Completed: The Ensis Tee

13 Feb

I feel like such a bad friend, but I’ve hardly managed to make a ding in my stack of Constellation patterns from Papercut Patterns. Not for lack of inspiration – I have plans for almost every pattern in that horde – but a lack of time. Well, I guess time isn’t such a bad issue now, huh? ๐Ÿ™‚ YAY TIME TO GET SEWING.

Ensis Tee - stripes

So here’s the first of the series – the Ensis Tee! Actually, hush hush, but this is the second Ensis Tee I’ve sewn – the first one, I tried to use pieced fabric scraps to make the yoke up and it just ended up a mess of mismatched seams. It’s super comfy, though, so I wear it as loungewear ๐Ÿ™‚

I really love the colorblocking effects with this pattern – I have so many ideas that I want to put into action! Like making it into a colorblocked turtleneck or cutting the yoke out of lace. Such a great little basic pattern!

Ensis Tee - stripes

For this particular Ensis, I used more my stripey ponte from the making of my Stripy Lady Skater, and the matching ivory ponte for the colorblock at the top. I also managed to cut out a Renfrew with the tiny bit of remaining yardage left, so expect one more garment out of this amazing fabric. What? Don’t look at me like that.

Ensis Tee - stripes

I cut the size XXS and the only alteration I made was a nip the waist in just a tiny bit for some added shape. My original Ensis was made using a very drapey Merino wool and the unaltered size is perfect, but when the fabric has a bit more body, you may need to add a little bit more shaping or else run the risk of looking boxy.

I also shortened the sleeves a little, as the originals were too long with the addition of the cuffs. You can’t see too well in these pictures, but the hem is slightly curved. I finished that with a simple twin-needle stitch – the rest of the shirt is sewn entirely on the serger. Yess!

Ensis Tee - stripes

I mostly like this top because I think it makes my boobs look big. There, I said it.

Ok, FINE, I reckon we can now address the elephant in the room – my hair! What is UP with my hair?!

Ensis Tee - stripes

I told y’all it was bright orange!

Ensis Tee - stripes

So, this is phase 1 of a two-part hair makeover. I had it bleached out last week at the salon (my salon does a training program that needed a bleach model, which means I got this done for a STEAL. srsly, srsly cheap), but I haven’t had a chance to deposit my color on it yet – hopefully this weekend. YES, it’s very orange – I had old box color already on my hair, which makes for unpredictable bleaching results. This was as light as we could go without really damaging my hair, and it’s fine for what I have planned. YES, I am aware that orange is not the most flattering color for my complexion, and I don’t intend to leave it like this for forever (although it’s kind of fun right now, not gonna lie!). I’m now working a job that doesn’t require a natural hair color as part of the dress code, so I jumped at the opportunity to do something weird with my hair. It’s just hair, it’ll grow back!

Ensis Tee - stripes

Also, say hello to my sewing room! The winter has been wretched cold, but with enough random warm days scattered throughout so I was able to squeeze in some outside photos from time to time. We’re right in the midst of another below-freezing week, so I’m back to shooting in my sewing room ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you know what: the first thing I thought when I saw your pictures was “Goodness, that top makes her boobs look big” ๐Ÿ™‚ I should definitely try it as well. And I quite like the orange hair – go orange!

    • LLADYBIRD February 13, 2014 at 4:57 pm #

      Haha YAY it worked! ๐Ÿ™‚

The orange makes you look very “Dark Side of Nashvegas.”

    • LLADYBIRD February 13, 2014 at 4:58 pm #

I AM the Dark Side of Nashvegas, didn’t you know? ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. bmary February 13, 2014 at 8:35 am #

I have totally been there with the orange hair. Oh man, that wasn’t my favorite thing ever either.

The shirt is awesome! Seriously, good work. And I like your sewing room! Very pretty.

  4. Jenny February 13, 2014 at 8:56 am #

That shirt looks great on you! I however am on a life-long mission to my the old boobs look *smaller*, so I hesitate… ๐Ÿ™‚

    • kristiellkay February 13, 2014 at 12:20 pm #

I was going to ask you, Lauren, what if the top/yoke part was in a darker solid? Do you think that would be more…slimming? Cause I’m more for that sorta thing with my t-shirts. =D

      • LLADYBIRD February 13, 2014 at 4:58 pm #

I imagine it would. Check out the model on the pattern envelope – she has on a darker top/light bottom Ensis ๐Ÿ™‚

Great job on the Enis. I’d want to make this with navy and cream stripes. I hope your next hair colour is worth the orange hair interlude. You must be going lighter?

    • LLADYBIRD February 13, 2014 at 4:59 pm #

A bit lighter, but mostly brighter ๐Ÿ™‚

i love this top! you’re rightโ€” it’s the perfect basic! it’s the style top i am drawn to A LOT when window browsing so i might have to treat myself to this little pattern so i can learn to make it in any colorway/pattern i want! does it *have* to be sewn on a serger or could i use my machine? you know i’m still a newb at this but later this month i have some time set aside for sewing and i’m looking to get more basic skills under my belt โ€” so yes, feel free to let me know if this isn’t beginner material ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • jenna (@KittyCatStevens) February 13, 2014 at 9:04 am #

ooh, and i just clicked over and the pattern says “rookie”. . . this is a good sign for me!

