a must have! Fingers crossed.

  126. Sue Parrott September 15, 2014 at 11:55 am #

Oh I love this! I want the longer length like you gray one, in fact, I want the gray! It’s perfect!

  127. Cecily September 15, 2014 at 11:55 am #

I would totally do Variation B, waist length, longs sleeves and COLOR BLOCKED in Green and Maroon y’all!

  128. Kim September 15, 2014 at 12:00 pm #

I would make the shorter version (to go with my shorter body 🙂

  129. Amy September 15, 2014 at 12:00 pm #

View A with long sleeves – Fall is almost here!

  130. Jenny September 15, 2014 at 12:02 pm #

I love the curved yoke variations, I would have to make view B. Such an adorable pattern.

  131. Jacey September 15, 2014 at 12:14 pm #

Love the cardi! Hmmmm, even if I don’t win I’ll have to pick this one up. I really like the cropped cardi with long sleeves and yoke detailing in a contrasting colour.

  132. Katherine September 15, 2014 at 12:16 pm #

Ooooo!!! I saw this pattern and said to myself, “Self, you need this pattern!” It looks like a brilliant way to reduce reliance on shop-bought cardis! I have some left-over muted teal merino that might just be clamouring to be made up into this here pattern . . .

  133. Aimee O September 15, 2014 at 12:25 pm #

I love cardigans, my office also suffers from AC being turned onto arctic at all times. I’d start with a hip length cardigan with long sleeves. I usually just buy cardigans in basic neutral colorways, but it’d be fun to sew up a large scale flower print or some other print to add some variety and a splash of color now that winter is on it’s way!

  134. Wrenna September 15, 2014 at 12:26 pm #

YAY! Thanks for bringing this pattern to my attention, I’ve also been on the lookout for the perfect cardigan. I’d make the cropped version with long sleeves. Yours are both amazing!

  135. Amber Hunter September 15, 2014 at 12:28 pm #

Oh my! This really is the dream cardi pattern! Something like this is so needed and so hard to find! I would probably make a bunch of the hip length view B as winter is right around the corner. I need staples first so black, white and red. Then branch out into crazy/fun combos. Thanks for the review!

  136. Kristen September 15, 2014 at 12:31 pm #

Yay a giveaway, so exciting! I would definitely want to make a long sleeve waist length… as for with or without the yoke, I’m not sure, I love them both! It would definitely have to be a game time decision.

  137. Denise September 15, 2014 at 12:37 pm #

Me please! I was just thinking I needed a good cardigan pattern!

  138. Stefanie September 15, 2014 at 12:38 pm #

Ohhh…. I really like the yoke detail of view B, and being tall, I would love to have a long sleeved cardigan. RTW long sleeved cardigans always seem to be too short, so I wear them 3/4 length. I would love to make a ton of these in all combinations and colors – I could wear a cardigan every. single. day.

  139. caitlinagogo September 15, 2014 at 12:38 pm #

First, I need to make like a million of these because I wear cardigans everyday and RTW ones are never worth the money, I just keep spending money on things I hate. That said I would stitch up Variation B at hip length in long sleeves, in a lightweight black something before doing anything else, because my current black cardigan is embarrassingly tattered.

  140. KaoruMarie September 15, 2014 at 12:41 pm #

I love cardigans so much that my husband makes fun of me whenever I buy a new one. And then he’ll start giving them names, like the ‘party cardigan’, the ‘conservative one’, the ‘work cardigan’, even though they’re all the same, just different colors. So yeah, I def need a cardigan pattern so I can make my own instead of caving into buying more J Crew cardigans, which are my fave.

  141. weefrills September 15, 2014 at 12:48 pm #

Merino is the best!! Yay, Job!

  142. MarrieB September 15, 2014 at 12:50 pm #

I wear cardigans almost every day, this pattern is great! I’d probably start out with boring basic black, cause it can be hard to find a good black cardigan with the proportions I like.

  143. Cari September 15, 2014 at 12:52 pm #

Three quarter and cropped to wear with dresses! So cute!

  144. vinthillvintage September 15, 2014 at 12:54 pm #

Hook me up, LT! I’m dying to get my hands on this cardi ever since I saw it on TMS. Love both of yours and my wardrobe has the exact same gap.

  145. sewtall September 15, 2014 at 12:54 pm #

HIp lenght using some knit I have in my stash.
Thanks for the opportunity to win a pattern. That IS some sweet top stitching.

  146. Alli September 15, 2014 at 12:55 pm #

Awesome!!! I have also been looking for sewn cardi patterns and haven’t found one I liked till now. I want to sew view B right now! 🙂

  147. Emmely September 15, 2014 at 12:55 pm #

Cardigans are my wardrobe staple! I’d probably start with a hip lenght, long sleeved version.

  148. sehardy September 15, 2014 at 12:55 pm #

I have been seriously lusting over this pattern ever since I saw it – I would love a cropped version with the yoke!

  149. Maria September 15, 2014 at 1:00 pm #

I’ve never sewn a cardigan but I’ve knitted plenty so this would be an awesome win for me. I’d like to try view A but with 3/4 length sleeves – at least for my first one, haha. I also like the idea of contrast cuffs, neckline and button band. Maybe in a print fabric! Subtle but really cool up close.

  150. Jessica R September 15, 2014 at 1:08 pm #

I’d love to have a couple of bold coloured cardigans to brighten up my dull work wardrobe!

  151. sherri September 15, 2014 at 1:17 pm #

I love the cropped version. I don’t have any cropped sweaters. I definitely need some.

  152. Kirsten White September 15, 2014 at 1:30 pm #

I just made a lady skater in navy merino and have been searching for a cropped cardi patterns go with – how good would this look over the top of the LS!!! The good news for me is that you have save me from hacking one of my RTWs to bits in a vain attempt to make a rub off….thank you, if you haven’t succeeded I’m pretty sure i’d fall at the first hurdle! I’d make from silver grey merino version (post Xmas, after three solid months of hinting and leaving post it note clues all over the house) or maybe a linen jersey?!?

  153. Annika September 15, 2014 at 1:30 pm #

I love it! I don’t usually wear cropped sweaters because my bust is so very much larger than my waist, but I think I would like to give it a shot. 3/4 sleeves of course.

  154. Fröbelina September 15, 2014 at 1:32 pm #

And that’s why.. you never cut open your favourite cardi 😀 I love that you like Arrested Developement and especially I’m a fan of your quote. I am using it a lot 😀 I also like “NO TOUCHING” 😀 haha 😀
To your cardigan: It looks so neat! Every detail is so perfect, what great seams 🙂 I wish someone would give me some merino fabric! And that pattern! I want it! 🙂 My wardrobe also misses leightweight cardigans and I had a favourite one that looked something like that one! Also I don’t like knitting dark colors, so I will never have a dark cardi unless I win this pattern and sew one 😉

  155. sewcookgardenrepeat September 15, 2014 at 1:33 pm #

You are CERTAINLY not the only one who dreams of cardigans. I dream of wardrobe full of tshirts and cardigans that I can wear to work or on the weekend. I’m definitely waist length, 3/4 sleeves, no curved yoke. Awesome 🙂 And I can be reached at carleeandrea dot smith at gmail dot com.

  156. Beccy September 15, 2014 at 1:59 pm #

My waist length long sleeve all purpose cardi got holes in the sleeves and went bye bye last winter. Making a new one that fits better, and out of washable wool would be brilliant. Thanks for the feedback on the pattern and the giveaway!

  157. Jo September 15, 2014 at 2:12 pm #

Ooh!! I’ll make ALL of them please! I’m rather taken with those shoulder gathers though so I’ll start with that, cropped length with three-quarter sleeves. And then a zillion more! My local fabric store has a particularly good selection of sweter knits so I reckon I’ll just work my way through it 🙂

  158. Jayne September 15, 2014 at 2:13 pm #

I am in love with the sample on the website with the lattice pattern fabric and contrast bias on the hip. I need to find a similar fabric to I can rock that out in view a, long sleeve hip length! Gorgeousness.

  159. denimskirtsetc September 15, 2014 at 2:14 pm #

Looks gorgeous. There’s definitely a gap in the pattern market for a lightweight cropped cardi. Thanks for alerting me. I would love to win a copy. I would make the cropped one.

  160. helen September 15, 2014 at 2:16 pm #

It will be waist length with long sleeves for me. That pattern is just what is missing from my life. I’m trying to live without RTW but I haven’t got the patience or time to knit my own cardi so I’m stuck with wearing one dk grey one I bought 18 months ago.

  161. Katie September 15, 2014 at 2:23 pm #

Wait til you come to London, there’s a treasure trove of merino wool knit in Cloth House in Soho. I’ve already made a cardigan in the most dreamy double-faced wool from there, so I’d probably buy more and do some fun colour-blocking on the yokes of the Jenna.

