Swiss dot or dotted swiss? I’ve heard it both ways. Which one do YOU use?
I’m going to apologize in advance for 2 things – 1. These pictures are terrible (when am I going to figure out that white photographs like doo-doo?) and, 2. This isn’t even how the shirt looks now, and no I won’t be taking more pictures (see fig. 1).
Ok, now that that’s off my chest…
Here be the Colette Violet blouse in pretty dotted swiss! Let’s talk about the good stuff first.
I barely – barely squeezed this out of 7/8 yard. The under collar is actually cut on the bias and pieced in the middle. The bias part actually makes it roll quite nicely at the seam, so bonus mistake turned into a ~design element, yeah? My dotted swiss was extremely sheer, so I hand-underlined the whole thing with equally sheer cotton batiste – you can still kind of see the seams through the fabric, no biggie. I was originally going to leave the sleeves underlined, by a practically unanimous vote, but when it came down to it… leaving the sleeves sheer just looked like I had run out of underlining fabric. They didn’t go with the rest of the blouse at all, sadly. Instead of interfacing, I used a slightly heavier bleached muslin to stabilize the collar & facings. I wanted the entire shirt to be cotton/white/breezy – perfect for a summer bike ride 🙂
The fit was… interesting. I wanted this version to be more fitted, like Joanne’s fitted Violets, so I put some giant (like 1″) vertical darts down the front. If you’re curious how I did it – ehh, I sewed the entire shirt up, minus the hem, put it on inside-out and properly buttoned, and then just pinched away until it fit the way I like. Then I basted my darts, checked the fit right-side out, and sewed them down forreal. Easy! I think fitted looks much better on me and now I don’t have to tuck it in if I don’t feel like it 🙂
I sewed this up in a size 4, but cut the back down to a 0 at the side seams to make it a little less blousey. In the future, I will probably cut this to a 2 and add a FBA because my darts were all kinds of in the wrong place! You can’t really tell in the pictures – partially because I’m standing still so it stays in place, and partially because the pictures are total shit, but trust me. I wore this thing all day yesterday and every now and then I’d look down and notice the side darts were hanging out on the tops of my lady lumps. It would appear the shoulders were too big, which would cause the shirt to ride up every time I moved. I had originally moved the darts up when making my first Violet blouse, and they look fine where they are, so I’m not sure why these were such a pain. Maybe because this version is more fitted? Ehh.
Of course, the entire shirt is serged within an inch of it’s life, so any normal person would probably either deal or wad, but I REALLY NEED A DOTTED SWISS PETER PAN COLLAR BLOUSE TO WEAR WHILE RIDING MY BICYCLE THIS SUMMER. So I ripped up all the seams last night & spent an hour pinning, fiddling, basting, tucking, and pressing until I moved the darts into a more respectable position and shortened as much of the shoulder seams as I dared.
Flat – the buttons are from the flea market! Love it when stuff like that just appears for me 😀
Inside – underlining, serged seams, oh and yes, my tag 🙂
Nevermind the dart creeping upward, here is a vertical dart for waist fitting.
Anyway, I am quite happy with my shirt now 🙂 It fits nicely & the darts are in the correct places. And isn’t it perfect for a summer bike ride? Hm I need to sew me up some plaid shorts asap 🙂
Ohh I love it!! I’ve been looking for some swiss dot (yup, I reverse it) to make the same blouse, but I never thought about making it more fitted. I think I’m going to have to give it a go. My first one was definitely more blousy. Love yours! Great job – those bike rides will be very fashionable. 🙂
I love the violet in a swiss dot. I wish I underlined mine as well since I have to wear a cami underneath mine since it’s so sheer. But it will be great for summmertime I guess.
Sorry you had so many issues with yours. It looks pretty cute.
Did you have any issues with the length of the armscye? Mine were too long…
Yes! The armscye is too low for my short lil’ body 😦 Next time ’round I will have to raise it an inch or so.
I love it! I’m totally inspired to re-examine this particular pattern. I was a tester for it and have to admit that minus the darts in the front, it just looked kind of like a sack on me and now I know why! Yours looks darling and I even have some swiss dot fabric! Gah! You are such a clever little minx! We are all anxiously awaiting a re-post photo with you on your bike and in this top. Yay!
xoxo, Sunni
I call it dotted swiss — and it is my absolute favorite fabric. Especially in crisp white – lovely!`
Cute! Dotted Swiss for me, and I love it, too! It’s cute without being over the top and fun to mix with stripes and solids.
It turned out really cute with your adjustments. If I remember correctly I think we are fairly similar in size, so it’s like I get to use you as a fit model for patterns I may want to try 🙂 yay!
