A few months ago, I was contacted by Spiegel (yes, the catalog company!) about trying out a new machine that they were in the process of manufacturing. “Free sewing machine” is one of the quickest ways to grab my attention (don’t even lie, you’d do the exact same thing), and I was especially intrigued when they told me the price point was under $300. Y’all know I’m a diehard for my Bernina & Pfaff machines, but we all know that a budget is a very real and personal thing, and not everyone can afford to spend $2k+ on a piece of machinery – no matter how much you just looove sewing. I get that – I was in the same position myself for a very long time. That being said, it’s hard to recommend something at a lower price point when most stuff in that category is just pure awful. Even $500 is a lot of money for a lot of people, and that’s about the bare minimum that I could comfortably recommend for a new/non-vintage machine. Super bummer. Sewing should be for everyone, not just the people with bulging bank accounts.
All that being said, I am pretty excited about this Spiegel 60609 machine! I will admit that I was pretty apprehensive about it’s potential shortcomings before I had a chance to try it out for myself – yes, it is a beautiful machine, but it is a polished turd? I was lucky enough to see the machine before it hit the stores way back in November – I stopped by the Spiegel headquarters while I was in NYC and spent a couple of hours being wooed with sewing machines and chai lattes, yay – and I’ve had this particular machine taking up residence in my sewing room since December. We’ve had some time to really get to know each other, and things have been pretty awesome. Spiegel 60609 is good stuff, y’all.
A quick overview of the machine – Spiegel 60609 is a computerized machine with over 350 built-in stitches, plus the option to download more stitches via iTunes and Google Play. It has plenty of standard and not-so-standard features – automatic start/stop technology (as in, you can sew with the press of a button instead of using the foot pedal), one-step button hole, speed control, twin needle capability, automatic needle threader, presser foot pressure dial, to name a few. It also has some very unusual, very cool features – it has a built-in Wifi station, which connects to the StitchCam located over the needle (!!!). The little gold shelf you see is designed to hold your cell phone or tablet, and there’s a Handy Hook that pops up to really secure things in place so they don’t bounce around while you’re sewing. Ideally, you’d have your phone up there to access tutorials on the Spiegel sewing app – but personally, I use it to watch Netflix while I’m sewing 😛 BECAUSE I CAN. Oh, yeah, and there’s a USB port in the side of the machine, which is super handy for recharging your phone after you’ve used up the battery on a bunch of X-Files episodes. Ahem. And the most important part – the stitch quality! It’s surprisingly good. Like, really really good. My only complaint is that the throat plate doesn’t have a lot of markings for seam allowances, but that can easily be rectified with strips of tape (or, in my case, Post-It notes).
Unlike most budget-friendly machines, the Spiegel 60609 actually has a heavy-duty metal frame (no plastic! Rejoice!) to keep it from bouncing around all over your table when you’ve pushed things to their highest speed. This metal frame extends all the way into the handle – so you can actually use it to carry the machine, instead of holding the whole thing like a baby (go ahead and laugh, but about a year ago, the plastic handle on my Bernina snapped in half and I dropped it on the ground. It’s fine now – it was fixed under warranty and the machine was not harmed, but MAN ALIVE that was a horrifying moment). It comes with an impressive array of included accessories – several feet (including a zipper foot, overcasting foot, blind hem foot, button hole foot, and non-stitch foot), extra needles and bobbins, screwdrivers, and quilting guides. It is my understanding that the machine was designed to be compatible with most standard low-shank feet (of course, neither of my machines have those kinds of feet – the Bernina is high-shank, and the Pfaff is one of the old German ones that *only* uses special Pfaff feet). I believe Spiegel is in the process of getting together a box o’feet that you can buy to use with the machine, though, if you’re in the same boat I am. I totally have a foot fetish when it comes to sewing machines, so I am pretty pumped about that!
The Spiegel 60609 retails for a hair under $300, and is available at Walmart (either in-house at your local store, or you can order online and ship free to your store) and also through Spiegel. While I do advocate supporting your local sewing machine store by purchasing through them, I understand that not everyone *has* a local sewing machine store, or can afford a $500 base model. Let’s be perfectly clear here – this is not a substitute for that high-end, several thousand dollar specialty machine. However, it is a great not-quite-so-basic machine that is perfect for a beginner, in a price range that works with a lot more budgets. Plus, it’s super pretty. Look at that fancy gold and white and tell me that’s not a beautiful machine. I dare you.
This post would be pretty useless without some proof of stitch quality, right? Here are some quick tests I did. I realize now that I should have included some comparisons of Bernina vs Spiegel – I will next time!
For this one, I lengthened the stitches by a couple mm and used a different color thread for the bobbin. The fabric is an old sheet, so it’s pretty sturdy.
Here are the stitches on a much more delicate fabric – some *very* lightweight Liberty of London cotton/silk voile. Still no skipped stitches and no puckers.
Finally, a sampling of some of the embroidery stitches and another shot of the straight stitch. Not too shabby!
With all that being said – I’ve decided to partner with Spiegel, so expect more 60609 love throughout the year! I will be sharing monthly projects and tutorials, all of which are sewn on the Spiegel 60609, to show how versatile the machine is. That is, if I haven’t convinced you already 🙂 I will still be using my other machines as well for other projects (let’s be real, those are my babies and I ain’t planning on dumping them off!), so don’t expect this blog to turn into a giant sales pitch. But if you want to see more of what the machine is capable of doing – well, I have some plans in the works! 🙂

This is great! The machine really is beautiful- and I appreciate all of the innovations. The cell phone holder and USB port are smart ideas. Now that we’re approaching the end of winter I’m realizing how much I really need a good winter coat. I’ve been looking into fabric and patterns already, so a coat would definitely be my first project. A brand new machine would be really fun to work with!

This isn’t a brand I am familiar with as a beginner in the UK so that was really interesting to find out what else is out there other than the usual Singer, Bernina, Janome etc. If I won I would definitely make something like a Shirt Dress. The machine I have at the moment which is my beginner machine, has a 4 step buttonhole and it really puts me off making anything with buttons 🙂 I have been researching where to go with a computerised machine so something like this could be the way forward!
That is actually really stylish, maybe I would not feel so guilty about leaving it on the dining room table if I had that machine. I would probably attempt a denim type shirt dress, not sure I fancy doing all those button holes on my very basic Singer.

