Giveaway: The Complete Photo Guide to Clothing Construction

Hey everyone! Remember Christine Haynes, maker of the Emery dress pattern? Well, Christine has recently released her second book, The Complete Photo Guide to Clothing Construction, and I’m excited to be the next stop on the blog tour!

CPG Clothing Contruction High res

When Christine originally asked me if I wanted to preview the book and take part in the tour, I didn’t even finish reading her email before I started typing my ‘YES YES YESSSSS’ response right back to her (good thing I did finish reading before I actually sent it, though- because at first, I thought she was saying she was planning a physical book tour and would end up in Nashville! Doh! Christine, you should still come to Nashville, tho :)). I really love sewing books, almost to a fault – I have a few dozen on my bookshelf, and only that few because I tend to cull them pretty aggressively so they don’t end up taking over my sewing room. Even though I’m not a beginner, I especially love the books geared toward beginners – I love all the photos and how-tos, and I still find myself learning new things from time to time!

The Complete Photo Guide to Clothing Construction is a book that is definitely geared toward beginners – if you need hand holding, this is the book for you. I’m actually pretty amazed at all the information Christine managed to cram in this deceptively small looking book – from choosing the correct thread and needle, to pretreating fabric, to deciphering the envelope of a sewing pattern, to those amazing step-by-step photo guides for a whole array of techniques. The general consensus on this book seems to be that everyone wishes they had it when they started sewing – and I absolutely agree! Just the zipper section alone would have sent angels singing to my sewing room if I’d had this shit back when I was first trying to understand how to operate my sewing machine. I think the best way to learn it hands-on with a good tutor, but that’s not always an option for everyone. Having this book would be the next best thing – it’s like having a tutor in your sewing room 24/7, but in print! Ha!

IMG_7003

I think this was the tutorial that excited me the most about this book. Yes, it’s geared toward beginners, but then she throws things like this in the mix. A full color, photo tutorial on sewing a front fly zipper! And it’s a good one, too! See – a beginner could TOTALLY tackle this technique with Christine by their side.

(psst! You can click the photos to enlarge!)

IMG_7002

I also love this how-to on shortening a zipper- isn’t it sooo much more clear than the sad little insert that comes with your Coats and Clark zip? Especially since, yes, you can totally shorten a zip by machine. I think I did mine by hand for the first, oh, 7 years of my sewing career – and trying to find a needle with matching thread in the heat of the moment? Forget about it! Half my stuff from back then has self-made zipper stops in some obnoxious mismatched shade of whatever I happened to find in the nearest pincushion. Again, I would have LOVED to have this book at my side when trying to figure this stuff out.

IMG_7006

This is probably my favorite part of the book – scattered throughout are photos of garments with numbers denoting what technique was used for each part, and where to find it in the book. Isn’t that genius? Plus, all the patterns Christine used (both finished garments and for the photo tutorials) are from indie designers. No Big 4 to be found anywhere in this bad boy, yeeeah!

  2. Bryn Dineen March 13, 2014 at 8:26 am #

What technique – if i could master a single bleeding one of them I’d be a very happy bunny!

  3. Frau Leo March 13, 2014 at 8:26 am #

    This books looks amazing!
I’d love to learn how to use piping in garments as I’ve never tried it.

  4. Rebecca Sweeton March 13, 2014 at 8:26 am #

I’m just starting to sew, so I have a lot of skills I’d like to master! I guess top on my list would being able to make shirts for myself and my husband, so I guess that would involve setting sleeves and collars.

  5. Rachel March 13, 2014 at 8:27 am #

I would like to learn how to do bound buttonholes. Thanks for the opportunity!

  6. Liz March 13, 2014 at 8:29 am #

I’m not sure if it really counts as a technique, but one of my goals for 2014 is getting better at fitting garments. Also, fancy seam finishing! I have a tendency to use the exact wrong technique for my fabric 😦

  7. Jill March 13, 2014 at 8:36 am #

This book looks fantastic, just what I need! I’d love to master zips. At the moment, I tend to shy away from them. Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

  8. Grace March 13, 2014 at 8:37 am #

I would like to learn to put invisible zips in properly, I always get pulling at the bottom.

  9. Hélène March 13, 2014 at 8:37 am #

I still have to perfect my technique on invisible zippers. Thanks for presenting this book. It looks fantastic!

  10. Lisa D. March 13, 2014 at 8:38 am #

That book looks amazing! I would love to master buttonholes and invisible zips, among other things. Thanks for the giveaway!

  11. lenelein March 13, 2014 at 8:38 am #

I’m still no good in inserting a invisible zipper. I can sew corsets and sleeve, but invisible zippers give me the kreeps…

    Thanks for the generous giveaway!

  12. Fooniks March 13, 2014 at 8:39 am #

I wish I had something like this back in the day when I didn’t know squat about sewing techniques and eyeballed everything. It’s great to see books like this popping up and helping the beginners and even more experienced sewers. I have a book for home decor sewing and I plan to make little test swatches of everything that’s there. Just for the practice.
Recently I’ve been thinking that my collars could be better. I definitely want to be the master of collars(or master of the universe. Whichever comes first) 🙂

  13. Sara March 13, 2014 at 8:39 am #

I would like to master setting in a sleeve. I still find it tricky sometimes after many years of sewing.

Lovley book and I love that pattern!

  14. Vicki Kate March 13, 2014 at 8:40 am #

Oh, I am seriously crushing on this book! I’ve just made my first ever bound button hole and feeling pretty damn proud of myself. I’d love to make a really decent fly though and it looks like Christine’s book would have me tackling them with confidence.
Have an absolute blast in NY with Clare – can’t wait to see what you all get up to!

  15. vivthefish March 13, 2014 at 8:40 am #

This is really cool! I’ve only sewn small projects like pillow cases and bean bags before, so I guess the technique I’d like to master is really just learning how to construct a garment in general! Your blog is really inspirational and I want to try my hand at making clothes myself. 🙂

  16. Dana March 13, 2014 at 8:40 am #

I’m a very visual learner, so this would be great. I haven’t ever attempted sleeves because I’m too intimidated, so that would be good!

  17. designcloseup March 13, 2014 at 8:41 am #

This books looks fantastic. Collars and waistbands are areas I could certainly do with improving

  18. Kristin March 13, 2014 at 8:42 am #

I would like to master fitting. It is my goal this year 😀 Thanks!

  19. Leah March 13, 2014 at 8:43 am #

Wow this looks like an awesome book! I want to master fitting.

  20. Melissa S. March 13, 2014 at 8:43 am #

Oh man, I NEED this book. If I don’t win I’ll be buying it for sure. I feel like I’m intermediate-ish, or at least slightly above novice, and there are lots of more complicated techniques I’d like to learn. Sleeves and collars are my nemesis right now. Also working with silky fabrics.

  21. Youanna March 13, 2014 at 8:45 am #

I would love to master a fly front zipper. I am a beginner sewer, so I have lots to learn.

  22. Elizabeth McAlister March 13, 2014 at 8:45 am #

That DOES look extremely helpful. I would love a detailed, picture rich guide to inserting a fly. The only one I’ve done was sad.

  23. Michael Doepker March 13, 2014 at 8:45 am #

    Waistbands! Always befuddle me!

  24. Jo March 13, 2014 at 8:47 am #

This book would be so useful! I’d love to master fitting, especially so I can make the occasional gift for someone else… if they are very nice to me!

  25. Elizabeth March 13, 2014 at 8:47 am #

This looks like a terrific book! I am interested in learning more about adding darts for a better fit in dresses and blouses. Thank you!

  26. LSV March 13, 2014 at 8:49 am #

I have recently sewn 2 different pants patterns – one for myself and one for DH, 2 different ways, but this fly front looks like like another way again! Would love to see it! And the Emery dress as well? Wow!

  27. Sarah Boyd March 13, 2014 at 8:49 am #

I really want to master zips on trousers, I have finally got invisible zips but I want to make a fly front, would love to win this prize

  28. sewprettyinpink March 13, 2014 at 8:49 am #

I’d like to master zippers. I have no clue why they are my kryptonite!

  29. carlalissa March 13, 2014 at 8:51 am #

Oh what a wonderful giveaway Lauren…. Thank you Christine….I want to master self made bias…. I do not know why cant make it perfect!

  30. smonakey March 13, 2014 at 8:51 am #

There’s far more than one skill I’d like to master! Fitting, setting sleeves, hell, even getting my seams sewn straight!

  31. kristiellkay March 13, 2014 at 8:55 am #

I would use this book like a copy of The Watchtower. I try to convert everyone to sewing, so I’ll have more people to get excited about sewing with, and this is perfect for that shizz!

Also, I’d definitely be going over that whole zipper section before I head out to proselytize to my friends and family, ha! Looking forward to seeing your next fabric haul from NYC!!

  32. Erica March 13, 2014 at 8:55 am #

Lining garments. I don’t even know where to start! 🙂

  33. Chris March 13, 2014 at 8:55 am #

oooh! I would love this book –
    Thank you for the Giveaway.

  34. Karen Belote March 13, 2014 at 8:56 am #

I have been seeing for a long time, but still don’t feel comfortable inserting zippers into trousers. I would like to master this.

  35. Myriam G March 13, 2014 at 8:56 am #

Awesome book! If I could master anything, it would be….zippers! Attaching a neckband would be good too.

  36. June March 13, 2014 at 8:57 am #

Since I am a total newbie to sewing, with only 1 pajama bottom under my belt, I have a lot of mastering to do in every area. Yesterday I had tried my first buttonhole. Success, I think!

  37. Jennifer March 13, 2014 at 8:57 am #

I’m struggling with sewing a front fly right at this moment so – yeah – that tutorial would be VERY helpful! 😉

  38. Heather March 13, 2014 at 8:58 am #

I’m a beginner in the truest sense, and the thought of zippers terrifies me!

  39. Corinne Brophy Cammarata March 13, 2014 at 9:00 am #

zippers! I want to do zippers!!!

  40. gingermakes March 13, 2014 at 9:00 am #

What a fun giveaway! I’d like to master sewing cuff plackets- mine always look like absolute garbage!

  41. Nothy March 13, 2014 at 9:02 am #

I’d like to master bound buttonholes and welt pockets. What a great give-away.

  42. Kara March 13, 2014 at 9:02 am #

Collars are definitely something I shy away from and could use some quality explanation of. Then I might actually sew the Hawthorn up, which I was really excited about, until I started thinking about the collar.

  43. Catherine Siemann March 13, 2014 at 9:03 am #

I’m a newbie and will definitely be picking up this book — would love a chance to win it!

  44. Joey Hendricks March 13, 2014 at 9:03 am #

I want to learn to install zippers. And darts. I wanna learn darts.

  45. cristina March 13, 2014 at 9:04 am #

Hi Lauren, I would like to master button plackets with the buttonholes neatly made! Thanks for the giveaway!

  46. Ciara March 13, 2014 at 9:04 am #

Where to start? Improving the fitting , I guess

  47. Sam L. March 13, 2014 at 9:05 am #

I’m just starting to learn to sew, so I don’t know enough to know which techniques I will want to master. I guess zippers are a good start, but I also have dreams of making my own pants/shorts, so… whatever techniques I need for that?

  48. Teresa March 13, 2014 at 9:05 am #

My sleeve technique could probably be improved. Even when they go in with no tucks, I feel like there’s something that just isn’t right.

  49. sewlittletime March 13, 2014 at 9:05 am #

i’m in! fly front tutorial? yes please!

  50. NorseOtter March 13, 2014 at 9:08 am #

What a great giveaway! This book would be so useful to me in so many ways as I have yet to master most techniques, but my main preoccupation at the moment is fitting and darts (especially the FBA). PS I love to ‘lurk your closet’ for inspiration- you have great style.

  51. Becky March 13, 2014 at 9:08 am #

Fly zippers! I think that my Thurlow-fest earlier this year helped, but my goal is to master jeans-making, and a little more confidence on that would help.

  52. Jana March 13, 2014 at 9:09 am #

Gaaah, stop writing posts about this book already, everyone! It’s already at the top of my birthday wish list!
Buttonholes. Sigh. I dread buttonholes, but I want shirts. And shirt dresses. It’s starting to become a real problem. I need to conquer buttonholes!

  53. Lorna March 13, 2014 at 9:10 am #

I’m loving the blog tour. The book looks great. I would like to master trousers so a fly zip would be very helpful along with the fiddly looking flat felled seam!

  54. ekabby111 March 13, 2014 at 9:11 am #

Interestingly enough, I’ve got invisible zippers down…probably because I’m too cheap to take my clothes to someone else to fix them – so I’ve been replacing and repairing zippers for forever.

Now, I want to master a rolled hem.

  55. Melissa March 13, 2014 at 9:11 am #

I am so new to sewing that I would be using this book for every step! It looks like such a clear reference book that would be so useful. Thanks for the giveaway!

  56. macstabby March 13, 2014 at 9:12 am #

ME ME ME please. I’d love to learn to do front-fly (fly-front?) zips so I can make shorts and pants.

  57. Jenny March 13, 2014 at 9:13 am #

Yeah! I totally need to master non-invisible zippers… Visible zippers 😀

  58. Laura March 13, 2014 at 9:13 am #

I’ve seen nothing but great reviews about this book. I’m such a visual learner. I’d love to understand zippers a little more.

