Completed: Kitty Zinnia!

You know what I love almost as much as I love bike fabric?

KITTY FABRIC 😀 😀 😀

Kitty Cat Zinnia + Nettie Crop Top

This ain’t just any ol’ cat fabric though – this is freaking silk chaurmeuse, all the way from LA.

Kitty Cat Zinnia + Nettie Crop Top

When I was in NYC earlier this year, I mentioned to Trice how I was looking for non-quilting weight novelty fabrics – especially something with cats on it. Trice, being the sneaky lady she is, emailed me several months later and said she was going to send me something. I don’t know what I was expecting- but it was NOT this! I mean that in the best way, obviously. I love how the fabric isn’t super loud-in-your-face-cat-print (although, let’s be real – that wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing), I love that it’s black and white, and I love that it’s fucking SILK CHAURMEUSE. What the what? Talk about an amazing gift from an amazing person!

Kitty Cat Zinnia + Nettie Crop Top

I didn’t have a whole lot of fabric to work with – maybe a yard and a half, tops, and it was pretty narrow. A Colette Zinnia seemed like the perfect fit- I have a similar short, pleated silk skirt (I wore it in the photos for my Owls Sweater), and I wear it all the time, especially in the winter.

The Zinnia calls for a loooot of yardage, but I was able to barely eek by. I shortened the skirt by about 4″, which allowed it to fit on the narrow width of the fabric, and cut the pockets out of some bemberg rayon that I had in my stash. It was a close call for sure, but I made it work! I also cut it with the shiny side on the inside, because I thought the matte side looked a little less, I dunno… costumey?

Kitty Cat Zinnia + Nettie Crop Top

Most of the sewing was pretty uneventful. I did have to lengthen the topstitching on the pleats – the pattern has them about 2.5″ deep, but the skirt looked suuuuuper floofy right about my hips, so I lengthened them a couple more inches and that helped. It’s still pretty floofy, but I mean- it’s a cat skirt. It’s already ridiculous enough, you know?

(Yep, my bra band totally gives me back fat hahaha. Actually, I probably have back fat too.)

Kitty Cat Zinnia + Nettie Crop Top

I mean, LOOK HOW SWIRLY IT IS THO.

Kitty Cat Zinnia + Nettie Crop Top

More kitties! Isn’t this seriously the coolest print? Everyone I told about it kind of gave me a weird look until I showed them a picture- and then even cat haters were all, “ooh I want me some of that!”

Kitty Cat Zinnia + Nettie Crop Top

I obviously needed a cool top to go with my super cool skirt, so I made a quickie crop top to wear with it. This is the Closet Case Files Nettie, made in some rayon knit from Mood (leftover from this Jalie top from forever ago).

To crop the shirt, I just cut it along the bottom lengthen/shorten line. I had previously added 2″ length to my pattern, so that ended up being the perfect crop top length. I also tried my hand at widening the shoulders, since they are super narrow on me… I used a tutorial from Colette on shoulder adjustments, but I guess I didn’t add enough width because they’re still SUPER narrow. Unfortunately, I think this crop top has a very short lifespan in my closet because the shoulders are too narrow for it to be comfortable (the sleeves ride up as I move my arms and the shoulders raise and it just doesn’t look good). It’s pretty obvious in this picture how far the shoulder seam is from my shoulder – plus, the arm hole is still way too high. Gonna have to go back and retweak that pattern again, I guess. Ah well! Sewing!

Also, I know you can totally see my bra lumps through this shirt. DGAF.

It’s hard to see any detail at all in this print, but don’t say I didn’t try 🙂

Thanks again, Trice, for the amazing fabric! Guys, she also sent me a BUNCH of bra straps – which means I guess I better start exploring the world of sewing lingerie, yeah? Forreal, though, I just downloaded my first Ohhh Lulu bra pattern. Wish me luck!

What about you? Found any good (literal)animal print, lately?

Oh man – that fabric is AMAZING!!! Lucky lady you are!!

Kitties + Nettie crop top = altogether too much amazingness to process.

Cat print! That’s so cool and I love the skirt, I’ve just started sewing but a cat print skirt is my sewing goal right now.