Love the design and the fact that I could watch tutorials while I sew! My first project would be a knit laundry day tee. I love my Bernina but I am friggin’ OVER skipped stitches when sewing knits. I love knit garments but the frustration when sewing hacks me off to no end and sewing becomes a chore instead of fun. I NEED A NEW MACHINE (yes, Bernie is old and not top of the line). I’m machine less and have been trying to sew by hand and goodness it is not working so well. So my first project would probably be to resew this skirt I sewed. I thought it was all good but then I stood up at a meeting at work and let loose a good 1/4 of the skirt’s gathering. My boss is still laughing.
My sewing machine isn’t a fan of stretchy fabric, so the first thing I would sew would probably be a tank top or tshirt dress.

My first project on that classy white-and-gold lady would be something that takes advantage of the adjustable presser foot pressure–jeans, perhaps? I know it seems strange that I’d forego a fancy embroidered something in favor of such a workaday feature, but my own beloved machine doesn’t have it, and I can definitely tell when it struggles with very thick and very thin fabrics. I’d love to know what it’s like to glide through a heavy seam instead of laboriously cranking through it!

Wow! This is such an exciting giveaway! I think the first thing I would make would have to be an Archer. It’s such a joy to sew if the fabric presses well, and I would have fun with the embroidery stitches on the pockets and/or the collar. Also, I think a woven fabric would be a good place to start when using a new machine for the first time. And I’ve got the perfect fabric in my stash 🙂

This looks like a very nice machine for sure. I adore your blog and have been following it for quite a long time. I really like the socks that your knit, although I would never be able to do those myself. My mother was a great seamstress and quilter in her time, and she passed away late last year. We were cleaning out her sewing room, and most of it has ended up in my hands. My first project is to do a memory quilt top from her favorite fabrics she had saved, and some of her clothes that she had left us. I am currently working on a quilt that she didn’t have time to finish, and is still up on the boards in my old bedroom she converted to a quilting room. This looks very interesting. I have been looking for a “newer” machine which has a needle threader and a thread cutter. (I did’t see any info on the cutter.) This looks like a fabulous chance to try something more in my price range, which is under $800.
I sew on all vintage machines and most of them are straight stitch. I want to sew more knits, especially casual cotton knit floral dresses to wear in my flower booth at the Farmer’s Market. I have been wary of the computerized machines even though I love my apple products!
I was not even aware that Spiegel still existed! Back in the day, when I was a young professional, I bought all my clothes through the Spiegel catalog! Loved that catalog!

Hello! The machine looks amazing. I’ve been struggling with old basic sewing machine for years and finally decided to get something more versatile to improve my projects. But unfortunately, I was on a budged so still bought quite basic one. However, the baby is being used almost every day for tiny fixes or bigger projects.
If I won this machine, I would finally make a long summer dress from my lovely lightweight cream polka dot fabric that I had for three years and always was too afraid to ruin with my not so delicate machines. This Spiegel product would give me extra courage to make my dream dress. Summer is coming after all!
OMG!! I”ve been searching for machines for my two daughters, both of whom have recently expressed an interest in sewing. This looks like it would be the perfect machine for them. Both live away from home. My oldest daughter works near my office, and we sometimes go to my house at lunchtimes to sew. It would be awesome if I win this so I can give it to her!

To be honest, if I won the machine I would spend at least a week just playing with all those stitches! Maybe make a crazy quilt to show them off.
The first thing I’d sew with this beauty would be some wild pyjama pants for my grand baby.
I want to teach my husband how to sew. He would LOVE this machine because it is so cool and because he could tune into those X-files episodes and listen to lectures and watch movies while “working” on his projects. It’s the only way I could get him to even approach a sewing machine. He would really go nuts for the alphabet ’cause he is just so into words! He says he would make tote bags as his first project. Somehow I think a superhero cape would be in there somewhere, too. If he didn’t like sewing (impossible to imagine but, nevertheless, some folks are built that way), I would donate it to the local domestic violence shelter so women and their kids could use it to repair their hearts as well as their clothes.
Great read and I was amazed to see so many stitches on the machine. So, getting ready for spring I would make myself and my girls a modified Greenstyle Bella Bubble dresses.

I had a similar machine when my kids were growing up. I cried when it finally died, it was so sturdy. I would dearly love another one that didn’t tax my aging brain to use. Bells and whistles are just noise (er, music?), but quiet reliability would win my heart.

I think the first thing I’d sew is maternity activewear!!! I am not pregnant now, but hope to be. During my first pregnancy my current machine struggled with skipped stitches on wicking fabric… And I had to throw in the towel on maternity yoga tops!! Ugh! Hoping this machine would allow me to make fun maternity wear since I practice yoga 3-4 times per week….(i actually practiced yoga AFTER my water broke the day I delivered my son’s.. Because I’m crazy and denial is a powerful thing!!!) That machine looks impressive for $300!!!!

This machine looks so good – I’m currently on the market for a computerized sewing machine (sooooooo many pretty stitches!) and its art deco golden lines would look so perfect in my bedroom – and the support for an tablet is sheer genius. I even looked it up on Spiegel, but the shipping & handling would be a wooping $185 to France…

The first thing I’d sew would probably be a reversible By Hand London Anna dress. Apparently all of my family members decided to get married this year, so I’m thinking the only way to go is a maxi-length Anna and I have some magenta and black double gauze that would be perfect. Plus, if it’s reversible then I can wear it multiple times and no one will know.
I’ve always considered my love of sewing to be a beautiful gift. I want to pass that love along to my granddaughter and teach her to sew on this wonderful machine. Then hopefully, when she swoons over all its possibilities, pass it along to her, to use and cherish as her “first” machine. And….I will let her choose the first project she’d like to sew with it!

Not entering. Just wanted to say what a good review. When this was first on the market a friend and I were emailing back and forth because we just didn’t get it.
I am a very, very rusty intermediate level sewer. I am also a mom now, which is a contrast to the last phase in my life when I sewed a lot (high school, which is also where I learned from a wonderful teacher.)
While I can’t wait to start sewing clothing for myself ASAP, realistically, I would ease myself back into things by making much easier projects at first. I’m thinking I would like to make some really cute bunting/flag things for my kids elementary school.
I am really excited about this machine. I read about it on another blog just before Christmas. And truthfully, if I don’t win this from you, I’m going to buy it for myself anyway. Talk about beauty on a budget!