Ooh lovely. After seeing Joanne’s fitted versions, I debated whether to make my Violet more fitted. Mine’s fine but I can only wear it tucked into something. And now, seeing this gorgeous, fresh, crisp Violet, with lovely giant vertical darts, my mind is made up! You look gorgeous in it Lauren. x
a) I say swiss dot.
b) You finish things so fast!
c) I was not at all tempted to make Violet before, but I love your non-boxy version.
This turned out really nice! I’ve been wanting a dotted swiss blouse (it’s been in and out of my cart at Fabric.com for a couple of months), but was thinking of using the Burda JJ. Can’t wait to see it with the plaid shorts. 🙂
Really cute, and I like how you fitted the front – I might try this out.
How do you sew things so quickly?!?!!??! Now I want to get that pattern!!! It looks so cute!
Haha weeeell I cut it out on Friday (I think) and sewed it up over the weekend if that makes you feel any better! 🙂
I vote for dotted swiss and I most definitely vote for this blouse- too cute!
I like Dotted Swiss, and I think your blouse is just adorable – perfect for a bike ride! 🙂
Oh so cute! I think your fitting looks very flattering, and I have to say, I was anti-underlining the sleeves but seeing your version I’m now a convert.
I love it! I have some super-sheer swiss dot also that I need to underline with cotton batiste, but am using a different pattern for it.
It’s gorgeous! I’ve seen fitted versions pop up but I have to admit that your vertical darts are the prettiest method to my mind. I’ve had the pattern in the heap since it came out, but have always held back on it as it did look a little boxy, this seems to be a beautiful solution.
Your version turned out great. I think the pattern would have benefited from incorporating darts like this.
Love this and love your whole attitude to making stuff Lauren! If something’s not right you just rip and fiddle until you perfect it…and it’s all worth it. This blouse is so cute and fits you like a glove!
I love how it turned out. I just finished a violet yesterday – I’d been umming and ahhing about adding darts, and opted to go without. I was pretty happy with mine until I saw this. That’s it… from now on I’m not attempting any new patterns without having seen a perfected version from you first!!
It does look great and so when are you going bicycle riding? Oh yes, the plaid shorts :o) and summer. Right.
Wow, your blouse really looks great! It makes me long for the warm months. Your blouse will be perfect for a bike ride.
At first glance, I thought the darts made it work fine. But if I go back over it, I think you need to make sure the shoulder isn’t too wide for you, since that would make it sit too loosely on the upper chest and make it rise up – hence the darts that ride up. This would be especially so when altering the fit, since the shoulders are designed for the looser fit. The final photos look better vertical dart-wise, so I think your heroic efforts (I hate tearing out things that are already serged, too!) made a definite difference to the fit. But the horizontal darts seem too high. I think I’ve said it before, but I’m voting for the FBA for you, and that combined with the smaller shoulder should probably make it just about as perfect as it can get. Now I wish I thought this pattern would be flattering for me!
Oh yes, the shoulders were definitely too wide, which was causing the entire thing to ride up & push the horizontal darts into the wrong place. I fixed it as best I could – the shoulders are still a little wide, but the darts are in the right place. Those pictures are all pre-adjustment 🙂 I think from here on out I’m just going to suck it up and do a FBA – I do it for every other pattern, not sure why I’ve been kicking & screaming when it comes to Colette 🙂 Ha!
Oh i Love it! So much fun 🙂 Isn’t white annoyingly hard to photograph. I think you did well though. You are right, a nice summer bike ride sounds perfect 🙂
So cute! I really love the addition of the darts to make it more fitted–it gives the blouse a bit more of a refined look. 🙂
Cute! Cute! Cute! Isn’t the violet adorable and this version is super sweet. I’m glad you squeezed it out of such a small yardage. I’d thought I’d only used a metre ( but then doubted myself, even still it might be 1.5m). Sorry, digression!! Swiss dotted Swiss is lovely and that underlining must have taken its time. I was thinking of going for a Swiss sort Swiss (!) violet non underlined a la Edwardian style with o so pretty camisole ( also needs making) underneath. I do love yours tho. It’s perfect for bike rides – seeing you in my mind with circle skirt billowing out!!
Love, love, love!
Really like the fabric you chose for this, really sweet and understated.
Love your blouse! I’m just making my 3rd Violet – the first 2 didn’t work out for different reasons. I made it way too short in my first one (pink light weight denim which was actually really nice otherwise!) – the next in purple silk that ripped when I had to pick out a tuck in the neck while sewing on the collar (grrr) and now my third in brown silk taffeta. Now this one BETTER turn out or I’m going to be running around like a savage 🙂 I really loved your idea of tucks down the front. I might just do that too if this one makes it that far 🙂