    • LLADYBIRD February 13, 2014 at 5:00 pm #

Nope! You can totally sew this on a machine… I just like to use my serger because it’s easier, faster, and… well… I happen to have one ๐Ÿ™‚ But it’s not necessary to make a good tshirt. You can also TOTALLY tackle this! Matching the seams at the yokes/underarms might be a little tricky, but it’s doable.

    It’s extremely cute.

  8. sallie February 13, 2014 at 9:10 am #

Love the Ensis!! Great fabric pairing! And you know… I kinda dig the orange hair! You remind me of that super cool girl in high school that didn’t give a fuck and was always manic-panic-ing her hair! Can’t wait to see what it will morph into though – hair makeovers are always so much fun!! Also, if my sewing room looked like yours (instead of The Mouth of Hell) I would never leave it.

    • LLADYBIRD February 13, 2014 at 5:01 pm #

Haha! That was me in high school! Ohh… some of those hair colors. Man, I’m glad digital cameras weren’t the norm back then ๐Ÿ˜›

  9. Kate February 13, 2014 at 9:36 am #

How very punk rock of you. It looks pink on my screen. Awesome.

    • LLADYBIRD February 13, 2014 at 5:01 pm #

It does have a bit of a pink sheen to it! When we were rinsing out the bleach, the stylist was like, “oh… it’s pink…” and I was all ‘OH YEAAAH!’ haha

  10. weefrills February 13, 2014 at 10:28 am #

Love the color block. I agree with the previous poster–your hair looks pink, which reminds me of grungy cool hair. Curious to see the final do!

  11. MelissaPurls February 13, 2014 at 10:34 am #

The shirt looks great and I actually love your hair that color! It’s super fun, and like other people have said, it’s got a bit of a pink look to it on my screen.

  12. Kelly February 13, 2014 at 10:41 am #

Beautiful shirt! it’s so basic, but it has that super well-made look to it that is so hard to come by in RTW. I’m looking forward to seeing what the next step for your hair will be!

  13. Lori February 13, 2014 at 10:45 am #

Great looking shirt, perfect fabric! I think the hair is cute but you look cute in anything and everything.

  14. Maddie February 13, 2014 at 11:58 am #

Ah! So we finally find out about the orange hair! Red, purple, pink or blue, you’ll always look great!

  15. cathy February 13, 2014 at 12:39 pm #

  16. SeeKatSew February 13, 2014 at 1:04 pm #

You had me at boobs looking bigger – must make ensis tee!! My hair is naturally orange (red but come on it’s orange!) so enjoy the orange phase!!

  17. megthegrand February 13, 2014 at 3:08 pm #

LOVE the tee, and adore your hair!

    • LLADYBIRD February 13, 2014 at 5:02 pm #

I love this colour combo! And I think the orange hair is awesome.

  20. Kat H February 14, 2014 at 2:26 am #

Ensis tees make me happy. Made three so far, plans for many more yet to come…. ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Alida Makes February 14, 2014 at 10:31 am #

That’s it! I need that pattern STAT. Also, your hair is amazing. Seriously.

  22. MaZeLiving February 14, 2014 at 12:03 pm #

Love the simplicity and versatility of this one! Mmmm, lace! I have been looking for a good pattern to make a simple knit top with lace yoke.
I can’t wait to see what your hair will look like when you are done with it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Orange is not my top choice, but you might be just pulling it off!

  23. Kim February 15, 2014 at 4:38 am #

Loving your tee! It looks super comfy and yet really stylish at the same time ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve been wanting to do some colourblocking/using 2 fabrics for a while now, but can’t really find the right colours to pair with my silks that I want to use.. Can’t wait to see what colour your hair will become! Ever since cutting of my dreads I’ve felt a bit boring, but I’m not brave enough for colouring, just highlights for me..

  24. clareyszabo February 16, 2014 at 10:36 am #

So as I was reading this, Sweet Child O’ Mine came on the radio! (You know I totally smiled at your pictures in a really creepy way) … Anyway it made me smile and get even more excited for NY. I love this tee… I have been looking for something like this to make up some basic tops so I’m heading to Papercut right now. SOLD!

    • LLADYBIRD February 18, 2014 at 9:21 am #

I’m so excited too! We’ve officially reached the part where I am making clothes specifically to wear while I’m there, ha!

  25. Miranda Vorres February 17, 2014 at 3:23 pm #

You are a very pretty lady, so you can pull off all kinds of colors that don’t “go with your complexion”. Thank you for all the time you’ve put into your blog; I always learn something new from you.

    • LLADYBIRD February 18, 2014 at 9:20 am #

aw, that’s such a nice thing to say! Thank you! ๐Ÿ™‚