  162. Jane September 15, 2014 at 2:23 pm #

Next time the Fabric Store is having a sale on merino I can pick some up for you to keep the costs down.

    • LLADYBIRD September 15, 2014 at 3:02 pm #

If you are serious, I will totally and unashamedly take you up on that offer 🙂

  163. Rox Guillemette September 15, 2014 at 2:24 pm #

I totally understand how pumped you must be: I too have been looking out for a perfect cardi pattern. I hate buying them because I always settle for something that’s ok, but not perfect. Most times, RTW cardis have flimsy fabric, stretches out too much or shrinks in the wash, and sometimes the cut is just plain weird. And don’t get me started on the dreaded button-hole-gap.

So yeah, really looking forward to trying out this beauty: it looks like perfection to me! I’m partial to the cropped version with long or quarter length sleeves (perfect over a dress!).

  164. Edie September 15, 2014 at 2:24 pm #

Your cardigans look fabulous–better than RTW with that perfect topstitching. Thanks for the tip about the fullness in sleeves; I’ll take out some of the fullness too. I’m another cardi dreamer and my must have is the longer version in charcoal grey merino.

  165. Aura Oriano September 15, 2014 at 2:29 pm #

gah!, I love it! The options are endless but I would definitely try the waist length 3/4 sleeves first.

  166. clare September 15, 2014 at 2:36 pm #

Everyone has a favourite cardigan that they wear to death. I like the idea of the two-tone version. But you’re black and grey versions are probably the most practical. Great pattern, there was definitely a hole in the market.

  167. Lynda Stevenson September 15, 2014 at 2:37 pm #

Your cardis look awesome! I’ve been looking at that cardi pattern and wondering if I should purchase another pattern – I sew all my knits in merino – just love it and as I’m from NZ it is readily available – keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. Both of your versions look great, would be hard to decide which style to make first!

  168. lauraborealis September 15, 2014 at 2:39 pm #

Ooooh… I have a houndstooth knit that needs a project. A cropped View A would be perfect for it.

  169. Annie September 15, 2014 at 2:41 pm #

I like B, long sleeves, waist length. I’d make one solid-colored (boring) one, and then maybe try some Alabama Chanin techniques to gussy it up a little.

  170. Patricia September 15, 2014 at 2:46 pm #

I love both versions, but I probably prefer the second one. I’ve been looking for a decent cardi pattern. I’m so going to have to hunt down some affordable merino wool in London!

  171. Kat September 15, 2014 at 2:52 pm #

Oh man, yes! This is the pattern I’ve been looking for for ages! I’m gonna go with the hip length version, long sleeves – maximum coverage for winter. I like the look of view B but would probably make view A in a really boring colour and then embroider crazy stuff all over the yoke. Oh yeah.

  172. Stevie September 15, 2014 at 2:55 pm #

I would make the long sleeve, waist length. I also had a great (perfect) grey knit sweater, that was just tight enough in the right places that sadly fell apart. I think I would try this to replace it and eventually do other colors.

  173. alanaKNITS September 15, 2014 at 2:56 pm #

I’ve been looking for a cardigan pattern! I would make the long body, long sleeves, since that would get the most wear from me. I’d probably start with a basic knit fabric, but would love to get my hands on merino wool.

  174. Wendy September 15, 2014 at 3:01 pm #

Ooh lots of hip length long sleeves for Autumn then cropped ones should we get a warm spring/summer next year in England 🙂

  175. Leez September 15, 2014 at 3:02 pm #

I am in the same spot as you – I love to knit cardigans, but I am not knitting them in laceweight. I love the merino wool – I might even buy some and drip dye it for a galaxy look. Honestly, I’ll probably make a bazillion of each – I love cardigans.

  176. Dee September 15, 2014 at 3:11 pm #

I’m also a cold person and always have a cardi in my bag…I hate the button bands on those cheap ones as they always gape for me – I’m a size 12 but have an E cup so I generally have to buy size 16 if I want to do all the buttons up….I’d love to do a fba on this cardi and have it fit me properly!

  177. Liz September 15, 2014 at 3:13 pm #

Ooooh! I would make the long sleeve long cardi…and bless her for making this pattern because yes, cardigans are a gaping hole in the DIY world!

  178. Dee September 15, 2014 at 3:18 pm #

I’m a cold person and always have a cardi in my bag. I hate the RTW ones I buy to – I’m a size 12 but have an E cup so I have to buy a size 16 if I want to do up anymore than the first 2 buttons otherwise it’s a gaping nightmare! I’d love to get this pattern and do a fba on it

  179. Angelina September 15, 2014 at 3:26 pm #

OMG I hope I win! I’d love to see some of my own cardigans. All of my rtw ones pill so badly after just a few wears. I’d probably start off making view A with long sleeves, but that yoke detail is awfully pretty! Hmmmm… I’d just have to make 2!

  180. Kelly September 15, 2014 at 3:36 pm #

I’ve been looking for a basic cardigan pattern for ages and this seems like a really good option! I would make up View A, probably in a grey or blue

  181. Ash P September 15, 2014 at 3:38 pm #

    I like variation A with long sleeves. I’m a knit fabric kinda girl…maybe I’l try a ponte knit 🙂

  182. Toria September 15, 2014 at 3:42 pm #

Your cardis look awesome! I’m someone who wears cardis a lot too, so would love to give this pattern a go. I’d go for the hip length with three-quarter sleeves, I seem to spend a lot of time pushing my sleeves up anyway!

  183. Jillian September 15, 2014 at 3:43 pm #

I’m a sewing newb and your blog has been an awesome inspiration for me as a beginner! After your recent post on the Belcarra Blouse by Sewaholic Patterns, I went on over and snapped the pattern up and made one, which was a resounding success : ) So thanks!
I would love to try out this cardi pattern (because too many cardigans is not a thing). Also, I live in Canada. It’s cold here, yo.
I’m thinking the long variation with three-quarter length sleeves. My favourite cardi combo!

  184. Carol September 15, 2014 at 3:46 pm #

I too have a cardigan fetish 😀 view A in black as a girl can never have too many black cardi’s

  185. Candace September 15, 2014 at 3:47 pm #

That.is.awesome! First of all, both of your versions are amazing. Merino is still the bomb – never fear! The first one I’m going to tackle is waist length with long sleeves. Then, who knows? The color block versions are super sweet!

  186. Philippa September 15, 2014 at 3:47 pm #

I’m guessing this pattern will be a massive success. I’ve been looking for a great basic cardi pattern for a while. Living in the UK cardigans are a daily necessity! I would love to make cropped length with long sleeves for a bit of a vintage vibe, to brighten up my boring winter wardrobe.z

  187. Hayley September 15, 2014 at 3:53 pm #

    I’d make the cropped version!

  188. Carolyn B September 15, 2014 at 3:59 pm #

OMG Love! Definitely want to try the shoulder detail cropped version with short sleeves for the southern hemisphere summer. Funny it seems so normal for me to be entering this giveaway on a US blog when I live a few kilometres away from Kat in beautiful windy Wellington NZ. The world is truly an extended village.

  189. whatmousemakes September 15, 2014 at 4:01 pm #

I have the same hole in my wardrobe and have been searching for the right pattern! This could be it!

  190. colleen September 15, 2014 at 4:12 pm #

wow! love these cardis, but my fav is the longer version.

  191. Christine September 15, 2014 at 4:19 pm #

I too am in a serious cardigan dilemma. Seems all the ones I bought are now aging and needing mending or a color update. So I’m in the market and would love love to be making my own instead! I picked up some fabric last spring with a cardigan in mind. Not gorgeous merino, but a good start! The long hem is really nice and the fit looks ideal. Keeping my fingers crossed…

  192. Birgit September 15, 2014 at 4:22 pm #

That is such a perfect wardrobe staple! I need it! The short sleeved cropped version would be so cute with a high-waisted flared midi skirt, for a vintage vibe.

  193. Gina Z September 15, 2014 at 4:24 pm #

I like the long sleeve hip length one. Love the way the plaid is worked on the pattern model version.

  194. Laura September 15, 2014 at 4:36 pm #

I wear cardigans all the time. Like all the time. Short sleeves in summer and I have a selection of rtw merino wool long sleeved versions that are well over 10years old. It has now come time to let two of these go so I’d be making the hip length long sleeve version in a cornflower blue merino from my stash and another short sleeve version in a cream wool.

  195. Brittney September 15, 2014 at 4:39 pm #

I would make view A, 3/4 sleeves, hip length in something bright.

  196. Rachel Meddoms September 15, 2014 at 4:49 pm #

The variation a, hip length with long sleeves is my Jenna cardi favourite. I like it’s fitted classic shape, which I hope to team up with some soft fluffy grey with cream animal acrylic print knit. Cream buttons and top stitching will make a feature without being over the top!

  197. Shannon September 15, 2014 at 4:57 pm #

I want to make variation A, hip length, 3/4 sleeve. Thanks!

