Hey everyone! Remember Christine Haynes, maker of the Emery dress pattern? Well, Christine has recently released her second book, The Complete Photo Guide to Clothing Construction, and I’m excited to be the next stop on the blog tour!
When Christine originally asked me if I wanted to preview the book and take part in the tour, I didn’t even finish reading her email before I started typing my ‘YES YES YESSSSS’ response right back to her (good thing I did finish reading before I actually sent it, though- because at first, I thought she was saying she was planning a physical book tour and would end up in Nashville! Doh! Christine, you should still come to Nashville, tho :)). I really love sewing books, almost to a fault – I have a few dozen on my bookshelf, and only that few because I tend to cull them pretty aggressively so they don’t end up taking over my sewing room. Even though I’m not a beginner, I especially love the books geared toward beginners – I love all the photos and how-tos, and I still find myself learning new things from time to time!
The Complete Photo Guide to Clothing Construction is a book that is definitely geared toward beginners – if you need hand holding, this is the book for you. I’m actually pretty amazed at all the information Christine managed to cram in this deceptively small looking book – from choosing the correct thread and needle, to pretreating fabric, to deciphering the envelope of a sewing pattern, to those amazing step-by-step photo guides for a whole array of techniques. The general consensus on this book seems to be that everyone wishes they had it when they started sewing – and I absolutely agree! Just the zipper section alone would have sent angels singing to my sewing room if I’d had this shit back when I was first trying to understand how to operate my sewing machine. I think the best way to learn it hands-on with a good tutor, but that’s not always an option for everyone. Having this book would be the next best thing – it’s like having a tutor in your sewing room 24/7, but in print! Ha!
I think this was the tutorial that excited me the most about this book. Yes, it’s geared toward beginners, but then she throws things like this in the mix. A full color, photo tutorial on sewing a front fly zipper! And it’s a good one, too! See – a beginner could TOTALLY tackle this technique with Christine by their side.

I also love this how-to on shortening a zipper- isn’t it sooo much more clear than the sad little insert that comes with your Coats and Clark zip? Especially since, yes, you can totally shorten a zip by machine. I think I did mine by hand for the first, oh, 7 years of my sewing career – and trying to find a needle with matching thread in the heat of the moment? Forget about it! Half my stuff from back then has self-made zipper stops in some obnoxious mismatched shade of whatever I happened to find in the nearest pincushion. Again, I would have LOVED to have this book at my side when trying to figure this stuff out.
This is probably my favorite part of the book – scattered throughout are photos of garments with numbers denoting what technique was used for each part, and where to find it in the book. Isn’t that genius? Plus, all the patterns Christine used (both finished garments and for the photo tutorials) are from indie designers. No Big 4 to be found anywhere in this bad boy, yeeeah!

I wish I had something like this back in the day when I didn’t know squat about sewing techniques and eyeballed everything. It’s great to see books like this popping up and helping the beginners and even more experienced sewers. I have a book for home decor sewing and I plan to make little test swatches of everything that’s there. Just for the practice.
Recently I’ve been thinking that my collars could be better. I definitely want to be the master of collars(or master of the universe. Whichever comes first) 🙂

This is really cool! I’ve only sewn small projects like pillow cases and bean bags before, so I guess the technique I’d like to master is really just learning how to construct a garment in general! Your blog is really inspirational and I want to try my hand at making clothes myself. 🙂

Where to start? Improving the fitting , I guess
I’m just starting to learn to sew, so I don’t know enough to know which techniques I will want to master. I guess zippers are a good start, but I also have dreams of making my own pants/shorts, so… whatever techniques I need for that?
My sleeve technique could probably be improved. Even when they go in with no tucks, I feel like there’s something that just isn’t right.

Holy Kay-rap! I have sewing books from the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 90’s, but nothing from the 21st century. Makes sense that I should have something that demonstrates the use of MODERN notions and equipment.
P.S. Fly fronts are so easy. My favorite way to make trousers is a hidden button fly front. Try it!
Ooooh. I’d have to say 1st would be welt pockets. I have like next to no fear in the sewing room but have been avoided welts. 2nd would be perfecting my blind hems by machine. I do alright, and they are functional but not perfect.