  59. Chasing Happiness (@slauditory) March 13, 2014 at 9:14 am #

I would like to master fitting, linings, and zippers! I want my stuff to not look a mess when it’s on me.

  60. Libby March 13, 2014 at 9:14 am #

I definitely qualify as a beginner and I’d love for this book to teach me about zippers!

  61. kitty cat stevens March 13, 2014 at 9:15 am #

you already know how new i am to sewing, so let’s start at the beginning: i’d love to master sewing knits and working with zippers! i have a lot to learn but one day i’ll make dress, just you wait 😛

  62. pattyskypants March 13, 2014 at 9:15 am #

Holy Kay-rap! I have sewing books from the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 90’s, but nothing from the 21st century. Makes sense that I should have something that demonstrates the use of MODERN notions and equipment.
P.S. Fly fronts are so easy. My favorite way to make trousers is a hidden button fly front. Try it!

  63. Nakisha March 13, 2014 at 9:15 am #

Ooooh. I’d have to say 1st would be welt pockets. I have like next to no fear in the sewing room but have been avoided welts. 2nd would be perfecting my blind hems by machine. I do alright, and they are functional but not perfect.

  64. Marie Bromage March 13, 2014 at 9:16 am #

Front fly zipper as I would love to try making trousers

  65. eggrah01 March 13, 2014 at 9:16 am #

Fly front zips and welt pockets! I’ve done both before, but not quite to my complete satisfaction yet.

  66. Amy March 13, 2014 at 9:17 am #

    The dreaded zip!

  67. craftygirl1001 March 13, 2014 at 9:18 am #

That looks like an awesome book! I hope it can teach me to how to fit clothes better and how to properly ease in a sleeve.

  68. Hanne March 13, 2014 at 9:18 am #

A sewing book this bright makes me smile! So does an Emery pattern. Great giveaway and thanks for hosting!

  69. carolinascallin March 13, 2014 at 9:19 am #

This looks like a terrific book! I’d love to learn how to handle different seam finishes so garments look more ‘polished’ and not ‘homemade’. Also buttonholes!

  70. Olivia March 13, 2014 at 9:20 am #

I need to master hand stitching! I just don’t do it enough….

  71. katecarpenterdesigns March 13, 2014 at 9:21 am #

There are so many things I need to master, but especially buttonholes! They give me all kinds of trouble, for some reason.

  72. SilverSpringWanderer March 13, 2014 at 9:21 am #

I would love to win this book!
I would like to master inserting a lining into pants and turning points in collars, etc.

  73. A Midsuburbanite's Dream March 13, 2014 at 9:22 am #

This looks fabulous! I would love to master setting sleeves. I always seem to make a mess of it when I try!

    • Paloma March 13, 2014 at 9:28 am #

This looks like a great book and I have lots to learn, but would love to learn more about lining.

  74. Jennifer March 13, 2014 at 9:24 am #

ooooh that fly zipper in the post is one i’d love to master. however im thinking my current skill-set is a little way off…

  75. Denise March 13, 2014 at 9:25 am #

I would love to be able to tackle front fly zippers without fear!

  76. Cassandra March 13, 2014 at 9:26 am #

Hmm. Where to start.. Fly insert! I made my hubs some bubbled-crotched jeans that are now only for yardwork. Pretty funny to see a man looking down confusedly at his zipper, tho.

  77. leannemacleod@yahoo.com March 13, 2014 at 9:26 am #

Zips! No matter how many times I seem to be shown I get really confused with zip insertion. I would so love to win the book as well as the Emery dress pattern. I’ve seen so many gorgeous versions popping up!

  78. Amber March 13, 2014 at 9:29 am #

Book look awesome! I’d really like to conquer zipper techniques!

  79. paige p @ lpd March 13, 2014 at 9:29 am #

I’d love to master a front fly zip.

    • traeumvommeer March 13, 2014 at 9:38 am #

Hey Lauren, this really is a great one! I’d be super excited to win this book, since I’m self-taught and could use some help on several techniques. Especially, I’d like to learn how to do princess seams.
Have a great time in NY and greetings from Germany!

  80. sammywheeler March 13, 2014 at 9:30 am #

I’d love to learn zipper techniques. Better ways to install them so they look cleaner and less awkward. This book looks amazing!

  81. Tabatha Tweedie March 13, 2014 at 9:30 am #

Fab giveaway! I would love to either learn to sew swimwear or trousers next! I’ve never tried either. The book looks brilliant.

  82. Sandra March 13, 2014 at 9:33 am #

I’d love to learn to insert a zipper without tears of frustration! Thanks!

  83. Stevie Nicole March 13, 2014 at 9:34 am #

Zippers are my enemy right now! I can’t even imagine a fly front!

  84. noho23 March 13, 2014 at 9:35 am #

Fit. I dream of garments that fit with darts that hug but don’t pucker or point. I want to know how to use a muslin after you finally get it to fit you. Do you pull it apart and use it? I’ve been sewing for over 40 years and still avoiding things that fit. Sigh. Help. PS: Rockin’ blog.

  85. traeumvommeer March 13, 2014 at 9:38 am #

Hey Lauren, this really is a great one! I’d be super excited to win this book, since I’m self-taught and could use some help on several techniques. Especially, I’d like to learn how to do princess seams.

  86. Jenni Lithgow March 13, 2014 at 9:38 am #

I’d love to be entered in the drawing! I’d like to master zippers. I do mostly historic sewing so haven’t a lot of experience with them, and always wonder if I do them “right.”

    Have a great trip!

  87. Michelle W March 13, 2014 at 9:39 am #

Front fly and bound button holes! Thanks for the giveaway!

  88. Rachel March 13, 2014 at 9:39 am #

I have yet to make a pretty looking front fly. Other zipper techniques don’t phase me, but my front fly usually looks like it came from a home ec class. If I could master that, I would be very happy.

  89. traeumvommeer March 13, 2014 at 9:40 am #

PS: Sorry about posting the comment twice, I messed up the spaces where you can reply^^

  90. I made it!! March 13, 2014 at 9:42 am #

Great book. I love books that have lots of colour photos to show you how!

  91. Mrs. D March 13, 2014 at 9:44 am #

What a sweet giveaway! I’d love to learn more about zipper techniques. I get the zippers in, but they definitely lack that finished look.

  92. Maria Rydqvist March 13, 2014 at 9:44 am #

Nice Lauren! This is a book I would love to have – and I have been sewing for a few years now. But, I have NEVER managed to sew a nice and beautiful sleeve cuff and placket. That would be my goal.

  93. Katie Williams March 13, 2014 at 9:45 am #

This looks fantastic! I would really like to master altering patterns to fit me. It’s something I’m quite scared of learning and could use a LOT of hand-holding in 🙂

  94. sewtigersew March 13, 2014 at 9:47 am #

How lovely of you both! I would be interested to see what section of the book brings me new “lightbulb” moments. I wouldn’t mind an enlightenment about invisible zippers–sometimes they pull, sometimes they don’t. Sigh.

  95. Ruth March 13, 2014 at 9:48 am #

I would like to master the fly front zipper. Tried it back on high school. Did a terrible job and have avoided them for 25 yrs. Thanks for this chance.

  96. Maja March 13, 2014 at 9:50 am #

The book looks great! Front fly zipper is definitely sth i need help with!

  97. Nicole March 13, 2014 at 9:53 am #

I really want to master knits, and common fitting alterations. I’m starting to think I have a weird back (either narrow or too erect or who knows), because I’m starting to see all kinds of weird wrinkles back there.

  98. kelly March 13, 2014 at 9:53 am #

I’d love to master sewing in a zipper. I can do it, but its not pretty.

  99. Becky March 13, 2014 at 9:57 am #

    Button Fly!

  100. Anna March 13, 2014 at 9:58 am #

Oh my! That fly front zipper tutorial sure looks like the real deal. I definitely need this book even if I don’t win the giveaway!

  101. Melanie March 13, 2014 at 9:58 am #

I would love to master zippers! Its surprising how difficult they can be.

  102. Masha March 13, 2014 at 9:58 am #

I still need some zipper help, and your review sounds like this book is a good place to get it.

  103. Brittany March 13, 2014 at 9:59 am #

I really need to learn how to line my skirts and dresses. Typically I take short cuts and it never works out.

  104. Vicki March 13, 2014 at 10:00 am #

Ooh, yes please! I have designs on making myself a pair of shorts this summer, so the how-to for a fly zipper would be a perfect start.

  105. The Lemming King March 13, 2014 at 10:02 am #

Any help on setting in sleeves, collars, or anything zipper related (especially the fly zipper) would be helpful. 🙂

  106. the Garment Farmer March 13, 2014 at 10:03 am #

Christine is a rock star! I’d love to see how she installs a fly zip and to master all zipper installs.

  107. twirldesigns March 13, 2014 at 10:05 am #

I always need more help setting in sleeves! And more info on zippers never hurt anyone!!!!

  108. Lauren- Old Red Boots March 13, 2014 at 10:07 am #

A ZIPPER! I fight with every zipper I try.

  109. Katelyn Caufield March 13, 2014 at 10:10 am #

Man, I’d love to be able to master an invisible zipper- or zippers in general!!

  110. Em March 13, 2014 at 10:12 am #

Zips, always. And also fit; I want to make trousers this year and it would be great to know that I’ll be able to sit down in them. Thanks for the giveaway!

  111. Liz March 13, 2014 at 10:13 am #

I need help with making a perfectly striaght row of buttonholes on the front of a shirt……and sewing zippers on the machine. Have been doing them by hand forever.

  112. laglov March 13, 2014 at 10:17 am #

The book looks awesome!! Thanks for hosting the giveaway. Two sewing techniques intimidate me big time: fly zippers and linings>

  113. mauude March 13, 2014 at 10:17 am #

I seriously don’t know how to sew a zipper on pants. I can look on pictures on the Internet, read instructions… Still, its never working! Maybe this book could help! Great giveaway 🙂

  114. Angela March 13, 2014 at 10:18 am #

Oh, I have this on my wish list… and now I want it more and more!

  115. Kim Johnson March 13, 2014 at 10:18 am #

It sounds like an amazing book. It would be the perfect resource for teaching beginners. I love your blog. I have been sewing for over forty years but it is always good to look at things from a different perspective.

  116. Kim Fisher March 13, 2014 at 10:19 am #

This looks like a great book to have in your library. Thanks for the chance to win it.

  117. Leslie R. March 13, 2014 at 10:21 am #

In a perfect world I would love to finally master fitting ~ like both of my grandmothers.

  118. Feminizzle March 13, 2014 at 10:21 am #

I hope there’s something on welt pockets! It’s one of those things that I’ve done and technically know how to do, but I always have to look at a refresher before starting. Her photo guides look perfect for that!

  119. Renee March 13, 2014 at 10:21 am #

I actually don’t own any sewing technique books, so this would be a great first one! Sometimes it would be nice to have some reassurance that I’m doing what I think I’m doing correctly. 🙂

  120. Catherine S March 13, 2014 at 10:21 am #

I’d love to improve on finishing seams 🙂

  121. laura March 13, 2014 at 10:23 am #

Yessss this book looks so great!! I need to learn some tips so that I can conquer pants!

  122. Emma Jayne March 13, 2014 at 10:24 am #

I would have said I’d like to master top-stitching before reading your post but now I’m thinking fly-zip could open up more trouser possibilities in my sewing future (previous trousers have used invisible hip zip and shorts required only buttons).

  123. Katy W March 13, 2014 at 10:24 am #

I REALLY want this book. I took a sneak peak, and it seems like it would be very useful for perfecting almost every technique. I’m stuck on fitting at the moment and could definitely use some help there. Thanks for the opportunity!

  124. Loren March 13, 2014 at 10:25 am #

This books looks awesome! I am somewhere in the ‘intermediate stage’ of sewing. I’m not scared to tackle most projects, but I’d love to learn to do thinks ‘correctly’ rather than just guessing or trial & error.

  125. Ann Wilson March 13, 2014 at 10:25 am #

Sounds like a great book! I would love to learn more about setting sleeves, fitting a garment better, invisible zippers… I am fairly new to sewing so I could go on and on…and on. Thanks for doing this!!!

  126. Suzanne March 13, 2014 at 10:26 am #

    Waistbands in trousers.

  127. Gjeometry March 13, 2014 at 10:28 am #

I would love to be able to master welt pockets! They look good on trousers, blazers, coats and tops, yet are a bit tricky! Have Fun in NYC with Clare, Lauren. Wish I was able to attend.

  128. Pam March 13, 2014 at 10:32 am #

Zippers!!! I can’t believe the lengths I go to, to avoid them!

  129. Treasa March 13, 2014 at 10:33 am #

I’d like to master front fly zipper. Thanks for the giveaway.

  130. alligatortoe March 13, 2014 at 10:33 am #

Oh wow, this would be such a cool prize to win! There are so many techniques I’d love to learn for fitting a garment to my shape and even just more techniques to master my sewing machine!! 🙂

  131. Jessica R March 13, 2014 at 10:34 am #

    French seams!

  132. vinthillvintage March 13, 2014 at 10:38 am #

This book looks amazing. I’d love to give it to my neighbor who is just starting out. I’ll probably buy it for her even if I don’t win. I’d like to dig deeper into that fly zipper part because fly zippers are the devil as far as I’m concered.