I think I would start with a dress by Colette Patterns. I am still new to sewing and I am trying to focus on creating wardrobe basics that I can wear everyday. Maybe someday I’ll be free of RTW clothes!
Without doubt, I would be making a Sewaholic Davie. I’ve made it before, but have some bicycle-print fabric that I think would look amazing as a Davie. The only problem would be pattern matching on such a narrow print – that’s why I think the camera would be so helpful to get me lining everything up correctly.
Looking to start sewing again now that my baby is out of the house (OK he’s 22 but still my baby) and would love to do some Roman shades for my kitchen.

I am sewing with the machine that my parents bought me when I was 16 (about 40 years ago) I recently realized that the newer machines have all sorts of features that my White machine does not have. I have been wanting to buy a new machine to upgrade but can’t seem to justify the cost right now. This machine would be a great move into a machine with more options, stitches and so many things to explore. I would make myself a button down to try out the button hole feature and then play around with all the decorative stitches that my machine does not have. I’d sew a work dress in the turquoise tweed that I’ve had stashed for far too long.
A friend loaned me some 1970’s cape patterns so my first go on this lovely machine would be whipping up one of those! I’ve been sewing on my trusty thrift store machine for the past few years so this machine would be an awesome addition!
My first project would be a mini skirt in some gorgeous red and blue tartan fabric I’ve been saving. I’ve been very careful not to look at new sewing machines in case I got tempted so I didn’t even know a sewing machine could be internet connected!
My current machine hates jersey/knit fabrics so I’d sew the Coco pattern by Tilly and the Buttons minus the annoying skipped stitches! The machine looks beautiful 😊
First project in the que would be silk pillowcases!
Ooh! My first project would be to finish some jewelry bags I owe family from Christmas two years ago. I made and distributed the makeup bags, and told people the matching jewelry bags were coming… and then my sewing machine started to die. Oops. (Currently can’t even sew a straight line, and it’s not worth repairing. Need a new one.)

Oh, yes! I’m looking into getting a new machine because my vintage Kenmore is having problems that are not resolved with cleaning and tune-up. My first project would be a linen Bellatrix blazer, because it’s been on my list but I’m afraid of my machine messing up something so lovely.

Yay, everybody coming out of the woodwork — including me! 🙂 Honestly, the first thing I would do is download a bunch of stitches from the Play store, and each and every one across a piece of sturdy canvas, just for fun. Then I’d sew the embellushed canvas into a simple tote bag. Because I love experimenting and trying out all the options.

I’m teaching my niece and her daughters to sew. We are working on doll clothes and aprons, the girls are also interested in learning to cook. My niece would like to make a knit top for herself and then some for the girls. I can imagine the hoots and hollers if I win! Two of us could be sewing at the same time!
My first baby is due on my birthday–July 23. I’m not putting any baby clothes on our registry because my goal is to spend $0 on clothes for the entire first year! Instead, I want to make baby’s frocks and leggings and onesies and all from old clothing and fabric.
If I’m going to make my goal, I better get started soon! Right now I have a very basic machine and sure would love an upgrade now that I’m sure sewing is the thing for me!

Yippee! Does anyone ever turn down a free sewing machine 😉 I have a skirt I would like to sew up – I love that this machine comes with a zipper foot, saves me from needing to go to my finicky machine that is the only machine I have with a zipper foot. Wow, maybe I should just buy a zipper foot for my workhorse instead of being so cheap… 🙂
What a fabulous machine! The fist thing I would make would be something that I could wear on an interview. That way if someone commented on my outfit I could say I made it and that would be a plus : ). Since I’m laid off I have a lot of time on my hands so I can finally make all those things I didn’t have the time for. Like everyone else – I’ve got the ginger jeans pattern.
Even tho it’s 28 degrees today, I’m thinking about my next bathing suit. That’s the first thing I would make!

Honestly – I bought some soft stretch denim and another woven plaid to try my hand at a pair or two of slacks. (Have to call them slacks because it sounds a bit more elegant;) OR…Simplicity 1080…so many projects so little time!
The first project(s) I would use the Speigel for is to sew a Grainline Tiny Pocket Tank and Stowe bag with my 13 year old niece who is just learning to sew. It looks like the perfect machine for her to use as we work side by side. Love the phone shelf!
I have had the Lisette Portfolio dress/tunic for a while. I would love to make it in linen & use some of the decorative stitches on the neck, and the sleeve & bottom hems!
This is amazing! If I won this machine I would teach my little niece to sew her first item; a personalised tote bag. The needle camera function would be awesome to show her how the stitches are sewn because she always frightens me by getting too close to the needle “to get a better look”. I would LOVE this! My husband and I are renovating a farm house and there are so many sewing projects on the horizon. First and foremost on the list is proper window treatments! (Something simple, but instant gratification!).

Seems like a lovely machine! I work on an older (read: 20 yrs at least), non-computerized machine, from Huskqvarna, and am happy with it. But, then again, I’ve never used a more modern machine. Nice machine! As the supply officer for our local Sea Cadet unit I would use the machine to alter cadet uniforms and sew patches. Our cadets (and their parents) would be most appreciative:)

My first project would absolutely be a pretty Delphine skirt for work. But my second project would be ludicrous faux leather leggings that I would attempt to add quilted knee patches to, because I can only do sensible grown up for very short bursts.
How cool! I have a couple of vintage straight stitch machines that are great for quilts and simple woven garments, but I’d love something with more stitch options as well as buttonhole capability so I can start sewing more garments. I’d probably sew something simple on this at first like a sorbetto tank just to get a feel for it.

That is indeed a pretty machine! I can ALWAYS use another machine. I especially like ones that have extra fancy stitches. One thing my Bernina 350PE does not have is a 3 step zig zag. If this one has a 3 step zig zag then I’d be sure to give it a go for some lingerie sewing. I’m thinking Watson and some undies.
Almost a year ago, I bought a late 70’s small double wide mobile home and I’ve been working on remodeling/fixing it up since. One thing I really, really need is window coverings and I’ve been eyeing roller blinds and roman shades — particularly roman shades (love them!). I’m on the hunt for fabrics (if you know of any sites that would be good, please share!) and would use this machine to start on my window projects. If I won this machine, I’d use it to make my suit for a spring wedding where I’ll be the groomsman for one of my best friends for nearly two decades. This suit will be a lot of first for me — first time using truly high-end materials (Italian suiting wool, mmmmmm), first involved tailoring project, first time sewing for an event with a hard deadline. My inability to find a suit with an androgynous dapper style and anywhere near enough boob room was one of the things that led me to learn to sew in the first place. If I can do this justice, it’ll be one of the first times I’ve gotten to go to a formal event looking the way I look to myself in my mind. I’m excited and also a bit terrified, and nearly all of my sewing for the next four months will be a series of carefully planned projects to develop through the skills I’ll need to do it justice.