Hmm. Where to start.. Fly insert! I made my hubs some bubbled-crotched jeans that are now only for yardwork. Pretty funny to see a man looking down confusedly at his zipper, tho.

I have yet to make a pretty looking front fly. Other zipper techniques don’t phase me, but my front fly usually looks like it came from a home ec class. If I could master that, I would be very happy.

This is so fun! I’m sadly lacking in my ability to match waist seams on invisible zippers. I’m pretty good all around the rest of the garment. Then I put in this zipper and YIKES. 1/2″ difference!
Fitting! I am 5′, short-waisted, slopey shouldered with a rack which makes it very hard to fit!
Id like to work on sleeve techniques, and rolled hems on my sewing machine. Neat book!

Zippers! I always get this wonky little ‘bump’ at the bottom. Also hand-finishing things inside the garment and on hems.

Christina is so clever! This is a great looking book. Even though I wouldn’t say I’m a beginner I am self taught so some ‘beginner’ techniques are not so polished. I completely avoid buttonholes because I have NO IDEA how I’d make one on my unsophisticated machine.

How amazing! This looks like the Holy Grail of sewing books. Either bound button holes or fitting a liniing without it poking out at all the wrong places (are there any right places…) for me.

This is the coolest book ever! I am a beginner, trying to teach myself how to sew, so every help with any technique is greatly appreciated. If I have to name one, I’ll go with darts: they are still a mystery to me!

A few things, but maybe start off with neatly lining skirts and dresses, matching printed fabric for dresses, and fabric draping – all in time for summer!! (lol)

Invisible zips and sleeves (there are only so many kimono sleeves patterns out there) oh and button holes.

I just did finally read a book for zipper help rather than trying to decipher the zipper package and it was amazing how much better it was (doh fo’ sho’) I’d had the book for ages….anyway – this book looks fabulous, as does the Emery and I’d love to win it.

Even though I have about 40 years of sewing experience, I am still learning, which is one of the most exciting things about sewing. Even better, I am teaching my daughter to sew and would love to share this book with her. This year’s big sewing challenge – sewing my daughter’s wedding dress – yikes!!!!!

This is amazing!!! Zippers, generally, are definitely something I’d like to get better at- even though I’ve been making clothes for myself for 10+ years, zipper insertion fills me with such anxiety that I either sub buttons or attach it by hand, which isn’t terrible but really leaves me at a disadvantage, pant-sewing wise.

Right now I’d love to master using a rotary cutter without catching it on a pin, table edge etc and trashing the blade. Clumsiness is getting expensive!

So many! Sewing with different fabrics, what those different fabrics are/mean, underlining, lining, piping, lapped zip, different pocket types, piping, bias binding, the list goes on!
I learned to sew in jr. high school home ec, and from my mom…. back in the 70’s. I sewed then because it was cheaper than buying clothes. Nowadays, that can’t be the motivation to sew. Your blog was the first sewing blog I’ve stumbled into, and it has inspired me to begin to sew with the purpose of well made clothes, and I would like to contribute to my daughters’ wardrobe with well made classic pieces. I am sure this book would be an excellent refresher for many areas that I have allowed to grow lax or never learned properly.

I’d like to master other kinds of zips apart from invisible ones. I’m really good at those, but I suck at pretty much the rest of them – and it’s devastating to do a great job on an entire project, only to scream at the eleventh hour with a wonky zip insertion. (My sewing machine has learned a lot of Very Bad Words, at least 50% due to zips.)

Having been restricted to Hand sewing & knitting since leaving Home Ec classes years ago I’m in need of mastering all machine sewing techniques but one of the first I’ll be trying to master will probably be darts. As a self taught sewer – I’m constantly learning – there is so much i don’t know until i stumble on it! I’d like to learn about piping and binding – i love the idea of giving a contrast edge to garments – to make it look more professional!
I would love to (re-)master everything. Just getting back to sewing after working too many hours! BTW-love the Singer sewing series! I aspire to sew that accurately & neatly.