  133. J March 13, 2014 at 10:42 am #

Just one technique? 🙂 I need some help with sleeves and all kinds of zippers. I don’t know why I let them scare me.

  134. Karen MD March 13, 2014 at 10:43 am #

I would start with adding linings then see what else I could pick up regarding improving fit.

  135. karriesmith March 13, 2014 at 10:44 am #

I would love to master ANY technique I need to make cute dresses. I NEED this book! Thanks for the chance!

  136. Elizabeth Amy Hajek March 13, 2014 at 10:44 am #

I’ve never even tried a front fly zipper so that would be cool to learn.

  137. dressingtherole March 13, 2014 at 10:46 am #

Thanks for your tour of the book! Hmm, I’ve mentioned fly front zippers in a different giveaway for this book, but there are so many other techniques I want to learn as well! I would love to know more about working with delicate fabrics like charmeuse and chiffon, and also tips for how to match the fabric to the pattern (I’ve has several sewing fails recently due to poorly picked fabric!)

  138. bunny March 13, 2014 at 10:48 am #

Oooh…I’d love to figure out a full bust adjustment to fit my girls in something that’s NOT a knit! Thanks for the chance to win!

  139. Gwynne March 13, 2014 at 10:50 am #

I’d like to master zippers and buttonholes.

  140. Emmely March 13, 2014 at 10:51 am #

I am going to have to insert a fly zipper soon and it scares me a little bit, so clear pictures are definitely a great help!

  141. Funmi March 13, 2014 at 10:53 am #

I would like to master pattern/prints matching and working with knits.

  142. heather March 13, 2014 at 10:53 am #

i really need to learn how to set in sleeves. i only make sleeveless things because i’m so so crap at them.

  143. Kristina March 13, 2014 at 10:54 am #

This book looks so useful. I’m a sewing newb (just got my machine for Christmas) and my goal is to sew clothing by the end of the year. So considering that I don’t have any garment construction skills, I’d like to learn any of them!

  144. Sewing Princess (@sewingprincess1) March 13, 2014 at 10:55 am #

I’d love to learn more about linings

  145. mel March 13, 2014 at 10:56 am #

I’d love to get the hang of fly-front zippers. They make my head hurt.

  146. Danica March 13, 2014 at 10:57 am #

Goodness, what couldn’t I use some help with?! I would like to do a better job with sleeves, pants fitting, and modifying various types of darts for my SBAs.

  147. Grace March 13, 2014 at 10:59 am #

Me too on the zippers. Particularly the invisible ones. Eek.

  148. alessandra March 13, 2014 at 11:02 am #

Thanks for this opportunity! I really want to make pants for myself, so any technique that would enable that! Probably zippers without punching something is a top one! 😉

  149. Sandra Woerner March 13, 2014 at 11:03 am #

Yea, finally something for someone that has been out of the sewing fun for way too many years, As far as a technique to master, ALL OF THEM!!!! It has been so long I keep making mistakes and my sewing library is limited to the internet and any information I can get.

  150. nenewhis March 13, 2014 at 11:05 am #

This looks like a great addition to any sewists’ library! I would love to master making bound buttonholes, they freak me out every time!

  151. Diya March 13, 2014 at 11:06 am #

    Fly Fronts 🙂

  152. Norma March 13, 2014 at 11:06 am #

Fly zippers, sleeves and linings…oh, my!

  153. Ellen March 13, 2014 at 11:11 am #

Definitely front fly zippers and plackets.

  154. Sarah O March 13, 2014 at 11:14 am #

I’d like to sew sleeves better, and also finishing techniques, as my impatience rules and a fine finish is my nemesis.

  155. Rox Guillemette March 13, 2014 at 11:17 am #

Awesome contest! I’d like to master getting a better fit!

  156. Beth B. March 13, 2014 at 11:21 am #

You can shorten a zipper? 😉

  157. Big Red March 13, 2014 at 11:21 am #

Inserting ALL OF THE ZIPPERS! Woooo!

  158. Tammy March 13, 2014 at 11:22 am #

That’s easy. Button holes…I just hope it doesn’t require a newer sewing machine!

  159. Paige March 13, 2014 at 11:22 am #

This is so fun! I’m sadly lacking in my ability to match waist seams on invisible zippers. I’m pretty good all around the rest of the garment. Then I put in this zipper and YIKES. 1/2″ difference!

  160. Sheri March 13, 2014 at 11:24 am #

Fitting! I am 5′, short-waisted, slopey shouldered with a rack which makes it very hard to fit!

  161. HoopesParkStudios March 13, 2014 at 11:25 am #

Id like to work on sleeve techniques, and rolled hems on my sewing machine. Neat book!
    Claire

  162. Flor de Lima March 13, 2014 at 11:27 am #

There are so many techniques I would love to master… I’m still learning! 🙂

  163. Veronica C. March 13, 2014 at 11:27 am #

I really need to hone in on my zipper skills. Thanks guys!

  164. JokeG. March 13, 2014 at 11:28 am #

I also love sewing books, especially the ones with sewing techniques. There are so many techniques that I need to get the hang of. Especially techniques which I do not know about … The technique I now want to get the hang of it is adding boning

  165. sarogreen March 13, 2014 at 11:31 am #

I’ve been afraid to tackle buttons and zippers, so I would try those first!

  166. Kim Haber March 13, 2014 at 11:33 am #

I would like to improve my fitting skills.

  167. Trinity March 13, 2014 at 11:33 am #

I am getting into the finer details of sewing a garment now that I have got the basics down. I think the finishing touches are the key to a beautiful piece! I would love to understand how to install my zippers so that look more professional and don’t snag on the fabric so much. Plus, I’ve never even attempted a fly front zipper, but that is an awesome thing to know!

  168. sullivan1970 March 13, 2014 at 11:33 am #

    Invisible zippers for me!

  169. Anne Marie March 13, 2014 at 11:34 am #

Oh gosh – there are SO MANY techniques I’ve yet to master! Sleeves, button holes, piping, zippers….

  170. Nina March 13, 2014 at 11:34 am #

Zippers! I always get this wonky little ‘bump’ at the bottom. Also hand-finishing things inside the garment and on hems.

  171. Little Leys March 13, 2014 at 11:35 am #

Oooh, looks fab. I really need to master setting in sleeves – I keep cheating and doing a little pleat 🙂

  172. AD March 13, 2014 at 11:36 am #

I’d love to master any of those fancy finishing techniques like bound button holes, French seams, etc.

  173. MsDarling March 13, 2014 at 11:39 am #

I’m just at the beginning of learning to sew, so there is more than one technique I need to master, but if I had to choose one, it would be buttonholes. I’m not doing anything so complicated yet that learning something as basic as that wouldn’t still be helpful. Or maybe collars, I’ve successfully screwed up one of those before 🙂

Looks like a fantastic book based on your recommendation and the reviews on Amazon.

  174. johanna@projects by me March 13, 2014 at 11:40 am #

I’d like to learn how to make nice cuffs and plackets!

  175. Ines March 13, 2014 at 11:42 am #

I love it and I want I one!

  176. Cari March 13, 2014 at 11:43 am #

This is awesome. I feel like there are a lot of general things I really need to learn, fabric choice, sources, needles, that stuff.

  177. Mirela March 13, 2014 at 11:48 am #

Zippers! I’m still scared of them because they never manage to turn out right!

  178. hugsandcusses March 13, 2014 at 11:49 am #

This book looks fab! I am forever wondering the how|what|where|why of the top of my zips. Those two, extended pieces of twill tape that anchor the zip sides . . . I just . . . They won’t . . . Gah!

  179. Andrea March 13, 2014 at 11:50 am #

I’m fairly new to sewing. I have a shirt nearly complete but buttons and buttonholes are terrifying to me. Oh and FBAs which when I get around to more fitted patterns I will surely need.

  180. Anonymous March 13, 2014 at 11:51 am #

I’ve been making clothes all my life but still consider myself a bit of novice, so this book would be great.

  181. meloniestanton March 13, 2014 at 11:53 am #

Zippers! I can’t wait to get my hands on this book for the zipper section! I need some new pants but am still terrified of fly front zippers. Thanks for the giveaway 🙂

  182. Ash P March 13, 2014 at 11:57 am #

I would love to master zippers! I never feel like they go in right 😦

  183. Olivia March 13, 2014 at 12:04 pm #

Christina is so clever! This is a great looking book. Even though I wouldn’t say I’m a beginner I am self taught so some ‘beginner’ techniques are not so polished. I completely avoid buttonholes because I have NO IDEA how I’d make one on my unsophisticated machine.

  184. Lisa March 13, 2014 at 12:05 pm #

Looks like a great book. I would love to learn more on making collars and cuffs + how to adjust a pattern so it fits perfectly.
    http://www.creagirl.com

  185. Anonymous March 13, 2014 at 12:05 pm #

I’m not a beginning sewer by any means, but I too, love books like this. They are so good for reference, and as a teaching tool as well. The technique I’d love to master is elastic shirring. I’m eager to see Christine’s tutorial!

  186. Jen March 13, 2014 at 12:07 pm #

How amazing! This looks like the Holy Grail of sewing books. Either bound button holes or fitting a liniing without it poking out at all the wrong places (are there any right places…) for me.

  187. Theresa March 13, 2014 at 12:08 pm #

Oh yes!!! I am a new sewer and need all the guidance I can get!! I have a big caboose and always have a hard time with pants fitting proportionately to my waist! I love books with pictures too!

  188. Sharon L March 13, 2014 at 12:11 pm #

I’m just getting back into garment construction after about a 25 year hiatus. This seems like it would make the perfect “jump back into it” book! I would love to learn all the new tricks and tips and shortcuts.

  189. sarah March 13, 2014 at 12:12 pm #

I really need to master rolled hems!

  190. Francesca March 13, 2014 at 12:14 pm #

This is the coolest book ever! I am a beginner, trying to teach myself how to sew, so every help with any technique is greatly appreciated. If I have to name one, I’ll go with darts: they are still a mystery to me!

  191. Jess Z March 13, 2014 at 12:14 pm #

I would like to master zippers. I can’t get them by machine so I hand pick all of them.

  192. All Set March 13, 2014 at 12:16 pm #

Woh, what a beautiful book! I would like to take my chance and find out if the book provides sewing techniques according to my sewing course…

  193. Natalia March 13, 2014 at 12:17 pm #

I would like to master collars – stands, roll line, the whole shebang. Not just attaching one following a pattern, but drafting perfect collars from scratch.

  194. Sandra March 13, 2014 at 12:21 pm #

Plackets are on my to-learn list next I think. But in generall I want to just get better in fitting and drafting 🙂

  195. Katie March 13, 2014 at 12:22 pm #

Pick what I’d like to master…hmm, since I’m a total clothing beginner unless you count a skirt I made in Home Ec back in ’88, I’d like to get some hand holding on making pants.

  196. Carol G March 13, 2014 at 12:22 pm #

Your pics are amazing and have made me want this book even more.

  197. blancapate March 13, 2014 at 12:24 pm #

Ooh that fly front zipper technique looks really helpful!! I think other than that, I’d love to learn more about sleeves and hemming – two areas in which I could use a little step-by-step photo help. 🙂 Thanks for the opportunity!! (and I’m dyyying to make the Emery dress after seeing your version!).

  198. Hannah March 13, 2014 at 12:24 pm #

    ZIPS. All kinds of zips.

  199. Jessey March 13, 2014 at 12:27 pm #

I’m so excited to read about this book! As someone who has yet to take the tape off her Christmas present sewing machine, it sounds like I really need it, even if I don’t win the give-away.

  200. Ashley March 13, 2014 at 12:34 pm #

The front fly zip looks especially tempting. I’ve yet to make something needing it but I’d love to try!

  201. melissa March 13, 2014 at 12:36 pm #

I would love to master setting in sleeves and just improving my overall skills.

  202. Emily March 13, 2014 at 12:37 pm #

I want to master the fly-front zipper and make a perfectly gathered skirt. And maybe try some fancy seam finishes? I usually just serge everything, but it might be fun to mix it up.

  203. Naheema March 13, 2014 at 12:37 pm #

A few things, but maybe start off with neatly lining skirts and dresses, matching printed fabric for dresses, and fabric draping – all in time for summer!! (lol)

  204. Clem March 13, 2014 at 12:41 pm #

Yay, thank you for the chance to win ! I’d like to master fitting.

  205. girlfightwin March 13, 2014 at 12:42 pm #

I would like to master invisible zippers! I would also like to win! 🙂 KTHNXBYE!

  206. PendleStitches March 13, 2014 at 12:49 pm #

This book is totally swoonworthy! My goal is to elevate the finish on seams and hems so garments look really professionally finished.

  207. Lisa S March 13, 2014 at 12:50 pm #

Looks like a wonderful book! I’m always looking for help on fitting issues.

  208. Icy March 13, 2014 at 12:51 pm #

Need to work on mastering the art of fitting.

  209. Karina Reid March 13, 2014 at 12:52 pm #

I’d like to master the fly-front zip so I can make myself some pants stat! 🙂

  210. Virginia March 13, 2014 at 1:01 pm #

I’d like to master sewing a shirt dress copied from an existing dress I have. Thx! 🙂

  211. Michelle Fuller March 13, 2014 at 1:01 pm #

I would love to master any kind of zipper, all my zipper inserts suck! And I want that dress!

