Completed: Chevron’d Ginger Skirt

4 Apr

Here’s another piece that I have seriously been planning for a couple of years – the chevron’d Ginger skirt!

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

Another stupendous idea delayed by lack of fabric – why why whyyyy is it so hard to find a good, 1″ stripe, non-stretch fabric, apparel-weight? Whyyy? I find lots of striped shirting fabrics (too lightweight, stripes too narrow), striped stretch twill (holding out for the lycra-less, pls), striped knit (ok, yes please, but not for this particular project!), or stripes in some kind of weird array of colors. Not to mention the overabundance of home decor striped fabric – but I’ve found I just don’t like all the structure that comes with home decor weight. My ass is not meant for curtains to hang off of it.

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

I was PRETTY FREAKING EXCITED when I found this fabric at last month’s flea. Hiding under a pile of vintage fabrics (all good, I bought nearly all of them lolz) were 4 yards of my dream yellow-and-white-1″-striped-cotton. In a rare unselfish move on my part, I ripped the yardage in half and sent 2 yards to Sunni (who I was doing a great fabric swap with earlier this month and holyyyy shit you guys I cannot wait to start digging into the lovely stuff she sent me!), keeping the other 2 yards for myself and this skirt. And here she is – finally, the striped/chevron’d skirt of my dreams!

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

As I mentioned before, this is the Ginger from Colette Patterns. I made view 3, which gave my striped fabric a nice chevron. I know chevrons are REALLY hip right now (and every time I pass something chevron’d at Target, I groan. A lot.), like to the point of already looking super trendy and dated, but I do like them for clothing. I’d say something like I hope they never go out of style, but I pretty much wear whatever I want regardless, so let’s just say I hope I can continue finding good striped fabric to make my own! Hopefully more frequent than once every couple of years 🙂

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

I’ve made this skirt a few times before, so this definitely ain’t my first rodeo, but I did have to size down since my previous versions don’t fit me anymore (well, maybe the Gazer does. I haven’t pulled that one out of summer storage yet to check). I cut the pieces on a single layer so I could be really accurate with lining up those stripes, and it (mostly)paid off.

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

I even went as far as to center the yellow vertical stripe in the middle of the waistband, so everything would be nice and balanced.

Now that you’ve seen the gorgeous, time to share my shame…

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

Kind of bummed that the chevrons on the side seams don’t match up 😦 I actually think it looks much much better in these photos vs real life (and since I took these photos, I have worn the skirt and been totally ok with the barely-matched-up side seams). Like I said. I did a very careful job of cutting everything out on the single layer, but the way this skirt is shaped means that you either get the fabric on-grain, or the side seams match all the way up to the waistband. One or the other, make your choice! I decided the grain was more important – plus, they kinda sorta match, right? 🙂

The other shame is that dammed invisible zipper! Guysss, inserting an invisible zip into a bias-cut garment isn’t the easiest thing you’ll ever do. I stabilized my seam allowances with 1 1/4″ wide stripes of silk organza cut on the straight grain, and the zipper is ALMOST perfect, but there is a tiny bubble at the bottom. I’m trying to decide if it bothers me enough to rip it out and fix it. Eh. It looks pretty bad in that picture!

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

But, you know, issues aside – it’s a fun skirt! And it’s fun to wear, although I do feel like I’m exposing myself every time I bend over to pick something up. Bias cut rides up all kind weird.

This fabric was also kind of weird, amazing as it is. When I first grabbed it, it felt like a great bottom weight – slightly stiff, a bit of body, a subtle sheen. After the prewash, however, the fabric majorly softened up and weight-wise, it felt a lot more like quilting cotton. I was hesitant at first, as I wanted a stiffer shape to my skirt, but I’m pretty happy with how the drape of the fabric looks with the bis cut. The only drawback was that those bias sides stretched a loooooot. Like, so much. That’s probably a good part of the reason why the side seams don’t match up so nicely.

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

To give the waistband some structure, I interfaced the outside with my normal fusible interfacing, and sewed hair canvas to the facing. While this particular waistband isn’t quite as high as the other views on the pattern – and it’s not shaped, either – I still didn’t want it to crumble when I bent over. Not a good look!