On such a marvelous machine as the Spiegel, my first project would be Gertie’s slip and panties, Butterick 6031. My current machine does not have adjustable presser foot pressure. This makes sewing jersey knits, slinky knits and lace near impossible.
I think that Spiegel wants to make my two year old granddaughter a sweet summer dress!
I would love to have this machine. The first thing I would make is matching skirts for my Granddaughters using some of those fancy stitches.

Gosh — I’m amazed at all the high-tech aspects! Downloading stitches on iTunes? A USB port? A WiFi channel and a stitch cam? What the what??? My head would explode — but in a good way. I think back to the first machine I bought, which was an “inexpensive” beginner’s machine (I couldn’t believe the cost), and it was nothing like this. Look at what 20 years of technological development will do. I’d love to have this machine. I think my first project would be fabric roses for my Mom. I saw this pattern and it looks doable (I’m not that great at sewing); plus my Dad is allergic to roses so my Mom never receives roses. Thanks for the review.

I’ve been wanting to try my hand on sewing jeans! With Spiegel’s metal body, I think it would handle jean sewing. And the holder for a phone would make following the Ginger sew-a-along very convenient! Thanks for the Spiegel 60609 review and opportunity to get a new machine!
I’m impressed that they are so forward thinking, by integrating wifi and a USB port. Some of the older, standard manufacturers should sit up and take notice, because I would love something like that. I guess the first thing I would sew on the Spiegel would be a shirt I started working on last year … I mean, it’s a super simple thing, so why haven’t I finished it? Probably because my other machine is my quilting baby. I just have a hard time setting it up for clothing when I walk into my sewing room and immediately think of quilting because that’s what I do on that machine. Know what I mean?
I would probably use it to sew a pillow case or pajama shorts while teaching a sewing class.

The first thing I would make is a shift dress in something bright and spring-like (not that it is anywhere near spring weather here) or a dress for my 4 year old. She’s always begging for a rainbow of dresses 😄

Sounds like an amazing machine for the price point! I certainly looks and operates VERY similarly to machines that cost a LOT more! I would make my Camas blouse (Thread Theory) next. And I would try out a few of those fancy stitches where the bodice meets the body of the blouse just for fun. My first project would be a grainline moss skirt.

Wow! What a pretty machine! Seems it will be a good little workhorse, too. I especially like seeing the ease in which it handled that delicate Liberty fabric.
Were this beauty to come and live with me (please!!), the first things I would make are a pair of wool crepe trousers with Simplicity 3688 and a printed crepe drape necked blouse. *sigh* The perfect Phryne Fisher outfit.

I remember Spiegel commercials back in the eighties, early nineties? Never thought they’d make sewing machines! I love the tablet holder. The first thing I would sew is a set of bow ties and neckties for my sons. They’ve been asking for a while and my machine is dying a slow sad death 😦 Thanks for the chance!
Ahhh My first project would be to tackle the repairs to my favorite dress, the zipper came off! I have a janome that I LOVE when it is working… but unfortunately it is broken most of the time

What a gorgeous machine! I’d definitely be more likely to sew more often, as I would want it sitting out just to look at. Currently I stash my machine in a closet while not in use, which means that things pile up until I get around to setting it all back up. The first thing I would make isn’t anything exciting: a dust cover for the generator out in the barn. I’ve been meaning to get around to that since before Christmas, but it still hasn’t happened.

I’ve only been seriously sewing for less than a year on an old brother that my grandmother gave me. I’ve been working on my first coat, so realistically if I got a new machine I’d probably finish that up with it…assuming I don’t throw it in the trash in frustration first. I would knock out a whole series of lark and plantain tees! My current machine has to be hacked to accommodate a second spool of thread for a double needle and it’s stretch stitch stinks. I would love an upgrade so I can love all the knits.

Oh, man, she looks like a real beauty! I own a vintage Pfaff which sews beautifully and I just LOVE the IDT but I’d probably use the Spiegel to sew something that is a bit of drag on the Pfaff: buttonholes! It only does 4-step-buttonholes and it’s a little tricky to get them all even on a button-down shirt and not make them all different lengths, and mess with my OCD lol. So a whole army of button-down shirts is probably the road I would go! 🙂
I’d sew baby items for a nursery, including crib skirt, crib sheets, and blankets.
Open worldwide? Whaaaat? I’d probably make a shirt dress first. I actually really like my sewing machine (a very basic brother), only sewing buttonholes on it annoys me so. much.
This looks like a wonderful machine. I would make a dress from a lovely piece of scuba knit (Peacock print) that I purchased last fall from Mood Fabrics. I also have a jacket pattern I would love to sew in a fine wale corduroy. That buttonhole feature looks very tempting.
All of the technology on this machine is exciting. I’d use it to make skirts for my first grown-up job (which starts on the 15th!). I would learn to embroider and use the embroidery stitches to make my homemade pieces look high-quality.
I would make my gazillionth Archer shirt with a green plaid fabric I bought in Tokyo last year.

Oh my, it looks beautiful! I’d be sewing some button front frocks, because I’ll be needing front access for the next year or so. My beloved Bernina 830 is THE BEST MACHINE EVER, but alas, it does not sew very neat or uniform buttonholes (not when I’m behind it anyway). The Spiegel would be a much needed addition to my sewing family!

This Spiegel machine would be perfect for teaching my granddaughter to sew. A perfect beginning project would be a pillowcase using some of the decorative stitches for the hem decoration, next would be pajamas and the list grows, Thank you for the opportunity
Spiegel is still around!?! I used to love their catalog and bought frequently from it. I remember one of my favorite dresses was from there. Sounds like a great machine for my daughter who wants to get started sewing.