  212. Angelina Loretto March 13, 2014 at 1:06 pm #

I NEED that book! I’d love to make a bunch of pants, and zip flies(flys?) scare me to death. Thanks for the opportunity!
    Angelina

I horde sewing books like crazy, and this book has already sneaked its way on to my wishlist.
I’d like to master set in sleeves, I never seem to get them right.

  214. Andrea March 13, 2014 at 1:07 pm #

Voile and similarly devilish fabric are the bane of my existence.

  215. JillyL March 13, 2014 at 1:11 pm #

oh I would love to just go through and re-assess everything I do. I learned to sew when I was a kid and I have a feeling there are some techniques I could hone

  216. Blue Sunday March 13, 2014 at 1:17 pm #

Oh, how I would love to have this book! There are so many techniques that I need help with. This would be the perfect reference guide for me!

  217. Laura March 13, 2014 at 1:18 pm #

What a great-looking book (and that pattern is on my to-buy list, too!) I desperately need to perfect my buttonhole skills! 🙂

  218. Sue March 13, 2014 at 1:21 pm #

ooh! I’m a big fan of Christine’s and a signed copy of her book would be AMAZING. 😀

  219. Sarah C March 13, 2014 at 1:24 pm #

Invisible zips and sleeves (there are only so many kimono sleeves patterns out there) oh and button holes.

  220. Amy Clark March 13, 2014 at 1:25 pm #

Fitting – any and all fitting. Secondarily: sleeves. I just did finally read a book for zipper help rather than trying to decipher the zipper package and it was amazing how much better it was (doh fo’ sho’) I’d had the book for ages….anyway – this book looks fabulous, as does the Emery and I’d love to win it.

  221. Lady Stitcher March 13, 2014 at 1:26 pm #

Great prize! 🙂 After (another) dodgy zip insertion episode recently, I’d have to say that invisible zippers are the one thing I would love to master!

  222. teri dodds March 13, 2014 at 1:29 pm #

Zippers, it’s always zippers that give me trouble. Thanks for the giveaway!!

  223. Cecillia March 13, 2014 at 1:30 pm #

I would definitely like to master zips! Looks like such a great book!!!

  225. Janine March 13, 2014 at 1:34 pm #

I would love to master beautiful finishing techniques, to make clothes I will cherish and keep forever -instead the endless wear-once clothes I seem to buy!

Love your blog, by the way.

  226. Janey March 13, 2014 at 1:38 pm #

How to do a SBA and insert perfect zips. One of my aims this year is to learn more about my body shape and how to fit better. I have a weird body shape! 😦

  227. Amy Clegg (@acesmcgee) March 13, 2014 at 1:39 pm #

I would love to master zippers and finishing techniques – I feel like the clothes I’ve made have had way too much of a homespun feel.

Great giveaway! even if I don’t win I know I’ll grab this book!!

  228. Thalia March 13, 2014 at 1:45 pm #

Way cool! Some very valid points! I appreciate you penning this write-up and thee rest

  229. Jen March 13, 2014 at 1:47 pm #

I need to stop being so scared of linings so any info in the book on that would be great!

  230. uglybeat March 13, 2014 at 1:47 pm #

I would love to learn how to make buttonholes that don’t look wonky (like a monkey made them). That would be grand. Thanks for the opportunity—looks like a fab book!

Yay, thanks for the chance to win! The last zipper I tried to insert was pretty pitiful, so I’d definitely like to master that technique (annnd try a copy of the pretty Emery dress!). 🙂

  233. Cris Acosta March 13, 2014 at 1:53 pm #

I’ve never lined a garment before, so that’s something I’d like to learn more about. I’d also like to master better fitting… Fingers crossed I get it 🙂

  234. rste00d March 13, 2014 at 2:04 pm #

I’d like to master better fitting in general, but the thing I’d most like to learn is how to bone a bodice…

  235. Tam March 13, 2014 at 2:08 pm #

Oh, how generous of both you and Christine. I am not a good sewer, my main issues are fit, seam/zipper alignment and lining. Thank you for both for offering this to all of us.

  236. Heather March 13, 2014 at 2:10 pm #

This book is EVERYWHERE and I want it! I want t master finishing techniques.

  237. Kelly March 13, 2014 at 2:14 pm #

I’d like to learn invisible zips and bound buttonholes. Plus, I LOVE sewing books.

  238. awfully nice March 13, 2014 at 2:16 pm #

There probably a lot of techniques to want to master… but since I’m mostly self-taught, I kinda just want to learn the right way to sew!

  239. Kristin Saunders March 13, 2014 at 2:20 pm #

My seams always look like a mess…I’d love to master finishing them. And linings! Ugh. And fitting. Wait..is that too many???

  240. Rodelinda March 13, 2014 at 2:20 pm #

Book looks fantastic – what a great giveaway!

  241. Blu Jay March 13, 2014 at 2:25 pm #

I would love to get this book to help me teach my daughter how to do sleeves and zippers. This book looks great!!! If I don’t win it I must buy it 🙂

  242. Ellen March 13, 2014 at 2:28 pm #

Wow, that looks amazing! I’d love to learn how to set in sleeves properly, I keep having trouble with that. I’m in!

  243. verna March 13, 2014 at 2:30 pm #

    invisable zippers!

  244. nx44 March 13, 2014 at 2:30 pm #

I need help with fitting and attaching sleeves. I always spend so long trying to get it right but I’ve not had a lot of success. Have fun on holiday!

  245. Iryna B. March 13, 2014 at 2:30 pm #

Thank you for the chance! I love to have helpful books in my library. I am returning sewist and need all the tips and tricks that out-there to help me.

  246. Nadine March 13, 2014 at 2:30 pm #

I, like so many others, want to master the invisible zipper. (I’m also really insecure about my hemming skills.)

  247. Madalyn L March 13, 2014 at 2:32 pm #

I need to master zippers! I’m a beginner so I still have so much to learn and am having a great time learning.

  248. Libby H March 13, 2014 at 2:42 pm #

I am terrified of making pants, but really really want to start. The front fly cope techniques would be helpful for taking the leap!

P.S. As a beginner at sewing, I have learned crazy amounts from YOU. I am so grateful for the wealth of information you take the time to share. Come to California! We’ll hang out.

  249. Rachel Mercado March 13, 2014 at 2:43 pm #

I would like to master setting collars so I can sew up some shirts for my hubby

  250. Zeddie March 13, 2014 at 2:53 pm #

I would like to master zippers, particularly invisible zippers in dresses and front fly zippers.

  251. Hillary March 13, 2014 at 2:56 pm #

I need to learn how to put in a zip fly!

  252. Katie Kingsley (@KatieKingsley1) March 13, 2014 at 3:04 pm #

Great giveaway! I would really love to figure out button plackets, that’s my next challenge. And I love your blog!!! =) x

  253. Katie March 13, 2014 at 3:07 pm #

I’d love to learn about pants, I’ve got a pattern that mocks my total chickenness at even opening the envelope.

  254. Alessa Farbenfreude March 13, 2014 at 3:12 pm #

Wow, fly fronts seem to be a very popular choice as a technique to master. I really want to sew some Moss skirts this spring, so that’s my technique of choice, too!

  255. Jacqueline March 13, 2014 at 3:20 pm #

I want to master linings. They never seem to hang correctly until I’ve practically butchered them.

  256. Aubrey March 13, 2014 at 3:21 pm #

You know I just have this mental block when it comes to zippers. I need that book! 🙂

  257. Jacqui Dew March 13, 2014 at 3:28 pm #

I would love to get better at zipper insertion – instead of doing each one at least 3 times until I get it right 😉 the good news is my unpicking skills are AWESOME!!!

  258. Aleksandra @ Liveaboard Takes the Suburbs March 13, 2014 at 3:31 pm #

I’d like to master zippers. I have a deep and abiding love for invisible zippers. So much so that I’ve rarely inserted any other type. I’d love to get better at them, but invisibles are just so convenient! >.<

  259. Colesworth March 13, 2014 at 3:36 pm #

I need to look at the front fly zipper insertion!

  260. TinaLou March 13, 2014 at 3:40 pm #

Have fun in the City (jealous!) I’d like to eliminate my fear of the welt pocket

  261. Rachal March 13, 2014 at 3:40 pm #

I think this book looks great. Photos are so much clearer than diagrams. I need to work on adjusting/ fitting and improve my buttonholes

  262. Marianne Grant March 13, 2014 at 3:45 pm #

Even though I have about 40 years of sewing experience, I am still learning, which is one of the most exciting things about sewing. Even better, I am teaching my daughter to sew and would love to share this book with her. This year’s big sewing challenge – sewing my daughter’s wedding dress – yikes!!!!!

  263. Kerri-Ann Gray March 13, 2014 at 3:49 pm #

I’d love to get really good at buttonholes! Then maybe I could give the Ceylon a go, amongst others in my pile of yet to be attempted patterns.

  264. Helen March 13, 2014 at 3:49 pm #

Definitely welt pockets. I have no idea where to start. Oh, and lapped zips that actual lap. That would be good. The book looks fab.

  265. Nikki March 13, 2014 at 3:50 pm #

Zippers! I avoid them like the plague and would love to get over my fear!

  266. Hannah March 13, 2014 at 3:58 pm #

There are so many techniques I’d like to master, but zippers probably top the list. That book looks great.

  267. Crystal March 13, 2014 at 4:00 pm #

The fly zip I need to do it!! Thanks sad I couldn’t meet up in NYC ! Maybe next time….

  268. jeanine March 13, 2014 at 4:04 pm #

looks great! I really want to master zippers

  269. Shelley March 13, 2014 at 4:06 pm #

I need to be more precise. I need to explore different methods of marking fabric. Book looks fab.

  270. redfyre March 13, 2014 at 4:08 pm #

Welt pockets are my particular bête noire!

  271. buntyw March 13, 2014 at 4:08 pm #

This looks a great book – I’d like to master hems!

    • Anonymous March 13, 2014 at 4:14 pm #

So many comments! Mastering the fitting is my primary goal.

  272. ellebougies March 13, 2014 at 4:11 pm #

I’m such a total newbie I need every technique – I am absolutely this book’s target audience!

  273. Alli March 13, 2014 at 4:11 pm #

Ooh, I want to learn to sew a front fly zipper, too!

  274. Hannah March 13, 2014 at 4:12 pm #

I’d like to perfect a lot of techniques, but getting perfect zips would make me very happy 🙂

    Hannah

  275. onedabbles March 13, 2014 at 4:16 pm #

I need to learn lots of things but I’d like to master bias finishing for neck, sleeves and hems for really neat finishing – to do an every day thing very well. It looks an excellent book.

  276. LanaLottie March 13, 2014 at 4:34 pm #

Setting in sleeves is what I want to learn about!

  277. throughfairyhalls March 13, 2014 at 4:34 pm #

This is amazing!!! Zippers, generally, are definitely something I’d like to get better at- even though I’ve been making clothes for myself for 10+ years, zipper insertion fills me with such anxiety that I either sub buttons or attach it by hand, which isn’t terrible but really leaves me at a disadvantage, pant-sewing wise.

  278. Katarina March 13, 2014 at 4:36 pm #

I’d like to master invisible zipper techniques.

  279. essian March 13, 2014 at 4:39 pm #

Right now I’d love to master using a rotary cutter without catching it on a pin, table edge etc and trashing the blade. Clumsiness is getting expensive!

  280. Beth March 13, 2014 at 4:45 pm #

I still need to master the zip!! I can make them work, but never achieve the beautiful professional finish I see bloggers doing!

  281. Knitmo March 13, 2014 at 4:48 pm #

I would like to master the fitting process for my body, and tailoring a coat to fit me perfectly.

  282. Kelly March 13, 2014 at 4:49 pm #

I’d love to master (I say master, I mean try), the fly front zip – I’ve been a bit scared to try it so far but I have some garments I want to make with them in, so that tutorial would probably be enough to kick start me!

  283. Helen March 13, 2014 at 4:49 pm #

I would love to learn how to set in sleeves!

  284. Molly March 13, 2014 at 4:58 pm #

Sewing with knits is something I am hoping to master this year! Thanks 🙂

  285. redambition March 13, 2014 at 5:06 pm #

Thanks for the giveaway! The next technique on my list is to get comfortable sewing with knits! I think that getting that skill will open up my sewing to make more everyday garments.

  286. Nerissa March 13, 2014 at 5:07 pm #

I’m terrified of button holes. I need to figure those things out.

  287. VictoriaR March 13, 2014 at 5:08 pm #

I would love to master front fly zippers. The book looks great.

  288. Nissa March 13, 2014 at 5:08 pm #

So many! Sewing with different fabrics, what those different fabrics are/mean, underlining, lining, piping, lapped zip, different pocket types, piping, bias binding, the list goes on!

  289. c March 13, 2014 at 5:10 pm #

I learned to sew in jr. high school home ec, and from my mom…. back in the 70’s. I sewed then because it was cheaper than buying clothes. Nowadays, that can’t be the motivation to sew. Your blog was the first sewing blog I’ve stumbled into, and it has inspired me to begin to sew with the purpose of well made clothes, and I would like to contribute to my daughters’ wardrobe with well made classic pieces. I am sure this book would be an excellent refresher for many areas that I have allowed to grow lax or never learned properly.