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

Oh yeah, I used the bicycle fabric left over from this dress to face the inside of the waistband. It’s a cute little surprise!

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

I also used the last of my yellow lace hem binding for the hem. Side note – the packaging for this stuff (it’s from the 70s) boasts that it’s “Like Pretty Underwear!” which makes me laugh every time.

Ginger Skirt - chevrons

So that’s it! Simple skirt, simple fabric – but I love the results! I guess I’m on a major skirt kick right now; I’ve got anther one cut out waiting for assembly as I type this.

As a side note – the shirt I’m wearing is my button down from this outfit. I LOVE this shit and I’ve worn it soo many times since completing it! The reason why I’m pointing it out, though, is because this is what the shirt looks like after a wash with no ironing – I just shook it out and hung it to dry. It has some subtle wrinkles, but nothing crazy – it kind of reminds me of linen with how the wrinkles just look relaxed and natural. Except it’s cotton! Pretty cool; I love getting away with not ironing my clothes 😉

Your mention of the vintage hem lace made me giggle a bit, because I also have a large stash of 70s hem lace in bizarre colors with the same tag line. Why does my skirt need it’s own underwear? That is like wearing two pair. hah.

    • LLADYBIRD April 4, 2014 at 12:30 pm #

I mean, I love wearing underwear and all, but I don’t love it THAT much 🙂

So pretty! Yellow and chevrons are such a good combination, it reminds me of beaches and ice cream cones and summer. And I love the bicycle facing, it’s so adorable!

  3. sewcialwarrior April 4, 2014 at 8:30 am #

I love the comment “my ass is not made for curtains to hang off” had me laughing out loud. I like the skirt too 🙂

  4. Jane April 4, 2014 at 8:31 am #

It’s fab and it’s yellow, what more could you ask for?! x

    • LLADYBIRD April 4, 2014 at 12:31 pm #

Damn straight! You’re my yellow soul sister, Jane~~

  5. Lara April 4, 2014 at 8:40 am #

I love it- and would never have noticed the mis matched sides or the zip button. It’s so classic and will go with everything if you change the belt you wear with it!

  6. Carolyn April 4, 2014 at 8:48 am #

Oh, this is so charming! I love everything about it. And what a lovely job you did on the inside as well – especially that little surprise inside the waistband – I really need to start doing more stuff like that myself. I especially love it styled with that belt, the perfect little “pop” of contrast!

  7. Bec Stitches April 4, 2014 at 8:52 am #

Cute little skirt, I’m still in love with the shirt:)
I have a green and white chevron..but it’s smallish. Have NO idea what to do with it o_O

  8. Nakisha April 4, 2014 at 8:54 am #

Awwww! I have been looking for about a month now for yellow fabric for a skirt. Nothing yet. Love this so much. The chevrons are way awesome. Way!

    • LLADYBIRD April 4, 2014 at 12:31 pm #

Yeah, I’ve been looking for a good solid yellow twill, but no dice. This one is 10x better, though!

  9. hashigal April 4, 2014 at 8:58 am #

THAT is fucking gorgeous! And it’s making me rethink plans for some delightful white and blue sateen that I found this week.

  10. clsoetcasefiles April 4, 2014 at 8:59 am #

I love this. Fuck trends. CHEVRON FOREVER.

  11. nenewhis April 4, 2014 at 9:51 am #

LOVE IT. The whole thing. This would be my uniform, every hour, every day.

  12. Kelly April 4, 2014 at 10:03 am #

It’s perfect! I love that color yellow and yeah, I guess chevrons don’t bother me so much when they’re in clothes.

  13. Sunni April 4, 2014 at 10:08 am #

I LOVE this! And, OMG OMG OMG, I may just have to copy you because you did generously give me some of the exact same fabric! Yiiipppppeeee! Oh love!

Additionally, I would like to add that I have made this view of the skirt and I too had the exact same problem with the side seams not matching up and with the zipper in the back. That zipper was very problematic for me – and actually I think yours looks quite good. Mine had spines!! Who outfit is just darling!

    • LLADYBIRD April 4, 2014 at 12:33 pm #

YES OMG please do! I was secretly hoping you would make a skirt too so we could be twinsies haha!

