Completed: A Slinky Red Butterick 5078

15 Jan

This doesn’t really warrant much of a post – it’s a knit dress, I’ve already made the pattern before, wah wah – but I thought it warranted at least a mention, after I made the changes I was musing over.

Butterick 5078 - slinky red
This is my second version of Butterick 5078 – and way better! So much better!

Butterick 5078 - slinky red
For one, the fabric is better. I wish I could share a little piece with all of you because it is SOOOO SOOOOFFFTT. It’s a rayon knit that I picked up at my local fabric store’s 40% sale (I should go back. Should I go back? ARGH), and it’s even softer than the purple bamboo knit that I used to make that Tiramisu (which, ps, I’m wearing right now. Actually, I wear it like once a week. THIS.DRESS.IS.THE.BOMB.). The color is a rich vibrant red, and it is slinky as all get-out. So, perhaps most people wouldn’t want a slinky red dress. But I like! Slinky and feels like pajamas, yeah!

Butterick 5078 - slinky red
I used the same sizing and everything as before – the 8 – but I did make a few changes:
– Lengthened the bodice to cover all my boobs and not cut across the middle of them. To do this, I put on my first incarnation of the dress and measured how much I needed to add, and then just added it to the bottom of the pattern piece. It was somewhere in the realm of 3″, FYI.
– I removed 3″ of the skirt length from the pattern pieces, so I didn’t waste any of my precious fabric.
– I changed up the construction sequence of the dress, to make it easier and more, uh, knit-friendly. Most everything was constructed flat (the pattern has you do everything in the round, including the sleeves. ewww), and then I zipped up the side seams at the last minute. This was extra convenient, as the super drape powers of this fabric made it a bit big when I first sewed it. It was very easy to take in the side seams!
– The biggest change I made was to eliminate that runched drape deal at the waistline. I considered adding it – even cut out and assembled the pieces – sewed the dress up, thought, “Oh God, I have made a huge mistake”, pulled the runching back on over the dress and realized I would have made a bigger mistake by adding it. I dunno, that runching just looks weird on me. Sorry.

Butterick 5078 - slinky red
I am fully aware you can see, like, everything through this dress. NO CARE – it’s like a slinky, sexy pajama. Ooh ooh!

Butterick 5078 - slinky red
I also think it’s interesting to note how different the neckline looks with a drapier fabric. Unfortunately, this one isn’t so gape-friendly. I do have to be careful when I bend over (and wearing a tank underneath to counteract isn’t an option: see above re SLINKY).

I guess there’s not much else to say about this dress. I do think knit dresses are my new go-to for cold weather, though. I can cozy them up with tights and boots and a handmade sweater, and I feel polished while still being totally appropriate to roll up on the couch. I need to dig into the rest of my knit stack from Textile; I’ve got a few stripey pieces that I’m dying to play with!

Kitty approved? Sort of.

Damn you girl, you keep putting patterns on my must-have-right-now list! 😉 Looks fantastic, and that color looks great on you!

LOVE IT! Seriously – red is marvelous on you, and you look comfy and stylish – well done!

The red is such an awesome color, and the skirt drapes perfectly. It also looks super cozy, who cares if it’s slinky 🙂 LOVE it!!

Gorgeous! I love this on you!

I’ve kind of been anti-serger for a long time, but your knit dresses are making me reconsider.

I love that color and that cut on you.

You are the most prolific sewist I know…really! I can’t believe how you churn out cute item after cute item…while I’m still struggling with one simple dress! (Sewing envy here)

LOVE this latest version – and smart to have added the extra inches! It fits you perfectly! Love the color, the way it drapes – really nice look for you! I’ll have to look into that pattern for my daughter – it’s really super cute! On that note…I noticed you said you cut the size 8…what size in RTW do you wear, if you don’t mind sharing? Getting pattern sizing correct has been one of the most frustrating things for me in getting back to sewing clothing (as opposed to window treatments!). Even when I think I’ve got the right size, it’s always something…!

Thanks for another inspiration. Enjoy your beautiful new dress 🙂

To be fair, knits are a super super quick sew. Think like 1-2 hours (as opposed to 4-6+ for a woven). There is very little fitting involved, and you can even leave it unhemmed if you really want to be lazy. Knits are awesomeeee!

I’m not sure what RTW size I wear, since I don’t buy modern RTW these days. I think most of what I have is a size 2, but I also have some 4. I base all my pattern sizing off the finished measurements, as I like things to fit very close. I’m currently at 35-26.5-36 (I’ve lost weight recently, ughf), if that helps!

Oh, this is great, especially with the changes you made. I like this much better than the original version. Do you do anything but sew? You are very prolific!

    • LLADYBIRD January 15, 2013 at 12:44 pm #

I sew pretty much every day! haha!

What a fantastic shade of red it’s like cherry red, and you can tell the fabric has got gorgeous drape..looks mega, so suits you. I wear my knit dresses weekly too, I think I’m averse to ironing and knit dresses are instant wash n wear….call me lazy!

  9. tempestdevyne January 15, 2013 at 12:17 pm #

Love seeing this dress, I’ve used a few patterns with ruched midriffs (though not a knit yet) and as I have a buddha belly they’ve made me even bulkier…..I never even thought of changing the construction – Thank you! I’m soooo in need of some knit dresses though with the current cold snap, I’ve got a lovely full summer wardrobe but need to work on some warm pretty stuff. You’re an inspiration!