  290. Yvonne March 13, 2014 at 5:15 pm #

As I am a beginner, I would love to win this book, because there’s a lot to learn for me! I would probably start with invisible zippers, because my next sewing project needs one! Thanks for this opportunity!

  291. Mads (lifeinamadshouse) March 13, 2014 at 5:23 pm #

How cool! I’d love to win, duh. =) The technique I’d like to master is inserting a zipper–I am not at all good at them, apart from hand-picked. I’d like to figure them out so mine look more RTW on things like skirts/pants.

  292. Wendy March 13, 2014 at 5:24 pm #

I would love the chance to win this wonderful book. I am always looking for ways to improve my seam finishing, and linings.

  293. Meg March 13, 2014 at 5:29 pm #

The technique I would most like to learn is all of them! Specifically I am still afraid of zippers so anything to do with adding and sewing zippers would be my top technique I want to master.

  294. Elizabeth March 13, 2014 at 5:33 pm #

Ohhh, I want this book so bad. I’m sure I could improve in so many areas with this by my side!

  295. Hannah March 13, 2014 at 5:37 pm #

I would love to win this book, and learn more about professional garment finishing techniques!

  296. Adrienne March 13, 2014 at 5:37 pm #

The fly front zipper tutorial would be a big help with one of my summer sewing projects!

  297. Michelle March 13, 2014 at 5:44 pm #

I’d like to master the lapper zipper construction. I have tons of regular zippers at home, but can only do an invisible zipper. Haha, seems to be the opposite for many sewing bloggers.

  298. Talitha Blandin March 13, 2014 at 5:51 pm #

I would like to master fly front zip, bias binding, setting sleeves and collar, sewing wiith knits and fitting!!! I just love the book!

  299. Lucy March 13, 2014 at 5:58 pm #

I’d like to master other kinds of zips apart from invisible ones. I’m really good at those, but I suck at pretty much the rest of them – and it’s devastating to do a great job on an entire project, only to scream at the eleventh hour with a wonky zip insertion. (My sewing machine has learned a lot of Very Bad Words, at least 50% due to zips.)

  300. Katherine March 13, 2014 at 5:58 pm #

One-hundred-percent need to master stitching in the ditch! Still have to work out a few problems with invisible zippers too, but I think that’s down to having one of those adjustable plastic ones, ugh, such a pain!

  301. Lana March 13, 2014 at 5:58 pm #

Oh man, I want the HELL out of this. I’m a beginner sewer and I just want to master zippers at this point. >_>

  302. ashley March 13, 2014 at 6:05 pm #

I would like to learn more about sewing zippers.

  303. Anneh March 13, 2014 at 6:10 pm #

Oh goody, a book, a book, a book! Being new, I need help with nearly everything:) But next up is invisible zips. Thanks for the giveaway!

  304. Carole March 13, 2014 at 6:23 pm #

I’d love help with all kinds of zippers.

  305. Mellissa March 13, 2014 at 6:23 pm #

Just LOVE me a sewing book! I’d like to get on top of invisible zips once and for all.

  306. youngseamstress March 13, 2014 at 6:25 pm #

I’d like to learn how to insert a fly front zipper! Thanks for the giveaway!

  307. Honora March 13, 2014 at 6:26 pm #

I really really need to master a damn waistband. Pitiful, I know.

  308. Erika Honey March 13, 2014 at 6:26 pm #

This books looks beautiful! Finishing garments properly would be what I would like to learn about most. I tend to press the seem and be done with it, glob forbid anyone looks at the inside of my cloths!

  309. clara March 13, 2014 at 6:29 pm #

    Just one thing to master?!
Well, for sure, setting my sleeves in without getting gathers.

  310. marleneliebenberg March 13, 2014 at 6:40 pm #

Buttonholes, sleeves and strech-fabric is going to be the end of me!! I would love to have this tutor beside me in the middle of the night when I’ll battling those guys!!
    Beautifully done!!

  311. Annie Na March 13, 2014 at 6:49 pm #

I am a lurker of your blog, which I really enjoy. I’d like to learn how to use a muslin to get a good fit — how to pin up, what to look for, what to do to correct a fit problem, etc. Thanks.

  312. Neeno - Sew Me Love March 13, 2014 at 6:54 pm #

Buttons! I’d like to master buttons. I have never done a button hole, too scared!! And it’s holding me back from sewing some really nice patterns 😦

  313. margaretannegibb March 13, 2014 at 6:56 pm #

Invisible zipper installation would be great!

  314. Katie March 13, 2014 at 7:00 pm #

I want to master setting in a sleeve.

  315. Siobhan March 13, 2014 at 7:03 pm #

I’d really like to master more industry techniques, for faster and more consistent results.

  316. Nikki Thomas March 13, 2014 at 7:05 pm #

I feel like I will never know enough about doing zippers. Every time I think I have it figured out . . .I figure out that I don’t!

  317. jennettex March 13, 2014 at 7:07 pm #

    Princess seams!

  318. Whitney Luckenbill March 13, 2014 at 7:14 pm #

  320. drtherese March 13, 2014 at 7:44 pm #

I want to put in better pockets

  321. Carmel March 13, 2014 at 7:46 pm #

I would love to refine my zipper techniques for sure. I would also love some tips on how to do neater buttonholes! Mine are always such a mess 😦

  322. Cheryl March 13, 2014 at 7:48 pm #

The perfect fly..I need to master that for sure!

  323. Jill March 13, 2014 at 7:49 pm #

What a beautiful book! I would love to master hidden zippers…

  324. Jess March 13, 2014 at 7:53 pm #

The perfect sewing companion! I’d love to master set in sleeves, and then get two on the same garment to match!

  325. LM March 13, 2014 at 7:57 pm #

Gathering is my kyptonite – I would really love to master it! I have such a hard time getting the gathers evenly distributed and even after basting, I still end up redoing sections.

  326. Teresa March 13, 2014 at 7:59 pm #

Zippers-without a bump! I can only dream! The book looks awesome.

  327. Lynda March 13, 2014 at 8:01 pm #

I’d like to master invisible zips without puckering and so they are invisible!

  328. Caroline March 13, 2014 at 8:10 pm #

Buttonholes, buttonholes, buttonholes… I made three shirts recently which turned out great but they all need buttonholes. I’d love to be able to make the perfect buttonhole x 18!

  329. Kate March 13, 2014 at 8:12 pm #

Collars and Cuffs – I’d love them to be able to make them perfectly and without all the swearing as I make them.

  330. mysteries1984 March 13, 2014 at 8:15 pm #

I;m only just starting out, so I need to learn all the things. But first on my list (and according to my ‘sewing pile’ (hah!) is invisible zippers.

  331. Vanessa March 13, 2014 at 8:18 pm #

I would love to put in a sleeve placket without botching it (or leaving the whole area sticky with fusible tape residue).

  332. Veronica March 13, 2014 at 8:20 pm #

Invisible zippers would be the first thing for me.

  333. Myra Pastuch March 13, 2014 at 8:29 pm #

Bound buttonholes and welt pockets. I think I want to attempt a jacket this winter with some bound buttonholes.

  334. tatimaio March 13, 2014 at 8:42 pm #

Fly front zippers for sure… Thanks for the giveway!!!

  335. Laura March 13, 2014 at 8:45 pm #

This is so awesome! I’m still a novice, so I’d love to master the invisible zipper (especially because I’m planning on putting them in at least 3 near-future dresses!)

  336. Stephanie Ayala March 13, 2014 at 8:51 pm #

I would like to master inserting zippers and altering a garment 🙂 Thanks for doing a giveaway!

I would love to win this book. I think it looks amazing! There are a few techniques I’d like to master but I would really like to be able to fit pants properly and make them look great. Thanks so much for the giveaway. You guys are awesome.

  339. Joy March 13, 2014 at 9:08 pm #

  342. showandtellmeg March 13, 2014 at 9:31 pm #

I really want to get better at fitting – doesn’t everyone? Lol

  343. Shelley C March 13, 2014 at 9:47 pm #

I definitely want to improve my tailoring skills, I always seem to end up with a gapey neckline, or worse, the dreaded lower back gape! But zippers have always been my achilles heel, so probably that one first….

  344. Lisa Eck March 13, 2014 at 10:01 pm #

I want to master sleeve cuff and placket. This book would help me a lot ☺

  345. Pamela H. March 13, 2014 at 10:09 pm #

Yes, interested in a copy – I think this book would fill a gap in my sewing book library. Thank you!

  346. Aida March 13, 2014 at 10:18 pm #

I have sooo much to learn because I am a total beginner, but different ways of sewing zippers to garments would be great 🙂

  347. Toni March 13, 2014 at 10:27 pm #

I feel like I have knowledge about pretty much all sewing techniques, but I’m not truly good at any one of them. I finally successfully installed an invisible zipper; there’s one down. Many, many, more to go.

  348. Madelaine March 13, 2014 at 10:29 pm #

Looks like a great resource! I’d really love to perfect neck facings. Mine are usually pretty wonky….

  349. Melina March 13, 2014 at 10:32 pm #

Oh man. Just one? I’m still definitely a novice sewer, so I have loads to learn. I have avoided all sleeved garments because setting in sleeves seems super scary, so I guess I’ll have to pick that as the technique I most need help with.

  350. Debra Hewitt March 13, 2014 at 10:35 pm #

I would love to win this! I would like to learn how to sew welt pockets.

  351. Erin March 13, 2014 at 10:42 pm #

    Zippers and buttons!

  352. Sam March 13, 2014 at 10:46 pm #

I have so many things to learn as I’m definitely still a beginner; but the first technique on top of my head at the moment is SBA, whether it’s a simple bodice, or bodice with princess seam, or raglan sleeve… Thank you I really hope I will win 🙂

  353. Jami March 13, 2014 at 10:48 pm #

    This book looks awesome.

Among many things, I’d love to master fit. I’m sure there’s a ton of things I don’t even know that I don’t know!

  354. Angie H March 13, 2014 at 10:49 pm #

I have so many issues with fit and finishing. I would like to address fit first though. I have a strangely shaped body that is changing through weight loss and it’s hard to fit right now.

  355. Ruth D March 13, 2014 at 10:50 pm #

I would like to master slacks. Two tries, two disasters.

  356. Jessica March 13, 2014 at 11:37 pm #

Just one? I can list about a million different techniques I wish I could do better…but ummm..main one would be FLY ZIPS!!

  357. Kate March 13, 2014 at 11:49 pm #

Invisible zippers are still my arch enemy so I need help with that! The book looks fantastic.

  358. Jess B March 13, 2014 at 11:52 pm #

I think we’d all like a better handle on zippers, since they’re a bit fiddly. I know I would!

  359. Eleanor March 14, 2014 at 12:15 am #

    Collars and zippers definitely!

  360. Ronniie March 14, 2014 at 12:32 am #

I would love to master pattern matching, I shy away from patterned fabric that needs it as I find the idea intimidating.

  361. Karen March 14, 2014 at 1:06 am #

    The perfect fit

  362. Anita M March 14, 2014 at 1:11 am #

After about 16 years of sewing, it’s probably time to learn how to put in an invisible zip 😉

being a beginner sewer…anything and everything!

  364. Nancy March 14, 2014 at 1:15 am #

I’ve been sewing since I was 12 (many, MANY years ago), but fly front zippers, ooo, tney scare me. Current husband would sure like me to try making pants for him but so far I’ve been selfish.

Next time I’m in Nashville (it could happen, been there once) I wanna meet you!

  365. Jame March 14, 2014 at 1:28 am #

More years of sewing than I want to count and fly fronts, even false ones still give me colliewobbles. HELP!!

  367. Kath March 14, 2014 at 1:51 am #

Aah, zippers, my nemesis, those frustrating endless source of broken needles!

  368. Quattre March 14, 2014 at 2:03 am #

I’m IN! And I’d really really like to master invisible zips (but REALLY invisible!)

  369. Britta March 14, 2014 at 2:15 am #

This book is great!…. shorting zippers is what frustrates me…very often!!!

  370. Alison Bragg March 14, 2014 at 2:17 am #

As I want to sew more for my kids and myself i would like to perfect setting in sleeves and sewing with knits, so scary! Lol

  371. SewDucky March 14, 2014 at 3:02 am #

I need to master fly fronts, but I am entering this for a girl I teach to sew. I am SURE this would sometimes be easier for her then my own books (and well, me).

  372. Megan March 14, 2014 at 3:02 am #

    zips… definitely zips

  373. Maria March 14, 2014 at 3:07 am #

I’m just starting to sew so I need to master just about everything, but I guess first thing would probably be setting in sleeves

  374. Rachel B March 14, 2014 at 3:19 am #

Sewing an invisible zipper that doesn’t look home made would be awesome.

  375. 1107nikki March 14, 2014 at 3:21 am #

So many techniques to try to master, but fitting darts properly and also a fly zip I reckon are at the top of my list. As for the Emery Dress, it is just so cute. I really must get the pattern!

  376. Meriwether March 14, 2014 at 3:22 am #

    Bound buttonholes, hands down!