  14. Susie Homemaker, MD April 4, 2014 at 10:09 am #

Have you tried pressing the zipper seam from the outside over your ham? That can help with zippers in curved seams. If you rip it out, put it back in with the fabric draped over the ham. Cute skirt!

    • LLADYBIRD April 4, 2014 at 12:33 pm #

Oh yeah, that zipper’s been through quite a few ham steamings (interesting choice of words there, Lauren!). Good idea on putting it back in over a curve, tho!

  15. Lady Stitcher April 4, 2014 at 10:20 am #

Great skirt! Love those chevrons – the first thing I thought when I saw the photo preview for this post was how impossible I find it to get striped fabric (even in knits!). Those secret waistband bicycles are fantastic!

  16. Rox Guillemette April 4, 2014 at 10:25 am #

Awesome skirt: very summery! Don’t fret about the sides not matching: it,s gorgeous anyways!

  17. Elle April 4, 2014 at 11:24 am #

I love it! Yellow and blue was one of my favorite color combinations when I was younger, so of course I’m digging the blue hair with the yellow skirt 🙂 Also, I just have to reiterate how much I LOVE that blouse. It doesn’t look like much on the pattern envelope, but I’m really glad to see you made it up and it worked for you! I’m a chesty gal, like you, and I love blouses but find them often hard to fit if you’ve got big knockers. Thanks for test-driving this one for me 🙂

    • LLADYBIRD April 4, 2014 at 12:35 pm #

It’s a great pattern! Super easy to fit, too, thanks to all those princess seams. Always happy to provide pattern service, especially when it means I discover my new favorite pattern that I want to make a million renditions of! 🙂

  18. weefrills April 4, 2014 at 12:40 pm #

    I love it hard!

  19. SeeKatSew April 4, 2014 at 12:45 pm #

Love love love this skirt! A+! But seriously, what is up with finding stripped fabric??
Have you thought about getting striped fabric printed for you?

    • SeeKatSew April 4, 2014 at 12:50 pm #

      *striped, not stripped (oopsy!)

  20. poldapop April 4, 2014 at 1:46 pm #

    This skirt is PERFECT.

  21. Kim April 4, 2014 at 1:48 pm #

Cool skirt! I’ve been thinking about a chevron ginger ever since I bought the pattern, which was actually my first pattern I bought, together with the crepe dress (which I’ve loaned to a gf, but never got back).. Still need to put it on my to sew list!

  22. Peter April 4, 2014 at 2:32 pm #

A totally cool skirt. Who cares if the stripes don’t line up on the side — nobody is going to notice but you, as I know you know. So many nice finishing details too!

  23. carolinascallin April 4, 2014 at 2:56 pm #

Great job – and you did those chevrons perfectly!

Enjoy wearing it…so fun to finally find that perfect fabric design 🙂

  24. tworandomwords April 4, 2014 at 7:07 pm #

I’ve also been looking for a bottom weight stripe for this exact pattern, and have the same problem – they’re either way too heavy, or they’re top weight and the stripes are crazy thin.
I did once make a ginger from a tartan fabric and I tried matching the side seams up… which put the grain off as you mention, and it looked pretty crap. Not obviously bad, but somehow it made my hips way wider than they really are (and they’re pretty wide already)

  25. Rochelle New April 4, 2014 at 8:57 pm #

I love the fabric! It’s funny how much things can change in the wash though. I’m sorry you’re not totally happy with the way it turned out but I think the overall effect of the skirt is awesome! The yellow and white chevron stripe looks extra amazing with your mermaid hair 🙂

  26. Birgit April 5, 2014 at 1:41 am #

    The stripes are perfection!
Maybe the fabric here is a linen mix?

  27. Laura April 5, 2014 at 3:31 am #

I love it! This is such a fun summery skirt.

  28. Rachel April 5, 2014 at 4:07 am #

Thank you for bringing Spring to our screens via this great outfit – lively and vibrant! Rachel ☺

  29. Tilly Buttons April 5, 2014 at 5:27 am #

    WAAAAANT.

  30. sallie April 5, 2014 at 9:09 am #

Fabulous! The bias cut version is my favorite version of the Ginger skirt! And your chevron stripes make it look so good! (P.S. LONG LIVE THE CHEVRON!!!!)