I am currently making cycling gear for my husband and I – with an emphasis on bright and visible, with a side order of fits our tall frames. If I won this beauty, I’d probably start with cycling jerseys, using fun patterned fabric from spoonflower (red with black dinosaurs for hubby, pop art poster panels for me!

Hardly an exciting make, but the first thing I’d sew would be an early ’90s Vogue pattern skirt. It’s nothing spectacular, but it does have a yoke and then it flares nicely.

This is such a cool machine! I would sew some lovely spring tops in cotton lawn without them getting chomped up by my rubbish old machine.
This isn’t a brand I’ve heard of in the Germany so it’s interesting to find out what else is out there. If I won I would definitely start with some button downs and summer dresses! To be honest it’s kind of exciting to see them finally use some of the tech advances you see in phones etc, in a sewing machine!

My first project, if I should be fortunate to be the lucky winner, would be to make the “Very” Easy Vogue sort-of Diane V.F. look alike Pattern V8379…using a beautiful pastelish colors jersey knit print…This project has been on my shelf waiting for me to return to my beloved sewing that has been on recess since my husband of 30 years dumped me last year…I am almost finished with my personal pity-party and ready to pick-up those scissors (and yes, I am trying to appeal to your possibly feeling sorry for me!)
Oh wow! This machine sounds so great! I do have one of the more “budget-friendly” machines myself and although it’s okay, overall, I do find myself wishing it had a metal base. I would sew up some comfy knit tops that would work with nursing my daughter. I don’t have enough of those tops, and they’re very expensive. Just slap the maternity label on something and the price skyrockets.
I would use it to make charity quilts for orphaned children and elderly women for my church’s adopted village in Guatemala.

What would I sew first!! Ginger Jeans. My 25 year old machine has been all over the country with the military and is about to bite it. Even after servicing I don’t trust it with heavy denim. I don’t do a lot of fancy sewing, but I need a good basic machine.

I’m not that experienced with patterns yet, but am hoping to be able to refashion the dozens of thrift store finds collecting dust in my closet! With this machine I would attempt more challenging sewing endeavors that my current, second hand sewing machine just will not work on. Specifically I have a 1960’s orange plaid dress that I would love to make some changes on to make it wearable!

I would go crazy with those fun decorative stitches (my current machine has VERY limited stitch options) and then make a simple frock. The Schoolhouse Tunic is my go to for something super easy frock!

I am in the market for making a troupe’s Ceili dresses, after finishing my first ever Irish dance competition dress only last week ( I only found out there are such dresses last November) and would love the Spiegel 60609 to get them done. Ooh it’s beautiful! I would sew new work clothes. That might sound boring but my wardrobe used to be almost entirely handmade, then I had my first baby; she’ll be 1 in a few months and I’ll have to return to work, and my body simply is not the same shape or size that it used to be. I hate shopping for clothes and all my years of handmade clothes are sitting in boxes in case I ever fit them again. So, I need something better than mum’s 30 year old Janome to get me through!

I would make something with lots of buttonholes, because I’m scared of the giant button holer for my Singer 201. I’m sure I won’t be the only person to say this, but I really need a new machine. I recently left a high-paying, soul-sucking job with an evil drug company to work for a non-profit doing (FDA approved) psychedelic research – thought you might think that’s cool, given your recent post about ayahuasca experiences. I’m so so much happier but have very little cash now so I take in sewing to make ends meet. A modern machine could really open up options for this mending work, so I’ll cross my fingers!
What a cute machine! I am just getting back into sewing after a 20 yr hiatus and would love to have a new machine to sew knit fabric garments. I plan to start sewing bras, tops and bottoms for myself. My old machine does not have the fancy stretch stitches that knit fabrics require.

My next project will be partly hand-sewn, but I’d use this for the machine parts. A coworker of mine saw and loved a pillow someone made and posted on reddit with the line “Behold! The field in which I grow my fucks — Lay thine eyes upon it and see that it is barren”. I’ve worked with him for about 3 1/2 years and I’m about to move out of state so I figured I’d try to copy it for him.

This machine sounds like a great design, a quality machine at at affordable price. I love the built-in shelf and the charging spot. I would make a skirt for my college-age niece, who is long on fashion sense and short on funds, with the hope that I could lure her into sewing with the gift of this sweet machine.
I just saw the Spiegel sewing machines online for the first time a couple of weeks ago! I’m showing my age, but when they used to advertise on TV, the announcer would always announce their zip code – which was 60609 – too funny they used it as the model #.
1st Project – I’ve been wanting to make a tunic with a lot of decorative stitching – this would be a perfect machine for it.

If I where so fortunate to win a Spiegel 60609, I would first use it to create a keyhole button In the waistband of the jeans I am sewing, then do some monograms, use the triple stitch zigzag (this stitch is not available to me on any of my three vintage pre-digital Berninas), use the auto threader to help my aging eyes, and try out the stitch cam. Other stitches that look appealing are the basting stitch, the “sew on the button stitch”, and the Greek key design in the premium embroidery stitches.

OMG. I have had two mechanical machines and have never wanted a computerised one until I saw this. I would sew a shirt dress (Colette Hawthorn or sew over it vintage shirt dress) and use those onestep keyhole buttonholes, I’ve always wanted a machine that had those ;o)

Holy cow! I need a new sewing machine! My Singer from 1982 is working fine, but she hasn’t sewn a buttonhole in about 15 years and has a hard time with special fabric, like lightweight pretty stuff.

That Spiegel would enter the sewing machine market is intriguing! I like that it is metal, as is my existing 40!! year old Kenmore basic machine. I actually have a 2016 sewing to do list and time to complete it – next is a dusty green lightweight wool challis dress, 3/4 sleeves.
I think that for me my first project would have to be a dress inspired by a classic film. That way I could watch said film with my tablet on the shelf while I sew. Or maybe some more would leggings to roll the derby in.

The reason I actually don’t sew as much as I want to is because of the current machine I have. I love it, it’s vintage Singer, but man sometimes it just can’t do the harder jobs I try to push on it. I’m also on a pretty thin budget so my dream machine will stay a dream for a few more years. Well it looks very jazzy, very 21st century. I am impressed with the wifi and the electronic display. I have an old Janome that used to be my mothers it sews well but it is not fancy at all. I have thought fleetingly of a nice quilting type machine but mine works well. I am on a handbag craze at the moment so that would be my first project, plus I have some lovely voile that I want to make a summer blouse out of… where to start!