  198. kaloskraft September 15, 2014 at 4:58 pm #

Oh man I love cardigans…and never seem to have enough! I would probably start by making a hip length Jenna with 3/4 sleeves. I really could use a new heather grey cardigan-I wore out one I love. And I could always use more mustard in my closet…is that bad?

  199. Ashley September 15, 2014 at 5:02 pm #

Perfect! I made a knot cardigan last year by copying one of my ready made ones but I never put buttons on it because my machine does crappy buttonholes even on woven. I love the shoulder yoke option on this patter. Very cute!

  200. Anonymous September 15, 2014 at 5:02 pm #

Ooooh this is EXACTLY what I need in my own handmade wardrobe project. Cardigan + handmade dress is my wardrobe these days. I’d start with the hip length with 3/4 sleeves (I just push long sleeves up to 3/4 anyway), probably in a basic black. Or maybe a bright color–mustard or cobalt…

  201. mahlicadesigns September 15, 2014 at 5:22 pm #

Im working on core wardrobe, so it would be basic black for me. I only own one cardigan sweater. I guess I’m more of a dress jacket sort.

  202. Ellen September 15, 2014 at 5:23 pm #

so on love with this pattern. I guess my stash contains enough knit fabric to make at least 8 sweaters. gogogo destashing!

  203. mdefilippoMegan D September 15, 2014 at 5:32 pm #

I love this! I’d do long sleeves in the short version in a neutral colors. Perfect for fall!

  204. JamieLMac September 15, 2014 at 5:39 pm #

I love 3/4 sleeves. So I would adjust the pattern for that. I loved the variation b. It gave it a little bit of visual interest. I too love cardigans and it’s so hard to find a simple damn cardigan! WHY!?!

  205. Linda T September 15, 2014 at 5:45 pm #

Oh, I would go with the regular sleeved (3/4 length) hip length version. Don’t do much wool in my part of the country – not that much cold weather, so I would probably choose a cotton or rayon blend in gray or navy–or maybe even red!

  206. alessandra September 15, 2014 at 5:52 pm #

I would go with a full length view A cardigan using a light wool probably. I moved to California recently and the A/C is insane in some places, need a little cover up! Plus, I’ve got a small torso and NOTHING looks right on me!! The proportions are out of whack!

  207. Dana W. September 15, 2014 at 6:12 pm #

I love the longer version with long sleeves. Perfect for the Pacific Northwest this winter!!

  208. Ruth September 15, 2014 at 6:28 pm #

WORLDWIDE?! Fo’ shizzle! I’m in! FIRST, I’d make the long sleeved version, view B in something neutral, so that I would have a seemingly plain cardi with some kick ass detail. Boom! Then… I’d roll the dice to see what’s next. Yep.
Totally want to get to a point where I have an almost handmade wardrobe. Go you!

  209. CindyM September 15, 2014 at 6:30 pm #

I’m a short-waisted gal, so finding cardigans the correct length is a rarity. I’d make the cropped version, with the shoulder yoke view – such a darling detail.

  210. Amiria September 15, 2014 at 6:36 pm #

I’ve always wanted a mustard yellow cardi – I’m thinking probably the full length with long sleeves.

  211. mauude September 15, 2014 at 6:41 pm #

Oooohhh I would love to sew a cardigan for myself! I would sew the hip length with the long sleeves version because it’s already freezing outside apparently. It looks so comfy… Perfect for the winter!! I love your version in black 🙂

  212. Nicole September 15, 2014 at 7:03 pm #

I would love to make the long sleeved hip length cardi to replace the store bought one I lost traveling last week.

  213. Erika September 15, 2014 at 7:06 pm #

I need them! All of them! because I need to throw all of my RTW cardis as well, they are all…well…a bit manky to tell the truth. Yuck!

  214. Melissa September 15, 2014 at 7:12 pm #

Love the cardigans! I would make a cropped blue wool cardi 🙂 Aaaand thanks for including Gob in the post – that totally made my day!

  215. Stephanie September 15, 2014 at 7:13 pm #

I need this! I would make the same versions you have, they’re so versatile!

  216. Annabelle September 15, 2014 at 7:29 pm #

Nearly 300 comments already, everyone wants to make this sweater – including me! The decades that it would take me to knit a sweater in a fine gauge are definitely not worth it. I would love to make the Jenna Cardi in all of the views, but I would probably start with view B, full length and long long sleeves – winter is coming. Oh, and can I also get in on Jane’s offer for stocking up on merino wool on sale? Seriously.

  217. Jen September 15, 2014 at 7:31 pm #

I’m so inspired. We are coming into our warmer months at the bottom of the world. A gorgeous 3/4 sleeve cropped cardigan in a light weight wool would be just perfect for now, with a short sleeved version to follow.

  218. Rennai September 15, 2014 at 8:04 pm #

Wow this pattern looks great it makes me bubble with so many ideas for showing off great fabric obviously plain works but lace, patterned or ribbed and you wouldn’t know it was the same pattern over and over again it would look so different. I would make the version with little gathers first.

  219. oaklandbex September 15, 2014 at 8:10 pm #

oh man it’s getting crowded in here:) we’re all hungry for mid layers! i’d make the long version with the 3/4 sleeve to help out the oatmealy one just like it that i got from old navy 10 years ago and is a serious workhorse (how is some of their stuff such garbage and other ok?) thanksllllauren!

  220. eileen September 15, 2014 at 8:15 pm #

i love cardigans and wear them year round too- and i’m a terribly slow knitter to handle my need for cardigans. what great options on this pattern. i’m digging the yoke detail w/gathers- sweet.

  221. Veronica September 15, 2014 at 8:32 pm #

I lost a lot of weight and since then I get cold easy so being able to make a cardigan for all seasons would be fantastic and since I can knit this pattern is the perfect answer.

  222. LoriAnne September 15, 2014 at 8:37 pm #

I’ve been looking for a cardi pattern to use in the winter. In South Florida that’s all you need to keep warm on those “cold wintery days”. I’d make both options to go with all of my outfits.

  223. Beth B. September 15, 2014 at 8:37 pm #

I have a J.Crew cardi in black just like this, but it has no spandex and sags like crazy. I’d love to make my own!

  224. opalspeacock September 15, 2014 at 8:43 pm #

Great work as per usual. I would make version a, waist length, with 3/4 sleeves. I like the look of black and brown as well, once you break one “rule”, the rest are irrelevant. Thanks for having the giveaway.

  225. christinehaynesdotcom September 15, 2014 at 8:48 pm #

YES! I’ve been eyeing this pattern because I’m not a knitter but I love cardigans and every time I buy one at Target or wherever, I feel guilty about supporting that yucky industry. I’m happy to see the plainer variation and I just happen to have some organic wool knit in my stash! Oh, and I’m going to go buy it now, so don’t enter me to win. Give it to someone else 🙂

  226. Genevieve September 15, 2014 at 8:58 pm #

I love both cardis! The waist-length, long sleeved cardi is my favorite.
    Thanks for the giveaway:)

  227. Mikelyn Jones September 15, 2014 at 9:03 pm #

I would make the longer version. Our winters are generally mild (off and on) and I could get away with a wool knit cardi regularly.

  228. Rebecca September 15, 2014 at 9:22 pm #

Love this pattern!! And fabric choice, too. Here in Aus we have much better access to the merino wool & I think I’d try the same! I’m thinking the short sleeve, waist length, maybe in a fun spring colour for our seasons. Would love to win!

  229. Holly September 15, 2014 at 9:37 pm #

I would make a black, 3/4 length sleeve with the pattern since I really, really miss my old black cardigan that I had to replace with a gray one a few years ago.
    Thanks for the give away!

  230. Katie Perry September 15, 2014 at 9:46 pm #

WOW I need this in my life! I am a cardigan fiend and would LOVE a great RTW alternative. View B with the contrasting cuff/hem/shoulders is amazing!!

  231. Lorraine September 15, 2014 at 9:49 pm #

I love cardigans! I agree that air conditioning is waaayyy to cold. I am thinking view B, hip length, and probably 3/4 sleeves – maybe full length. Or, since I will probably need more than one, I can do both!

  232. Susan September 15, 2014 at 9:51 pm #

Oh my, I wore a hoodie with a blouse today! I would make the Jenna Cardi, long sleeved, hip(ish) length. Thanks for the opportunity!

  233. Suzie September 15, 2014 at 10:07 pm #

I love your cardigan! This is a basic my warderobe is lacking, too! I would make a couple of waist lenght pieces, to wear over dresses. And a few hip lenght cardigans to wear to jeans and skirts. As you see, I have big plans 🙂

  234. Ryann September 15, 2014 at 10:38 pm #

Id make the full length with long sleeves…to start. But I probably need a lot of these.