  377. Nicola March 14, 2014 at 3:23 am #

I’ve not sewed since school (erm… 15 years ago! Yeesh!) but I came across your blog a few months back, I love reading it and looking at the pictures and now I want to sew some of that good sh!t like you do! So I guess technique no.1: where do I start; tech. 2: how to make an awesome wedding dress! Über-ambitious? Hmmm…could be, but can I have a go at it?! 🙂

  378. Ashley March 14, 2014 at 3:39 am #

I’d like to master pants making. Eeek! Thanks for the giveaway!

  379. Lynn Potts March 14, 2014 at 3:53 am #

Zips. Always zips. Mine are usually pretty bad 😦

  380. Stephanie March 14, 2014 at 4:02 am #

I would like to know more about fitting issues and learn more about sewing with knits. Awesome giveaway by the way!

  381. Anne in Japan March 14, 2014 at 4:02 am #

Invisible zips… must do this soon! Great giveaway!

  382. sara March 14, 2014 at 4:26 am #

If there was way to do gathering, that had all your gathers spaced beautifully and that wasn’t a pain to do, that would be wonderful!

  383. Louise March 14, 2014 at 4:51 am #

Thank you for the giveaway! I consider myself as a beginner sewer, and so I need to master many techniques, this book would be perfect for me mastering all sewing techniques.

  384. Julie March 14, 2014 at 4:55 am #

What a nice book! It really looks awesome and I have soooo much to learn haha

  385. Hari March 14, 2014 at 5:02 am #

OMG yes please!! My dream book and sewing pattern!! A perfect dress that fits and my own personal seamstress mentor in bookform. Sigh. I’m on a mission to perfect all techniques and as a self taught beginner who muddles her right and left and can’t cut in a straight line I’ve got a fair way to go. All assistance gratefully accepted!

  386. Amanda Crawford March 14, 2014 at 5:17 am #

Yes please! Techniques? Hmmm…. too many to list, but gathering sleeves springs to mind.

  387. linynp March 14, 2014 at 5:36 am #

Ok that is a book I’ll need!! Thanks for reviewing! Have fun in NYC! Wish I could join!

  388. imopriv March 14, 2014 at 5:36 am #

Amazing giveaway! Invisible zips… Totally. And a zip fly.

  389. Rachelle March 14, 2014 at 5:43 am #

This book looks like just what I need! I am really new to sewing and I would like to perfect hong kong seam finishing and the invisible zip!

  390. Nicki March 14, 2014 at 5:48 am #

Collars and facings please 😊, seriously need to improve those.

  391. asterixette March 14, 2014 at 5:55 am #

So many techniques I need to master. A good start would probably be invisible zips that are actually really invisible!

  392. beklet March 14, 2014 at 5:55 am #

I’d like to master a few, but the one that eludes me generally is fitting my very own dowager hump/muscular back….and jetted pockets…..I’n not so good at them….

  393. Agnieszka March 14, 2014 at 6:03 am #

I would love, love, love to master technic of inserting zippers, all kind zippers. Hopefully I could win the book and finally learn how to do that!

  394. Lou March 14, 2014 at 6:25 am #

I’d love to learn how to do welt pockets and bound buttonholes, and my zipper techniques need some work – they look sloppy and I can never get the top to line up!!

  395. Kathleen March 14, 2014 at 6:30 am #

Pants. Anything to help with pants.

  396. Vivien March 14, 2014 at 6:45 am #

I would love improve my seam finishing.

  397. Genevieve March 14, 2014 at 6:51 am #

    Hello Lauren,
I am a newbie at sewing clothes – very much inspired by your blog :), so my learning curve is fairly steep. I would love to be better at setting sleeves.
    Thank you.

  398. Sherri Egan March 14, 2014 at 6:55 am #

I would love to learn more about fitting so my clothing have a more professional finish and fit me perfectly!

  399. Bobbi March 14, 2014 at 7:06 am #

What a great book and giveaway. I would love to master linings – I’m so confused!

  400. Teresa March 14, 2014 at 7:29 am #

I’m trying to master sleeve caps right now – they are driving me crazy.

  401. Nadine March 14, 2014 at 7:47 am #

Would like to master the zippers, all of them 🙂

  402. Karen U March 14, 2014 at 8:18 am #

I would really like to be so comfortable inserting zippers that I don’t break out in a cold sweat when choosing a pattern to sew. Thanks!

  403. Tammy R March 14, 2014 at 8:23 am #

I’ve been looking at this book. Thanks for the chance to win a copy. I have trouble with bindings. I would like them to be neater and flatter.

  404. Bec March 14, 2014 at 8:24 am #

Buttonholes! I hate them and the idea that I could be just about to ruin an otherwise good garment by using them! I hardly ever sew anything that needs buttonholes and if I can use another fastening I do. Man, I need to get the hang of it I’ve been sewing, like, FOREVER!

  405. Olga March 14, 2014 at 8:25 am #

The book looks wonderful! I want to master sleeves. I’ve tried different techniques, but still don’t get consistent results every time.

  406. Lorna March 14, 2014 at 8:27 am #

FBA – fit’s a nightmare for me. I’m an odd shape – narrow shoulders and hips, full bust and only an inch difference between the width of my hips and waist. I’m a beginner, and I’m finding it hard to make all the right adjustments to a pattern. Thanks for the chance to win! xx

  407. mertxelasierra March 14, 2014 at 8:33 am #

Hello! First of all congratulations for all the readers you have, gosh, more than 400 comments, WOW!!! You must feel proud, girl!
Then, I would like to master… draping. Maybe next year I will focuss on that, because for this 2014, I am learning on sewing leather garments and making patterns (that IS a wonderful hability, maaaan!). I think it is wonderful to have things to learn, it makes us ALIVE, to be always on the learning, don’t you think so???
Lots of kisses to you all, coleague-sewists!!!

  408. lecsmiscellany March 14, 2014 at 8:33 am #

Thanks, Lauren, loved the review and the giveaway! There are so many techniques I’d like to master, but I think I’d have to pick fitting. Bust and shoulder alterations are still a big mystery to me…

  409. Tasha March 14, 2014 at 9:08 am #

Pockets! EVERY TYPE. there are so many options 🙂

  410. Kerry March 14, 2014 at 9:32 am #

My 8-year-old daughter and I are just learning how to sew. We need to master all the techniques – this book would certainly help! Thank you!

  411. Victoria L March 14, 2014 at 9:38 am #

Having been restricted to Hand sewing & knitting since leaving Home Ec classes years ago I’m in need of mastering all machine sewing techniques but one of the first I’ll be trying to master will probably be darts. I’m due to take possession of my Granny’s sewing machine in the next few weeks so Christine’s book will be much needed, I’m defiantly buying it with my next pay check if I don’t win a giveaway first.

  412. Victoria March 14, 2014 at 9:44 am #

I’d love to master zippers. I always get to that part of a garment and cringe. They just never seem to go in smoothly for me. Fingers crossed!

  413. CJ March 14, 2014 at 9:46 am #

Very excited for this book. I NEED to get a hang of sewing buttonholes. Any type. They’re just one of those things I can’t get a handle on. I avoid garments I would otherwise give a go at.

  414. Erika March 14, 2014 at 9:47 am #

This is an easy question: I’d like to be the perfect collar queen! I do confess I have to practice more 🙂

  415. Milan March 14, 2014 at 9:48 am #

Hi there, I want to master the technique of making an SBA, as there are loads of tutorials for SBAs, but we small busted gals are being widely ignored and it still pains me to fumble around with my own attempts to come to a nice result. Thanks for the chance 🙂
    Milan

  416. Christine March 14, 2014 at 10:05 am #

I am still a beginner and there are loads I still have to master, but the thought of sewing a zipper brings me out in a cold sweat! This book would be the perfect sewing companion. Thanks for the giveaway.

  417. Pootle and Make March 14, 2014 at 10:11 am #

Great giveaway. At the moment I can only do concealed zips. I would like to learn how to do a lapped zip without ending up with an uneven waistband.

  418. Maria March 14, 2014 at 10:12 am #

As a self taught sewer – I’m constantly learning – there is so much i don’t know until i stumble on it! I’d like to learn about piping and binding – i love the idea of giving a contrast edge to garments – to make it look more professional!

  419. little d March 14, 2014 at 10:14 am #

I would love to (re-)master everything. Just getting back to sewing after working too many hours! BTW-love the Singer sewing series! I aspire to sew that accurately & neatly.

  420. Julie March 14, 2014 at 10:20 am #

Zippers. Friggin’ zippers. They get me everytime!

  421. eva lo March 14, 2014 at 10:29 am #

I need master on front fly zipper, and as you said, it is explained on the book, so I need it!
    thanks

  422. Karen March 14, 2014 at 10:29 am #

Buttons, buttons, buttons…other stuff too, but buttons.

  423. MelodyJ March 14, 2014 at 10:34 am #

    I want to learn tailoring.

  424. Edie March 14, 2014 at 10:45 am #

O-o-o-h, pictures. As a beginner who’s a visual learner, this book sounds like a cure for hours of frustration and seam ripping. Knits, zippers, collars, packets, I tackle all with trepidation and held breath, hoping for the best and falling far short of the mark.

  425. Tasha March 14, 2014 at 10:57 am #

Like many others I’m so new I have loads of things to learn. I’m currently most intimidated by setting in sleeves, button holes, & zippers.

  426. Jess March 14, 2014 at 11:06 am #

I’d like to master the bias binding finish! Even if I use a ready made binding you can guarantee I’ll have screwed up either the stitching, or the amount to turn over somewhere (usually several places!) And if i try and make my own…well let’s just not got there!

  427. Dreaming of Avonlea March 14, 2014 at 11:36 am #

I would love to be able to sew better with chiffon – stop changing shape!! x

  428. Hayley Moore March 14, 2014 at 11:49 am #

I really need to master the technique of finishing off the waistband at the top of the zip without it being wonky or not getting the hook and bar correct as have too much or too little material overlapping.

  429. Barbara J March 14, 2014 at 11:49 am #

Wow, this book looks perfect for those of us trying to tighten up our sewing techniques. I sure could use that fly front zip tute.

  430. Levone March 14, 2014 at 12:08 pm #

I would love to master doing buttonholes and zippers. I’ve done variations of both, but clam up at the thought of starting and read the instructions like my life depends on them.

  431. Katharina March 14, 2014 at 12:20 pm #

I try to learn something new every time I make a new garment… I’m still somewhat fighting with piping, maybe someday I’ll get the hang of it.
Oh, and for the giveaway: Here! Me, me, me! 😉

  432. lifeisjustduckie March 14, 2014 at 12:21 pm #

I would love to master all zippers,, and buttonholes…so fasteners of any kind actually. This book looks wonderful, so bright and easy to understand!

  433. Ruth March 14, 2014 at 12:36 pm #

I could do with some more tips on setting in sleeves – mine always turn out OK, but I know they could be better!

  434. hyer March 14, 2014 at 12:42 pm #

I would love to have my hand held while I’m trying to put in a fly front zipper

  435. KellyBrown March 14, 2014 at 12:42 pm #

ERHMAHGAD! Zippers! Need to master sippers!

  436. auraoriano March 14, 2014 at 12:52 pm #

    Fitting! Zippers! Awesome giveaway!

  437. Roseyo March 14, 2014 at 1:06 pm #

Looks like a great book. I would love to be able to alter and fit patterns with confidence, (instead of blind optimism).

  438. Anca C March 14, 2014 at 1:07 pm #

I would love to learn how to do the zip fly

  439. grtescp March 14, 2014 at 1:20 pm #

this book looks great – I’d love to be able to give it to a friend I have been teaching to sew to help her continue on her sewing journey (after I have had a peek myself of course!)

  440. Annabelle March 14, 2014 at 1:56 pm #

I’m not sure if the book addresses this, but achieving a perfect fit is something I would like to master. Sometimes when I make a muslin, I know the fit is “off”, but I don’t know how to correct it. If this book covered that, I would love it.

  441. Valentina March 14, 2014 at 2:10 pm #

Hi everyone, I follow this blog from Italy and I love it. I would like to learn how to line a jacket properly. Valentina

  442. Ana March 14, 2014 at 2:24 pm #

Zippers! Front-fly zippers specifically give me serious anxiety.

  443. Sheena March 14, 2014 at 2:38 pm #

I would love to master putting in an invisible zipper. It would mean that I could start making skirts and dresses!

(I;m a new sewer and a ‘fraidy cat)

  444. Helene March 14, 2014 at 2:42 pm #

I’d love to learn up on seam finishes, and make an Emery as pretty inside as out!

  445. LeeAnn March 14, 2014 at 2:47 pm #

I really need to master putting in the fly zipper!! Pick me 🙂 🙂

  446. Katja March 14, 2014 at 2:51 pm #

It’s the front fly zipper… It scared me nearly to death the last time I tried and I have to get better at it. Maybe with a little help from Christine??

  447. claudia March 14, 2014 at 2:58 pm #

I’d love to master bound buttonholes. And one way or another, looking forward to making an emery.

  448. Kelley March 14, 2014 at 2:59 pm #

Either way – I am getting this book but oh boy, I hope I win. Like everyone else a front fly zipper but also welted pockets. I’d like to use both on a grey twill skirt for spring.