Hi! I’m a fellow Nashvillian and blog/sewing fan! The very first thing I would sew would be pretty simple – a pillow case to display the awesome hand embroidery I made for my sister’s recent wedding.
I would sew some underwear, a bra to be more specific. Also, seeing the alphabet/number stitches this machine does, I could finally stitch the size into the garments for my daughter. I might also have to sew a black skirt, trying out all those embroidery stitches in different colours around the hem.
I’m a super beginner and would love to use this to sew up my first set of carolyn pyjamas!

What would I sew? ALL THE THINGS. But I’d start with a summer blouse with some delicious Liberty lawn in my stash. And I always watch Netflix while I sew, so that little ledge is my favourite feature of this machine.

I’ve seen the catalog, but never knew Spiegel ever made a sewing machine. After poking around I see there was a vintage Vogue/Stitch Spiegel machine, made around the 1950’s-60s I’d guess. Pretty cool. I admit I’d like to see how their re-entry into the sewing machine realm compares by sewing up my first tries at a basic made to measure pants from Bootstrap Fashions for me and my daughter.

Love this machine! I would love to sew a few skirts that could easily transition from work to dinners out on the town. I’m long waisted and have a slight hourglass shape, so finding cute skirts that fit my waist and my rear and aren’t terribly short can be quite the challenge.

For that amazing price I’ve already asked my husband if he’d consider attempting to bring me one back when he makes a trip stateside in the autumn (answer: not a chance with the baggage allowance 😢) However if I was lucky enough to win one (pleeeaaase! Spiegel 60609 looks like a winner, i love all of the decorative stitches! I would make a boho inspired tunic & use those decorative stitches in the yoke. The phone shelf is a nice idea, I love to listen to podcasts & audiobooks as I sew!

A lovely looking machine. My first project would be part of my wedding sewing – the groom’s waistcoat. I’m hoping to get that out of the way to concentrate on the dresses.

I have a huge pile of fabric for projects, but I’ve noticed I lack blouses and tops, so my first project would be that.
Winning a machine would be a great reason to go to the fabric store for a new pattern and fabric – or maybe finally get something cool from Closet Case Files, like her sexy jeans pattern. But, knowing me, I’d get a bunch of Doctor Who fabric and make a fun geeky dress out of a simple pattern.
Wow 🙂 I’d sew my daughter a knit jacket – she’s in love with these gold anchor buttons out of my tin, and I’ve had to promise to make her something with them on!

I’ve been sewing for just a couple of years so I’m not a novice but keep learning and enjoying about sewing. my sewing machine is good for basic stuff but is really simple, doesn’t have any embroidery stitches but love that works really well! If I could have this spiegel sewing machine, I would make a boho blouse full of these darling embroidery stitches in different colors around the neck and the hem, on a white cotton voile…I’ve been dreaming about sewing something like that for a few months but as said before, I don’t have fancy stitches on my sewing machine and hand embroidery is lovely but no good for my hands. So, thank you very much for this chance! Fingers crossed!
If I won this, my first project would probably be some kind of artwork made out of all of the pretty stitches. Or, I would splurge on some Liberty that I wouldn’t put near my current clunker and make the tiniest, sweetest, most impractical baby dress I could imagine.

Such a beautiful machine. I’m currently two months pregnant with my first baby, and so the first thing I’d sew is some maternity clothing! I’ve had my eye on the BurdaStyle BD7320 Misses’ Maternity Dress for a while now – the sleeveless version to keep me cool in summer.
And once I get out my maternity wardrobe out of the way, I’d make a start on some adorable baby clothes 🙂

I have a fabric I saved because I used to fantasize I’d sew it into a beautiful jacket when I had time. But I never had time. Now that my schedule cleared up, my sewing machine is acting up and won’t collaborate. So, a Spiegel sewing machine would provide great flexibility, giving me creative freedom to sew an entire new wardrobe… but, let’s be reasonable, I’d start with a jacket.
This week I begin my retirement and perhaps it’s Kismet, but the first thing on my bucket list is to start sewing again. I have the fabric, the patterns and lots of enthusiasm, but alas , also a semi-broken sewing machine. If luck is on my side I would use this amazing Spiegel to sew some Ginger flares, or a sunhat for my granddaughter or a backpack for the hiking adventures I’m planning. Whoever wins will be a happy sewer, I’m sure.

I’ve been procrastinating on making some knitting project bags and a Hollyburn skirt, because I have no sewing machine and have to do it by hand – not so bad once I get started, but, like many things that get procrastinated on, it’s the getting started that’s the hard part. If I were to acquire a sewing machine, those would be the first things to get made, since I’ve already got fabric ready to go!

I think the first thing I would make would be the start of my 1850s/1860s ballgown dress. My sister and I are planning on making these crazy dresses together and it’d be nice to have something that’s a step up from my dearly loved Singer.
I’d probably just use for it whatever I am sewing then… maybe a named wyoming jeans.
I would make a knit anything, t shirts, Watson, anything. My machine chokes and dies on the stuff.
I’d probably finish my overalls with them because my very patient bottom-of-the-line viking does not like the brushed twill I am using at all.

I have a fairly basic Singer, at least 20 years old. It would be great to enter the 21st century with a computerized machine. (I just got a smart phone in December!) I’ve been making cute, very packable knit dresses for my daughter to take for her internship this summer hundreds of miles away in D.C., so my first project would be something for me. I just bought the Grainline Studio Morris blazer pattern and am on the lookout for a lovely navy/white floral (not too busy) that would be appropriate. Yep, definitely the Morris for me!
Shirts for my husband 🙂 He’s a tall slender drink of water, so shirts are always too wide or sleeves to short.