  235. Heather M September 15, 2014 at 10:56 pm #

Just what I’m looking for! My first will be A, 3/4 sleeves, longer than waist, a green to go with the Smokey green paisley wool challis work dress that’s next on the list. Thanks for the tips on sewing w/o a server, & the button holes. Great post!

  236. Liz B. September 15, 2014 at 11:24 pm #

Oh my gosh, I would love to win this pattern! I’d make a dozen versions of view A, with 3/4 and full sleeves.

  237. Ruth Bignell September 15, 2014 at 11:31 pm #

I have a beautiful light piece of bamboo knit in my stash begging to be made in a long cool summer cardi! Thanks 🙂

  238. Kate September 15, 2014 at 11:37 pm #

I would be really keen to try this – particularly keen to learn how to buttonholes in knit!

  239. pennysewvintage September 15, 2014 at 11:38 pm #

I love a good cardigan. They’re perfect year round and good for layering. I would love to try out this pattern in black merino wool! I would probably start with the longer version and maybe shorten it for my body. Thanks for reviewing this pattern; I wouldn’t have discovered it otherwise!

  240. Erin September 15, 2014 at 11:43 pm #

    This is perfect!!!

  241. docksjo September 16, 2014 at 12:30 am #

If it wasn’t for the fact the I have had no sewing time at all for the last couple of weeks this would all ready be a part of my wardrobe, like you the one gaping hole in my handmaids and lightweight cardigans (preferably thin cotton lace) that I can wear as is in the summer and underneath a think wool in the winter. I love the shoulder flap version and the short to go with high wasted skirts and dresses so I think that will be the first.
There is one thing I wont try to replace with a handmade version any time soon and that is my really cold wether coat that is water prof and stuffed with dun and the has kept me warm to below -30 degrees Celsius, It an amazing coat.
    docksjo http://docksjo.com

  242. ginaambroseg September 16, 2014 at 12:32 am #

    I. WANT. THAT. CARDI! I go through RTW cardis so quickly– I either leave them on the back of a chair after a meeting, or tear a hole on the sleeve/cuff, or wear them so much they are permanently stretched out. I would love a pattern to make my own cardis! Most of my cardigans are solid, so I would use the pattern to make an awesome sweater knit patterned cardi… I’m thinking big floral pattern, or maybe an oversized herringbone. something graphic and fabulous.

  243. memadeland September 16, 2014 at 12:43 am #

wow! I got a little discouraged when I saw the amount of comments. It seems this pattern is a hit 🙂
I like your versions more than the ones made by Muse patterns because you have a bit more room in it.
In my stash is sitting a piece of knit fabric (for some years now) with a bold pattern and I had in mind to make a cardi out of it but until now I didn’t find a good pattern. In Belgium, we don’t have these small pattern making companys and I haven’t seen a nice cardi in the Burda magazine yet.
As for knitting the same here: not yet enough patience to knit a whole cardi with very thin yarn.
If I could use this Pattern, I would make the cropped version with long sleeves. I love the round yoke but with my fabric you wont notice it.

  244. Annika September 16, 2014 at 1:12 am #

Wow, the pattern that I’ve been waiting for! I’ve been hoping for more than a year that an indie designer would release a cardigan pattern!
Using lots of neutral cardigans, I would probably make version A first – hip length, with long sleeves, in black. After that I would experiment with a colour blocked version! Grey and purple, perhaps?
Thanks for the giveaway! Even if I don’t win, I’ll definitely buy the pattern anyway!

  245. Rachel September 16, 2014 at 1:22 am #

That is an amazing pattern. I wear about a millino cardigans, so I’d love to make up my fave – 3-quarter sleeve cropped in neutral colours. Then, I could make cardigans that specifically match my other handmade stuff! I’m thinking specific greens, orange, and the coloured ones to go with singlets. I think I’m going to be making cardigans forever at that rate…

  246. Emily September 16, 2014 at 1:53 am #

I love that you made two cardigans straight away! I can’t wait to use this pattern, my first pick will be a waist length three-quarter sleeve in black merino-boring but perfect for work! And then I will probably make it in all colours of the rainbow as my wild card is that I live near a textile factory where I can get merino and merino blend fabrics for cheap – NZD$10/m! Yay for living in NZ!

  247. Alison September 16, 2014 at 1:55 am #

Hi, Love the pattern and your cardigans look amazing I would make the cropped version with 3/4 sleeves first. Would this work in double knit??

    • LLADYBIRD September 16, 2014 at 6:42 am #

I don’t see why it wouldn’t! Just make sure you size up if you are using a fabric that doesn’t have a high stretch content 🙂

  248. Mady September 16, 2014 at 2:29 am #

Lovely cardigan! I’d make the long version with long sleeves first in a grey sweater knit. Perfect for fall!

  249. Angelica September 16, 2014 at 2:29 am #

How exciting! I’ve been looking for the perfect cardigan pattern! I would make the waist lenght version with shoulder yoke and 3/4 sleeves, maybe with a contrast yoke and bands like the promo pictures from her site. I have an amazing charcoal bamboo knit in my stash that would make a lovely cardigan.

  250. Helen // Grosgrain Green September 16, 2014 at 2:29 am #

This really is my dream cardigan pattern. This this pretty much the only shape I wear. Love the idea of a merino version. Interestingly, I never wear black cardigans. My best “neutral” cardigan I own is a red/coral colour. It just seems to go with everything. I could do with a green/turquoise one though, so that would be my preferred make, if I can find the fabric!

  251. accordion3 September 16, 2014 at 2:31 am #

Hip length, long sleeves, without the yoke, and I think my eldest would snaffle it before I could even dream about trying it on. I would make a series of them in different colours. My eldest would then request/demand on in a bright colour for her to where in the ice rink, to school, on her bike, she’s a cardi lass like you.

I ADORE merino wool. 20 years ago I made my wedding dress from the summer weight merino suiting fabric. Draped beautifully, and was the ideal fabric. I use wool whenever I can, much prefer it to any other fabric.

Living here in Melbourne, Australia means I can get wool easily. It is only international patterns that are a problem..

  252. Thelxi September 16, 2014 at 3:05 am #

Ooooh I need this! 😀 I’d definitely go for the 3/4 sleeves and the second variation, waist length. All my RTW cardigans are cotton, I’d go for cotton in this one too..

  253. Naomi September 16, 2014 at 3:43 am #

They must have been reading my mind! Just today I reached for my go-to black, thrifted Cardigan and noticed all the little holes everywear… ooops! I’d sew up he version that goes down to the hip and add long sleeves. And I’m totally tempted to order some merino jersey…

  254. Rachel September 16, 2014 at 3:47 am #

aah it is the perfect cardigan pattern! even if I don’t win I think I’ll definitely be buying it!

  255. katiebelle September 16, 2014 at 4:59 am #

Love this! Have the perfect royal purple merino for the cropped version in my stash. Thanks for the giveaway!

  256. Bernice September 16, 2014 at 5:10 am #

I love your cardigans! Thank you for the very informative post and for the giveaway opportunity. I’d make the waist length with long sleeves. The merino wool sounds lovely.

  257. Ellen September 16, 2014 at 5:25 am #

This pattern looks perfect! I wear cardigans all the time, they’re so versatile! I would love to make the waist length one, in a nice polkadot knit 🙂

  258. Emma September 16, 2014 at 5:25 am #

What a beautiful pattern – so many possibilities! I’ll make variation A, long sleeves first, because I need to increase my wardrobe staples, but this pattern has limitless options. Definitely one I can use again and again.

  259. Pamela H. September 16, 2014 at 5:34 am #

Yeah, I’m interested! I have some great black wool from Turkey I’ve been saving for the right pattern. The Jenna is perfect for it.

  260. Hari September 16, 2014 at 5:58 am #

Can’t knit. Need more cardigans! I’d make them all. In all the colors of the rainbow!

  261. Kelly September 16, 2014 at 6:18 am #

Oh wow, I so need this pattern! I need more cardis in my life! Up until a few years ago, I didn’t own any, and now I can’t remember what I used to wear before! I desperately need to start knitting some, but am not quite there yet, so in the meantime I would totally make every version of this!

  262. Bobbi September 16, 2014 at 6:19 am #

I love lightweight cardis, too, and have no desire to knit one in laceweight or smaller yarn. I would make the hip length with long sleeves. color? Hmmm…I could use a red one.

  263. Olivia September 16, 2014 at 6:24 am #

Oooh, I want to make myself a cardigan now! I love, love, love cardigans. I wear them all the time. I have a huuuge stash of yarn and patterns only for cardigan making but it takes such a long time to knit… (btw, the most wonderful yarn for cardis is Holst Garn Supersoft 100% uld. It’s cheap and so light! Completely wearable!) Sewing one seems like an incredibly bright idea! 🙂

  264. Sara September 16, 2014 at 6:35 am #

I live in cardis all year round too. This pattern looks like a good wardrobe staple

  265. KathleenS September 16, 2014 at 6:41 am #

The longer one, with long sleeves and plain shoulders. I’d like to make it in merino wool, but I’d probably start with something else just to see how it went.