    • LLADYBIRD August 6, 2014 at 4:22 pm #

A cat print skirt should be EVERYONE’S sewing goal 😀 haha!

  4. Rose August 6, 2014 at 8:20 am #

I love that print and I am a “dog person”. I love the skirt, too.

  5. Heather Lou August 6, 2014 at 8:31 am #

Awesome! Trice is the shit. As for your Nettie back, what about just adding a wedge to the CB?

    • LLADYBIRD August 6, 2014 at 4:22 pm #

Just a wedge to the upper back? Hmm… interesting, I’m gonna have to try that! Thanks for the tip 😀

Admittedly, I’m not a cat lover, but that fabric is AMAZING! Too bad the crop top is too small in the shoulder, it looks super cute with the skirt!

    • LLADYBIRD August 6, 2014 at 4:23 pm #

Yeah, well, the good thing about sewing is that I can always make another one I guess 🙂 All the in the name of learning!

  7. weefrills August 6, 2014 at 9:05 am #

    So darn cute!

  8. melodymcfarland August 6, 2014 at 9:20 am #

Oh yeah I found some outrageously cool animal fabric and it’s on its way to me right now. I am a bird nut and I love the work of artist Charlie Harper. Imagine my freakout when I saw this shit: http://www.fabricworm.com/chhaforbifao1.html

  9. zilredloh August 6, 2014 at 9:23 am #

At first I was like… cats? Where? Then I saw them! Such a great skirt Lauren.

P.S. You’re way too fit to have back fat. I think you’re seeing shoulder blades. 😛

    • LLADYBIRD August 6, 2014 at 4:25 pm #

Ha! They are surprise cats – the best kind 🙂

  10. heather p. August 6, 2014 at 9:28 am #

Cute! I love that the fabric is black and white, so versatile.

  11. smonakey August 6, 2014 at 9:39 am #

I couldn’t even see the cats until I got into the later pics with the closeups of the fabric! That’s so cute! I love prints like that – the ones that aren’t obvious until you look closely at them.

    • LLADYBIRD August 6, 2014 at 4:25 pm #

Yeah, they’re the best! Obvious prints are fun, too, but I love anything with a surprise element 🙂

  12. Kelly August 6, 2014 at 9:43 am #

!! Until the close up I kept wondering where the cats are, which I think makes it a pretty great print! I love anything with cats on it anyway 🙂

  13. Janelle August 6, 2014 at 10:02 am #

    What pattern did you use?

    • LLADYBIRD August 6, 2014 at 4:26 pm #

The skirt is the Colette Zinnia; the crop top is the Nettie 🙂

      • Janelle August 7, 2014 at 7:22 am #

Thanks! Can these only be purchased online?

        • LLADYBIRD August 7, 2014 at 7:26 am #

The Nettie is a PDF download, so online-only, but you may be able to find the Zinnia at your local fabric store 🙂

          • Janelle August 7, 2014 at 7:27 am #

            Thanks!

  14. Sandra August 6, 2014 at 10:46 am #

    HELL YEAH!

  15. thenerdyseamstress August 6, 2014 at 11:44 am #

Love, love the skirt and fabric! I never really considered the pattern, but it’s totally adorable. I think I need to make myself one. Thanks for the tip for lengthening the pleats. I’ll have to try that.

Yes! You should make your own bras! I’ve been meaning to, but I’m a bit scared. I’ve gathered and read all the info I could. Now I just need to start.

Back fat, no! Haha I don’t want to be so straight forward, but I think it’s the bra, might not be the right size.

    Trice, isn’t she so nice?

    • LLADYBIRD August 6, 2014 at 4:29 pm #

Haha you can be as straight forward as you want 🙂 Doesn’t offend me 🙂 I do wear my bra bands really tight (it’s most comfortable for me), so it probably looks too small. I’ve been measured and fitted at a couple different places, including Nordstrom and some indie lingerie places, and I am indeed wearing the right size. The next size up rides up my back haha. Either way – I am ready to be making bras! Don’t be scared! We are in this together! Ooh I can’t wait to share my fails on my blog hahaha

      And yes, Trice is wonderful!