If I won I would get to the stack of pre-cut ready-to-go projects that have been sitting next to my not-so-great sewing machine for the last couple of months. What I wouldn’t give for some stitch options and a functioning button hole!
What would I sew first? Probably a new dress for myself. Because winter will end eventually even if I’m currently wearing what feels like 16 layers of clothes to keep warm and I will want to wear something light and pretty when that warm weather hits. Sounds like a neat machine! I use an 40-something year old pfaff, which is a great work horse, but some “new fangled” technology sure would be fun to play with! 🙂
Gosh, do i have to decide for one thing? Seems impossible. Weeeell, an asymmetrical pencil-ish skirt from knipmode is in order to motivate myself to get uni finished and have something to power dress for the final exam, even though it’s still a fair bit away…. Girl’s got to dream 😉

I usually don’t comment but have been reading your blog for a couple of years and I just have to take part in this giveaway.
The first project I would sew on this beauty would be a dark blue wool vest with coral lining for my boyfriend with a pattern from La maison Victor.
I normally avoid buttonholes because my machine needs four steps and they never look quite as good as I’d like them to, so maybe the one step buttonhole automatic on the Spiegel machine would save me as you can’t really make a men’s vest without buttons. 🙂
A bra of course. I have the same problem with my now 15 year old Bernina the pin that holds the handle on keeps on falling out so I have to carry it around like a baby.

Oh wow, I’m actually on the hunt for a new sewing machine this year. I’ve had a plastic, bottom of the line, beginner Singer for about 10 years now (but only seriously sewing on it for the past 3 years) and it’s been fairly good to me but it is slowly giving up the ghost.
The first thing I would sew on it is another Sew Liberated Sunday Picnic Dress (OOP). I made one a couple years back out of some black poly satin and I can only image what it would look like in this gorgeous blue silk I’ve picked up, and sewn on a machine that looks like it’s much kinder to delicate fabrics than my beast is.
I just bought a bunch of faux leather, so my first project would probably be a tote bag!
I know exactly what I’d do first! I would finally dig in to M6696, which has been on my to sew list FOREVER! My machine is lovely, but it has a 4 step buttonhole, and I have yet to work up the courage to do buttonholes. This would make it so much easier!!!
Plus, I know my boyfriend would appreciate a quieter machine so that he can watch TV while I sew for a change.

I have just drawn up a little SWAP of 10 pieces as I need so much, first a pair of togs (swimmers for aqua aerobics) – I think having that little usb and shelf for the device is pure gold! to be able to watch (well listen) some stuff while sewing all this stuff. Nice looking machine.

My daughter is nearly 10 and already bitten by the sewing bug, so the first project on that lovely machine wouldn’t be by me, it would be in her hands so we can sew side by side! Her skills right now have her making one of her favorite garments, skirts! She saw the machine on your blog and declared it PRETTY! and says a circle skirt (although she calls it a spinning skirt, she is 10.)

I am impressed with this machine as it is difficult to find something with a reasonable price tag that doesn’t skip stitches. I would finally tackle a silk button down shirt. I have mastered the cotton version but have been afraid to venture to a new fabric. Maybe a new machine is all I need 🙂

Oh, my! So many replies! I’m seriously tempted by this machine, as I’m still sewing on my mother’s 1970s Singer and it often struggles. It couldn’t handle top stitching four layers of soft shell fleece last week on a Jalie jacket. If I were to win, my first project would be… oh, how to choose, how to choose… a Grainline Alder shirt dress made with fabric I bought in Italy last year… or, more likely, yet more knit tees and dresses for my young daughters. I do wonder, in your running the machine through it’s paces, how it handles thick layers. For instance, leather or making jeans? I’m keenly interested as this might be the way for me to go instead of not acquiring any new(er) machine because I’m not going to spend $2000 on one. Thanks for sharing your work on your blog!

Since committing to an entirely me made wardrobe for any new garments that I add to my wardrobe, I’ve secretly harboured a desire to take a sturdy sewing machine to my classroom to teach my students basic sewing skills. I can imagine the whir of the sewing machine, while several other art projects are going on. I can imagine it would be used with careful supervision. I can imagine that my students would feel the same pride as I do when they learn how to make some simple projects like drawstring bags. I envision making some beautiful journals with them, perhaps even to give away to our children’s hospital. Such joy. Thanks for the opportunity.

Very comprehensive review, thankyou! I use an old machine passed on to me by my mother in law. It’s great in all respects- solid metal and easy to use- except that it won’t do buttonholes.
I thought the problem was my lack of skill for the longest time, until my mother-in-law mentioned that she never managed buttonholes on it either. She’s a good dressmaker, so it’s clearly the machine.
Because I’m a beginner, I just avoid making anything with buttonholes, or substitute other closures. I dream of shirt dresses though!

What a beautiful machine! I need to make a whole new wardrobe as I’ve just had a baby and my cleavage alone is not what it used to be, so I’d start with about 3 Archer shirts and take it from there.

Thanks for the review Lauren. I would never think to look at this machine without your review! I would whip up a couple of bras as my first project. I bought the Craftsy class but hadn’t started it so I think that would be the perfect way to hit two goals with one stone!

Wow, that machine is beautiful! I’ve been trying to get into sewing my own underwear and bras and that’s definitely what I would make first. My current machine has a tendency to pull stretchy fabrics down into the bobbin mechanism, especially if I’m using a narrow seam allowance. I can’t figure out why. It’s a ~10 year old Kenmore I got off Craigslist.

Holy moly! I have a whole list of projects that I would sew on this swell machine (after possibly murdering my beginner Brother machine last month). I think a Lady Skater or a Francoise top my list right now. Or some snazzy Aires exercise pants from Seamwork with super cool stitching along the seams. So many options!
I’ve got way too many projects that I want to make but I think the first one I would do, would probably be a purple cotton dress (probably Elisalex, but who knows).
A peasant blouse with a few decorative borders partnered up down the front is at the top of my sewing list.
So, I have two machines that I love, but my husband keeps saying he wants me to enter to win this for him! The machines we have are mechanical, but he is techy, so I think he would absolutely love this. He says the first thing he would make is a Strathcona Henley by Thread Theory. LOVE this machine! My first project would be a plum-purple velvet corset, as the crowning glory of my witch Halloween costume. I have all the materials ready and waiting… but I’m too afraid that my current machine will mangle the beautiful, expensive velvet.
I love that you can sew with a button instead of just with a pedal. My toddler looooves commandeering the foot pedal for her own pretend play and it’s so frustrating to spend a half hour looking for the pedal for a twenty-second mending project.

I’m a big woman who loves to walk, and the “chub-rub” has worn out a lotta jeans over the years. It seemed such a waste to throw them away, I’ve been wanting to upcycle them for a long time. After our office moved I went right by the Curtain Shop on the way home every day, where they had fabric samples for just 50c – gorgeous silks, linens, all kinds of great stuff. I hatched this idea to make pillow covers with denim on one side and cool coordinating fabrics on the other, so the fancy side is up for looks and the denim side you can lay on without worrying about messing it up. Beads were my first love, but all these gorgeous fabrics have me wanting to learn more and try my hand at new stuff. Pillows are just the beginning!