  266. NorseOtter September 16, 2014 at 6:53 am #

Thanks for the competition! Your versions are simple but effective, I’d definitely go with some good neutrals and nice preppy colours like bottle green, oxblood red and mustard. But I love the stripes and colour block effect for the photos for 3/4 sleeves in View B, I’d definitely want to do something like that for Spring. Effectively I’d want one for every day of the week, for every season!

  267. Claire September 16, 2014 at 6:58 am #

Nice cardi. Love to have a go making one I would make a full length but I like the idea of using different colours on the band maybe a bit of red and navy. Thanks for the giveaway 😄

  268. Meigan September 16, 2014 at 6:59 am #

I really like this pattern. It’s definitely something I would wear frequently. I like the long sleeve version with the plain shoulders.

  269. Tropical Threads September 16, 2014 at 7:11 am #

It looks like it sews up really well. Your cardigans look very professional and fit beautifully.
I’d love to join in your generous give-away. I don’t need cardis really, but I’m dying to try sewing this up as a t-shirt. I love the whole retro vibe.

  270. Threadbare stitches September 16, 2014 at 7:18 am #

Hello! I know what you mean about hand making cardigans – they are definitely lacking in my wardrobe and I’m going to do something about it! Love how versatile this pattern is. First I would make a cropped version with 3/4 sleeves. I think it would be cool to do some embroidery on one shoulder. When I’m feeling bolder,I’d also make this in a dark tartan fabric – something with a blues and greens then use a solid colour on the waistband and sleeve cuffs.

  271. Hélène September 16, 2014 at 7:24 am #

New released patterns often duplicate some that already exist. But this one is really filling a gap. As many other sewists, I also need to make some jersey knit cardigans to complete my homemade wardrobe. This one in merino knitted fabric would be great. Love the view with the gathered yoke and 3/4 sleeves. Your make is magnifique, as usual.

  272. Geni September 16, 2014 at 7:28 am #

I have a few Cardi patterns, but they are all the loose drapery kind, which I do like at times….but this Cardi is way too cute. I don’t have any fabric though, in my 5thousand yard stash. 😉 guess I’ll just have to buy some more if I win… I think I’d like to try that merino you found at organic cotton. Good luck to me!

  273. Kate September 16, 2014 at 8:13 am #

I’ve been on the lookout for a good cardi pattern so thank you Muse Patterns!! I have some gorgeous mint green merino in my stash from when I lived in NZ so I would love to make something with it finally!

  274. Jen September 16, 2014 at 8:14 am #

this pattern is lush! just what i need to lengthen the life of my sundresses and sleeveless shirts – let’s face it, hand knits are sometimes just too hot/don’t look quite right for all occasions. i’m thinking a nice cropped length, three quarter sleeve jobby! but equally long sleeves with a thumb holes. bright colours, but also a charcoal. so many choices!
    Jen
ps – swooning at the topstitching!

  275. Becky September 16, 2014 at 8:18 am #

I’d definitely go for the long-sleeved version– I have the opposite problem that you do, in that I need to find nice layering pieces that aren’t wool! (I’m sadly allergic.) I also knit very slowly, so sewing up a cardigan or five sounds like a great compromise.

  276. knitmo September 16, 2014 at 8:22 am #

I will likely make a cropped, 3/4 length sleeve, long sleeved and about every option under the sun. I wear cardigans all the time. Like you, Lauren, it takes a long time to knit one and my cardigan needs exceed my available knitting time.

  277. Shelly September 16, 2014 at 8:58 am #

I love to sew knits but have been scared of attempting a cardigan so far (probably because of all the buttons!) Yours are gorgeous. I’d go with a waist length long sleeved version.

  278. Béatrice September 16, 2014 at 9:09 am #

    What a great pattern !
I’m looking for the perfect cardigan too !
I’d like to make the hip-length version, with full length sleeves.

  279. Valerie September 16, 2014 at 9:13 am #

Great Pattern to have, perfect style and looks like it fits wonderful,

  280. V Reed September 16, 2014 at 9:22 am #

The top stitching is simply gorgeous. Did you use a double needle to get the lines so perfect? Please don’t tell me you stitched each side of that seam individually!

I love the lines on the Jenna. I don’t care much for button up cardis, though. I prefer mine open front. So I’d make hip length, long sleeve, but no buttons. And I’d extend the length to fall low hip and the sleeve to extend over my hands with a thumb hole. My hands freeze!

    • LLADYBIRD September 16, 2014 at 4:57 pm #

Haha, yes, I used a twin needle! There’s a little stitching guideline in the center of my walking foot – I used that to keep everything straight and even 🙂

  281. shaewc September 16, 2014 at 9:29 am #

OOHHH would love to make the one with the shoulder detail, cropped, 3/4 sleeve to wear over tanks, sleeveless dresses, etc. I love cardis! And being curvy, Cardis really work for me to give some waist definition and coverage to my upper arms. This is the second review I have seen for the Jenna Cardi. The first was from a Curvy collective blogger and now you, so it is obvious it works for all shapes!

  282. sewdooley September 16, 2014 at 9:33 am #

This is just what I needed. Doing the Ready to Wear Fast this year, my existing cardis are all wearing out. I need new ones in just about every color I wear, especially black. All the patterns I looked at before had an old-lady-polyester-vibe. This is the perfect length and fit. thanks for posting.

  283. emcclure2010 September 16, 2014 at 9:48 am #

Win!! Like the rest of you all I have been unsuccessful in my cardigan search. And even the ready to wear ones are hard to find just right plus in my “I’m not really doing much shopping” phase apparently all my cardis wore out. Who knew? 😉 I’m a long sleeve sort of person but I can totally see doing the other lengths as well. And I am in no way going to knit a cardi. I’ve thought about it but it just takes way to freaking long. Also the merino looks lovely! I’ve been looking for wool knits but they are super few and far between it seems. Or massively expensive but I suppose that’s just the way it’s gonna be.

  284. Julie September 16, 2014 at 9:48 am #

I live in cardigans too, especially indoors in summer (which is where we’re swiftly heading here in South Africa at the moment). I’d love to try the waist-length version with 3/4 sleeves first if I were lucky enough to win the pattern, but I’m sure I’d end up making plenty of different combinations sooner rather than later 🙂

  285. Melissa H September 16, 2014 at 9:51 am #

Apply this to the must-sew list, especially hip length with long sleeves in some cream fabric. Maybe with lace details 🙂

  286. Anna September 16, 2014 at 10:07 am #

I’ve been reading your blog for a couple months now, and it’s really inspired me to start sewing my own clothes (thank you!!), I’m excited to start tackling things like cardigans, which I love to wear. I would probably make the longer version of A first, as I am pretty tall, with the 3/4 length sleeves. That merino knit sounds great, but I’ll probably spend too much time today scoping out knits online. So exciting!
    Thanks again for the inspiration!

  287. Kim September 16, 2014 at 10:12 am #

Ooh I have exactly the same sweater issue! So this one will be on my to sew list when I get back 🙂 they look super good! I’m waiting to visit the Fabric store in LA since I believe they have Merino wool there! I’m also going to buy some for a pair of Papercut leggings!

  288. mertxelasierra September 16, 2014 at 10:33 am #

Ei! I love both the pattern and the wool! It gives me great joy to know I am not the only crazy cow out there obsessed with natural fibers! I’ve rejected wonderful patterns and drapes because they were plastic! So, it is always an added difficulty. But that also adds some thrill to the process, doesn’t it? When something is confortable, beautiful, and healthy to the skin and the planet, bingo! ‘m gonna find out if they sell international.

  289. mertxelasierra September 16, 2014 at 10:47 am #

Sorry to bother you again, but do you or anybody happen to know where to buy some waterproof nice coating, similar to this:
    http://mertxeshomesewing.blogspot.com.es/2014/06/the-raincoat.html
It was a wonderful wonderful fabric, but I commited the fatal mistake of machine wash it. I completely destroyed the waterproof quality and had to throw it away (after getting totaly soaked:-(
And now, for the life of me cannot remember where did I buy it. I only remember it was an American website, so please please, help me out…
    Thanks!!!!

    • Pamela September 16, 2014 at 10:57 am #

I’ve been wearing merino for years and would love to make my own! I would make 3/4 length and full length for the first one and then the skies the limit!

For your reader above, I haven’t looked at her fabric, but Seattle Fabrics sells lots of outdoor and waterproof fabrics. Look there.

    • LLADYBIRD September 16, 2014 at 4:58 pm #

Ohhh, I have no idea 😦 I’ve never bought rain coating fabric before. Another commenter suggested Seattle Fabrics for outdoor/waterproof fabrics, so maybe check there?

