A few weeks ago, I came home to a mysterious (and heavy!) package waiting for me from Laurence King. “Hm, I don’t remember ordering anything from LK recently,” I said to Landon as I tore the shit out of that package.

Draping: The Complete Course by Karolyn Kiisel is more than just an instructional book for producing draped patterns – it is a massively intense course – complete with over a thousand color photographs and an accompanying DVD to supplement the various lessons – to guide you through the process of draping. From the necessary tools (and before you ask – yes, you need a dressform to use this book the intended way), to preparing your muslin, to draping lessons for specific patterns and fabrics, this book covers everything. Seriously, everything.
Dresses, bustiers, pants, blouses, skirts, knits, coats, gowns, bias – you name it, this book is gonna teach you how to do it, and it’s going to give you a famous pattern to rip off in the process (Glinda’s pink gown from The Wizard of Oz? Check. Something slinky and bias worn by Jean Harlow? Check. Crazy tuxedo jacket designed by Dolce & Gabbana? Check!).
While I haven’t had a chance to start the draping projects in the book yet (and believe me, I am chomping at the bit to dive headfirst into this!), I have really enjoyed just reading it cover to cover like it’s a romance novel. Each section starts off with a bit of history (which I love love love! Sorry, I’m a nerd :)), exercises with variations, and finishes with a big draping project. The included DVD offers additional hands-on support for those of us who need a little more guidance beyond pictures.

Man I want that book! I took a course on pattern making and draping in school and unfortunately the only draping we did was of a basic bodice and skirt. The books were totally crazy amount of money and they suck. I haven’t even used the draping book since because unless your in the classroom it’s difficult to understand. But this book looks like the real deal for sure. I already got the professional size 6 dress form and lots of muslin, pattern paper, tag board,etc. I just need a good book.

I would love to create a custom designed LBD that is not too fancy, not too casual and perfectly made just for me. I’ve always compromised and for once, just once, I’d like to have a perfect dress.
I have been having the hardest time with fitting. You know that moment when you try on your muslin, see that it is just somewhat off and think that you can make it fit better? And then you start improving and can’t even get it as good as it was to begin with…. Well, maybe it is just me. I am yet to figure out what alterations I need, but sometimes I think that I may be just better off tryin to drape. What garment? A garment that fits ME! That is what I really want to make!

Holy crap that’s a great give away! What I wouldn’t give for a dress form in my size. No matter, I have plenty of access to dress forms in other sizes. I would drape a denim jacket becuase I can’t seem to find a pattern (pther than the burdastyle petite) that suits my needs. I’m also curious about draping sleeves so that is something I’d be dying to read up on in this book.

I have multiple projects in mind…I love the fashions from the 1920’s-40’s Hollywood Glam period, but also need some well-fitting leather pieces; i.e., halter-style vests, pants, etc. for riding my ‘baaad motor scooter’ but don’t want to ruin expensive leather until I can properly put the pieces together for a finished look that I would feel confident wearing. Also picturing Marilyn’s pink gown from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes for next year’s costume. So many ideas, yet still lacking the skills from this great resource to accomplish them. I want to read that entire book from back to front! As a history goober myself, I’d love to just read it even if I don’t create anything. But, my sister is traveling to Greece for a wedding this summer and has already asked me about making her a dress to wear. Her inspiration dress is from Anthropologie and I just can’t find anything close to it. I think having this book would just help me become a better sewist overall! And the pictures look drool-worthy….

My fit issues tend to center around the upper body, and I have concluded that the only way to conquer this problem is to learn to drape. I have high hopes that this book has those answers!
As for a dream project, well…there are many, of course! For one, I would really like to make a cocktail dress. Every once in awhile I need one, and I’m tired of looking, well, underdressed or ill-fitted on those occasions. Wow…just saw a great dress with a Big Bow draped on one shoulder(She’s Got it Dress) on Linda Evangelista in Bazaar, Oct 2013, not fussy, but dramatic! The draping looked intense (or maybe I am a scaredy cat). After all my tailoring classes, this could be the one to step up my skills! I I am itching for a holiday project!

Oh man. I would love to be able to drape a bias-cut v-neck dress with a gored skirt. I love “It’s a Wonderful Life” and the “bad girl” character wears these amazing dresses. Until I took up sewing a few years ago I didn’t fully appreciate how lovely that type of garment is.
I would love to make a whole outfit (jacket, dress, bag and other accessories) for our celebration-12,5-year together-party 🙂 in September next year. This book looks like it is exactly what I need. I live too far away from any place that offers classes and I always wanted to learn how to drape! I would love to make a version of an Alexander McQueen jacket. Ever since I saw the Savage Beauty exhibit I have been in love with his designs.

I would really love to drape the perfect wrap dress – the one that is the perfect length, skims any, um, flaws, and has just the right amount of cleavage without gappage!
I would start by draping a tunic. It would be awesome to creat a garment made for my measurements specifically rather than trying to adapt a pattern.
I’ve got Halloween on the brain so a Glenda the Good Witch dress strangely sounds like what I’d want to do! Bwahahaha. But for real life draping/sewing I’d love to learn how to make a proper coat!

Really I would like to drape anything – no more patterns to cut, resize, store! Plus I’m a total nerd that would enjoy the challenge. I would love to drape a copy of my grandma’s wedding dress, although I don’t know when I would ever wear it as I’m already married.

Actually, my friend wants me to make one in plum for my bridesmaid dress for her wedding. It has me peeing my pants in intimidation to be honest. WOW! What a resource! This book is amazing, and I don’t think there’s a single thing in there I wouldn’t love to know how to make. I’ll confess though, my imagination seems to believe that my 5’3″ curvy self looks like Rita Hayworth in my head… so just to feed the imagination, I would have to make something to appease my inner peanut gallery.