  449. Land girl March 14, 2014 at 3:33 pm #

Well I am not a beginner but I have never done bound button holes, and I would love help with lining stuff properly.

  450. Paola March 14, 2014 at 4:13 pm #

I definitly have to improve my flat felled seams, especially the round ones in shirts. Thanks for the chance!

  451. Christine March 14, 2014 at 4:15 pm #

I’d really love to find out what topstitching is. I’ve never been able to figure it out, no matter how many definitions I read. Maybe this will be able to show me. I’m sure it’s really simple too.

  452. Sarah March 14, 2014 at 4:25 pm #

Fab book! Fly fronts and welts are thus far my sewing nemeses. Fingers crossed I vanquish them.

  453. micki March 14, 2014 at 4:26 pm #

I’d like to learn how to read and lay out a clothing pattern correctly, and how to do sleeves and zippers, and how to sew curves better, and darts and matching plaids, and stripes, and how to do collars and cuffs and shirring and ruffles, and etc etc etc 🙂

  454. Katerina March 14, 2014 at 5:04 pm #

Sleeves and collars are the skills I need to improve!

  455. Leelalee March 14, 2014 at 5:25 pm #

Sweet! Thanks for the opportunity, I’m still such a beginner, so really all skills need mastering but I really need help with FBA.

  456. Helen Fox March 14, 2014 at 5:29 pm #

I really want to master easing, the very thought of it fills me with dread and as a result I am avoiding sleeves like the plague! This book looks really great for beginners and not so beginners too.

  457. Siobhan Andrews March 14, 2014 at 5:38 pm #

Mastering a lapped zipper is on my list. Looks like a gorgeous book to learn from. Cheers Siobhan

  461. emily March 14, 2014 at 8:35 pm #

All of it —really the finishing parts, but starting to learn

  462. AmandaK@whatthebobbin.com March 14, 2014 at 8:37 pm #

I’m a newbie to apparel sewing so I need to learn to hem. I’ve just tried a couple and they weren’t great. Thanks!

  463. Lynn March 14, 2014 at 9:07 pm #

This sounds like a great book for learning everything and that’s kinda what I feel that I need to learn! I still struggle with zippers so great instructions would be great.
    lbuckman@gmail.com

  464. swoodsonsays March 14, 2014 at 9:12 pm #

    I’d love to master alterations!

  465. Tina March 14, 2014 at 10:21 pm #

That book looks like any beginners dream! Seeing as I am still a super beginner, I’d want to master ANY technique! I want this book, even if I don’t win it!

  466. julieourcheznous March 14, 2014 at 10:28 pm #

I would love to master basic techniques, so that I can expand on those 🙂

  467. Sara B March 15, 2014 at 12:09 am #

I would love to master zippers and setting in sleeves! No matter how many years I’ve been sewing (I don’t even want to say because my lack of progression is embarassing) those two techniques STILL elude me. So excited about this book!

  468. Desedera March 15, 2014 at 12:55 am #

This looks like a wonderful book! I really like the fly zipper excerpt you posted. I would really like to learn good lining techniques.

  469. cariemay March 15, 2014 at 1:58 am #

Well apart from learning to warp the space time continuum so I’ve got more time to sew, I’d also like to learn how to do flat felled seams!

  470. Stacey Williams March 15, 2014 at 2:03 am #

Welt pockets! And bound buttonholes since I will need to do both on the cape I’m making. Looks like a great guide to sewing 🙂

  471. Stacey March 15, 2014 at 2:14 am #

As a new sexist, I have so much to master, but fitting seems the hardest! Thanks for the give-away!

  472. Claire March 15, 2014 at 3:20 am #

I love the look of this book. I’ve been sewing for a year now but still haven’t mastered zips or getting the perfect fit. Thanks for hosting this fab giveaway!

  473. Kathryn March 15, 2014 at 4:33 am #

This book looks great! I’d love to master a front fly technique – I’ve never tried it yet as it looks scary but I’d love to. Thanks for the giveaway Lauren & have a fab time in NY!

  474. Lila March 15, 2014 at 5:07 am #

This book looks really user-friendly, and so, I’m sure, super helpful for a beginner sewist like me. I would love my garments to have clean finishing right off the bat, so any tips on different seaming and when to do what would be wonderful!

  475. powell2317 March 15, 2014 at 5:09 am #

I’m still pretty new to my overlocker – so want to master it! Plus I’d like to do neater buttonholes & zips!

  476. Josephine March 15, 2014 at 5:10 am #

I would love to master invisible zips and learn how to do bound button holes. I don’t always have a strong internet connection at my dining table (where I do all my sewing), so a clearly written book would be an excellent substitute to online tutorials.

  477. Whitney March 15, 2014 at 6:06 am #

I would love to master the fly front zip and the invisible zips. The book looks so through!

  478. rebecca March 15, 2014 at 6:17 am #

Oh man, the fly front still manages to get the better of me. This book looks amazing! Would love to win!

  479. Felicia March 15, 2014 at 6:30 am #

  480. Trine March 15, 2014 at 6:38 am #

    Zippers – most definitely zippers!
Oh, and I would love to try the Emery dress pattern!

  481. jasmine1485 March 15, 2014 at 7:47 am #

I’d really like to improve my collar/neckline skills, mine are pretty dodgy!

  482. Natalie March 15, 2014 at 8:35 am #

i would love to know how to do facings, and pretty much anything to do with necklines and armholes, because at the moment i’m not feeling confident about any of that (nor are any of those attempts leaving the house at any time!)

  483. thephoebs March 15, 2014 at 8:39 am #

I want to learn how to sew and fit pants. The front fly seems so intimidating! Thanks for this great giveaway!

  487. Catherine from Canada March 15, 2014 at 10:12 am #

Can you recommend a book with photo tutorials for pattern adjustments? I’d like to have them all in one place.
    Thanks
    Catherine

  488. unglamstar March 15, 2014 at 1:17 pm #

This book looks amazing! I am new to sewing and am currently working on my first garment (a tshirt!), so I need to master all the techniques! But especially using patterns and fitting!

  489. hannlib March 15, 2014 at 3:08 pm #

I would like to master dressmaking. The whole shebang. Seriously, I am such a beginner that I don’t even know what I need to know.

  490. Le Papillon March 15, 2014 at 3:57 pm #

Fingers crossed ! Thanks for this great give away !

  491. Carrie March 15, 2014 at 4:24 pm #

Mastering the art of knowing when to deviate from a pattern with my own learned techniques. Love the page with garments listing techniques used. That would be great learning!!

  492. Colonel Hazard March 15, 2014 at 4:40 pm #

Really loving this blog tour, and so excited for the book. I hope it will help me learn how to make better darts, as my previous attempts haven’t been great…

  493. Eliza March 15, 2014 at 4:55 pm #

Oh, where do I start??? I would love to learn to properly fit a pair of trousers so I could actually wear them (yes, I have tried and failed more than once!). I also have a fear of sewing knits. Not sure why except that, as a quilter, the stretch makes me really nervous!

  494. payday March 15, 2014 at 5:28 pm #

I all the time used to read post in news papers but now as I am a user of internet thus from now I am using net for articles or reviews, thanks to
    web.

  495. Cathy Fowler March 15, 2014 at 5:41 pm #

Pants scare me. I think they would be less scary knowing how to do a fly front zip.

  496. Geo PGep March 15, 2014 at 5:45 pm #

I’ve never sewn a lapped zipper, even though I love how they look.

  497. Kitti March 15, 2014 at 5:52 pm #

Yeyy! I’ve just singed up to Cristie’s Sassy Librarian blouse Craftsy course. Whoop whoop. I am such a novice so the “I wish I knew this technique …” list is about a mile long. The first thing I would like to know though is, how to best trace my patterns.

  498. Susan March 15, 2014 at 6:00 pm #

    I’d love this book–guaranteed!

  499. Hazel March 15, 2014 at 6:13 pm #

Amazing giveaway! I’d love to master my handsewing/finishing techniques, I always kind of get lazy and give up!

  500. Julie March 15, 2014 at 6:32 pm #

I would love to get a few tips on sewing decent buttonholes. My always turn out a bit flimsy and sad! Love the photos- I’m a visual learner! 🙂

  501. SimpleFibreLife (@SimpleFibreLife) March 15, 2014 at 7:00 pm #

This book looks so great. What a fantastic giveaway. I’d like to master the magic of easing sleeves.

  502. Anonymous March 15, 2014 at 7:05 pm #

Love the pictures! I would like to learn how to line a garment.

  503. sewcharleston March 15, 2014 at 7:18 pm #

I want to learn some tricks for sewing with knits!

  504. craftsanctuary March 15, 2014 at 7:37 pm #

Awesome giveaway! I’d love to win!

  505. Holly March 15, 2014 at 7:48 pm #

I really want to learn to insert zips properly, I just can’t seem to get the hang of it.

  506. Bianca March 15, 2014 at 8:11 pm #

I would love to master “actually following the instructions”. This book looks to me to be a great way to actually getting to know how to construct my own clothes properly and with pictures! Not the wonky diagrams you get almost every pattern but actual photo’s ! Just mastering to finish reading and thén start working on it would be brilliant.*

*And if that doesn’t qualify: I would like to master how adjust patterns and find out how to get things to fit. And a way of hemming things that is hopefully hassle-free and fairly quick (since it took me 12 hours on my last dress…)

  507. Christina March 15, 2014 at 8:45 pm #

I’d love to master fly front pants. I get that I need a dress form to master draping and tailoring, but srsly- I mostly wear pants. I’d like to be able to make a pair that doesn’t suck.

  508. Sarah March 15, 2014 at 8:54 pm #

Seeing as I just spent the last 6 hours attempting to (for the first time) a successful FBA, I’d much enjoy mastering that! Excited to check out this book!

  509. Liv March 15, 2014 at 9:51 pm #

I would love to to make collars with best-ever points

  510. Joanne March 15, 2014 at 9:51 pm #

I would love to master fitting my shoulders/arms. They’re nice arms, but we all like it best when they can move where thy want!

  511. Mary March 15, 2014 at 9:59 pm #

This looks amazing! I was recently almost defeated by an invisible zipper, but I’d most like to work on linings and on hemming!

  512. Trisha M March 15, 2014 at 10:09 pm #

Neat book! I could really benefit from learning to sew in zippers.

  513. Anne Ominous (@rustoleumlove) March 15, 2014 at 10:25 pm #

    This book looks awesome!

  514. Ashley March 15, 2014 at 10:35 pm #

I’ve never had basic sewing lessons, so I think I could really benefit from this book. I tend to get stuck with the instructions that come with the patterns and then I just sorta make stuff up to get it done…so, I think this book could help me out. Oh, and I would love to learn to alter patterns to get a better fit.

  515. Nicole D March 15, 2014 at 11:04 pm #

Invisible zipper! I know everyone says they’re super easy, but they supet intimidate me. 😛

  516. Patricia March 15, 2014 at 11:13 pm #

I’m still a super-duper beginner, so almost any technique is one that I have yet to master. That being said, I haven’t tried buttonholes yet, so I’d love to have a good tutorial for them! Thanks! 🙂

  517. Alex March 15, 2014 at 11:28 pm #

I’d love to learn how to insert a fly front zipper so I can finally attempt to sew pants.

  518. Candis March 16, 2014 at 12:03 am #

I am interested in perfecting neck bands in bodices. I am excited about this new book!

  519. Tara March 16, 2014 at 1:33 am #

I’d like to master invisible zippers! I just can’t get those little buggers to look neat…

  520. Fwaire March 16, 2014 at 3:58 am #

I still need to master measurements. I always mess up and something gets a little wonky, or I haven’t quite measured the fit right and then i’m not really sure how to fix it. I do also need to improve on my more basic techniques.

  521. jojococonut March 16, 2014 at 4:13 am #

Oh gosh… Everything! But a priority list would include invisible zips (my last attempt ended up as a ‘fully on show’ zip), what I’m meant to do with fitting to account for my really small back versus ample bust, and to sew a pair of trousers (pants) as I have never tried and the thought induces pure terror!

  522. Nadine March 16, 2014 at 4:29 am #

I would love to be able to put zips in trousers, so I can make tons of cute shorts! And invisible ones. I’ve never tried them, but they look amazing.

  523. Eliza March 16, 2014 at 4:52 am #

Invisible zips, but I’m sure I could use the entire book! I would also love the pattern.

  524. Mirela March 16, 2014 at 5:22 am #

Hey! I would love to have that book… and I would love to learn how to sew shirts. 🙂 Since I have just started sewing I would probably use all the tips and tricks I can get.

  525. Melody March 16, 2014 at 6:37 am #

Sleeves! Just everything about sleeves, proper fit, ease, or just how to put them in without them looking AWFUL would be nice!

  526. Beth March 16, 2014 at 6:39 am #

I would want to master buttonholes next. Followed by a million other things! Thanks for the giveaway!

  527. Samantha March 16, 2014 at 7:16 am #

i want to learn how to properly install a front fly zipper. mine always look a bit wonky 🙂

  528. melissaspooner22@gmail.com March 16, 2014 at 7:20 am #

I would really like to master fitting and alterations…the book looks fabulous

  529. Eliza March 16, 2014 at 7:21 am #

What a great giveaway! Despite my best efforts, my zipper installations need help. I would love some step-by-step help.