  290. Eliza September 16, 2014 at 11:19 am #

Wow, what a great pattern to fill the gap before it’s time for heavy jackets. I would do long sleeves, waist length. BTW Muse chose beautiful fabrics to make theirs up. Curious where they got the windowpane knit.

    • Kat H September 16, 2014 at 9:12 pm #

Thanks! I must admit I can’t remember where the windowpane knit came from – it had been lurking in my stash for quite a long time and is an acrylic blend, quite a firm knit. The blue and blue/white striped fabrics are both merino wool, and the chocolate brown is a midweight wool/acrylic blend, all of which are from stores in Wellington, NZ.

  291. Shannon September 16, 2014 at 12:13 pm #

I love waist length cardigans with 3/4 sleeves. Never thought to sew one though!

  292. Erika September 16, 2014 at 12:31 pm #

I love cardigans and would love to make one myself. I would have to try and make one in every combination possible. Yours look wonderful!

  293. French Seams September 16, 2014 at 12:32 pm #

Fab pattern! I tried button holes on jersey once & it was a disaster! I’d make this in 3/4 length sleeve, & in a nice bright coral (trying to bring brighter colours into my wardrobe).

  294. clemensnp September 16, 2014 at 12:59 pm #

OMG I dream of cardigans too! I have plans for a long-sleeved version using some to-die-for rusty orange fine wool knit. I’ve been looking everywhere for a suitable pattern that would show it off and I almost can’t take the Jenna excitement!
    Catherine x

  295. Amy September 16, 2014 at 1:16 pm #

I would love to make a cardi like to the grey one you made. Could I get the merino wool in that grey from Organic Cotton Plus, or would I have to pay NZ prices, or dye it–heaven forbid.

    • LLADYBIRD September 16, 2014 at 5:00 pm #

The wool I used for my grey cardigan isn’t merino – it’s just a plain wool knit from Mood Fabrics 🙂 I don’t think they have it anymore (I bought some of the last of the bolt and then I saw a few other people eyeballing the remains, haha), but you could call the NYC store and ask! 🙂

  296. yarnchick40 September 16, 2014 at 1:22 pm #

I’m a 24/7/365 cardi wearer ~ I would so love to make my own and get rid of these boxy-icky-RTW-loser cardis. I adore that this pattern has so many options! Found your blog thru Jennifer @ 2 Two Frogs, so glad to meet you!
    Lisa Victoria

  297. green231 September 16, 2014 at 1:33 pm #

    View B looks great.

  298. Emily September 16, 2014 at 1:36 pm #

Aaah I so need this pattern! I just moved to San Francisco, where layering is a must at all times. I’ll take one in every color!!

  299. Amy White Schmitz September 16, 2014 at 1:59 pm #

Just like you, cardigans are my still-purchased piece of my wardrobe. I think I’d start with the hip-length, long-sleeved version, but I’d be inspired by that blue one on the pattern’s page. Cute! Thanks for the pattern recommendation.

  300. Lisa S September 16, 2014 at 2:19 pm #

OMG I love them all!!! But I think I will start with version A. What a great pattern!

  301. Sarah September 16, 2014 at 2:25 pm #

This is exactly what I need in my life! Caridgans are so necessary to me, and I like them plain and boring and functional, but that yoke detail has me swooning! My mom is making me some knit fingerless gloves/arm warmers and I’ve been dreaming of lots of 3/4 sleeves to go with them. So I think I’d have to do 3/4 sleeves with the yoke, probably in hip length. So exciting!

  302. Meg September 16, 2014 at 2:26 pm #

I love the long sleeve, but the crop sleeve would be adorable with some of my dresses too~

  303. mirza September 16, 2014 at 2:46 pm #

omg! This IS the perfect cardigan pattern! There is such a huge pattern gap when it comes to cardigans… It drives me nuts! I have the perfect wool knit in my stash, bought a couple years ago, that’s been waiting for some pattern to show up. I guess this might be it 🙂

  304. Shanni September 16, 2014 at 2:57 pm #

I am soooo excited about this pattern! I will be making it first in the waist length, 3/4 sleeve plain version then the waist length long sleeve fancy version b. I’m a little nervous about sewing with wool just for the expense, but hearing your good experience with the button band is encouraging! I am crazy for wool!

  305. Zoe September 16, 2014 at 3:23 pm #

Hi lady! With all these entries I know it’s a long shot, but I have to enter because that cardi pattern was stuck onto my ‘Sewing Patterns I want’ Pinterest board the second I saw it! I’ve been obsessing with how to produce more of my own cardis considering I don’t knit and this pattern looks like it the answer to my troubles! I’m in love with your versions, sooooper useful. I think I’d go for the version with the shoulder yokes with a 3/4 sleeve, longer length in some awesome soft leopard print shizzle that is currently lurking in my stash xxx

  306. lholy September 16, 2014 at 3:55 pm #

Thank you for making me discover this pattern. 🙂 I love cardigans but have a hard time finding the perfect style for sale, making some myself is definitely on my list. Since I don’t knit, this pattern looks very interesting. For starters I’d make a 3/4 sleeve version. Maybe in red. The hard part would be finding a nice suitable fabric… I’d love to take part in your giveaway, thank you!

  307. Sarah Jane September 16, 2014 at 3:57 pm #

Oooh! What an awesome pattern! Yours look amazing! I want one of each version, but I think my favourite is definitely the hip length, gathered shoulder, with long sleeves.

  308. Jodie September 16, 2014 at 3:58 pm #

I love this pattern. Hope I win, but would likely buy it myself if I don’t. I was thinking today that a short sleeve black or grey cardi (waist length) would fill a hole in my wardrobe.

  309. Carrie September 16, 2014 at 4:54 pm #

Those darn cardigans are definitely one of my major handmade wardrobe holes as well and I’m so glad to see your versions of this one! And yay for a US merino source!!!

  310. Liz September 16, 2014 at 5:30 pm #

Long sleeve and hip length is what I would go for given that I am already frantically planning for the snow that could come at any time!

  311. jules September 16, 2014 at 5:36 pm #

same, same and same! Everything in my closet is nice and homemade except for the cardigans. This is it then. The sweaters i own are looking pretty slaggy lately after washing ’em a million times. Thank you Jenna cardigan and muse pattern company and lladybird blogger and organic cotton plus. Let the replenishing begin!

  312. Jackie Thompson September 16, 2014 at 5:48 pm #

I love cardigans year-round, too! I need some new ones, and this pattern looks awesome.

  313. Alex Bradley September 16, 2014 at 7:03 pm #

I love this pattern, I’m obsessed with 3/4 sleeves so would make variation B. Being 5″1 I need every advantage in not looking like a child wearing her mum’s clothes! Love your versions by the way, merino wool is so great to wear, lightweight and washable xxx

  314. Caroline Stagg September 16, 2014 at 7:31 pm #

Long Sleeved Longer body for all this florida air conditioning. you did fabulous job on both the merino and the grey ones.

  315. Stephanie September 16, 2014 at 9:11 pm #

Even if I don’t win this pattern, I’m going to buy it anyway. I will first make the waist version in a nice chocolate brown lighter weight ponte I bought from Joann’s. I would love several of these in different colors and prints. Love love love!

  316. Rebecca September 16, 2014 at 10:00 pm #

I would make a hip length with 3/4 or full sleeves in this beautiful purple wool sweaterknit bought at the FIDM Scholarship store. That’s what I would make first.

  317. Megan September 16, 2014 at 11:04 pm #

I’d like a waist length with short-ish sleeves ( not sure exactly). I’m nervous to try it, but hopefully it will turn out half as nice as yours!

  318. Anna September 17, 2014 at 12:23 am #

Wow! I would make a million versions, being a cardi wearer just like you. The first one would defintitely be with the yokes. So cute!

  319. Claire (iwanttobeaturtle) September 17, 2014 at 12:55 am #

For someone who doesn’t knit (I’m not allowed to bring yarn into the flat while I sew!) and constantly wears cardigans (they are a staple in my wardrobe), this pattern is a must! I love how versatile it is. Great versions, Lauren.

  320. Kate September 17, 2014 at 1:06 am #

Pinned! I really like the extra shoulder detail. Need this pattern.

  321. sewcialwarrior September 17, 2014 at 1:11 am #

Adore this pattern and your versions. Like you, home-seen cardi’s are missing from my Me-made wardrobe and I fell in love with this pattern as soon as it was released. I really want to make a cropped version with the curved shoulder yokes. Fingers toes and everything crossed that I’m picked as my sewing budget this month has been wiped out with the new Gertie sewing book.

  322. charlyderham September 17, 2014 at 1:23 am #

I love version b in 2 contrasting red fabrics (similar to the blue one on the website!) very cute pattern

  323. tracymbt September 17, 2014 at 2:24 am #

Would love to make one in every style to throw over dresses and skirts. I think I’d start with the long sleeve, hip length. Love merino!!