  31. Sarai April 5, 2014 at 9:25 am #

This looks awesome! Oh, I want it to be summer so bad.

That is a totally perfect stripe and a great shade of yellow too. You’re so right about finding a good apparel weight stripe. Our local store has a million different home dec stripes, but the apparel choices are pretty sad.

  32. Sally April 5, 2014 at 4:42 pm #

This skirt is awesomesauce!!! You hit the nail right on the head about lack of good striped fabrics in weightier apparel – I’m super jealous that you found this at the flea! And the perfet color combo!! So great 🙂 Oh and the bicycles on the inside really made me smile 🙂 Ok, done now!

  33. bimbleandpimble April 5, 2014 at 5:12 pm #

Freaking epic- that fabric is delish! My red and white chevron Ginger is on regular rotation in my wardrobe too. Chevron is where it is at and what not.

  34. Hilary Anema April 6, 2014 at 3:15 am #

Well at least no one will run you over! I am hanging out for another review of Vogue patterns. Your reviews cheer me no end.

  35. missjoiedevivre April 6, 2014 at 5:11 am #

Those stripes are absolutely perfect for this chevron look! And it looks fantastic. I don’t think the side seams are that obvious (and it’s still better than RTW) and to get the look at the front? Worth it.

  36. jamahistory April 6, 2014 at 6:46 am #

This is so great! And I wouldn’t have noticed the stripes not totally matching up on the side if you hadn’t pointed it out.
I have found it really hard to find yellow fabric, especially mustard yellow for skirts, so I ended up with a bright yellow skirt because I gave up waiting for the perfect mustard!

  37. Tasha @ By Gum, By Golly April 7, 2014 at 8:15 am #

That really is super cute! I love that the stripes are yellow instead of black or navy, which I feel like I see more often anyway. The chevrons look fantastic, it was worth holding out for the perfect fabric because the scale is just right! I love the little touch of the bicycles on the inside too. Cute, cute!

  38. maddie April 7, 2014 at 11:50 am #

I feel your frustration with trying to find good weight striped fabrics. It’s hard! I have found that a lot of the stiffness in home dec fabrics are removed with a simple washing; after one cycle, it becomes very soft.

  39. yosami April 8, 2014 at 5:32 am #

    Chevron-tastic! Fab!

  40. kimmie April 9, 2014 at 11:10 am #

OK, can I be honest. I have started to LOATHE chevron….maybe it is just oversaturation. Zip zags are not a new concept, yet I feel pinteresters everywhere think that it is a new invention.
That being said- I LOVE THIS SKIRT so so so much. I have already gushed to you like 900 times about it. The color combo and silhouette are really kickass (and then I saw the cute little bicycle trim and lost my mind)

  41. thenerdyseamstress April 9, 2014 at 6:07 pm #

I think it’s fantastic! I think I need to make the Ginger skirt ASAP! The problem you came up with this skirt where you only can line up the grain or the side seam has been boggling my mind. How do you line up the grainline and side seams for plaids when every plaid is different? Or is it dependent on the pattern itself, where one lends itself for plaid matching better than the other? Am I over thinking this? What voodoo magic do you do for all of your matched plaid garments?

    • LLADYBIRD April 11, 2014 at 3:50 pm #

It depends on both the pattern and the plaid – some patterns don’t lend themselves to plaid matching (and usually they’ll say it somewhere on the envelope), and some plaids just work better with less seamlines. There’s not really a hard and fast answer to this, since it can vary so wildly.

For my plaid and stripes, I look for balanced designs (i.e., the pattern should be a mirror image on the fabric) and patterns with very little seamlines, or areas that will look good with some bias thrown in.

  42. laurajane April 13, 2014 at 10:27 am #

Wow – thanks for sharing all these details! I am forewarned about sewing a bias skirt! I think the stripes look fantastic and it doesn’t matter that they don’t ALL match. It’s not possible, is it, when seams aren’t straight? I’m not very good at left-brained things. i think your skirt is fantastic! BTW, when I struggle with a zipper, I go for a topstitched, exposed one. Looks great and super easy!

  43. symondezyn April 24, 2014 at 10:32 am #

YES, I love it – it’s yellow and amazing and I love the details – especially your lace hem binding ‘like pretty underwear’ – awesome 🙂