  10. Carolyn January 15, 2013 at 12:28 pm #

That shade of red is perfect on you! Love this dress on you!

  11. Aline January 15, 2013 at 12:57 pm #

Color, pattern-without-the-ruching, it works great for you, you look fabulous!

  12. lakaribane January 15, 2013 at 1:32 pm #

What Carolyn said! Re:gapage, I made S2580 (I think) over the summer and the Front Bodice is self-line and gapes like crazy. I am considering this trick of Mélissa @ Fehrtrade.com which consists in sewing a little fabric tail to the cowl facing. Then you slip the tail under the bridge of your bra (the middle part, btw the cups). It is supposed to prevent the peekaboo effect inherent to cowl necklines.

    • LLADYBIRD January 15, 2013 at 1:34 pm #

Holy shit, that is a BRILLIANT idea! Thank you thank you!

      • Leann January 15, 2013 at 3:34 pm #

I have a RTW dress that has a tail as described above but it has a little lead weight inside it.

  13. grenouille78 January 15, 2013 at 2:33 pm #

Gosh, I need to get over my fear of knits. You make them look so good!

  14. Lisa January 15, 2013 at 2:43 pm #

“I should go back. Should I go back? ARGH” —> the discount day/half off sale story of my LIFE. I always end up going back, for better or for worse! God help me. Also, this dress is amazing…really like the drape of the neck and skirt, and the color. Success!

  15. Amanda January 15, 2013 at 2:46 pm #

This looks comfy-tastic! Loving the colour and drape. Looks like a perfect piece to transition from work to couch and tv! 😉

  16. Jane January 15, 2013 at 2:56 pm #

Gorgeous, Lauren! I agree whole-heartedly, it’s way better than version 1. Not to say version 1 wasn’t stunning but this red slinky number looks great on you!!!

  17. missjoiedevivre January 15, 2013 at 3:06 pm #

Slinky, sexy, feels like pyjamas, looks like Hollywood? Win.

  18. Lucinda January 15, 2013 at 3:25 pm #

I love the recent inclusion of your kitty in your final garment shots…a reoccurring theme?

    • LLADYBIRD January 15, 2013 at 4:13 pm #

Haha, from time to time anyway! As much as I love the little fuckface, I don’t think everyone wants this to turn into a cat blog 😉

  19. hannybobbins January 15, 2013 at 3:47 pm #

Love the dress and also love that the cat looks so unimpressed with all your beautiful creations! Cats just ooze character, love em’

  20. kimmie January 15, 2013 at 4:07 pm #

This dress is adorable. I think slowly…you are wearing on me and making me want to learn to sew. [beyond at least what I learned in 4-h. My skill set is lacking.] BTW- I live in knit dresses in the winter. They are perfect if you wanna totally Mary Kate Olson it and pile on the layers.

    • LLADYBIRD January 15, 2013 at 4:13 pm #

MWAHWHWA!! I HAVE CONVERTED ANOTHER ONE! >:)

  21. Donna January 15, 2013 at 4:14 pm #

Wow, that’s an awesome date dress! Or whatever, every day feelling-sexy dress. 😉

  22. Kat January 15, 2013 at 6:26 pm #

OMG! That dress looks so perfect on you…like it was made for you or something??!! 😛 Must get that pattern, thanks for sharing.

  23. Lori January 15, 2013 at 7:48 pm #

    Amazing dress, you look fantastic.

  24. Emma Simuns January 15, 2013 at 8:14 pm #

I love looking at your blog! My boyfriend and I cracked up when we saw your cat! It looks like it could be our cats doppleganger (or vice versa)! These are the only pictures I have of Summer (FatBear) up on my blog…http://ourquarterlifecrises.wordpress.com/2012/06/22/emma-challenge-13-part-3/

Oooh, I love your fluffy tortie! Wish Amelia was that fluffy; I’d bury my face in her stomach all day 🙂

  25. Pamela Lovell January 15, 2013 at 8:56 pm #

Okay, I’m an old woman, but I have to say that you look absolutely adorable in this dress. Colour, fit everything. Thanks for sharing.

  26. Beth January 15, 2013 at 11:35 pm #

The dress looks fabulous! I too like a knit dress for winter with leggings, boots and a sweater. It’s so cozy!

  27. vivjm January 16, 2013 at 3:26 am #

Wow! Gorgeous dress. Can’t be a better combination than sexy AND feels like pjs 🙂

  28. The Amazing Taracat January 16, 2013 at 5:54 am #

Love it! And totally agree with you on the knit dress thing, perfect for winter layering.

  29. sallie January 17, 2013 at 9:05 am #

Slinky red knit dresses are seriously the best. BEST, I tell you! Nothing like looking all sexy while wearing something that feels like pj’s! And I’m with you on their winter appropriateness.

Pleaseeee let me know what those wooden things that hold your threads are on the wall, Im in Australia and I cannot find them anywhere!

    • LLADYBIRD January 17, 2013 at 12:43 pm #

Those are thread spool holders – mine are from Joann’s (there are two different holders; one has longer posts to holder serger thread cones 😉 ), but you can get them on Amazon too!

  31. velosewer January 19, 2013 at 3:54 am #

Your version is spot on fit-wise and the colour and gorgeous.