  530. eileen March 16, 2014 at 7:39 am #

Zippers with a waistband- would love to improve that area. Thanks!

  531. Carol S March 16, 2014 at 8:02 am #

I’d love to tackle a fly zipper, but I won’t be putting one in our matching dresses.
It was a blast fabric shopping with you.

  532. Patricia March 16, 2014 at 9:29 am #

I’ve so much to learn! I tend to avoid lining where possible, I shy away from pattern matching…..I’ve not attempted pants yet. The book would come in very handy

  533. Sox March 16, 2014 at 10:22 am #

I really need to master welt pockets. Actually, maybe I should try one first. Maybe they aren’t as hard as they seem.
Thank you for hosting such a generous giveaway.

  534. Kristin March 16, 2014 at 10:49 am #

That looks great! I could use some help with setting in sleeves.

  535. Anne March 16, 2014 at 12:41 pm #

As a beginner, there are a lot of techniques I haven’t even tried yet far less mastered! Fitting is a big issue for me, so I’ll go for setting in sleeves. I really have to add buttonholes and decent seam finishing. Plackets, collars etc I’ll leave for the moment!

  536. Elizabeth March 16, 2014 at 2:10 pm #

I would love to master front fly zips and welt pockets!

  537. Helena March 16, 2014 at 2:10 pm #

The technique I’m currently struggling with, even earlier today, I was setting in sleeves and couldn’t get it right. So I need to learn that!

  538. Emily Bowie March 16, 2014 at 2:59 pm #

SLEEVES! I want to master them so badly! Most of the things I make are sleeveless for this reason alone…
I also want this book just as badly! I tried to order it a few weeks ago and it was sold out 😥 Here’s hoping! Thanks for hosting!!

  539. seamsoddlouise March 16, 2014 at 3:19 pm #

Hemming is my nemesis, need to master that. Would LOVE to win.

  540. Shanni March 16, 2014 at 4:01 pm #

I’d like to conquer my irrational fear of buttonholes. I’ve done them successfully many times, but they still scare me! Thanks for the chance to win 🙂

  541. Cindy Gillis March 16, 2014 at 7:43 pm #

Any technique that would help me with zippers!!

  542. Maureen March 16, 2014 at 8:55 pm #

What an awesome giveaway! I would love to learn tricks for sewing slickery, and thin fabrics, and to improve my fitting skills! Thanks 🙂

  543. chris powell March 16, 2014 at 9:21 pm #

Love this!! I need to get better at zippers! I always use the same method.

  544. Zerlina Van Sickle March 16, 2014 at 9:58 pm #

This book looks so neat! I would love to master princess seams!

  545. Ronja March 16, 2014 at 11:02 pm #

  546. Liz March 17, 2014 at 12:32 am #

I would love to master sleeves! Thanks for the giveaway!

  547. Rebecca March 17, 2014 at 1:58 am #

I realy need to learn how to sew zippers by machine, I can sew a hand-picked zipper but when it comes to machine sewing I’m totaly lost.

  548. Rhea March 17, 2014 at 4:05 am #

    Hi,

That looks like a fantastic book!

I’d like to master French seams and invisible zippers – they never seem to turn out right.

    Thank! 🙂

  549. Wendy March 17, 2014 at 4:28 am #

I would love a copy of this book
I am so envious of your Mood fabrics – I visited there in January and thought I had found heaven on earth!!
    Wendy

  550. Alexa March 17, 2014 at 4:51 am #

Wow, what an amazing giveaway. I still really need some help with zippers so that section would be really helpful.

  551. Kate Irvine March 17, 2014 at 7:06 am #

Neat and even gathers – that’s my downfall! And machine sewn zips, lapped zips, and some neat seam finishes.

  552. Jo Heath March 17, 2014 at 7:43 am #

ZIPS!! I’m avoiding them like the plague!

  553. Nicole March 17, 2014 at 8:02 am #

Looks like a great book 🙂 I’ve only just started sewing my own clothes (first t-shirt almost done!) so I’ve got a lot to learn! But above all, I’d love to feel confident about tackling zips, so that I can start trying to make skirts and trousers one day.

  554. Joyce in NC March 17, 2014 at 9:40 am #

For me, fitting is an ongoing item that I feel I have to master. Please enter me for the drawing.

  555. Leigh March 17, 2014 at 10:08 am #

After reading “Overdressed” I decided to start making my own clothes. Awesome sauce! The only problem is that I have no clue what I am doing. Uh oh. I may have gotten in over my head… Its hard to choose just one technique that I want help in mastering as I need to learn all the basics! Setting sleeves and finishing curved necklines seem so confusing and difficult to me so I will say those are what I would like help in learning the most! Thanks for a great blog!

  556. Nikki H. March 17, 2014 at 11:44 am #

The section on front fly insertion sounds amazing. I have done it before, but I’d love to learn new strategies to master the technique. Thanks for hosting this awesome giveaway!

  557. Amy March 17, 2014 at 12:00 pm #

I woul dlike to master buttonholes – perfectly constructed, sized and spaced.

  558. steffaniarosa March 17, 2014 at 12:11 pm #

I would love to master zippers as well as improve my buttonholes. I’m stoked that this book is chock full of photos, that’s how I learn best.

  559. Amber March 17, 2014 at 12:32 pm #

Even though I’ve put in many zippers, I still am leery of them! I’d love to master installing zippers, especially the side seam of a dress. Thanks for this opportunity! That book looks great!

  560. Anastasia March 17, 2014 at 12:35 pm #

I would like to learn how to master buttonholes, liners, and sleeve and plackets,

  561. Emily March 17, 2014 at 1:21 pm #

What a great looking book and pattern. I am still a beginner and I would love to master putting in zips.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  562. Kate March 17, 2014 at 2:58 pm #

This book is well rounded, liners and sleeves are the things I need lots o help with. The pattern is beautiful! Thanks for posting the giveaway!

  563. Miranda Vorres March 17, 2014 at 3:34 pm #

Wow! How exciting 🙂 I have yet to master the shirt collar. Thank you for hosting the giveaway.

  564. Leeanne March 17, 2014 at 6:16 pm #

Fitting garments definitely and choosing styles that flatter my figure.

  565. Stacy March 17, 2014 at 8:22 pm #

I could use help with everything, but setting in sleeves would be the place I’d start.

  566. MrsRobinson March 17, 2014 at 10:25 pm #

I would like to learn how to sew pin tucks. There is a lovely pattern from Made by Rae that is all pin tucks down the front but I’m sure it’d be a disaster if I tried it. How do you fit something with pin tucks anyway? Is it all math? Someone should do a post on that (cough.)

  567. Gina March 17, 2014 at 10:49 pm #

I want to master the invisible zipper!! I hear it’s so easy, but I’ve been beyond intimidated to try… After that, maybe some zipper fly tutorials on pants. So confusing to me, I would appreciate a visual!!

  568. monica L. March 17, 2014 at 10:53 pm #

What I would really like to master right now is pants. Both the fit and especially putting in a fly!

  569. 99laken March 18, 2014 at 1:16 am #

    This book looks amazing!
I’d love to master knits, ereabout them, i love wearing them do woul… Sah comfy!

Thank you for the chance of winning this amazing book!

  571. Anne Pieroth March 18, 2014 at 5:44 am #

I’d loooove to improve my zipper techniques, it just never works out as perfect as I’d like it to be. It would also be my first sewing book in English and would help me with words I didn’t learn at school or university, areas sadly lacking in crafts-related topics.

  572. Becca Porter March 18, 2014 at 8:09 am #

    Hey there!

Like many others I’d really like to nail using zips – I’m always scared that I’m going to ruin a garment by messing them up! I’m definitely a visual learner so the style of this book looks great 🙂

  573. Suzanne Beaubien March 18, 2014 at 8:43 am #

I can always use help with my fly fronts..I’ve sewn them many times, but I always have to consult a book or tutorial to make sure I do it right (and not backwards!)

  574. Angela March 18, 2014 at 9:48 am #

I’m fairly knew to garment sewing so I want to master them all, lol. I definitely need to add both of these items to my collection.

  575. Violet March 18, 2014 at 10:04 am #

I’d like to master the making of a really good men’s shirt. 🙂

  576. symondezyn March 18, 2014 at 11:03 am #

Honestly, the more I sew the more I realize I how much I still have to learn!! There are a thousand things I would love to master but right now I’m struggling to get a perfect invisible zip so that’s what’s on the forefront of my mind 🙂 The book looks great, and I’d love a chance to check out the ever-popular Emery! 🙂

  577. Elena Knits March 18, 2014 at 11:46 am #

Thank you so much for this giveaway!

  578. Sarah S March 18, 2014 at 12:47 pm #

I’d love to master the techniques involved in shirtmaking such as collars, cuffs, plackets.

  579. Heather March 18, 2014 at 1:19 pm #

I would love to master zipper installation and button holes! I have an old Kenmore and haven’t been sewing for too long, so I know I have a lot to learn. Even if something I’ve sewn doesn’t turn out, though, I know I’ve learned something!

  580. Emma March 18, 2014 at 1:36 pm #

I would love to master buttonholes, but also learn any/all finishing techniques for seams. Looks like a great book!

  581. Sarah VDS March 18, 2014 at 3:45 pm #

Woah, such a cool give away! I would like to learn how to do bound buttonholes, they seem so tricky!

  582. Lila March 18, 2014 at 4:58 pm #

I could sooo use this book 🙂 What I struggle the most with is sleeves, they always look weird and don’t fit entirely right.

  583. prolificprojectstarter March 18, 2014 at 6:54 pm #

ohh, looks lovely. I’m scared of welt pockets at the moment. I’m putting off cutting into some wool to make a waistcoat requested by my husband because I stuffed up one of the welt pockets on the calico muslin and don’t want to do it on the real thing.

  584. Cathy March 18, 2014 at 9:13 pm #

    Zippers!!!!

  585. Jen March 19, 2014 at 2:57 am #

Hey ! So I would absolutely love this book, for one, I wouldn’t have to package up my sewing machine and wheel it to my sisters house half an hour walk away (which will be death in winter). And two, because I really want to learn how to do dress zips. Invisible zippers I am absolutely fine with, but for some reason dress zips just NEVER work and I need a good tutorial for those, this looks amazing.

  586. Linn March 19, 2014 at 4:42 am #

What a great book! I would love to learn how to hem polyester/other elastic fabrics on a sewing machine. If I manage that I can make a pretty skirt with a well-functioning underskirt. Thanks for keeping such a great blog btw, I love the clothes you make.

  587. Deborah March 19, 2014 at 8:25 am #

Looks like a great book – thanks for the chance to win a copy. I’d like to get more confident and master different zip applications.

  588. Ruth Wesolowski March 19, 2014 at 8:28 am #

I would love to get over my irrational fear of sewing a fly zipper. This book looks great!

  589. Miss Demeanour March 19, 2014 at 9:38 am #

Putting in a collar I always seem to screw it up :/

  590. Leslie March 19, 2014 at 11:34 am #

I would love this book but I would give it to one of the 4H members that I teach sewing to as the majority of this young seamstresses do not have anyone at home that can help them and this would be a great reference tool.

  591. anordinarymuggle (@justamuggle2) March 19, 2014 at 12:39 pm #

I have almost no experience in sewing and now I wish I was more knowledgeable. My mother is an excellent seamstress and now I’m hoping she will teach me enough so I can sew my own dresses. I love vintage dresses but true vintage is hard to find in my size and expensive and repros can be expensive as well. Also, it’s nice to wear whatever you want and not be dictated by what the stores bring in.

  592. Gigi Clark March 19, 2014 at 1:33 pm #

I would like to master grading my patterns up. Still struggling but it is a work in progress.

  593. Anna March 19, 2014 at 2:29 pm #

I would want to learn about sewing with knits – summer is coming and so is t-shirt season!

  594. Wencke March 19, 2014 at 2:35 pm #

I really need to learn how to make buttonholes!

  595. Christiane March 19, 2014 at 3:06 pm #

oh joy. well, i would like to master zippers (finally) and making pants/ altering patterns for different sizes (amongst so many other things ;D) xxfrom Germany

  596. Athina March 19, 2014 at 5:47 pm #

Hi Lauren! Aren’t you spoiling us with another great giveaway? Anyway, the techniques I would like to master are closures: zippers, buttonholes, button plackets e.t.c, plus finishing the inside of the garment in a pretty and comfortable way: seam bindings, french seams, facings, linings, hemming, waist stays, only a few to mention!

  597. Kate in Vermont March 19, 2014 at 6:10 pm #

Ooooo, I need to get better at everything, but I would say zips and really getting hems perfect, because I hate an uneven edge!

  600. Christina March 20, 2014 at 2:16 am #

Great giveaway! As many others, the zippers is new and scary territory for me so that would be great to learn!

  601. Jackie Brown (@jackielb79) March 20, 2014 at 3:20 am #

I really, really want to get my head around front fly zippers, because RTW pants never, EVER fit me and getting them me-made is one of my major milestones in learning to sew.

  602. Lisa in Sweden March 20, 2014 at 7:34 am #

I would like to learn how to master buttonholes and zippers. I am a beginner at sewing and my first garment I am working on is a skirt. I am dreading the zipper and really would like some help.