  324. Stephanie September 17, 2014 at 3:56 am #

I would definitely make the variation with the yoke. It just looks so cute! As for fabric, I think I need to go shopping!!

  325. Neroli September 17, 2014 at 6:58 am #

Ohh, that’s cute and so versatile. I like your version but the yoke version is a great variation. I can see many of both these styles working in well in my wardrobe, in merino, of course.

  326. Kelsey Yarnell September 17, 2014 at 8:44 am #

As a librarian, it only seems natural that I make this! I only own one cardigan and as a friend once told me, “I thought cardigans were a requirement for librarians? You have to own one to get into grad school or get hired,” I am clearly lacking in this arena. As you said, air conditioning is freezing and I don’t do much robust physical activity while at work. I’ll most likely stick with something basic as you did for the color but maybe make a three-quarter and a long sleeve each!

  327. Melissa September 17, 2014 at 8:45 am #

    Pick me!
    I’ll be making the short-sleeved version, Variation B, for a 1940’s vibe.

  328. Julia September 17, 2014 at 8:51 am #

I am looking for the perfect cardigan for years as well! I want to try version B in a lot of different colours!

  329. Lexi September 17, 2014 at 8:56 am #

Woop woop! I have been looking for exactly this cardigan pattern like forever! Cropped version with long sleeves in black!

  330. Leslie J September 17, 2014 at 9:36 am #

I love cardigans! I am a librarian, it’s in our DNA. I would make a long sleeve variation A at first–can’t go wrong with the classics.

  331. Carol S September 17, 2014 at 2:31 pm #

I love me cardi’s. Long sleeves for me (I still like to tie them around my neck when not wearing) and the mid length so its not cropped but fits my short waisted torso. I think I’d like a red one.,,,

  332. Angie B. September 17, 2014 at 2:36 pm #

I would make both. Thinking of either a sweater knit or ponte knit.

  333. thejessness September 17, 2014 at 2:42 pm #

I choose style A waist length and long sleeve. I love the wool fabric u used but I would use some fabric with a floral design.

  334. Leanne September 17, 2014 at 4:38 pm #

I love wearing cardis! What a fabulous pattern!!! I love the two tone blue one that is shown, I’d definitely make something similar, I love the wide hem band and shoulder yoke detailing!

  335. anotheryarn September 17, 2014 at 4:46 pm #

How awesome that you are eliminating rtw from your closet. That feels like such a pipe dream for me and my sewing progress. I’m quite smitten with the curved yoke version of Jenna, with either long sleeves or 3/4 sleeves. And think I’d much rather sew a new cardigan than knit a fine gauge black cardigan… (my black cardigan is dying, I’m pretending that because it is black it isn’t noticeable but it probably is).

  336. Kristin Saunders September 17, 2014 at 5:41 pm #

I wear cardis with EVERYTHING. I feel like they cover my back fat. And I’m in love with all the views with this pattern. I’ve tried knitting 3 cardigans now and quit because I get confused. Plus I’d probably be 80 by the time I finished knitting one. But sewing one I can do! I really, really, really need a gold/mustard cardigan to match the fabric for a fall skirt in the works….

  337. melanie September 17, 2014 at 6:34 pm #

i love cardigans and have had this cream merino languishing in my stash for ages. i would make a hip length version with the shoulder details and 3/4 length sleeves. yes! just in time for winter!

  338. bunny September 17, 2014 at 8:21 pm #

The cropped view for sure! It will look great with dresses. And I can finally have a cardigan that will close over the girls!

  339. Ni September 17, 2014 at 9:13 pm #

OMG I would so make the cropped view! It’s lovely!

  340. Dayl September 17, 2014 at 10:52 pm #

Cropped view for me for sure! In a lovely eggplant with some bamboo and some wool content!!

  341. Anonymous September 17, 2014 at 11:32 pm #

The teal version on their site is very lovely. Love the feminine feel of the yoke!

  342. Toni September 17, 2014 at 11:33 pm #

The anonymous “teal version” comment above was from me, sorry!

  343. Nicole S. September 18, 2014 at 5:43 am #

I’d like to make one just like the last picture, view B, with contrasting blues.

  344. Sandra (Sewist-Stitch) September 18, 2014 at 5:50 am #

OMG a whopping 360 comments! I have already purchased the Jenna Cardi, coz these are brilliant for throwing on in the summer – yep I have a couple of RTWs. I have plans to make mine up this weekend, now that I’ve printed the pattern out. I’ve got this beautiful orange Merino http://sewiststitch.blogspot.co.nz/2014/09/the-great-wsbn-sewing-room-tour.htm (I love that stuff, although I recently bought from a shop other than The Fabric Shop and the quality wasn’t as good). No it’s not cheap but it sews like a dream, it washes like a dream and it wears so easily.

  345. Jenna Ohh September 18, 2014 at 6:44 am #

Oh how cute it looks! I would make it a wild one, maybe use sequins etc. 🙂

  346. Juanita September 18, 2014 at 6:56 am #

A cardi that’s not dowdy looking but fitted- would love to make it!

  347. Dalila September 18, 2014 at 9:05 am #

Your cardigans turned out awesome and so much faster than knitting. I mean, I love it but I do have a few makes that I am just going to take apart because I can’t remember where I’m at with them anymore. The one cardigan that turned out okay for me was one I used a knitting machine to make.

  348. Olga September 18, 2014 at 10:20 am #

Love the cardigans! I’m in the same boat of not having enough versatile pieces when it’s still in the 90s outside here in Texas but the office temperature is barely in the 70s. I’m on the petite side so the long version may be too long for me, but the length you have on the grey cardi looks perfect!

  349. amcclure2014 September 18, 2014 at 1:28 pm #

I’d like to get some merino wool. I have fine merino wool underlayers for extreme cold (we don’t get extremely cold here but I went to Arctic) which I love and I’d love a cardigan in this – hip length, long sleeves, no yoke in first instance. Thanks.

  350. rominaguaraz September 18, 2014 at 3:47 pm #

    oooooh ♥

I would make the waist-length version with 3/4 length sleeves. Spring is coming to Buenos Aires and I reeeeally need a cardi (or three).

  351. Gina September 18, 2014 at 11:05 pm #

I love cardigans and I am the wooooorst at knitting! Seriously, I’ve been knitting my first sweater since February. Since it’s getting cooler outside, I think I should probably start sewing some cardigans so I don’t freeze while I’m slowly knitting that sweater! I would definitely start with the longer view with long sleeves because I like basics, but I’m also interested in the view with the shoulder accents.

  352. Crystal September 18, 2014 at 11:40 pm #

Oh merino wool hugs sound good to me and I too have been on the search for cardigan pattern !

  353. chocolatebluenz September 19, 2014 at 1:20 am #

I would make version A with short sleeves as it is now spring and coming into summer soon here in NZ. This would be the perfect way to start using up my merino stash which has at least six different colours.

  354. Helena September 19, 2014 at 2:11 am #

I love the version with the gathers and yoke so I’d probably do that. What type of sleeve I’d make would depend on what fabric I could find.

  355. Anne Lyth September 19, 2014 at 3:52 am #

Wow. Thank you so much for telling about this pattern. I’ve been wanting one for ages. It’s the one real thing missing in my wardrobe. I will probably buy this pattern as soon as your give-away is closed, as there is no way in h*** I will win the give-away with more than 360 comments here. 🙂

I think I will make the view B with the gathered yoke first – in a crop version with 3/4 sleeves. I have a long upper body compared to my legs, so I cant really wear long cardigans. I will try to get hold of a wool/ silk blend knit for this I think. It will be soft and nice against the skin. I do agree with you that the black / grey / neutral coloured cardigans are the best. They will go with anything.

  356. Lucy September 19, 2014 at 6:15 am #

I’d already been sizing this up on Kat’s own blog and now the new Muse website – your versions look great too. I’d make the cropped one first and probably in merino as well (yay for sheep) but blue or purple… Ah, cardigan dreams…

  357. Chris September 19, 2014 at 7:52 am #

I would make view a hip length with long sleeves. I would probably lengthen the cuffs and add a thumb hole so I could cover my hands when they get chilly.

  358. Aurélie September 19, 2014 at 7:53 am #

Your cardis are fucking AWESOME. I can’t believe how perfect this pattern is, as I thought I’d always have to buy my cardis RDW. If I could make one, probably hip lenght and 3/4 sleeves I’d use a gorgeous – although pretty obnoxious 😀 – knit with navy and white striped, and little pink hearts all over that I bought with no idea of what to do with ! I now know they were made to be together ❤

  359. autumn September 19, 2014 at 8:13 am #

i’d actually love to make this same view, also in a merino – maybe a plum color!!!

  360. Paige September 19, 2014 at 8:14 am #

Hey! I have a serious obsession with cardigans. Like…I need help. I can totally see this in an awesome plaid sweater knit or obnoxious chartreuse. Love that pattern!!