The first project I would stitch up with this machine would be my vintage vogue 1954 reprint in a stunning teal linen I bought years ago with a similar project in mind. Unfortunately my vintage 1966 singer just isn’t up to the job anymore and I fear after serving my mother and myself for many years it may be throwing in the towel 😦 a new machine would be a godsend as I’ve had a few requests for dresses that I haven’t been able to get past the hand basted stage due to the lack of machine consistency. Sounds like this Speigel machine deserves just as much credit! Yay for making sewing more accessible to everyone!

I truly am in love with the style of this machine. If I won it I would definitely sew something white and gold for the spring! I absolutely love my vintage Elna, but it has some limitations. Every time I try to sew stretchy knits, I have to add a strip of thin paper on the bottom. Otherwise my little Elna struggles! The Spiegel would save me a lot of trace paper!

My Singer 5430 sewing machine doesn’t seem very cooperative lately and won’ t handle thick fabrics or layers, so fingers crossed, I get lucky! Winters in Greece are mild and I rarely wear coats. I am having my eyes on the Grainline studio Tamarack jacket or the Republique du Chiffon Bernadette jacket pattern.
I haven’t made anything for myself since my wedding dress, so I would definitely start trying to work through my stash! I’ve been wanting to make a travel jacket with lots of zipped pockets so that would be first I think…

Sounds as though you were pretty impressed with this. I’d sew a lined spring jacket, with leather inserts to test it out on a variety of fabrics. There might also be top stitching! I have a number of projects in the works and my machine just went sour this week, the nearest repair is an hour a way so I was looking into finding a new machine! My first project would be a gorgeous tote/purse by designed by Noodlehead, I’ve already got some amazing Japanese canvas. I would immediately make another Watson Bra! I’ve been wanting to upgrade from my Pfaff Hobby machine (the first machine I ever owned and well loved) for awhile now. It isn’t able to change stitch length, which I found troublesome when stitching zigzags the first Watson bra I made. It also isn’t great at buttonholes, a thing I need to finish my Archer and Meissa currently in progress!

I am trying to talk myself into trying to make my first bra so that is what I would make.
The majority of my sewing the past few years has been for my grandchildren, so the first thing I would make with the Spiegel would be something for me – maybe a skirt.
I would love to be able to sew buttonholes and stitch knits. I have and older singer sew and touch (aka sew and cuss) that I use for buttonholes but its being tempermental at the moment.
I would sew a winter coat with this….like 5 winter coats! My current machine is a wimp.

Hi Lauren! I’d sew a smock top for my daughter, Daisy, using some of those fancy embroidery stitches on the gathering. It might not be all that glamorous but Daisy would love it, and it would fill a gap in her wardrobe. I am finding it increasingly difficult to find RTW clothes that fit her, as she has Downs meaning her proportions are unusual (narrow shoulders, pot belly, short limbs, etc). I have pretty much resigned myself to making most of her clothes from now on, but with a machine like the Speigel I’m sure it would be great fun!
First thing I would sew? I’d finish the totoro costume my 2 year old son asked me to make, because who doesn’t want to be a forest spirit? My machine crapped out on me last week. 😦

I generally love my (low level, mechanical) Viking, but I just finished off another beautiful shirt for my husband with pretty pathetic buttonholes. My first project would be something that took advantage of a better buttonhole feature, most likely a shirt.
I just started sewing recently and have slowly been making my way through Love at First Stitch. I would definitely tackle the Mimi blouse with this machine!

whoops, I left a bit out! My first project would be a few more lessons for my niece on basic gifts she can make for baby showers and a new Knight outfit my two-year-old could wear everywhere (no glitter, unlike the rest of the princess items, but a snazzy shiny silver upholstery velvet instead).
I might just make a crazy quilt using the ‘fancy’ stitches.
I’d make my first log cabin quilt with my mom!

The first thing I would sew with this machine is a lined LBD with some subtle hem embroidery. I’m still kickin’ it with a Kenmore Ultra Stitch 8 that was a gift from a friend’s garage clean out. She does pretty well, but those embroidery stitches look so pretty!

The first thing I’ll do with the Spiegel 60609 Sewing Machine is sew my cat a new bed! she’s turning 18 in March 1st and she would definitely appreciate a new bed with embroidery decorations 🙂
Looks like a great machine! The first thing I would stitch up with it is that plaid flannel Colette Negroni I’ve had on the back burner. A nice opportunity to practice matching plaids and try out some of those fancy stitches!

What a gorgeous looking machine, and so made for a 21st century sewist. I think a machine this special deserves a special project, so i would be sewing up a grainline cascade duffle coat in mustard 🙂

Ooh nice. I’d go for sewing up a tessuti Sydney jacket (I just made one for my mum on her birthday, and now I want my own). And then I would branch out into making my own underwear!
I make hand felted and fabric wall hangings, and it looks as though the Spiegel would be excellent for adding embroidery stitches to them.
There’s this skirt pattern called Hollyburn I’ve been meaning to try – I seem to recall reading somewhere that it’s a good one lol. Maybe I’ll make one (or seven😜)
I would probably finish my Simplicity 2247 dress if I had this machine. This dress has lingered on forever, though it will be the second one I’ve made. This looks like a good machine.

I would make the dance costume my daughter has been asking for for 5 years. My machine is 25 years old and only likes sewing mid weight woven. Lycra is eaten for breakfast!

That is a nice looking machine and I would love a machine with speed control. The first thing I would sew on it if I won would be a pencil skirt with a flounce in the back from a OOP vogue pattern I was lucky enough to track down.
For me, definitely a tossup between the Bombshell swimsuit (I am using my grandmother’s sewing machine and it is averse to stretchy fabrics) or Ginger jeans (see previous parentheses, machine also doesn’t care for heavy fabric). I have a sewing club at school and my pulling off one or the other would definitely have even more students interested in learning.

Hi my daughter purchased a simplicity machine for me for Christmas and birthday I like the machine very disappointed with the embroidery is too small I have no use for them they’re to small I would have returned it but it was a gift from my daughter how can I get the embroidery on my sewing machine larger .☹️