I want to learn tailoring.
O-o-o-h, pictures. As a beginner who’s a visual learner, this book sounds like a cure for hours of frustration and seam ripping. Knits, zippers, collars, packets, I tackle all with trepidation and held breath, hoping for the best and falling far short of the mark.
Like many others I’m so new I have loads of things to learn. I’m currently most intimidated by setting in sleeves, button holes, & zippers.
I’d like to master the bias binding finish! Even if I use a ready made binding you can guarantee I’ll have screwed up either the stitching, or the amount to turn over somewhere (usually several places!) And if i try and make my own…well let’s just not got there!
I would love to be able to sew better with chiffon – stop changing shape!! x
I really need to master the technique of finishing off the waistband at the top of the zip without it being wonky or not getting the hook and bar correct as have too much or too little material overlapping.

This book looks really user-friendly, and so, I’m sure, super helpful for a beginner sewist like me. I would love my garments to have clean finishing right off the bat, so any tips on different seaming and when to do what would be wonderful!

I really want to learn to insert zips properly, I just can’t seem to get the hang of it.
I would love to master “actually following the instructions”. This book looks to me to be a great way to actually getting to know how to construct my own clothes properly and with pictures! Not the wonky diagrams you get almost every pattern but actual photo’s ! Just mastering to finish reading and thén start working on it would be brilliant.*
*And if that doesn’t qualify: I would like to master how adjust patterns and find out how to get things to fit. And a way of hemming things that is hopefully hassle-free and fairly quick (since it took me 12 hours on my last dress…)

I’ve never had basic sewing lessons, so I think I could really benefit from this book. I tend to get stuck with the instructions that come with the patterns and then I just sorta make stuff up to get it done…so, I think this book could help me out. I still need to master measurements. I always mess up and something gets a little wonky, or I haven’t quite measured the fit right and then i’m not really sure how to fix it. I do also need to improve on my more basic techniques.
Oh gosh… Everything! But a priority list would include invisible zips (my last attempt ended up as a ‘fully on show’ zip), what I’m meant to do with fitting to account for my really small back versus ample bust, and to sew a pair of trousers (pants) as I have never tried and the thought induces pure terror!

I would like to learn how to sew pin tucks. There is a lovely pattern from Made by Rae that is all pin tucks down the front but I’m sure it’d be a disaster if I tried it. How do you fit something with pin tucks anyway? Is it all math? Someone should do a post on that (cough.)

Hey ! So I would absolutely love this book, for one, I wouldn’t have to package up my sewing machine and wheel it to my sisters house half an hour walk away (which will be death in winter). And two, because I really want to learn how to do dress zips. Invisible zippers I am absolutely fine with, but for some reason dress zips just NEVER work and I need a good tutorial for those, this looks amazing.

Putting in a collar I always seem to screw it up
I would love this book but I would give it to one of the 4H members that I teach sewing to as the majority of this young seamstresses do not have anyone at home that can help them and this would be a great reference tool.
I have almost no experience in sewing and now I wish I was more knowledgeable. My mother is an excellent seamstress and now I’m hoping she will teach me enough so I can sew my own dresses. I love vintage dresses but true vintage is hard to find in my size and expensive and repros can be expensive as well. Also, it’s nice to wear whatever you want and not be dictated by what the stores bring in.
I would like to master grading my patterns up. Still struggling but it is a work in progress.

Anyway, the techniques I would like to master are closures: zippers, buttonholes, button plackets e.t.c, plus finishing the inside of the garment in a pretty and comfortable way: seam bindings, french seams, facings, linings, hemming, waist stays, only a few to mention!
Ooooo, I need to get better at everything, but I would say zips and really getting hems perfect, because I hate an uneven edge!