  361. Sommer September 19, 2014 at 8:20 am #

I’d love to try this in a print. I wear a lot of black and gray so I love to have a lot of different options for adding some pizzazz.

  362. R September 19, 2014 at 8:34 am #

I would make a long sleeved, hip length version, possibly view B, because I have some bits of gorgeous mad print fabric I bought from http://www.kitschycoo.bigcartel.com/category/fabric-by-type-prints-jersey?page=2 that are left over from making kids clothes, and I could use one for the shoulder panels and have the rest plain, maybe with contrast ribbing. Plus it’d be a good excuse to buy plain jersey from there (as it’s so much better quality than what I can get locally so I’d have to otherwise the shoulder panels would be thicker than the rest) and then I might accidentally get another bit of print….

  363. Angie September 19, 2014 at 8:58 am #

A long View A – I already have the softest black knit for it. And a blue knit for the second one! All that is missing is the pattern. I love cardigans but because of my lovely “assests”, can never find a RTW one that I can close without busting a few buttons. So until I finally learn how to knit my own (a dream I recently picked up trolling through your wardrobe – I blame you Lauren for my new knitting obsession), I would love to sew my own cardigan.

  364. Elizabeth September 19, 2014 at 10:57 am #

I would make the cropped version in reindeer print fabric. Christmas cardigan!

  365. Caitlyn M. September 19, 2014 at 11:05 am #

I would shamelessly fill my closet with View A, long sleeve, hip length cardigans. You can call me a plain Jane, but I would never regret having that simple silhouette in every color of the rainbow.

  366. Laura Arneman September 19, 2014 at 12:18 pm #

I would make view b in a black merino and do the shoulder yokes in some vegan leather I got at a local fabric store.

  367. Meagan September 19, 2014 at 12:46 pm #

Ahhh! Now I want to make ALL the cardigans. Seriously, I’ve been tempted by a couple other patterns, but the Jenna takes the cake for cardis.

  368. powell2317 September 19, 2014 at 2:45 pm #

I definitely fancy trying Variation B – love that extra detail, so cute

  369. Cammie September 19, 2014 at 3:46 pm #

I have this amazingly snugly cardi (in the perfect shade of blue) that magically goes with everything I own. I wear it so much it’s practically part of my skin! So I’d definitely do a preemptive strike and recreate it before it becomes totally threadbare!

  370. Kathi September 19, 2014 at 3:47 pm #

I’m not quite sure how which view I would make first, probably the longer one in grey. I defininitely need this pattern! It’s getting cold outside :)))

  371. redknitter September 19, 2014 at 3:51 pm #

Love this! I’ve knit a whole bunch of cardigans for myself, but the ones I reach for every morning are the thinner RTW ones. My first Jenna would be a waist length 3/4 sleeve in a dark brown to replace a cheap cardigan that recently kicked it.

  372. marcyhmakes September 19, 2014 at 5:34 pm #

I would love this pattern. I have been wanting a lighter weight sweatshirt – I’d probably hack this to use a zipper. I’d make the version A with long sleeves.

  373. Lisa A September 19, 2014 at 10:14 pm #

Yea, I think Im going to need to get this pattern now. Loving all the styles and the cardigan with the different colour combo is awesome looking.

  374. Nikki H. September 19, 2014 at 11:21 pm #

One can never ever have too many cardigans. This pattern is super cute. I’d love one in every length. Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

  375. jenny September 20, 2014 at 1:12 am #

This cardigan is exactly watt I need in my closet for fall.

  376. fashionjuls September 20, 2014 at 1:54 am #

Super cute cardigan!!! I like long sleevd cardigans preferably black)))

  377. MelodyJ September 20, 2014 at 3:08 am #

I want both the long and short one. I’ll make the long one in berry and the short one blue.

  378. minezen September 20, 2014 at 4:59 am #

View A, 3/4 sleeves…could you colour block this? Looks fab!

  379. dorcontest September 20, 2014 at 6:23 am #

I love them both. Now that the fall is around the corner. A cardigan would be superb. I have only one. A red one… that is cashmere and it makes me too hot. I need to have some made for me or go shopping. Seriously…… you are good.
    dorcontest at gmail dot com

  380. Florinda Fraccalvieri September 20, 2014 at 8:50 am #

This cardigan is really cute! You wear it well. It’s an item of clothing perfect in these late summer evenings.

  381. Debbie Cook September 20, 2014 at 9:14 am #

Both of your cardis look great and I know they will get worn all the time. Lucky you to have added such great pieces to your wardrobe! I’ve been eyeing this pattern a lot and would make the gathered yoke cropped version first from some stashed sweater knit.So please pick me, me, ME!!

  382. Michelle Warkentin September 20, 2014 at 10:26 am #

Pick me! I would love to make a cardigan. I especially love that it gives different length options.

  383. undeadgoat September 20, 2014 at 12:20 pm #

Well since my ass is broke and I’m currently working at a Chain Fabric Store where I get a Substantial Employee Discount, I could see myself making a cardigan like this out of a sturdy poly/rayon or poly/cotton knit–I’ve seen bolts reading “jegging knits” on the end that I think would work quite well for a cardigan in terms of not showing through every line of the garment underneath.

  384. Letitia September 20, 2014 at 3:37 pm #

It’s boring but: hip length and long sleeves for the office.

  385. Dana L September 20, 2014 at 6:11 pm #

I would like to make every view! I would start with one in bright red jersey knit.

  386. Ybat September 21, 2014 at 12:17 am #

I would love to make view B. I’m short waisted so most cardigans that I buy are usually to long so I would love to make my own that will fit just right.

  387. Sox September 21, 2014 at 4:27 am #

I like how those look. Like you, I always carry a sweater in the summer -some places (my office) have the air conditioning set at a temperature lower than what people would tolerate in the winter. That always puzzles me.I have some wool jersey (?knit) in the basement to make some colorful ones for this coming winter.

  388. Laurel September 21, 2014 at 7:09 am #

I wear cardigans every day at work! I need dressier ones, and this fits the bill perfectly! I would make view A with 3/4 sleeves (cozy, but nothing to get in my way). Wool knits would be be perfect – breathable and warm. It’s a lovely pattern!

  389. Megan September 21, 2014 at 7:54 am #

I would make variation a with long sleeves in about a million pastel shades in a light knit for layering!

  390. Nadia September 21, 2014 at 8:11 am #

I like the fabric soft and light, not too long, with long sleeve

  391. Sallie September 21, 2014 at 9:52 am #

Ooh, I’ve been looking for a cardigan pattern too. I have some wool/lycra fabric that’s not soft enough for the leggings I bought it for; it needs to be a cardigan…

  392. walkerjdunn September 21, 2014 at 10:55 am #

I love this cardigan pattern! Similarly the biggest hole in my hand made wardrobe are cardigans! I also wear them year round 🙂 I would love to make a classic, hip-length, long sleeved. I also love 3/4 sleeves on these beauties. Your grey makes me swoon!

  393. cogitoergosumisaval September 21, 2014 at 12:22 pm #

thanks for chance, Love the cardigans!
    mail cogitoergosum8587@yahoo.it
Please contact me via email if I win! Thanks so much!

  394. christina | herrlichkeiten.net September 21, 2014 at 1:05 pm #

This is great, I’m also a knitter and I seriously did once attempt to knit a sweater with maschine knit yarn (or rather thread). It took a lot of time and just isn’t wearable. So yay for sewing handbag cardis! I’d sew view B with full length sleeves and in full length. I’m freezing so easily.

  395. Robin September 21, 2014 at 6:42 pm #

Super cute!!! I totally want (NEED) to make this one in a chocolate brown knit– maybe a super soft bamboo rayon blend of some kind? I can also totally see this in sequins– how fun would that be??? Thanks so much for the giveaway! 🙂

  396. sthlivingincolor September 21, 2014 at 10:43 pm #

Would love this pattern! Winter is coming and I could really use some light layers to keep me warm–neutral colors like black and navy that go with everything.

  397. Freya May September 22, 2014 at 1:23 am #

Last in entry- buy still got my fingers crossed! I’m a super slow knitter, so some sewn cardi action is exactly what I need!
    Freya May x

  398. missjoiedevivre September 28, 2014 at 1:18 am #

Wow, I love seeing how popular the pattern is, that makes me so happy for Kat! She’s such a force of nature. These cardis look great on you. I wasn’t going to buy when Kat announced the pattern, as I’m on a pattern buying ban at the moment, but finally caved – just after Kat’s intro sale finished and just before all the giveaways and codes started appearing, hahaha! Oh well, worth it to support a friend, I’ll just make her buy me coffee one day.

  399. Amanda January 25, 2015 at 9:51 am #

Total cardigan girl here too! These are really cute. Great work on those button holes. I’m actually really digging the cropped cardi with that shirt. It gives a “boring” T-shirt and cardigan look a lot of interest. 🙂