  16. misscrayolacreepy August 6, 2014 at 2:15 pm #

I love that we both made cat skirts! Yours is super cute! We must be on the same cat wavelength haha 🙂

  17. Trice August 6, 2014 at 3:03 pm #

Aww, you are welcome. I knew I should have gotten 2 yards, Oh well. :-/
I love the kitty skirt. It came out so cute. Kitties are the best.

You definitely do not have back fat. I am pretty sure your bra is the cause of the back look. Are you using the loosest hook?

    • LLADYBIRD August 6, 2014 at 4:31 pm #

Naw, girl, the yardage was perfect! I had exactly enough 🙂

My bra band is definitely tight – I find that the most comfortable. I’ve been fitted a few times and I’m in the right size (and yeah, it’s on the loosest hook), maybe I’m just a lumpy person haha

  18. Michelle Rivera (@sewstitchmama) August 6, 2014 at 5:25 pm #

Cat haters? Is that a real thing? More like sociopaths. I can seriously imagine how this feels to wear, it’s so light and lovely! What an awesome gift. I’m definitely going to have to get that skirt pattern!

I eagerly await your Oh Lulu bra. I made the Betty panties, and I love them: http://www.craftsy.com/project/view/betty-lace/87508. (I was trying to win a contest. I don’t normally post my underpants on the internets.)

BTW, be careful of those Oh Lulu patterns. My Bettys got me knocked up. 🙂

  20. Nicole August 7, 2014 at 12:02 am #

That is super cute! I just pulled the Zinnia out of my pile of patterns to work on too, so it was totally awesome to read about it here, especially lengthening the pleats ( my hips stand out enough on their own- they don’t need help. haha). I actually bought a red zebra print last month to make a dress out of. It’s cotton, but not quilting weight. Have yet to make it yet (i’m good at slacking).

  21. Helen // Grosgrain Green August 7, 2014 at 1:20 am #

I’m not a cat lover (sorry!) but I do think this fabric is pretty cool! Lucky you, what a lovely lady Trice is.

  22. missjoiedevivre August 7, 2014 at 1:59 am #

Cats and silk? What could be better? This is truly gorgeous! The crop is really cute, shame about the shoulders. What about taking the sleeves off?

  23. sallie August 7, 2014 at 8:13 am #

This is a great print!! I love how big those cat heads are! Such an awesome gift… that Trice… such a sweetheart! Love the whole look! If this crop top bites the dust I hope you make another swing at a crop top to go with this skirt because it’s seriously the PERFECT pairing!! Also, you’re bra induced back rolls ain’t got NOTHIN’ on mine!!

  24. Kylie August 7, 2014 at 6:40 pm #

Love the stealth cat print! Have you checked out the “leopard print” that’s actually made up of cats on Spoonflower? Yes, I know, super expensive but worth saving for 🙂 My dream is a knit dress (possibly Coco) in it for winter!

  25. Daniela August 8, 2014 at 1:05 pm #

Lovely outfit! I couldn’t “see” the cats at first and was wondering what you were talking about, haha. Not at all obvious.

  26. Elizabeth August 9, 2014 at 1:06 pm #

I love it when adorable designs are made into apparel fabrics and not just quilting cottons! Very cute skirt and looks so different from so many of the zinnia’s I’ve seen in blogland, adorable! Also I am itching to try my hand at sewing undies, with all the free undie patterns out there I really can find no excuse not to try them!

  27. Margo August 11, 2014 at 6:48 pm #

I am always on the hunt for cool novelty prints that aren’t quilting cotton but they are hard to find! I can’t believe your friend found that awesome print in a silk!! WOW! Good for you to be able to eek out a skirt with it!

  28. Kelly August 15, 2014 at 6:25 am #

That fabric is gorgeous, I love the fact that it’s not obviously novelty, until you look at it closely. Also looks like the perfect fabric for a Zinnia – I made one, but the fabric was way too un-drapey and those poufy hips you talk about are just ridiculous in an un-drapey fabric. I haven’t even worn it once 😦
